Neodymium doped yttrium aluminoborate and yttrium calcium borate glasses were prepared by the conventional melting-quenching technique with neodymium concentration varying from 0.10 to 1.0 mol%. The obtained glasses present a wide transparency in the UV-visible region (till 240 nm). The thermoluminescent (TL) emission of beta-irradiated samples was measured, showing a broad peak at similar to 240 degrees C with intensities related to the Nd(3+) content, for both glasses. Calcium borate glass samples are about one order of magnitude less luminescent than the aluminoborate glasses. Probably the presence of Ca(2+), instead of Al(3+) and Y(3+) in the matrix, inhibits the production of the intrinsic hole centers. connected to boron and oxygen, known in the literature to act as luminescent centers in TL emission of borate glasses. We suggest that Nd(3+) ions act as electron trapping centers in both glass matrices, as they modify the temperature of emission and the light intensity. Also, the Nd:YAIB glass can be used as a dosimeter in various applications, including radiotherapy. but the sensitivity of this material to neutron should be checked. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The third-order optical susceptibility and dispersion of the linear refractive index of Er(3+)-doped lead phosphate glass were measured in the wavelength range between 400 and 1940 nm by using the spectrally resolved femtosecond Maker fringes technique. The nonlinear refractive index obtained from the third-order susceptibility was found to be five times higher than that of silica, indicating that Er(3+)-doped lead phosphate glass is a potential candidate to be used as the base component for the fabrication of photonic devices. For comparison purposes, the Z-scan technique was also employed to obtain the values of the nonlinear refractive index of Er(3+)-doped lead phosphate glass at several wavelengths, and the values obtained using the two techniques agree to within 15%.

Lithium nitrate has been used to prevent and to mediate the expansion caused by alkali-silica reaction (ASR). However, there is limited information on how it affects the existing reaction products caused by ASR. The aim of the present work is to determine the modifications caused by the LiNO3 treatment on the structure of the gel produced by ASR. ASR gel samples obtained from a concrete dam were exposed to an aqueous solution of lithium nitrate and sodium hydroxide with molar LiNO3/NaOH = 0.74, and the resulting products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance of Si-29, Na-23, and Li-7. The treatment of the gel samples produces significant structural modifications in ASR products. A new amorphous silicate compound incorporating Li+ ions is formed, with an average silicate network that can be described as linear in contrast with the layered structure of the original gel. This elimination of the layered structure after the Li-based treatments may be related to the reduction of the tendency of the gel to expand. Also, several crystalline compounds containing potassium indicate the release of this species from the original ASR gel.

This work presents the optical properties of erbium-doped and erbium/ytterbium codoped Na(2)O-Al(2)O(3)-TiO(2)-Nb(2)O(5)-P(2)O(5) glass systems and also the characterization of planar waveguides obtained by typical thermally assisted Ag+<-> Na+ ion-exchange process. The glass systems allow the preparation of single mode and multimode planar waveguides presenting a strong and relatively broad emission at 1536 nm. The emission signal in the infrared region is intensified for silver-containing samples when compared with free-silver samples. The emission signal intensification may be attributed to a nonplasmonic energy transfer from silver species to Er3+ ions as no bands related to surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of silver nanoparticles were observed.

The lavas produced by the Timanfaya eruption of 1730-1736 (Lanzarote, Canary Islands) contain a great many sedimentary and metamorphic (metasedimentary), and mafic and ultramafic plutonic xenoliths. Among the metamorphosed carbonate rocks (calc-silicate rocks [CSRs]) are monomineral rocks with forsterite or wollastonite, as well as rocks containing olivine +/- orthopyroxene +/- clinopyroxene +/- plagioclase: their mineralogical compositions are identical to those of the mafic (gabbros) and ultramafic (dunite, wherlite and lherzolite) xenoliths. The (87)Sr/(16)Sr (around 0.703) and (143)Nd/(144)Nd (around 0.512) isotope ratios of the ultramafic and metasedimentary xenoliths are similar, while the (147)Sm/(144)Nd ratios show crustal values (0.13-0.16) in the ultramafic xenoliths and mantle values (0.18-0.25) in some CSRs. The apparent isotopic anomaly of the metamorphic xenoliths can be explained in terms of the heat source (basaltic intrusion) inducing strong isotopic exchange ((87)Sr/(86)Sr and (143)Nd/(144)Nd) between metasedimentary and basaltic rocks. Petrofabric analysis also showed a possible relationship between the ultramafic and metamorphic xenoliths. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Turkestanite, a rare Th- and REE-bearing cyclosilicate in the ekanite-steacyite group was found in evolved peralkaline granites from the Morro Redondo Complex, south Brazil. It occurs with quartz, alkali feldspar and an unnamed Y-bearing silicate. Electron microprobe analysis indicates relatively homogeneous compositions with maximum ThO(2), Na(2)O and K(2)O contents of 22.4%, 2.93% and 3.15 wt.%, respectively, and significant REE(2)O(3) abundances (5.21 to 11.04 wt.%). The REE patterns show enrichment of LREE over HREE, a strong negative Eu anomaly and positive Ce anomaly, the latter in the most transformed crystals. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry trace element patterns display considerable depletions in Nb, Zr, Hf, Ti and Li relative to whole-rock sample compositions. Observed compositional variations suggest the influence of coupled substitution mechanisms involving steacyite, a Na-dominant analogue of turkestanite, iraqite, a REE-bearing end-member in the ekanite-steacyite group, ekanite and some theoretical end-members. Turkestanite crystals were interpreted as having precipitated during post-magmatic stages in the presence of residual HFSE-rich fluids carrying Ca, the circulation of which was enhanced by deformational events.

