Dois experimentos foram realizados para avaliar os efeitos da substituição do feno de coastcross por casca de soja, sobre o comportamento ingestivo e sobre a digestibilidade dos nutrientes no trato digestório total de ovinos. No primeiro experimento, 48 borregas, com peso inicial médio de 23,1 kg e 124 dias de idade foram distribuídas em blocos completamente ao acaso. O tratamento controle foi composto por feno de coastcross e concentrado (50:50). Nos demais, a casca de soja substituiu o feno em 12,5, 25 e 37,5% da matéria seca (MS) da dieta. Tempos de ingestão e ruminação foram determinados a cada cinco minutos durante 24 horas. Houve efeito linear decrescente no comportamento ingestivo, à medida que se aumentou a casca de soja na dieta. No segundo experimento, quatro borregos foram distribuídos em quadrado latino 4x4 e submetidos aos mesmos tratamentos do primeiro experimento. Houve efeito linear crescente da casca de soja sobre o consumo e digestibilidade da MS, da matéria orgânica (MO), da fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e da hemicelulose, e sobre o consumo da fibra em detergente ácido. A casca de soja possui menor quantidade de FDN fisicamente efetiva, em comparação à FDN de feno de coastcross e, ao ser adicionada em dietas para borregas até 37,5% da MS, aumenta a digestibilidade da MS e da MO.

Objectives: Benign Oral Vascular Lesions (BOVLs) are a group of vascular diseases characterized by congenital, inflammatory or neoplastic vascular dilations clinically evidenced as more or less wide masses of commonly dark bluish color. If traumatized BOVLs are characterized by a great risk of hemorrhage and their treatment usually requires great caution to prevent massive bleeding. In the last decades lasers have dramatically changed the way of treatment of BOVLs permitting the application of even peculiar techniques that gave interesting advantages in their management reducing hemorrhage risks. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capabilities and disadvantages of three laser assisted techniques in the management of BOVLs. Study design: In this study 13 BOVLs were treated by three different laser techniques: the traditional excisional biopsy (EB), and two less invasive techniques, the transmucosal thermocoagulation (TMT) and the intralesional photocoagulation (ILP). Two different laser devices were adopted in the study: a KTP laser (DEKA, Florence, Italy, 532nm) and a GaAlAs laser (Laser Innovation, Castelgandolfo, Italy, 808nm) selected since their great effectiveness on hemoglobin. Results: In each case, lasers permitted safe treatments of BOVLs without hemorrhages, both during the intervention and in the post-operative period. The minimally invasive techniques (TMT and ILP) permitted even the safe resolution of big lesions without tissue loss. Conclusions: Laser devices confirm to be the gold standard in BOVLs treatment, permitting even the introduction of minimal invasive surgery principles and reducing the risks of hemorrhage typical of these neoplasms. As usual in laser surgery, it is necessary a clear knowledge of the devices and of the laser-tissue interaction to optimize the results reducing risks and disadvantages

Objective: to assess the agreement between different anthropometric markers in defining obesity and the effect on the prevalence of obese subjects. Methods: population-based cross-sectional study including 3213 women and 2912 men aged 35-75 years. Body fat percentage (%BF) was assessed using electric bioimpedance. Obesity was defined using established cut-points for body mass index (BMI) and waist, and three population-defined cut-points for %BF. Between-criteria agreement was assessed by the kappa statistic. Results: in men, agreement between the %BF cut-points was significantly higher (kappa values in the range 0.78 - 0.86) than with BMI or waist (0.47 - 0.62), whereas no such differences were found in women (0.41 - 0.69). In both genders, prevalence of obesity varied considerably according to the criteria used: 17% and 24% according to BMI and waist in men, and 14% and 31%, respectively, in women. For %BF, the prevalence varied between 14% and 17% in men and between 19% and 36% in women according to the cut-point used. In the older age groups, a fourfold difference in the prevalence of obesity was found when different criteria were used. Among subjects with at least one criteria for obesity (increased BMI, waist or %BF), only one third fulfilled all three criteria and one quarter two criteria. Less than half of women and 64% of men were jointly classified as obese by the three population-defined cut-points for %BF. Conclusions: the different anthropometric criteria to define obesity show a relatively poor agreement between them, leading to considerable differences in the prevalence of obesity in the general population.

