'Operation motorway': landscapes of construction on England's M1 motorway

Recent years have seen an increasing number of academics attempt to write more process-oriented and 'nonrepresentational' accounts of landscape. Drawing upon this literature, I discuss a number of the movements, materialities, and practices entailed in constructing England's M1 motorway in the late 1950s. The performances, movements and durability of a diverse range of things-including earth-moving machines, public relations brochures, maps, helicopters, senior engineers, aggregate and labourers-are shown to be important to the construction and ordering of the motorway and spaces of the construction company in different times and spaces, with people's experiences or understandings of construction, both now and in the past, emerging through memories, talk and embodied encounters with architectures, texts and artefacts which are assembled, circulated and/or archived. Aerial perspectives assumed a prominent role in depictions of construction, while journalists and engineers frequently drew upon a military vocabulary and alluded to the military nature of the project when discussing the motorway. Anxiety-induced response perseverance and stereotyping change

This study examined anxiety as a potential moderator of stereotype change. Previous work has independently demonstrated an increase in stereotyping under conditions of high anxiety as well as following attempts to suppress stereotypic thought. The combination of these two antecedent conditions might thus be expected to produce an additive increase in stereotyping. In contrast to an additive pattern, however, we observed an interaction between anxiety and suppression task instruction. Whilst both the instruction to suppress (in the absence of anxiety) or anxiety (in the absence of the instruction to suppress) did independently increase stereotyping, when the two co-occurred, there was no change. We explain this interaction by considering work from neuropsychological domain on response perseverance: cognitive overload (one consequence of anxiety) may inhibit the ability to switch between modes of perception. These findings suggest a potentially important moderator for attempts to suppress social stereotypes, and point to the efficacy of integrating work from diverse domains for understanding the operation of executive processes in person perception.

Forces information and media services in Operation Granby 1990-91

The paper looks at the setting up of media services for British Army forces engaged in Operation Granby, the British participation in Operation Desert Storm, the liberation of Kuwait from Iraqi occupation in 1991. In particular, the piece focuses on the creation of a force newspaper and radio station.There is far more involved in the organisation of modern war than simply battles themselves One aspect is the importance of creating and maintaining morale, which can be achieved in a number of ways, especially by keeping troops informed of their progress, purpose and mission as operations unfold. This was specifically recognised by commanders in the Gulf War, who ensured the smooth transmission of information by the provision of media services for forces personnel throughout the War. Here S J Anglim concentrates on the difficulties inherent in setting up and running the Gulf Forces newspaper, The Sandy Times, a Radio service and producing video reviews, all of which played their part in ensunng high morale. He concludes that there are lessons to be learnt and implemented for the success of any future conflicts.
