We demonstrate a coexistence of coherent and incoherent modes in the optical comb generated by a passively mode-locked quantum dot laser. This is experimentally achieved by means of optical linewidth, radio frequency spectrum, and optical spectrum measurements and confirmed numerically by a delay-differential equation model showing excellent agreement with the experiment. We interpret the state as a chimera state. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Infantile Nystagmus Syndrome, or Congenital Nystagmus, is an ocular-motor disorder characterized by involuntary, conjugated and bilateral to and fro ocular oscillations. Good visual acuity in congenital nystagmus can be achieved during the foveation periods in which eye velocity slows down while the target image crosses the fovea. Visual acuity was found to be mainly dependent on the duration of the foveation periods. In this work a new approach is proposed for estimation of foveation parameters: a cubic spline interpolation of the nystagmus recording before localizing the start point of foveation window and to estimate its duration. The performances of the proposed algorithm were assessed in comparison with a previously developed algorithm, used here as gold standard. The obtained results suggest that the spline interpolation could be a useful tool to filter the eye movement recordings before applying an algorithm to estimate the foveation window parameters. © 2013 IEEE.

In the proof of Lemma 3.1 in [1] we need to show that we may take the two points p and q with p ≠ q such that p+q+(b-2)g21(C′)∼2(q1+… +qb-1) where q1,…,qb-1 are points of C′, but in the paper [1] we did not show that p ≠ q. Moreover, we hadn't been able to prove this using the method of our paper [1]. So we must add some more assumption to Lemma 3.1 and rewrite the statements of our paper after Lemma 3.1. The following is the correct version of Lemma 3.1 in [1] with its proof.

A real-time 5×21.6 Gbit/s WDM electro-optical transceiver is presented. Optical carriers were spaced by 20 GHz and each one transmitted four orthogonally overlapping broadband subcarriers. Only analogue electronics were employed, achieving an unprecedented spectral efficiency in DSP-less SCM links.

Prices of U.S. Treasury securities vary over time and across maturities. When the market in Treasurys is sufficiently complete and frictionless, these prices may be modeled by a function time and maturity. A cross-section of this function for time held fixed is called the yield curve; the aggregate of these sections is the evolution of the yield curve. This dissertation studies aspects of this evolution. ^ There are two complementary approaches to the study of yield curve evolution here. The first is principal components analysis; the second is wavelet analysis. In both approaches both the time and maturity variables are discretized. In principal components analysis the vectors of yield curve shifts are viewed as observations of a multivariate normal distribution. The resulting covariance matrix is diagonalized; the resulting eigenvalues and eigenvectors (the principal components) are used to draw inferences about the yield curve evolution. ^ In wavelet analysis, the vectors of shifts are resolved into hierarchies of localized fundamental shifts (wavelets) that leave specified global properties invariant (average change and duration change). The hierarchies relate to the degree of localization with movements restricted to a single maturity at the base and general movements at the apex. Second generation wavelet techniques allow better adaptation of the model to economic observables. Statistically, the wavelet approach is inherently nonparametric while the wavelets themselves are better adapted to describing a complete market. ^ Principal components analysis provides information on the dimension of the yield curve process. While there is no clear demarkation between operative factors and noise, the top six principal components pick up 99% of total interest rate variation 95% of the time. An economically justified basis of this process is hard to find; for example a simple linear model will not suffice for the first principal component and the shape of this component is nonstationary. ^ Wavelet analysis works more directly with yield curve observations than principal components analysis. In fact the complete process from bond data to multiresolution is presented, including the dedicated Perl programs and the details of the portfolio metrics and specially adapted wavelet construction. The result is more robust statistics which provide balance to the more fragile principal components analysis. ^

The three-dimensional reconstructions of Phoebichnus trochoides and Schaubcylindrichnus (Palaeophycus) heberti created as part of this thesis allow us to fully understand and characterize the three-dimensional morphology and palaeobiology of these common taxa. Three-dimensional reconstructions demonstrate that P. trochoides is a large stellate burrow composed of numerous long galleries produced by a deposit feeding organism. This study reports for the first time that the central zone is composed of stacked disk-shaped layers of highly bioturbated sediment, the radial burrows are composed of a sand-rich lining of pelleted annuli surrounding an active sand-rich fill, and the presence of subtle conical features above the radial galleries that are inferred to result from collapse cone feeding. Reconstructions of heberti demonstrate that the thick walled burrows are composed of sand-rich annular rings, are a broad U-shape, and may be either clustered or isolated. Our observations show that the morphology of heberti is inconsistent with the generic diagnosis of Palaeophycus, but is morphologically comparable to Schaubcylindrichnus, and is herein synonymised with Schaubcylindrichnus to create S. heberti comb. nov. The three-dimensional reconstructions have revealed a number of hitherto unknown morphological elements to both taxa which has facilitated new interpretations of the trace-makers behaviour. The data improves the taxonomic understanding of both P. trochoides and S. heberti which require significant taxonomic change and emendation of diagnoses at the species and genus level.