Background Enzymatic biodiesel is becoming an increasingly popular topic in bioenergy literature because of its potential to overcome the problems posed by chemical processes. However, the high cost of the enzymatic process still remains the main drawback for its industrial application, mostly because of the high price of refined oils. Unfortunately, low cost substrates, such as crude soybean oil, often release a product that hardly accomplishes the final required biodiesel specifications and need an additional pretreatment for gums removal. In order to reduce costs and to make the enzymatic process more efficient, we developed an innovative system for enzymatic biodiesel production involving a combination of a lipase and two phospholipases. This allows performing the enzymatic degumming and transesterification in a single step, using crude soybean oil as feedstock, and converting part of the phospholipids into biodiesel. Since the two processes have never been studied together, an accurate analysis of the different reaction components and conditions was carried out. Results Crude soybean oil, used as low cost feedstock, is characterized by a high content of phospholipids (900 ppm of phosphorus). However, after the combined activity of different phospholipases and liquid lipase Callera Trans L, a complete transformation into fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs >95%) and a good reduction of phosphorus (P <5 ppm) was achieved. The combination of enzymes allowed avoidance of the acid treatment required for gums removal, the consequent caustic neutralization, and the high temperature commonly used in degumming systems, making the overall process more eco-friendly and with higher yield. Once the conditions were established, the process was also tested with different vegetable oils with variable phosphorus contents. Conclusions Use of liquid lipase Callera Trans L in biodiesel production can provide numerous and sustainable benefits. Besides reducing the costs derived from enzyme immobilization, the lipase can be used in combination with other enzymes such as phospholipases for gums removal, thus allowing the use of much cheaper, non-refined oils. The possibility to perform degumming and transesterification in a single tank involves a great efficiency increase in the new era of enzymatic biodiesel production at industrial scale.

In recent years, a number of zoonotic flaviviruses have emerged worldwide, and wild birds serve as their major reservoirs. Epidemiological surveys of bird populations at various geographical scales can clarify key aspects of the eco-epidemiology of these viruses. In this study, we aimed at exploring the presence of flaviviruses in the western Mediterranean by sampling breeding populations of the yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis), a widely distributed, anthropophilic, and abundant seabird species. For 3 years, we sampled eggs from 19 breeding colonies in Spain, France, Algeria, and Tunisia. First, ELISAs were used to determine if the eggs contained antibodies against flaviviruses. Second, neutralization assays were used to identify the specific flaviviruses present. Finally, for colonies in which ELISA-positive eggs had been found, chick serum samples and potential vectors, culicid mosquitoes and soft ticks (Ornithodoros maritimus), were collected and analyzed using serology and PCR, respectively. The prevalence of flavivirus-specific antibodies in eggs was highly spatially heterogeneous. In northeastern Spain, on the Medes Islands and in the nearby village of L'Escala, 56% of eggs had antibodies against the flavivirus envelope protein, but were negative for neutralizing antibodies against three common