The Early Cretaceous alkaline magmatism in the northeastern region of Paraguay (Amambay Province) is represented by stocks, plugs, dikes, and dike swarms emplaced into Carboniferous to Triassic-Jurassic sediments and Precambrian rocks. This magmatism is tectonically related to the Ponta Pora Arch, a NE-trending structural feature, and has the Cerro Sarambi and Cerro Chiriguelo carbonatite complexes as its most significant expressions. Other alkaline occurrences found in the area are the Cerro Guazu and the small bodies of Cerro Apua, Arroyo Gasory, Cerro Jhu, Cerro Tayay, and Cerro Teyu. The alkaline rocks comprise ultramafic-mafic, syenitic, and carbonatitic petrographic associations in addition to lithologies of variable composition and texture occurring as dikes; fenites are described in both carbonatite complexes. Alkali feldspar and clinopyroxene, ranging from diopside to aegirine, are the most abundant minerals, with feldspathoids (nepheline, analcime), biotite, and subordinate Ti-rich garnet; minor constituents are Fe-Ti oxides and cancrinite as the main alteration product from nepheline. Chemically, the Amambay silicate rocks are potassic to highly potassic and have miaskitic affinity, with the non-cumulate intrusive types concentrated mainly in the saturated to undersaturated areas in silica syenitic fields. Fine-grained rocks are also of syenitic affiliation or represent more mafic varieties. The carbonatitic rocks consist dominantly of calciocarbonatites. Variation diagrams plotting major and trace elements vs. SiO(2) concentration for the Cerro Sarambi rocks show positive correlations for Al(2)O(3), K(2)O, and Rb, and negative ones for TiO(2), MgO, Fe(2)O(3), CaO, P(2)O(5), and Sr, indicating that fractional crystallization played an important role in the formation of the complex. Incompatible elements normalized to primitive mantle display positive spikes for Rb, La, Pb, Sr, and Sm, and negative for Nb-Ta, P, and Ti, as these negative anomalies are considerably more pronounced in the carbonatites. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns point to the high concentration of these elements and to the strong LRE/HRE fractionation. The Amambay rocks are highly enriched in radiogenic Sr and have T(DM) model ages that vary from 1.6 to 1.1 Ga. suggesting a mantle source enriched in incompatible elements by metasomatic events in Paleo-Mesoproterozoic times. Data are consistent with the derivation of the Cerro Sarambi rocks from a parental magma of lamprophyric (minette) composition and suggest an origin by liquid immiscibility processes for the carbonatites. A conductive and electrochemically active composite material has been prepared by the combination of bentonite and nickel hydroxide precursor sol. This material exhibits the characteristic intercalation properties of the clay component and the electrochemical and optical properties of nickel hydroxide. The clay particles seem to induce the aggregation of nickel hydroxide, leading to the formation of a layer of alpha-Ni(OH)(2) exhibiting needle like morphology. The composite forms stable films and has been conveniently used for the preparation of modified electrodes exhibiting intercalation and electrochemical properties, thus providing an interesting material for the development of amperometric sensors. Resonance Raman, FTIR, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis-NIR, electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray absorption at Si K-edge and electron microscopy were employed for characterizing the products formed through electrochemical oxidation of intercalated anilinium ions inside the cationic montmorillonite (MMT) clay. The layer silicate structure was not affected by the anilinium oxidation between the layers. The intercalated products present only an electronic absorption band at 400 nm, very low conductivity (ca. 10(-7) S cm(-1)) and their Raman spectrum displays bands, with high relative intensities, assigned to the benzidine dication, indicating that this product was formed in high amount. Nevertheless, bands that can be correlated to phenazine-like segments and 1,4-phenylenediamine repeat units (PANI like segments) are also observed. The very low EPR signal indicates that diamagnetic species are predominant. All results are compared to those obtained by anilinium-MMT chemically oxidized by persulfate and the differences are pointed out. