Teachers' Views of Human Rights Education

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) states that education should be "directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms... promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups." This study surveyed 53 teachers on their views of Human Rights Education, including their familiarity with the concept, their self-efficacy with teaching it, and conditions that would increase the likelihood of their teaching it. The study found that, regardless of familiarity with the topic, years of teaching experience, or school location (urban/suburban), most teachers were open to teaching Human Rights Education. They did identify the need for better resources in the form of lesson plans, teaching materials, and professional training. In addition, support from other teachers, administration, and parents was felt to be important in order for them to undertake Human Rights Education. The best strategy to move forward with Human Rights Education would be to provide resources and support for teachers so that we can be living up to the expectations put forth in the UDHR.

Health education intervention to reduce risk of infectious disease transmission among community health workers and their clients

Indigent and congregate-living populations have high susceptibilities for disease and pose a higher risk for disease transmission to family, friends and to persons providing services to these populations. The adoption of basic infection control, personal hygiene, safe food handling and simple engineering practices will reduce the risk of infectious disease transmission to, from and among indigent and congregate-living populations. ^ The provision of social services, health promotion activities and other support services to indigent and congregate-living populations is an important aspect of many public health-related governmental, community-based and other medical care provider agencies. ^ In the interest of protecting the health of indigent and congregate-living populations, of personnel from organizations providing services to these populations and of the general community, an educational intervention is warranted to prevent the spread of blood-borne, air-borne, food-borne and close contact-borne infectious diseases. ^ An educational presentation was provided to staff from a community-based organization specializing in providing housing, health education, foodstuffs and meals and support services to disabled, low-income, homeless and HIV-infected individuals. The educational presentation delivered general best practices and standard guidelines. A pre and post test were administered to determine and measure knowledge pertinent to controlling the spread of infectious diseases between and among homeless shelter-living clients and between clients and the organization's staff. ^ Comparing pre-test and post-test results revealed areas of knowledge currently held by staff and other areas that staff would benefit from additional educational seminars and training. ^

Symposium for dental treatment of medically complex children: Practice based culminating experience a continuing education course

The purpose of this Continuing Education Course is to provide oral health professionals with information to address the unique dental needs of medically complex children. The objective is to train dentists to treat special needs patients so these children have more access to oral healthcare. ^ Under the auspice of Dell Children Hospital of Austin, Lisa Jacob DDS MS is administering this Continuing Education Course for dentists and dental staff from the 46 counties of central Texas served by the hospital.^ Needs assessment was determined through a survey questionnaire to collect data about the number of special needs patients seen by general dentists in Central Texas.^ In recent years, an increasing number of continuing education courses have been developed to help dentists learn techniques for providing dentistry in more understanding ways to patients with special needs. Dentists and dental staff are trained to provide care specifically in dentistry, regardless of who the patient is. This means dentists can perform a clinical examination, carry out procedures to diagnose and treat oral diseases, and provide restorations such as fillings and crowns. ^ Four prominent speakers will provide an instructional tool to address the need for dentists to increase their competence and comfort level in caring for individuals with developmental disabilities. Each speaker will address one of the most frequently encountered cases of medically complex children. The four topics selected by Dr. Lisa Jacob are Cancer, Mental Disability, Downs Syndrome, and Craniofacial Syndromes.^ The public health implications of this continuing education course are presented in providing dental service to this underserved population. When general dentist turn away patients with special needs because of lack of knowledge to treat them, these patients will, more than likely, postpone or abandon needed dental visits because of difficulties reaching pediatric dentists who may not be available in certain areas.^

AN ANALYSIS OF THE GENERAL WELL-BEING OF BLACKS AND WHITES

The importance of race as a factor in mental health status has been a topic of controversy. This study reviews the history of research in this area and examines racial variances in the relationship between selected socio-demographic variables and general well-being. The study also examines the appropriateness of an additive versus an interactive statistical model for this investigation.^ The sample consists of 6,913 persons who completed the General Well-Being Schedules as administered in the detailed component of the first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I) conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics between April, 1971 and October, 1975. The sampling design is a multistage, probability sample of clusters of persons in area based segments. Of the 6,913 persons, 873 are Black.^ Unlike other recent community based mental health studies, this study revealed significant differences between the general well-being of Blacks and Whites. Blacks continued to exhibit significantly lower levels of well-being even after adjustments were made for income, education, marital status, sex, age and place of residence. Statistical interaction was found between race and sex with Black females reporting lower levels of well-being than either Black or White males or their White female counterparts.^ The study includes a detailed review of the NHANES I sample design. It is shown that selected aspects of the design make it difficult to render appropriate national comparisons of Black-White differences. As a result conclusions pertaining to these differences based on NHANES I may be of questionable validity. ^

