Our understanding of the centennial-scale variability of the Brazil Current (BC) during the late Holocene is elusive because of the lack of appropriate records. Here we used the Mg/Ca and oxygen isotopic composition of planktonic foraminifera from two marine sediment cores collected at 27° S and 33° S off southeastern South America to assess the late Holocene variability in the upper water column of the BC. Our results show in phase fluctuations of up to 3 °C in sea surface temperatures (SST), and 0.8 per mil in oxygen isotopic composition of surface sea water, a proxy for relative sea surface salinity (SSS). Time-series analyses of our records indicate a cyclicity with a period of ca. 730 yr. We suggest that the observed cyclicity reflects variability in the strength of the BC associated to changes in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). Positive (negative) SST and SSS anomalies are related to a strong (weak) BC and a weak (strong) AMOC. Moreover, periods of peak strength in the BC occur synchronously to a weak North Brazil Current, negative SST anomalies in the high latitudes of the North Atlantic, and positive (negative) precipitation anomalies over southeastern South America (equatorial Africa), further corroborating our hypothesis. This study shows a tight coupling between the variability of the BC and the high latitudes of the North Atlantic mediated by the AMOC even under late Holocene boundary conditions.

Mineral and chemical compositions, as well as conditions of formation of clay sediments in major structural elements of the Pacific Ocean floor with different ages are under consideration in the monograph. Depending on evolution of the region two ways of clay sediment formation are identified: terrigenous and authigenic. It is shown that terrigenous clay sediments predominate in marginal parts of the Pacific Ocean. Authigenic mineral formation occurring in the basal part of the sedimentary cover primarily results from removal of material from underlying basalts. This material is released during secondary alteration of the basalts due to their interaction with sea water, as well as with deep solutions.

We conducted an integrated paleomagnetic and rock magnetic study on cores recovered from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1276 and 1277 of the Newfoundland Basin. Stable components of magnetization are determined from Cretaceous-aged sedimentary and basement cores after detailed thermal and alternating-field demagnetization. Results from a series of rock magnetic measurements corroborate the demagnetization behavior and show that titanomagnetites are the main magnetic carrier. In view of the normal polarity of magnetization and radiometric dates for the sills at Site 1276 (~98 and ~105 Ma, both within the Cretaceous Normal Superchron) and for a gabbro intrusion in peridotite at Site 1277 (~126 Ma, Chron M1), our results suggest that the primary magnetization of the Cretaceous rocks is likely retained in these rocks. The overall magnetic inclination of lithologic Unit 2 in Hole 1277A between 143 and 180 meters below seafloor is 38°, implying significant (~35° counterclockwise, viewed to the north) rotation of the basement around a horizontal axis parallel to the rift axis (010°). The paleomagnetic rotational estimates should help refine models for the tectonic evolution of the basement. The mean inclinations for Sites 1276 and 1277 rocks imply paleolatitudes of 30.3° ± 5.1° and 22.9° ± 12.0°, respectively, with the latter presumably influenced by tectonic rotation. These values are consistent with those inferred from the mid-Cretaceous reference poles for North America, suggesting that the inclination determinations are reliable and consistent with a drill site on a location in the North America plate since at least the mid-Cretaceous. The combined paleolatitude results from Leg 210 sites indicate that the Newfoundland Basin was some 1800 km south of its current position in the mid-Cretaceous. Assuming a constant rate of motion, the paleolatitude data would suggest a rate of 12.1 mm/yr for the interval from ~130 Ma (Site 1276 age) to present, and 19.6 mm/yr for the interval from 126 Ma (Site 1277 age) to recent. The paleolatitude and rotational data from this study are consistent with the possibility that Site 1276 may have passed over the Canary and Madeira hotspots that formed the Newfoundland Seamounts in the mid-Cretaceous.

A palynological investigation of a Holocene profile from Lake Voulkaria, western Greece, was carried out as a contribution to the environmental history of the coastal area of northwestern Acarnania and the Classical city of Palairos. It shows that deciduous oaks dominated the natural vegetation of the area throughout the Holocene. Until ca. 7000 B.C. Pistacia occurred abundantly, while other evergreen woody taxa were rare. At ca. 6300 B.C. an expansion of Carpinus orientalis/Ostrya can be observed. Around ca. 5300 B.C. spreading of Erica indicates a change to a drier climate and/or first human impact. Since ca. 3500 B.C. an increase of evergreen shrubs now clearly indicates land-use. The foundation of the Classical city of Palairos led to a temporary expansion of Phillyrea maquis. Within this period, molluscs of brackish water indicate the use of the lake as a harbour after the construction of a connection to the sea. The deciduous Quercus woodland recovered when human impact decreased in the area, and lasted until modern times.
