Hydrolysis of beta-lactam antibiotics by beta-lactamases (e. g., metallo-beta-lactamase, m beta l) is one of the major bacterial defense systems. These enzymes can catalyze the hydrolysis of a variety of antibiotics including the latest generation of cephalosporins, cephamycins and imipenem. It is shown in this paper that the thiol/thione moieties eliminated from certain cephalosporins by m beta l-mediated hydrolysis readily react with molecular iodine to produce ionic compounds having S-I bonds. While the reaction of MTT with iodine produced the corresponding disulfide, MDT and DMETT produced the charge-transfer complexes MDT-I-2 and DMETT-I-2, respectively. Addition of two equivalents of I-2 to MDT produced a novel cationic complex having an almost linear S-I+-S moiety and I-5(-) counter anion. However, this reaction appears to be highly solvent dependent. When the reaction of MDT with I2 was carried out in water, the reaction produced a monocation having I-5(-), indicating the reactivity of MDT toward I2 is very similar to that of the most commonly used antithyroid drug methimazole (MMI). In contrast to MMI, MDT and DMETT, the triazine-based compound MTDT acts as a weak donor toward iodine. (C)2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Electronic transport in the high temperature paramagnetic regime of the colossal magnetoresistive oxides, La(1-x)A(x)MnO(3), A=Ca, Sr, Ba, x similar or equal to 0.1-0.3, has been investigated using resistivity measurements. The main motivation for this work is to relook into the actual magnitude of the activation energy for transport in a number of manganites and study its variation as a function of hole doping (x), average A-site cation radius (< r(A)>), cationic disorder (sigma(2)) and strain (epsilon(zz)). We show that contrary to current practice, the description of a single activation energy in this phase is not entirely accurate. Our results clearly reveal a strong dependence of the activation energy on the hole doping as well as disorder. Comparing the results across different substituent species with different < r(A)> reveals the importance of sigma(2) as a metric to qualify any analysis based on (r(A)). (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Proton transfer across cationic hydrogen bonds involving Schiff base, ammonia and related compounds has been studied at the 4-31G level. Proton transfer characteristics are correlated to the proton affinities of the species involved. Hydrogen bond strengths of these hydrogen bonds are correlated to the differences in the proton affinity of the donor and the acceptor. Influence of a neighbouring hydrogen bond on the proton transfer from Schiff base to ammonia and Schiff base to water is also discussed.

The temperature dependence of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and a closed-loop coexistence curve are obtained, via Monte Carlo simulations, in the water surfactant limit of a two-dimensional version of a statistical mechanical model for micro-emulsions, The CMC and the coexistence curve reproduce various experimental trends as functions of the couplings. In the oil-surfactant limit, there is a conventional coexistence cure with an upper consolute point that allows for a region of three-phase coexistence between oil-rich, water-rich and microemulsion phases.

Sensing and photocatalysis of textile industry effluents such as dyes using mesoporous anatase titania nanowires are discussed here.Spectroscopic investigations show that the titania nanowires preferentially sense cationic (e.g. Methylene Blue, Rhodamine B) over anionic (e.g. Orange G, Remazol Brilliant Blue R) dyes. The adsorbed dye concentration on titania nanowires increased with increase in nanowire dimensions and dye solution pH. Electrochemical sensing directly corroborated spectroscopic findings. Electrochemical detection sensitivity for Methylene Blue increased by more than two times in magnitude with tripling of nanowire average length. Photodegradation of Methylene Blue using titania nanowires is also more efficient than the commercial P25-TiO2 nanopowders. Keeping illumination protocol and observation times constant, the Methylene Blue concentration in solution decreased by only 50% in case of P25-TiO2 nanoparticles compared to a 100% decrease for titania nanowires. Photodegradation was also found to be function of exposure times and dye solution pH.Excellent sensing ability and photocatalytic activity of the titania nanowires is attributed to increased effective reaction area of the controlled nanostructured morphology. The existingm odels of drop breakage in stirred dispersions grossly overpredict the maximum drop size when surface active agents are present inspite of using the lowered value of interfacial tension. It is shown that the difference in the values of dynamic and static interfacial tension, aids the turbulent stresses in drop breakage. When the difference is zero, e.g. for pure liquids and for high concentration of surfactants, the influence of the addition of surfactant is merely to reduce the interfacial tension and can be accounted for by existingm odels. A modified model has been developed, where the drop breakage is assumed to be represented by a Voigt element. The deforming stresses are due to turbulence and the difference between dynamic and static interfacial tensions. The resisting stresses arise due to interfacial tension and the viscous flow inside the drop. The model yields the existing expressions for dmax as special cases. The model has been found to be satisfactory when tested against experimental results using the styrene-water-teepol system.

