The Brazil´s Atlantic coastal forest biome is considered one of the richest and most exuberant biodiversity of the whole planet. Still, other data shows the reality of this Brazilian forest: more than 93% of its original formation has been already devastated, being the human actions the greatest threat to the perpetuation of the balance and diversity of this ecosystem. This destruction affects all the fauna and flora, with even greater impact on medium and large mammals, due to its high demand on the availability of resources, living area and sensitivity to disturbances. However, today it is known the vital importance of these mammals in the preservation and maintenance of biological systems. Thus, the purpose of this study was to survey the species richness of medium and large mammals in a remnant neotropical forest located in Itatinga, SP,Brazil, using the indirect method of recording (traces on sand-plots, marking territorial, faeces, carcasses, scratches on tree trunks and vocalizations) and camera trapping. Data were collected during ten (10) consecutive months in the year 2008, from February to November. Within twenty-five plots of sand installed and monitored during the ten months were found fifteen (15) species of terrestrial mammals of medium and large, five (5) orders and twelve (12) families. Among them, we highlight the presence of threated species like the puma (Puma concolor), the deer (Mazama gouazoubira) and the giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla). The chosen method showed up effective in raising terrestrial mammalian species of medium and large neotropical forest area, having a good applicability and advantages over other existing methods. The study area presents a huge diversity of species and, therefore, this work it is recommended to be only the beginning of new researches in the area in order to enrich... Spin incommensurability (IC) has been recently experimentally discovered in the hole-doped Ni-oxide chain compound Y2-xCaxBaNiO5 [G. Xu et al., Science 289, 419 (2000)]. Here a two orbital model for this material is studied using computational techniques. Spin IC is observed in a wide range of densities and couplings. The phenomenon originates in antiferromagnetic correlations across holes dynamically generated to improve hole movement, as it occurs in the one-dimensional Hubbard model and in recent studies of the two-dimensional extended t-J model. The close proximity of ferromagnetic and phase-separated states in parameter space is also discussed.

Surveillance and control activities related to bovine tuberculosis (TB) in free-ranging, Michigan white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have been underway for over a decade, with significant progress. However, foci of higher TB prevalence on private lands and limited agency ability to eliminate them using broad control strategies have led to development and trial of new control strategies, such as live trapping, testing, and culling or release. Such strategies require a prompt, accurate live animal test, which has thus far been lacking. We report here the ability of seven candidate blood assays to determine the TB infection status of Michigan deer. Our aims were twofold: to characterize the accuracy of the tests using field-collected samples and to evaluate the feasibility of the tests for use in a test-and-cull strategy. Samples were collected from 760 deer obtained via five different surveys conducted between 2004 and 2007. Blood samples were subjected to one or more of the candidate blood assays and evaluated against the results of mycobacterial culture of the cranial lymph nodes. Sensitivities of the tests ranged from 46% to 68%, whereas specificities and negative predictive values were all .92%. Positive predictive values were highly variable. An exploratory analysis of associations among several host and sampling-related factors and the agreement between blood assay and culture results suggested these assays were minimally affected. This study demonstrated the capabilities and limitations of several available blood tests for Mycobacterium bovis on specimens obtained through a variety of field surveillance methods. Although these blood assays cannot replace mass culling, information on their performance may prove useful as wildlife disease managers develop innovative methods of detecting infected animals where mass culling is publicly unacceptable and cannot be used as a control strategy.

In the mid-1820s, Anglo-American fur trappers, known as "mountain men," entered Arizona and began trapping beaver (Castor canadensis). In Arizona there have been a number of famous mountain men such as Sylvester and James Pattie, Ewing Young, Jededia Smith, and Bill Williams who trapped along the waterways in northern and southern Arizona. Although the heyday of mountain men lasted only a few decades due to a population decline of beaver, management of these animals continues to this day. The purpose of managing beavers shifted from monetary gain to controlling wildlife damage. During the late 1900s, beaver were still widely distributed in limited numbers throughout much of the state. We provide a historical overview of beaver management in Arizona with emphasis on the mountain men, recreational trapping, wildlife damage management, and beaver research in Arizona.
