Linear arrangement of metallic and superconducting defects in a thin superconducting sample

The vortex matter in a superconducting disk with a linear configuration of metallic and superconducting defects is studied. Effects associated to the pinning (anti-pinning) force of the metallic (superconducting) defect on the vortex configuration and on the thermodynamic critical fields are analyzed in the framework of the Ginzburg Landau theory. We calculate the loop of the magnetization, vorticity and free energy curves as a function of the magnetic field for a thin disk. Due to vortex-defect attraction for a metallic defect (repulsion for a superconducting defect), the vortices always (never) are found to be sitting on the defect position. © 2013.

Genetic parameters for scrotal circumference, breeding soundness examination and sperm defects in young Nellore bulls

A total of 51,161 records of scrotal circumference measurements at 18 mo of age (SCI 8) and 17,648 records of sperm defects and breeding soundness of Nellore bulls (mean age of 22.5 mo), raised under extensive conditions, were analyzed to estimate coefficients of heritability and genetic correlations of morphological semen traits by Bayesian inference. The observed semen traits were classified as minor (MID). major (MAD), and total sperm defects (TD). The animals were classified according to breeding soundness as satisfactory and unsatisfactory potential breeders. The (co)variance components and breeding values were estimated by Gibbs sampling using the GIBBS2F90 program under an animal model that included contemporary group as fixed effect, age of animal as linear covariate, and direct additive genetic effects as random effects. Heritabilities of 0.40 ± 0.02, 0.16 ± 0.02, 0.04 ± 0.01, 0.15 ± 0.01, and 0.10 ± 0.01 were obtained for SCI8, MID, MAD, TD, and breeding soundness, respectively. The SC18 showed a positive and moderate correlation with breeding soundness (0.56 ± 0.04) and a negative and low correlation with MID (-0.23 ± 0.03), MAD (-0.16 ± 0.02), and TD (-0.24 ± 0.02). In conclusion, scrotal circumference showed the best response to selection among the traits studied and was favorably correlated with breeding soundness and sperm morphology in young Nellore bulls. © 2013 American Society of Animal Science. Would right atrial stretch inhibit sodium intake following GABAA receptor activation in the lateral parabrachial nucleus?

The knowledge of the mechanisms underlying circulating volume control may be achieved by stretching a balloon placed at the junction of the superior vena cava-right atrial junction (SVC-RAJ). We investigated whether the inflation of a balloon at the SVC-RAJ inhibits the intake of 0.3M NaCl induced by GABAA receptor activation in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) in euhydrated and satiated rats. Male Wistar rats (280-300g) with bilateral stainless steel LPBN cannulae and balloons implanted at the SVC-RAJ were used. Bilateral injections of the GABAA receptor agonist muscimol (0.5ηmol/0.2l) in the LPBN with deflated balloons increased intake of 0.3M NaCl (30.1±3.9 vs. saline: 2.2±0.7)ml/210min, n=8) and water (17.7±1.9 vs. saline: 2.9±0.5ml/210min). Conversely, 0.3M NaCl (27.8±2.1ml/210min) and water (22.8±2.3ml/210min) intake were not affected in rats with inflated balloons at the SVC-RAJ. The results show that sodium and water intake induced by muscimol injected into the LPBN was not affected by balloon inflation at the SVC-RAJ. We suggest that the blockade of LPBN neuronal activity with muscimol injections impairs inhibitory mechanisms activated by signals from cardiopulmonary volume receptors determined by balloon inflation. © 2013 The Authors.

Modulação nitrérgica na regulação ocitocinérgica da secreção do peptídeo natriurético atrial em cardiomiócitos

Historicamente conhecida por suas ações sobre o sistema reprodutor, hoje se sabe que a ocitocina (OT) também pode contribuir para a regulação da homeostase cardiovascular e hidroeletrolítica. A OT é produzida nos núcleos supra-óptico e paraventricular do hipotálamo e liberada para o plasma a partir de terminais neurais da pituitária posterior, no entanto, muitos estudos identificaram locais extra-cerebrais de produção OT, incluindo o coração e o endotélio vascular. A ativação de seus receptores em células endoteliais, bem como em sistemas hipotalâmicos/hipofisários e cardíaco, pode resultar na produção de óxido nítrico (NO). O presente trabalho teve como objetivo verificar o papel do NO na regulação da secreção de peptídeo natriurético atrial (ANP) estimulada por OT em cultura primária de cardiomiócitos de embriões de camundongos. Para tal, corações de embriões de camundongos Balb C, com 19 a 21 dias de vida intra-uterina, foram isolados e cultivados para os ensaios com OT e demais substâncias interferentes na síntese de NO e GMPc seu segundo mensageiro. A adição de concentrações crescentes de OT (0.1, 1, 10 e 100 μM) induziu aumento proporcional na secreção de ANP e nitrato para o meio, confirmando a ação estimuladora da OT em cardiomiócitos. O bloqueio da liberação de ANP estimulada por OT (10 μM) foi observada após adição de Ornitina Vasotocina (CVI-OVT) (100 μM), um antagonista específico de OT. Este antagonista inibiu a secreção basal de ANP, quando adicionado individualmente, sugerindo que a OT pode atuar via mecanismo autócrino, tônico estimulatório sobre a secreção de ANP. Amplificação da secreção de ANP estimulada por OT (10 μM) foi observada após sua associação com L-NAME, um inibidor da sintase de óxido nítrico (NOS) (600 μM), e ODQ (100 μM), um inibidor da guanilato ciclase solúvel, sugerindo a ocorrência de feedback negativo nitrérgico na liberação de ANP estimulada por OT no cardiomiócito. Os resultados obtidos mostraram modulação nitrérgica inibidora sobre a secreção de ANP estimulada por OT.

A rare non-Robertsonian translocation involving chromosomes 15 and 21

CONTEXTO:Translocações robertsonianas (TR) estão entre os rearranjos estruturais balanceados mais comuns em humanos e compreendem a fusão da cromatina completa do braço longo de dois cromossomos acrocêntricos. No entanto, são raras as translocações não Robertsonianas envolvendo esses cromossomos.RELATO DE CASO:Nós descrevemos uma translocação não balanceada de novo envolvendo os cromossomos 15 e 21. A recém-nascida era filha de uma mãe de 29 anos e de um pai de 42 anos, casal não consanguíneo. Os achados clínicos levaram ao diagnóstico de síndrome de Down (SD) com defeitos cardíacos congênitos graves (persistência do canal arterial e defeito do septo atrioventricular completo), além de baixos comprimento e peso ao nascimento (< 5o e < 10o percentil em curvas de medidas específicas para SD, respectivamente). A análise citogenética convencional revelou o cariótipo 46,XX,der(15)(15pter→15q26.2

The introduction of type-II defects is discussed under the Lagrangian formalism and Lax representation for the N = 1 super-Liouville model. We derive a new kind of super-Backlund transformation for the model and show explicitly the conservation of the modified energy and momentum, as well as supercharge.