flaviviruses: West Nile, Usutu, and tick-borne encephalitis viruses. Furthermore, little evidence of past flavivirus exposure was obtained for the other colonies. A subset of the Ornithodoros ticks from Medes screened for flaviviral RNA tested positive for a virus whose NS5 gene was 95% similar to that of Meaban virus, a flavivirus previously isolated from ticks of Larus argentatus in western France. All ELISA-positive samples subsequently tested positive for Meaban virus neutralizing antibodies. This study shows that gulls in the western Mediterranean Basin are exposed to a tick-borne Meaban-like virus, which underscores the need of exploring the spatial and temporal distribution of this flavivirus as well as its potential pathogenicity for animals and humans.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi selecionar o modelo de curvas de crescimento mais adequado e avaliar a influência de efeitos de ambiente e de grupo genético sobre os parâmetros estimados do modelo. Cinco modelos não lineares, Brody, Gompertz, Logístico, Von Bertalanffy e Richards, foram ajustados a dados de peso-idade coletados de 316 vacas, de quatro grupos genéticos: G (Nelore, ½Canchim + ½Nelore, ½Angus + ½Nelore e ½Simental + ½Nelore), do nascimento até 100 meses de idade; em duas estações do ano: E (primavera e outono). As vacas foram submetidas a dois níveis de concentrado (S) durante quatro meses, pós-desmama. O ajuste dos modelos foi realizado por mínimos quadrados ordinários, usando os pesos ponderado e não ponderado pelo inverso da variância. Os modelos Brody e Von Bertalanffy convergiram para todos os grupos genéticos; porém, o Brody foi o mais adequado. As estimativas do peso assintótico (A) e da taxa de maturação (k) do modelo Brody ponderado pelo inverso da variância foram analisadas por modelo misto, que incluiu efeito médio global e efeitos principais de G, E e S, e suas interações. O parâmetro A foi influenciado pelo efeito de G e E, enquanto k foi influenciado por S, o que indica que melhorias no manejo alimentar resultam em menor variação na forma das curvas de crescimento e em altas taxas de maturação.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of obesity markers to detect high (>5%) 10- year risk of fatal cardiovascular disease (CVD) as estimated using the SCORE function. Methods: Cross-sectional study including 3,047 women and 2,689 men aged 35-75 years (CoLaus study). Body fat percentage was assessed by tetrapolar bioimpedance. CVD risk was assessed using the SCORE risk function and gender and age-specific cut points for body fat were derived. The diagnostic accuracy of each obesity marker was evaluated through receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis. Results: Body fat presented a higher correlation with 10-year CVD risk than waist/hip ratio (WHR), waist or BMI: in men, r=0.31, 0.22, 0.19 and 0.12 and for body fat, WHR, waist and BMI, respectively; the corresponding values in women were 0.18, 0.15, 0.11 and 0.05, respectively (all p<0.05). In both genders, body fat showed the highest area under the ROC curve (AUC): in men, the AUC (and 95% confidence interval) were 76.0 (73.8 - 78.2), 67.3 (64.6 - 69.9), 65.8 (63.1 - 68.5) and 60.6 (57.9 - 63.5) for body fat, WHR, waist and BMI, respectively. In women, the corresponding values were 72.3 (69.2 - 75.3), 66.6 (63.1 - 70.2), 64.1 (60.6 - 67.6) and 58.8 (55.2 - 62.4). The use of body fat percentage criterion enabled to capture three times more subjects with high CVD risk than BMI criterion, and almost twice as much as WHR criterion.. Conclusions: Obesity defined by body fat percentage is more accurate to detect high 10-year risk of fatal CVD than obesity markers based on WHR, waist or BMI.

