Infrastructure, transport and integration: the link with productive development and regional competitiveness

A vision of the role played by infrastructure, transport and related services in the development of competitiveness and productivity is fundamental for proposing public policies linked to productive development. In particular, the supply costs and the quality of public utility and transport services are extremely relevant to countries’ productivity, GDP growth and competitiveness, and also for the development and economic integration of Latin America.

Energy efficiency in freight transport by road

This issue of the FAL Bulletin addresses energy efficiency and its challenges in terms of freight transport by road. To this end, different national plans for energy efficiency in transport were reviewed, for both developed countries and for Latin America.

Competition and complementarity between road and rail transport in the carriage of freight

A seminar on competition and complementarity between road and rail transport in the carriage of freight was conducted at ECLAC Headquarters on 6-7 November 2001. The seminar was attended by experts on transport matters from a range of countries, and their presentations covered the current state of integration of transport in countries like Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico. Also in attendance was an expert from Central America, who spoke about modal integration of freight transport in that region. Three round-table discussions were held with the participation of representatives of the trucking and rail sectors, drawn from both the private and public spheres.

The need to establish coordinated measures for the reduction of road accidents in Latin America and the Caribbean

This edition of the FAL Bulletin approaches road safety and the need for urgent, coordinated measures to be established between the public and private sectors and civil society in order to prevent the rapid increase in deaths and casualties in road accidents in Latin America and the Caribbean, an issue which is threatening the sustainability of regional development.

Toward an integrated transport policy: institutions, infrastructure and logistics - the case in Chile

This edition of the FAL Bulletin presents a summary of the major outcomes of the workshop, “Toward an integrated transport policy: institutions, infrastructure and logistics”, which was organized by the ECLAC Infrastructure Services Unit, in late 2009. The objective of the event was to analyse the various government bodies involved in the transport sector, Chile’s experience in formulating transport policy and the challenge that formulating and executing integrated policies entails.

Progress of road maintenance in Latin America

Road maintenance work has gradually been increasing in Latin America. Existing contracts in Argentina, Chile, Guatemala and Uruguay - 210 overall - account for a total of 20,212 kilometers of public roadways by level of service. In Brazil, Ecuador and Peru, 26 contracts are now in the pipeline for the maintenance of 7,700 kilometres of roadway. This issue of the FAL Bulletin presents a survey of the status of road maintenance considered at the second Seminar of the Americas of the Road Maintenance Training Programme (Provial), held in Lima, Peru from 18 to 21 October 1999 and which examined the type of financing used in road maintenance as well as contracts, institutions and interaction between the public and private sectors.