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thioredoxin (Trx1), a very important protein for regulating intracellular redox reactions, was immobilized on iron oxide superparamagnetic nanoparticles previously coated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) via covalent coupling using the EDC (1-ethyl-3-{3-dimethylaminopropyl}carbodiimide) method. The system was extensively characterized by atomic force microscopy, vibrational and magnetic techniques. In addition, gold nanoparticles were also employed to probe the exposed groups in the immobilized enzyme based on the SERS (surface enhanced Raman scattering) effect, confirming the accessibility of the cysteines residues at the catalytic site. For the single coated superparamagnetic nanoparticle, by monitoring the enzyme activity with the Ellman reagent, DTNB=5,5`-dithio-bis(2-15 nitrobenzoic acid), an inhibitory effect was observed after the first catalytic cycle. The inhibiting effect disappeared after the application of an additional silicate coating before the AFTS treatment, reflecting a possible influence of unprotected iron-oxide sites in the redox kinetics. In contrast, the doubly coated system exhibited a normal in-vitro kinetic activity, allowing a good enzyme recovery and recyclability. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The polymerization of the intercalated aniline ions was studied in three different clays, Swy2-montmorillonite (MMT), synthetic mica-montmorillonite (Synl) and pillarized Swy2-montmorillonite (PILC). PANI is formed between the MMT and Syn1 clay layers, being confirmed by the shift of d(001) peak in the X-ray pattern. X-ray Absorption near to Si K edge (Si K XANES) data show that the structures of clays are preserved after the polymerization process and in addition to the SEM images show that morphologies of the clays are maintained after polymerization, indicating no polymerization in their external surface. UV-vis-NIR and resonance Raman data display that the PANI formed in Syn1 galleries has higher amount of phenazinic rings than observed for PANI intercalated in montmorillonite (MMT) clay. No polymer formation was detected in the PILC. N K XANES and EPR spectroscopies show the presence of azo and radical nitrogen in intercalated PAN! chains. Hence, the results are rationalized considering the structural differences between the clays for understanding the role of the anilinium polymerization within the clays galleries. A novel material comprised of bacterial cellulose (BC) and Laponite clay with different inorganic organic ratios (m/m) was prepared by the contact of never-dried membranes of BC with a previous dispersion of clay particles in water. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) data of composite materials revealed an effective adhesion of clay over the surface of BC membrane; inorganic particles also penetrate into the polymer bulk, with a significant change of the surface topography even at 5% of clay loading. As a consequence, the mechanical properties are deeply affected by the presence of clay, increasing the values of the Young modulus and the tensile strength. However the maximum strain is decreased when the clay content is increased in the composite in comparison to pristine BC. The main weight loss step of the composites is shifted towards higher temperatures compared to BC, indicating that the clay particles slightly protect the polymer from thermal and oxidative decomposition. No presente trabalho, estudou-se o efeito inibidor do silicato de sódio na corrosão de uma liga de AI-Mg-Si em meio arejado e desarejado, contendo quantidades variadas de Ion cloreto no pW = 10,O . Nos diferentes tipos de ensaios realizados, tais como, traçado de curvas de polarização, ensaios galvanostáticos e com par galvânico, utilizou-se corpos de prova anodizados ou polidos. Os resultados experimentais mostraram que 1 g/l de silicato de sódio neutro de composição Na2O : 3.3 SiO2, demonstrou total efeito inibidor da corrosão da liga de A1-Mg-Si, em solução contendo até 60 p.p.m. de NaC1. Em concentrações de 1060 p.p,m. e maiores de NaC1, o silicato mostrou apenas efeito retardador da corrosão, com diminuição da incidência de pites. A análise dos produtos de corrosão, formadas sobre a superficie dos pites, feita usando-se raio-X e espectroscopia de infravermelho, mostrou que esses produtos têm estrutura amorfa e contêm silicato e grupos hidroxila. Finalmente, medidas de capacitância da dupla camada, confirmaram a existência de uma película que se forma sobre a superfície da liga de alumínio, quando em solução de silicato.