Molybdenum-doped TiO2 organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions by in situ surface modification using n-butylamine. This was carried out at 150 degrees C at autogeneous pressure over 18 h. n-Butylamine was selected as a surfactant since it produced nanoparticles of the desired size and shape. The products were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, dynamic light-scattering spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Chemical oxygen demand was estimated in order to determine the photodegradation efficiency of the molybdenum-doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles in the treatment of pharmaceutical effluents. It was found that molybdenum-doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles showed higher photocatalytic efficiency than untreated TiO2 nanoparticles.

The reaction of cadmium sulfate in the presence of polyazaheterocyclic organic molecules gave rise to a variety of new cadmium sulfate phases in water containing solvothermal reaction. The compounds have two- (I) and three-dimensionally (II-VI) extended structures. All the compounds have structures built up by the connectivity involving the cadmium octahedra and the sulfate tetrahedra in which the heterocyclic organic molecules act as the ligand. The linkages between the Cd2+ and (SO4)2- ions form one- (II), two- (I, III, and IV), and three- (V and VI) dimensionally extended cadmium sulfate phases. The connectivity between Cd2+ ion and the heterocyclic ligand also gives rise to one- and two-dimensional structures. The inter-connectivity between the two units gives rise to the observed structures. The presence of Cd-O-Cd chains and Cd-O-Cd layers in some of the structures is noteworthy. The adsorption/desorption studies suggest that the cadmium sulfate phases adsorb/desorb anionic dyes selectively in the presence of water/ethanol, respectively. The photocatalytic degradation studies on cationic dyes under UV-irradiation indicate modest activity. The cyanosilylation of imines using the present compounds as heterogeneous catalyst indicate good catalytic behavior. The various properties exhibited by the cadmium sulfate phases suggest that these compounds are versatile. All the compounds were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, infrared (IR) and UV-visible studies.

Well uniform microspheres of phase pure Covellite were synthesized through a simple hydrothermal approach using poly vinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as surfactant. The micro-spheres were constituted of numerous self-organized knitted nano-ribbons of similar to 30 nm thickness. The effect of conc. PVP in the hydrothermal precursor solution on the product morphology was investigated. Based on the out-coming product micro-architecture a growth mechanism was proposed which emphasized bubbled nucleation inside the hydrothermal reactor. In a comparative study on linear optical properties, enhancement of luminescent intensity was observed for nano-ribbon clung microspheres rather than that of agglomerates of distorted particles, which may be attributed to better crystallinity as well as reduced surface defects and ionic vacancies for ribbon-like nano-structures.

Several amphipathic and cationic substances are known to bind lipid A, the toxic component of bacterial lipopolysaccharides. In this report, we have characterized, by fluorescence methods, the interaction of melittin, an amphipathic and basic 26-residue polypeptide isolated from bee venom, with lipid A. The stoichiometry of the complex appears to be two molecules of melittin to one of lipid A with a dissociation constant of 2.5 × 10 −6 M. The binding of melittin not only modifies the endotoxic properties of lipid A in a number of biological assays, but also results in abrogation of the hemolytic activity of melittin. A model of the complex is proposed based on the known structures of lipid A and melittin, and the observed stoichiometry of binding.

Aluminium-silicon alloy, an important material used for the construction of internal combustion engines, exhibit pressure induced distinct regimes of wear and friction; ultra-mild and mild. In this work the alloy is slid lubricated against a spherical steel pin at contact pressures characteristic of the two test regimes, at a very low sliding velocity. In both cases, the friction is controlled at the initial stages of sliding by the abrasion of the steel pin by the protruding silicon particles of the disc. The generation of nascent steel chips helps to breakdown the additive in the oil by a cationic exchange that yields chemical products of benefits to the tribology. The friction is initially controlled by abrasion, but the chemical products gain increasing importance in controlling friction with sliding time. After long times, depending on contact pressure, the chemical products determine sliding friction exclusively. In this paper, a host of mechanical and spectroscopic techniques are used to identify and characterize mechanical damage and chemical changes. Although the basic dissipation mechanisms are the same in the two regimes, the matrix remains practically unworn in the low-pressure ultra-mild wear regime. In the higher pressure regime at long sliding times a small but finite wear rate prevails. Incipient plasticity in the subsurface controls the mechanism of wear.