A practice-based culminating experience: Writing a HRSA grant application with Texas Organ Sharing Alliance for public education efforts to increase solid organ donation

In November 2010, nearly 110,000 people in the United States were waiting for organs for transplantation. Despite the fact that the organ donor registration rate has doubled in the last year, Texas has the lowest registration rate in the nation. Due to the need for improved registration rates in Texas, this practice-based culminating experience was to write an application for federal funding for the central Texas organ procurement organization, Texas Organ Sharing Alliance. The culminating experience has two levels of significance for public health – (1) to engage in an activity to promote organ donation registration, and (2) to provide professional experience in grant writing. ^ The process began with a literature review. The review was to identify successful intervention activities in motivating organ donation registration that could be used in intervention design for the grant application. Conclusions derived from the literature review included (1) the need to specifically encourage family discussions, (2) religious and community leaders can be leveraged to facilitate organ donation conversations in families, (3) communication content must be culturally sensitive and (4) ethnic disparities in transplantation must be acknowledged and discussed.^ Post the literature review; the experience followed a five step process of developing the grant application. The steps included securing permission to proceed, assembling a project team, creation of a project plan and timeline, writing each element of the grant application including the design of proposed intervention activities, and completion of the federal grant application. ^ After the grant application was written, an evaluation of the grant writing process was conducted. Opportunities for improvement were identified. The first opportunity was the need for better timeline management to allow for review of the application by an independent party, iterative development of the budget proposal, and development of collaborative partnerships. Another improvement opportunity was the management of conflict regarding the design of the intervention that stemmed from marketing versus evidence-based approaches. La presencia de Darwin en William Henry Hudson

W. H. Hudson tuvo un contacto muy temprano con El origen de las especies; probablemente haya leído el libro el mismo año de su aparición (1859). Esta lectura lo acercó a una filosofía naturalista que, a la vez, lo alejó de la formación materna en cuestión religiosa, y lo condujo a asumir una posición evolucionista crítica. De hecho, contradijo observaciones de Darwin que éste revisó, además de mencionarlo en la segunda edición de El origen de las especies (1888). Asimismo, son numerosas las citas que Hudson hace de Darwin en sus textos. Aunque pueden marcarse diferencias, ciertos tópicos generales del evolucionismo, son fácilmente reconocibles a lo largo de su producción. El trabajo pretende avanzar sobre estos aspectos para identificar cuán profundamente caló en su concepción del mundo la perspectiva evolucionista.

Panorama general 1970 al 2005 de la matrícula y el egreso universitarios en México como indicadores de la tensión en el mercado laboral

En este trabajo se presentan algunos avances de un proyecto sobre empleo profesional de egresados de universidades públicas y privadas en México. Concretamente se describen los resultados de la fase de indagación cuantitativa de las características de la matrícula y el egreso de nivel universitario por área de estudio, carrera y régimen, de 1970 al 2005, para la población total a nivel nacional, así como algunas características de la participación laboral de nivel profesional. El trabajo se centra en la población de instituciones públicas y privadas por la presencia creciente de estas últimas en la atención de la demanda y para comprender un mercado laboral que parece cada vez más competido y diferenciado por origen institucional. Partimos del supuesto de que la exploración cuantitativa de la dinámica de la educación superior en México en los últimos 35 años, ofrece elementos para conocer algunas de las características de los mercados laborales de nivel profesional y sus niveles de tensión por saturación. En este sentido, la indagación cuantitativa del estudio es una dimensión, entre otras, que contribuye en cierta medida a la comprensión del papel de la educación en el mercado laboral y, en general, de la función social de la educación, dos de los objetivos más amplios del proyecto en el que se enmarca lo que aquí se expone

La Geografía en la extensión universitaria : Talleres sobre microemprendimientos productivos en áreas rurales y urbanas del municipio de General Pueyrredón

El objetivo del trabajo es difundir actividades de extensión desarrolladas por alumnos y docentes, con la finalidad de mejorar la calidad de vida de la población del área de estudio, brindar la posibilidad de insertarse al mercado laboral y vincular a integrantes del grupo con diferentes actores sociales en espacios propuestos. Diversos diagnósticos detectaron necesidades sociolaborales en barrios de Mar del Plata. Para mitigarlas, integrantes del Voluntariado Universitario diseñan materiales para dictar talleres sobre Microemprendimientos Productivos. La experiencia tiene resultados positivos porque los encuentros son espacios de debate sobre experiencias locales, que incentivan la asociatividad y generan redes sociales.