Este trabalho é camposto por dois estudos basicamente: um estudo teórico sobre os blocos sílico-calcários de areia-cal e um estudo prático sobre a viabilidade técnica de produção destes blocos em uma região determinada. A pesquisa teórica procurou elucidar o que vem a ser um bloco síilico-calcário, buscando a viabilidade da pesquisa prática e os pontos principais a serem abordados. Foram estudados, nesta parte, as matérias-primas e o processo produtivo empregado na confecção destes elementos, mostrando a importância de cada item para as características do produto final. Foi dada atenção ainda às características técnicas, aos fatores que determinam a produção e emprego e aos aspectos positivos e negativos dos elementos deste tipo produzido em outros locais. A pesquisa prática buscou a disponibilidade de matéria-prima conveniente para a produção de blocos sílicos-calcários, e o efeito das variações do processo produtivo sobre os produtos confeccionados com os materiais estudados. A matéria-prima empregada foi uma areia quartzosa da região de Santa Maria-RS, cal calcítica virgem de São Sepé-RS, e cinza volante da termoelétrica Presidente Médici, em Bagé-RS, fazendo-se variações nas percentagens destes componentes. As variações do processo produtivo foram efetuadas no tipo de moldagem dos corpos de prova, em que foi usada pressão, vibração e vibro-compressão, e na pressão de autoclavagem. Para todas as variações efetuadas foram obtidas as seguintes características: variações por autoclavagem, massa específica aparente, absorção d´água, resistência à compressão, resistência à tração e módulo de elasticidade à compressão, as quais foram relacionadas através de quadros e figuras às diversas variações.

O objeto deste trabalho é fornecer dados hidrológicos com fins de caracterização e monitoramento da região da Cadeia Norte do Brasil e da Cadeia de Fernando de Noronha, assim como levantar e sistematizar informações sobre a geoquímica dos diversos tipos de sedimentos encontrados na plataforma continental externa adjacente ao banco Aracati, contribuindo para o levantamento dos potenciais sustentáveis de exploração dos recursos vivos da Zona Econômica Exclusiva. A área em estudo compreende a sub-área II, setor 1 e parte do setor 2, e está localizada entre 1oN e 5oS de latitude e entre 30o e 40oW de longitude, abrangendo uma área de aproximadamente 400.000 km2. Foram analisadas amostras coletadas em 8 estações resultando em 20 amostras de sedimentos nos anos de 1997 (verão), 1998 (outono) e 2000 (primavera) e 34 estações que originaram 272 amostras de água na primavera de 2000. As concentrações máximas dos parâmetros analisados, com exceção do fosfato, nas amostras de água se localizam na região próxima à costa. Detectou-se na área uma termoclina bem marcada, sendo mais profunda na primavera. A camada de mistura é bastante homogênea, sendo porém, mais espessa na primavera. O pH detectado encontra-se na faixa alcalina sendo os maiores valores de pH detectados na primavera. Verifica-se, um máximo de salinidade na camada de inicio da termoclina sazonal. Não verificou-se na área condição anaeróbica na coluna d’água. A distribuição de fosfato, nitrato e silicato, apresenta-se de forma muito semelhante, sendo que na primavera essas concentrações são maiores, nas camadas superficiais. Na cobertura sedimentar da plataforma continental adjacente aos bancos da cadeia norte do Brasil, encontro-se areia quartzosa, areia carbonática, fragmentos de concha, Lithothanmium e Halimedas. Os fragmentos de concha apresentaram as maiores concentrações totais de metais, enquanto Lithothanmium apresentou o maior teor de carbonato. Há uma forte correlação entre ferro e manganês na amostras de água e em todas as frações de sedimentos analisadas, sendo que nestas a relação média entre estes elementos é da ordem de 1:25. Existe forte correlação entre cromo e carbonato nas amostras que apresentam teor de carbonato maior que 20%. As amostras de areia quartzosa, fragmentos de concha e Halimedas, apresentam-se muito semelhantes quanto à distribuição de ferro, manganês, zinco e cromo. Existe forte correlação nas amostras de sedimento, assim como nas amostras de água, entre ferro, manganês, zinco, correlacionando-se também nas amostras de sedimento com o chumbo. As 8 concentrações de metais nas amostras de água apresentaram-se relativamente baixas em se comparando com as amostras de sedimento. Nas amostras de água as concentrações de cromo e chumbo estão abaixo do limite de detecção.