Objectives: The ortopantomography (OPG) can be a valuable way for an early detection of calcified atheroma plaques, thus contributing for a preliminary stroke risk evaluation. The study looks for the existence of calcified atheroma plates through the use of OPG, comparing the results with the stenosis percentage found through eco-doppler. It has been analyzed the correlation of the number of years as a smoker, arterial hypertension and body mass index, against the risk of having calcified atheroma plaques. Study Design: Observational, transversal and prospective study with 84 patients from the Dental Center of Hospital Particular de Lisboa. First the patients answered to an inquiry and them they were submitted to an OPG and an eco-doppler. Results and Conclusions: It is possible to detect calcified atheroma plaques in the carotid artery through an OPG and patients who have them have got a fifteen fold greater risk of suffering from carotid stenosis. In this study, it has been confirmed the increase in carotid stenosis for long term smokers (OR = 1,033, n=18, 42,9%). The study results show that hypertension patients have a probability 5,426 greater than normal of developing atheroma plaques (with sig=0,049). Amid analyzed patients, the correlation between obesity and the existence of carotid atheroma plaques was significant, although negative (sig=0,047). Objective: To assess the possibility of Dentists being able to screen patients with higher risk of vascular diseases. Materials: Kodak 8000C Orthopantomographer, eco-Doppler Logiq-500 General Electric at the Lisbon Hospital Particular. Methods: Assessment of orthopantomographies made to 142 patients aged 50 or more, as well as the existing risk factors. Conduction of carotid eco-Doppler to patients who appear to have calcified plaques of the atheroma. Results: Strong dependence between dichotomised age and having the pathology (p = 0.02).Smokers are twice more likely to present plaques (OR= 2). Being hypertensive increases in about 1.4 the likelihood of having a stroke (OR= 1.4). Of the 27 individuals who presented calcifications in the Orthopantomography, they were all submitted to an eco-Doppler and 21 had the pathology confirmed. 27 individuals, who did not show any plaques in the Orthopantomography, were randomly selected to be the control group. They were submitted to an eco-Doppler. And 23 confirmed the non-existence of plaques. Conclusions: Orthopantomography used for assessing the oral cavity reveals more information which should be the object of the Dentist"s attention

Kaatopaikalle sijoitetut biohajoavat orgaaniset jätteet muodostavat jätetäytön hapettomissa olosuhteissa kaatopaikkakaasua, joka koostuu pääasiassa metaanista ja hiilidioksidista. Kaatopaikkakaasun sisältämän metaanin takia, kaasusisältää merkittävästi energiaa, joka on hyödynnettävissä eri tavoin. Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli tarkastella vaihtoehtoja Anjalankosken Keltakankaan kaatopaikoilla muodostuvan kaatopaikkakaasun hyödyntämiseksi. Tarkastellut vaihtoehdot tarjoavat ympäristöllisten hyötyjen lisäksi liiketoiminnallista hyötyä Ekoparkissa toimiville yrityksille. Tutkimuksessa tehdyt laskelmatosoittivat, että työssä tarkastellut kaatopaikkakaasun hyötykäyttövaihtoehdot ovat sekä taloudellisesti että kaasun riittävyyden kannalta hyödynnettävissä. Esimerkiksi kaatopaikkakaasun hyödyntämisellä kaukolämmön tuotannossa voidaan kattaa noin kolmannes Anjalankosken vuotuisesta kaukolämmön tarpeesta. Kaatopaikkakaasun lietteen kuivauskapasiteetti kattaa Pohjois-Kymenlaaksossa muodostuvan jätevesilietteen käsittelytarpeen. Biopolttoaineen kuivauskapasiteetti on riittävä olemassa oleviin valmistuslaitosten tuotantokapasiteetteihin verrattuna. Myös perinteisillä sähkön- ja lämmöntuotantotekniikoilla voidaan kattaa Ekoparkin oma sähkön- ja lämmöntarve. Kaatopaikkavesien haihdutus ei tulosten perusteella ole sekä taloudellisesti että kaasun riittävyyden kannalta hyödynnettävissä. Tuhkan vitrifioinnissa haasteen muodostaa investointikustannuksen suuruus. Anjalankosken Ekoparkin yritykset voivat hyödyntää työn tuloksia uuden liiketoiminnan kehittämiseen. Lisäksi tuloksia voidaan hyödyntää soveltaen eri kokoluokan kaatopaikkojen kaatopaikkakaasujen hyötykäyttöä suunniteltaessa.