A theoretical approach to the energy transfer process that occurs between a ligand and a rare-earth ion in luminescent complexes is presented. A discussion on the energy transfer mechanisms involved and on the associated selection rules is made. Numerical estimates are also presented.

This paper presents and discusses some of the results of the effects of processing on rare earth-doped nanosize SnO2. Several relevant factors that may influence the characteristics of the final product are studied. The influence of two preparation routes and two heat-treatment conditions on the incorporation of dopants is investigated. The route whereby a soluble salt is used as the dopant source is found to provide the highest degree of dopant incorporation, even under the least favorable heat-treatment conditions.

Luminescent spectra of Eu3+-doped sol-gel glasses have been analyzed during the densification process and compared according to the presence or not of aluminum as a codoping ion. A transition temperature from hydrated to dehydroxyled environments has been found different for doped and codoped samples. However, only slight modifications have been displayed from luminescence measurements beyond this transition. To support the experimental analysis, molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to model the doped and codoped glass structures. Despite no evidence of rare earth clustering reduction due to aluminum has been found, the modeled structures have shown that the luminescent ions are mainly located in aluminum-rich domains. The synthesis of both experimental and numerical analyses has lead us to interpret the aluminum effect as responsible for differences in structure of the luminescent sites rather than for an effective dispersion of the rare earth ions. The tin dioxide is an n-type semiconductor, which exhibits varistor behavior with high capacity of absorption of energy, whose function is to restrict transitory over-voltages without being destroyed, when it is doped with some oxides. Varistors are used in alternated current fields as well as in continuous current, and it can be applied in great interval of voltages or in great interval of currents. The electric properties of the varistor depend on the defects that happen at the grain boundaries and the adsorption of oxygen. The (98.90-x)%SnO2.0.25%CoO+0.75%MnO2+0.05%Ta2O5+0.05%Tr2O3 systems, in which Tr=La or Nd. Current-voltage measurements were accomplished for determination of the non-linear coefficient were studied. SEM microstructure analysis was made to evaluate the microstructural characteristics of the systems. The results showed that the rare-earth oxides have influenced the electrical behavior presented by the system. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

A salt elimination reaction between [YCl3(THF)(3.5)] and 1 or 2 equiv. of Tl(Tp(Ms*)) [Tp(Ms*) = HB(3-mesitylpyrazolyl)2(5-mesitylpyrazolyl)(-)] leads in both cases to single metathesis, giving a mixture of the mono-Tp(Ms*) complex [YCl3(Tp(Ms*))Tl] (1) and another complex, [YCl2(Tp(Ms* *))] (2) [Tp(Ms* *) = HB(3-mesitylpyrazolyl)(5-mesitylpyrazolyl)(2)(-)], that results from the transfer of a second mesityl group to the 5-position of the pyrazolyl ring. The solid-state structure of 1 shows a unique ate dimeric structure with the TV cations coordinated by two mu(2)- and two mu(3)-bridging Cl atoms as well as two eta(3)-mesityl ligands. Monodisperse spheres of silica and latex were obtained by a surfactant free styrene polimerization and the Stober method respectively. Controlling settling either by centrifugation or by dip-coating colloidal crystals could be obtained. Silica inverse opals were prepared by using the latex colloidal crystals as templates and TEOS/ethanol solution. Eu3+ containing silica spheres were obtained dispersing silica spheres in Eu(NO3)(3) isopropanol solutions. Emission spectra suggest the formation of an amorphous Eu3+ containing phase well adhered at the spheres surface. The utilization of solutions of trifluoroacetates salts of Pb2+ and Eu3+ was observed to destroy the silica spherical pattern when samples are treated at 1000degreesC. In that case nanocrystals of PbF2 and amorphous silica were obtained after heat treatment.

We present photoluminescence and decay of photo excited conductivity data for sol-gel SnO(2) thin films doped with rare earth ions Eu(3+) and Er(3+), a material with nanoscopic crystallites. Photoluminescence spectra are obtained under excitation with several monochromatic light sources, such as Kr(+) and Ar(+) lasers, Xe lamp plus a selective monochromator with UV grating, and the fourth harmonic of a Nd: YAG laser (4.65eV), which assures band-to-band transition and energy transfer to the ion located at matrix sites, substitutional to Sn(4+). The luminescence structure is rather different depending on the location of the rare-earth doping, at lattice symmetric sites or segregated at grain boundary layer, where it is placed in asymmetric sites. The decay of photo-excited conductivity also shows different trapping rate depending on the rare-earth concentration. For Er-doped films, above the saturation limit, the evaluated capture energy is higher than for films with concentration below the limit, in good agreement with the different behaviour obtained from luminescence data. For Eu-doped films, the difference between capture energy and grain boundary barrier is not so evident, even though the luminescence spectra are rather distinct.

The theory of vibronic transitions in rare earth compounds is re-examined in the light of a more reliable representation for the ligand field Hamiltonian than the crude electrostatic model. General expressions that take into account the relevant contributions from the forced electric dipole and dynamic coupling mechanisms are derived for the vibronic intensity parameters. These include additional terms, from charge and polarizability gradients, which have not been considered in previous work. Emphasis is given to the relative signs of these various contributions. Under certain approximations these expressions may be conveniently written in terms of accessible ligand field parameters. A comparison with experimental values for the compounds Cs2NaEuCl6 and LiEuF4 is made and satisfactory agreement between theory and experiment is found. A discussion is given on the sensitivity of the calculated intensities to the values of radial integrals, interconfigurational energy differences and ligand field parameters that may be used. Finally, the problem in which a vibronic and an electronic level are in resonance, or near resonance, is analyzed. Suitable expressions to describe the effects of the even-rank components of the vibronic Hamiltonian are obtained. It is found that, depending on the strength of the vibronic interaction and the resonance conditions, the admixture between these two levels may lead to intensities of nearly equal values. © 1995.

We report the successful fabrication of planar waveguides in rare-earth doped fluoroindate glass substrates. A new procedure for waveguide fabrication using a thermally evaporated AgF nonmetallic film was developed. The refractive index changes of more than 0.03, associated to low propagation losses achieved, open new perspectives and show the potentiality of using this glass family toward further developments in fabrication and design of integrated optical devices for optical communication wavelengths.© 1995 American Institute of Physics.

We study the pattern of gluino cascade decays in a class of supersymmetric models where R-parity is spontaneously broken. We give a detailed discussion of the R-parity violating decays of the lightest neutralino, the second lightest neutralino and the lightest chargino. The multi-lepton and same-sign dilepton signal rates expected in these models are compared with those predicted in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We show that these rates can be substantially enhanced in broken R-parity models. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Bose-Einstein correlations are studied in semileptonic (WW → qq̄lv) and fully hadronic (WW → qq̄qq̄) W-pair decays with the ALEPH detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies of 172, 183 and 189 GeV. They are compared with those made at the Z peak after correction for the different flavour compositions. A Monte Carlo model of Bose-Einstein correlations based on the JETSET hadronization scheme was tuned to the Z data and reproduces the correlations in the WW → qq̄lv events. The same Monte Carlo reproduces the correlations in the WW → qq̄qq̄ channel assuming independent fragmentation of the two W's. A variant of this model with Bose-Einstein correlations between decay products of different W's is disfavoured. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