Following an earlier study (J. Am. Chem Soc. 2007, 129, 4470) describing a very unusual growth kinetics of ZnO nanoparticles, we critically evaluate here the proposed mechanism involving a crucial role of the alkali base ion in controlling the growth of ZnO nanoparticles using other alkali bases, namely, LiOH and KOH. While confirming the earlier conclusion of the growth of ZnO nanoparticles being hindered by an effective passivating layer of cations present in the reaction mixture and thereby generalizing this phenomenon, present experimental data reveal an intriguing nonmonotonic dependence of the passivation efficacy on the ionic size of the alkali base ion. This unexpected behavior is rationalized on the basis of two opposing factors: (a) solvated cationic radii and (b) dissociation constant of the base.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a slowly progressive disease characterized by airway inflammation and largely irreversible airflow limitation. One major risk factor for COPD is cigarette smoking. Since the inflammatory process starts many years prior to the onset of clinical symptoms and still continues after smoking cessation, there is an urgent need to find simple non-invasive biomarkers that can be used in the early diagnosis of COPD and which could help in predicting the disease progression. The first aim of the present study was to evaluate the involvement of different oxidative/nitrosative stress markers, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitor-1 (TIMP-1) in smokers and in COPD. Elevated numbers of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), nitrotyrosine, myeloperoxidase (MPO) and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4-HNE) positive cells and increased levels of 8-isoprostane and lactoferrin were found in sputum of non-symptomatic smokers compared to non-smokers, and especially in subjects with stable mild to moderate COPD, and they correlated with the severity of airway obstruction. This suggests that an increased oxidant burden exists already in the airways of smokers with normal lung function values. However, none of these markers could differentiate healthy smokers from symptomatic smokers with normal lung function values i.e. those individuals who are at risk of developing COPD. In contrast what is known about asthma exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) was lower in smokers than in non-smokers, the reduced FENO value was significantly associated with neutrophilic inflammation and the elevated oxidant burden (positive cells for iNOS, nitrotyrosine and MPO). The levels of sputum MMP-8 and plasma MMP-12 appeared to differentiate subjects who have a risk for COPD development but these finding require further investigations. The levels of all studied MMPs correlated with the numbers of neutrophils, and MMP-8 and MMP-9 with markers of neutrophil activation (MPO, lactoferrin) suggesting that especially neutrophil derived oxidants may stimulate the tissue destructive MMPs already in lungs of smokers who are not yet experiencing any airflow limitation. When investigating the role of neutrophil proteases (neutrophil elastase, MMP-8, MMP-9) during COPD exacerbation and its recovery period, we found that levels of all these proteases were increased in sputum of patients with COPD exacerbation as compared to stable COPD and controls, and decreased during the one-month recovery period, giving evidence for a role of these enzymes in COPD exacerbations. In the last study, the effects of subject`s age and smoking habits were evaluated on the plasma levels of surfactant protein A (SP-A), SP-D, MMP-9 and TIMP-1. Long-term smoking increased the levels of all of these proteins. SP-A most clearly correlated with age, pack years and lung function decline (FEV1/FVC), and based on the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, SP-A was the best marker for discriminating subjects with COPD from controls. In conclusion, these findings support the hypothesis that especially neutrophil derived oxidants may activate MMPs and induce an active remodeling process already in the lungs of smokers with normal lung function values. The marked increase of sputum levels of neutrophil proteases in smokers, stable COPD and/or during its exacerbations suggest that these enzymes play a role in the development and progression of COPD. Based on the comparison of various biomarkers, SP-A can be proposed to serve as sensitive biomarker in COPD development.

We predict the dynamic light scattering intensity S(q,t) for the L3 phase (anomalous isotropic phase) of dilute surfactant solutions. Our results are based on a Landau-Ginzburg approach, which was previously used to explain the observed static structure factor S(q, 0). In the extreme limit of small q, we find a monoexponential decay with marginal or irrelevant hydrodynamic interactions. In most other regimes the decay of S(q,t) is strongly nonexponential; in one case, it is purely algebraic at long times.
