Recent research has generally shown that a small change in the number of species in a food web can have consequences both for community structure and ecosystem processes. However 'change' is not limited to just the number of species in a community, but might include an alteration to such properties as precipitation, nutrient cycling and temperature, all of which are correlated with productivity. Here we argue that predicted scenarios of global change will result in increased plant productivity. We model three scenarios of change using simple Lotka-Volterra dynamics, which explore how a global change in productivity might affect the strength of local species interactions and detail the consequences for community and ecosystem level stability. Our results indicate that (i) at local scales the average population size of consumers may decline because of poor quality food resources, (ii) that the strength of species interactions at equilibrium may become weaker because of reduced population size, and (iii) that species populations may become more variable and may take longer to recover from environmental or anthropogenic disturbances. At local scales interaction strengths encompass such properties as feeding rates and assimilation efficiencies, and encapsulate functionatty important information with regard to ecosystem processes. Interaction strengths represent the pathways and transfer of energy through an ecosystem. We examine how such local patterns might be affected given various scenarios of 'global change' and discuss the consequences for community stability and ecosystem functioning. (C) 2004 Elsevier GmbH. This article reports upon results from a European Union funded project on the integration of children of international migrants in Britain, France and Germany. It provides both a descriptive and a multivariate analysis of the factors that determine attitudes towards ideal family size. The results reveal that there are large differences between ethnic groups in Britain: Indian and Pakistani respondents in Britain expressed a preference for significantly larger families. However, many children of international migrants expressed a desire for smaller families than the autochthonous population in both countries. This was particularly the case for Portuguese respondents in France and Turks in Germany. Religious affiliation also had a significant effect, above and beyond ethnicity per se. Both Moslems and Christians preferred larger families than those with no religious affiliation. The article concludes that ethnic differences in attitudes towards fertility behaviour will remain important in the foreseeable future in western Europe, particularly in Britain.

Context: In nondiabetic pregnancy, cross-sectional studies have shown associations between maternal dyslipidemia and preeclampsia (PE). In type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), the prevalence of PE is increased 4-fold, but prospective associations with plasma lipoproteins are unknown.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to define lipoprotein-related markers and potential mechanisms for PE in T1DM.
Design and Settings: We conducted a multicenter prospective study in T1DM pregnancy.
Patients: We studied 118 T1DM women (26 developed PE, 92 remained normotensive). Subjects were studied at three visits before PE onset [12.2 1.9, 21.6 1.5, and 31.5 1.7 wk gestation (means SD)] and at term (37.6 2.0 wk). Nondiabetic normotensive pregnant women (n 21) were included for reference.
Main Outcome Measures: Conventional lipid profiles, lipoprotein subclasses [defined by size (nuclear magnetic resonance) and by apolipoprotein content], serum apolipoproteins (ApoAI, ApoB, and ApoCIII), and lipolysis (ApoCIII ratio) were measured in T1DM women with and without subsequent PE.
Results: In women with vs. without subsequent PE, at the first and/or second study visits: lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, particle concentrations of total LDL and large (but not small) LDL, serum ApoB, and ApoB:ApoAI ratio were all increased (P 0.05); peripheral lipoprotein lipolysis was decreased (P0.01). These early differences remained significant in covariate analysis (glycated hemoglobin, actual prandial status, gravidity, body mass index, and diabetes duration) but were not present at the third study visit. High-density lipoprotein and very low-density lipoprotein subclasses did not differ between groups before PE onset.
Conclusions: Early in pregnancy, increased cholesterol-rich lipoproteins and an index suggesting decreased peripheral lipolysis were associated with subsequent PE in T1DM women. Background maternal lipoprotein characteristics, perhaps masked by effects of late pregnancy, may influence PE risk.

This paper discusses the application of the Taguchi experimental design approach in optimizing the key process parameters for micro-welding of thin AISI 316L foil using the 100W CW fibre laser. A L16 Taguchi experiment was conducted to systematically understand how the power, scanning velocity, focus position, gas flow rate and type of shielding gas affect the bead dimensions. The welds produced in the L16 Taguchi experiment was mainly of austenite cellular-dendrite structure with an average grain size of 5µm. An exact penetration weld with the largest penetration to fusion width ratio was obtained. Among those process parameters, the interaction between power and scanning velocity presented the strongest effect to the penetration to fusion width ratio and the power was found to be the predominantly important factor that drives the interaction with other factors to appreciably affect the bead dimensions.

The electrochemical uptake of oxygen on a Ru(0001) electrode was investigated by electron diffraction, Auger spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. An ordered (2 × 2)-O overlayer forms at a potential close to the hydrogen region. At +0.42 and +1.12 V vs Ag/AgCl, a (3 × 1) phase and a (1 × 1)-O phase, respectively, emerge. When the Ru electrode potential is maintained at +1.12 V for 2 min, RuO2 grows epitaxially with its (100) plane parallel to the Ru(0001) surface. In contrast to the RuO domains, the non-oxidized regions of the Ru electrode surface are flat. If, however, the electrode potential is increased to +1.98 V for 2 min, the remaining non-oxidized Ru area also becomes rough. These findings are compared with O overlayers and oxides on the Ru(0001) and Ru(101¯1) surfaces created by exposure to gaseous O under UHV conditions. On the other hand, gas-phase oxidation of the Ru(101¯0) surface leads to the formation of RuO with a (100) orientation. It is concluded that the difference in surface energy between RuO(110) and RuO(100) is quite small. RuO again grows epitaxially on Ru(0001), but with the (110) face oriented parallel to the Ru(0001) surface. The electrochemical oxidation of the Ru(0001) electrode surface proceeds via a 3-dimensional growth mechanism with a mean cluster size of 1.6 nm, whereas under UHV conditions, a 2-dimensional oxide film (1-2 nm thick) is epitaxially formed with an average domain size of 20 µm. © 2000 American Chemical Society.

The structure of a Pt(111) electrode after treatment in an electrolyte and subsequent transfer to an UHV chamber was investigated ex situ by combined low energy electron diffraction (LEED), reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Treatment of the sample in a CO saturated 0.1 M HClO solution at potentials between -0.2 and 0.2 V versus Ag/AgCl caused a maximum CO coverage of about 0.75 as probed by cyclic voltammetry, which dropped by partial desorption to about 0.25 upon transfer to the UHV chamber. This adlayer exhibited a (distorted) 3×3 R30° pattern by RHEED (but not with LEED) exhibiting an average domain size of 2.3 nm at room temperature. This is identified with the same phase reported before from gas phase studies, as also corroborated by the similarities of the vibrational spectroscopic data. The same structure (albeit even more poorly ordered) was found after dissociative adsorption of methanol.
