Viability of seeds in food products proposed for field trips in Galapagos

Seeds of 14 plant species extracted from food products proposed for field trips in Galapagos were tested for viability. Strawberry Fragaria ananasa and Blackberry Rubus glaucus jams (Snob and Gustadina brands) contained no viable seeds. Schullo brand granola contained inviable Sesame Sesamum indicum seed, but Sesame in granolas prepared in Galapagos was viable. Sesame seed in bread was viable but Flax Linum usitatissimum seed in bread was not. Brown Rice Oryza sativa and Sunflower seeds Helianthus annuus were both viable. Fresh Apple Malus domestica, Naranjilla Solanum quitoense, Cucumber Cucumis sativus, Pineapple Ananas comosus, Pear Pyrus communis, Bell Pepper Capsicum annuum, Tomato Solanum lycopersicum, Grape Vinis vinifera all contained viable seeds. The Coleopteran fauna of exposed riverine sediments on the River Dane, Cheshire: A survey report

This is the Coleopteran Fauna of ERS on the river Dane, Cheshire: a survey report produced by the Environment Agency in 2003. A comprehensive survey of the Exposed Riverine Sediment (ERS) on the River Dane, Cheshire was undertaken between mid-April and mid-June 2003. 6 locations were selected and subsequently examined to determine the importance of the constituent invertebrate fauna. Appropriate sampling techniques (i.e. pitfall trapping, hand searching and excavations) were directed towards the target group (Coleoptera). All adults from the chosen taxa were identified to species level. The relative value of the fauna was assessed using species richness, conservation status, fidelity score and a site quality index.

Stock assessment of sin croaker Johnieops sina (Cuvier) from Bombay waters

Growth, mortality and stock parameters of Johnieops sina (Cuvier) based on the data collected from 1989 to 1994 from Sassoon Dock and New Ferry Wharf landing centres of Greater Bombay has been discussed here. The von Bertallanffy's growth parameters for this species were estimated as follows, L∞= 266 mm, K=0.91 per year and W∞=193 g. This species grows to 159 and 223 mm at the end of first and second year of its life. The mortality parameters estimated were Z=6.17, M=2. 03 and F=4.14. The E and U were calculated as 0.62 and 0.63 respectively. Length cohort and Thompson Bell analyses show that there is no decline in the catches at the present level of fishing. But even by doubling the efforts the catches can go up by only 9.4 % indicating that the fishing efforts is not economical and proportional to the increase in yield.

The use of fibre optic sensors to monitor pipeline response to tunnelling

This paper describes the use of fibre optic sensing with Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry (BOTDR) for near-continuous (distributed) strain monitoring of a large diameter pipeline, buried in predominantly granular material, subjected to a pipe jack tunnelling operation in London Clay. The pipeline, buried at shallow depth, comprises 4.6 m long sections connected with standard bell and spigot type joints, which connect to a continuous steel pipeline. In this paper the suitability of fibre optic sensing with BOTDR for monitoring pipeline behaviour is illustrated. The ability of the fibre optic sensor to detect local strain changes at joints and the subsequent impact on the overall strain profile is shown. The BOTDR strain profile was also used to infer pipe settlement through a process of double-integration and was compared to pipe settlement measurements. The close approximation of the measured pipe settlement provides further confidence in fibre optic strain sensing with BOTDR to investigate the intricacies of pipeline behaviour, pipe-soil interaction and interaction between pipe sections when subjected to ground movement.