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli tutkia toimintatapoja ja edellytyksiä parantaa Oras Oy:n valimon raaka-aine- ja energiatehokkuutta. Tarkastelu suoritettiin ekotehokkuusajattelun näkökulmasta. Valimon ekotehokkuutta mitattiin metallin saannon sekä valu-uunien energiatehokkuuden avulla. Tutkimustyö suoritettiin valitsemalla tarkastelun kohteeksi 20 valutuotetta. Metallin saantoa selvitettäessä punnittiin tuotteita eri työvaiheissa,jolloin saatiin selville valukanavien sekä koneistus- ja hiontavarojen osuudet valutuotteisiin panostetusta messingistä. Saantoa laskettaessa tuli myös huomioida vuosittain hylättävien tuotteiden määrät sekä messingin raaka-ainekierto kokonaisuudessaan. Valu-uunien osalta selvitettiin toiminta-ajan ja energiankulutuksen jakautuminen messingin sulattamisen ja sulan kuumanapidon kesken. Työssä tarkasteltiin, kuinka paljon metallin saantoa voitaisiin parantaa pienentämällä valukanavien ja työvarojen osuutta valoksissa sekä vähentämällähylkyjen määrää. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin muutosten vaikutuksia raaka-ainekustannuksiin sekä jätteiden määrään. Valu-uunien energiatehokkuuden parantamisen osaltatarkasteltiin käyttöasteen nostamisen eli viikoittaisen käyntiajan lisäämisen vaikutuksia energiankulutukseen ja -kustannuksiin sekä edellytyksiä pitää osa uuneista kylmänä.

Pesquisou-se o efeito do estádio de desenvolvimento de embriões resgatados na obtenção de plantas em cruzamentos entre genitores apirenos de videira, utilizando dois métodos de cultivo in vitro de sementes-traço. No método 1 (M1), as sementes-traço foram cultivadas 60 dias em meio-de-cultura ER e no método 2 (M2) 60 dias em ER, mais 30 dias em meio-de-cultura MS. O estádio de desenvolvimento do embrião foi identificado no final destes períodos, quando do resgate e transferência para meio-de-cultura WP. Quatro tipos de embriões foram identificados: globular, cordiforme, torpedo e indefinido. O estádio globular foi encontrado com maior freqüência, levando à obtenção de maior número de plantas, mesmo tendo apresentado menor capacidade de gerar plantas. A maior eficiência em gerar plantas foi obtida com o estádio torpedo. No M2, ocorreu maior número de embriões germinados e de plantas desenvolvidas. Como o estádio de desenvolvimento do embrião influencia na obtenção de plantas, o resgate de embriões em estádio mais avançado do seu desenvolvimento leva a tem maior capacidade de gerar plantas. Portanto, uso de técnicas que favoreçam o resgate de embriões mais desenvolvidos pode aumentar o número de plantas obtidas.

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tutkia sellu- ja paperiteollisuuden toimintojen luonnetta sekä miten yrityksen rajapinnat ovat muodostuneet ko. teollisuudenalalla. Tutkimus on eksploratiivinen ja luonteeltaan kvalitatiivinen. Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin yrityksissä tehdyillä teemahaastatteluilla. Sellu- ja paperitehtaan toimintojen analysoinnissa käytetään resurssiperusteista näkemystä ja transaktiokustannusteoriaa. Tutkimuksen yritysten rakennetta voidaan pitää varsin konservatiivisena. Teoreettinen kehys pystyi selittämään varsinaisen tuotannon järjestämistä varsin hyvin. Tukitoiminnoissa löytyi ristiriitoja teorian ja todellisuuden välillä. Tuotantotoiminnot kannattaa pitää yrityksen sisällä, koska ne täyttävät VRIN-attribuutit ja niihin liittyy korkeita transaktiokustannuksia. Suurin osa tukitoiminnoista voidaan luokitella triviaaleiksi. Joitain tukitoimintoja voidaan kuitenkin luokitella strategisesti tärkeiksi, ja voidaan päätellä, että ne pitäisi pitää yrityksen sisällä. Tässä suhteessa tulokset olivat kuitenkin ristiriitaisia, ja lisätutkimuksia tarvittaisiin lopullisten johtopäätösten tekemiseen.
