A key unresolved question in population ecology concerns the relationship between a population's size and its growth rate. We estimated this relationship for 1780 time series of mammals, birds, fish, and insects. We found that rates of population growth are high at low population densities but, contrary to previous predictions, decline rapidly with increasing population size and then flatten out, for all four taxa. This produces a strongly concave relationship between a population's growth rate and its size. These findings have fundamental implications for our understanding of animals' lives, suggesting in particular that many animals in these taxa will be found living at densities above the carrying capacity of their environments.

The suitability of cryopreservation for the secure, long-term storage of the rare and endangered species Cosmos atrosanguineus was investigated. Using encapsulation/dehydration of shoot tips in alginate strips, survival rates of up to 100 % and shoot regeneration of up to 35 % were achieved. Light and electron microscopy studies indicated that cellular damage to some regions of the shoot tip during the freeze/thaw procedure was high, although cell survival in and around the meristematic region allowed shoot tip regeneration. The genetic fingerprinting technique, amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs), showed that no detectable genetic variation was present between material of C. atrosanguineus at the time of initiation into tissue culture and that which had been cryopreserved, stored in liquid nitrogen for 12 months and regenerated. Weaned plantlets that were grown under glasshouse conditions exhibited no morphological variation from non-frozen controls.

Recent rapid developments in biological analysis, medical diagnosis, pharmaceutical industry, and environmental control fuel the urgent need for recognition of particular DNA sequences from samples. Currently, DNA detection techniques use radiochemical, enzymatic, fluorescent, or electrochemiluminescent methods; however, these techniques require costly labeled DNA and highly skilled and cumbersome procedure, which prohibit any in-situ monitoring. Here, we report that hybridization of surface-immobilized single-stranded oligonucleotide on praseodymium oxide (evaluated as a biosensor surface for the first time) with complimentary strands in solution provokes a significant shift of electrical impedance curve. This shift is attributed to a change in electrical characteristics through modification of surface charge of the underlying modified praseodymium oxide upon hybridization with the complementary oligonucelotide strand. On the other hand, using a noncomplementary single strand in solution does not create an equivalent change in the impedance value. This result clearly suggests that a new and simple electrochemical technique based on the change in electrical properties of the modified praseodymium oxide semiconductor surface upon recognition and transduction of a biological event without using labeled species is revealed.

Phenotypic and phylogenetic studies were performed on three strains of Gram-negative, rod-shaped organisms recovered from dead birds of the tit families (blue tit, coal tit and long-tailed tit). Morphological, cultural and biochemical studies indicated that the organisms were related to the family Cardiobacteriaceae in the gamma-subclass of the Proteobacteria. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies confirmed these findings and demonstrated that the bacterium represents a hitherto unknown subline within this family. The closest phylogenetic relative of the strains isolated from the birds was found to be Suttonella indologenes, although a sequence divergence of approximately 5 % demonstrated that the unknown bacterium represented a novel species. On the basis of the results of the phylogenetic analysis and phenotypic criteria, it is proposed that the bacteria recovered from the diseased birds represent a novel species, Suttonella ornithocola sp. nov., with strain B6/99/2(T) (=CCUG 49457(T)=NCTC 13337(T)) as the type strain.

Two mixed bridged one-dimensional (1D) polynuclear complexes, [Cu3L2(mu(1,1)-N-3)(2)(mu-Cl)Cl](n) (1) and {[Cu3L2(mu-Cl)(3)Cl]center dot 0.46CH(3)OH}(n), (2), have been synthesized using the tridentate reduced Schiff-base ligand HL (2-[(2-dimethylamino-ethylamino)-methyl]-phenol). The complexes have been characterized by X-ray structural analyses and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. In both complexes the basic trinuclear angular units are joined together by weak chloro bridges to form a 1D chain. The trinuclear structure of 1 is composed of two terminal square planar [Cu(L)(mu(1,1)-N-3)] units connected by a central Cu(II) atom through bridging nitrogen atoms of end-on azido ligands and the phenoxo oxygen atom of the tridentate ligand. These four coordinating atoms along with a chloride ion form a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry around the central Cu(II). The structure of 2 is similar; the only difference being a Cl bridge replacing the mu(1,1)-N-3 bridge in the trinuclear unit. The magnetic properties of both trinuclear complexes can be very well reproduced with a simple linear symmetrical trimer model (H = JS(i)S(i+1)) with only one intracluster exchange coupling (J) including a weak intertrimer interaction (.j) reproduced with the molecular field approximation. This model provides very satisfactory fits for both complexes in the whole temperature range with the following parameters: g = 2.136(3), J = 93.9(3) cm(-1) and zj= -0.90(3) cm(-1) (z = 2) for 1 and g = 2.073(7), J = -44.9(4) cm(-1) and zJ = -1.26(6) cm(-1) (z = 2) for 2.

Three novel mixed bridged trinuclear and one tetranuclear copper(II) complexes of tridentate NNO donor Schiff base ligands [Cu-3(L-1)(2)(mu(LI)-N-3)(2)(CH3OH)(2)(BF2)(2)] (1), [Cu-3(L-1)(2)(mu(LI)-NO3-I kappa O.2 kappa O')(2)] (2), [Cu-3(L-2)(2)(mu(LI)-N-3)(2)(mu-NOI-I kappa O 2 kappa O')(2)] (3) and [Cu-4(L-3)(2)(mu(LI)-N-3)(4)(mu-CH3COO-I kappa O 2 kappa O')(2)] (4) have been synthesized by reaction of the respective tridentate ligands (L-1 = 2[1-(2-dimethylamino-ethylimino)-ethyl]-phenol, L-2 = 2[1-(2-diethylamino-ethylimino)-ethyl]-phenol, L-3 = 2-[1-(2-dimethylamino-ethylimino)-methyl]-phenol) with the corresponding copper(II) salts in the presence of NaN3 The complexes are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and variable-temperature magnetic measurements Complex 1 is composed of two terminal [Cu(L-1)(mu(LI)-N-3)] units connected by a central [Cu(BF4)(2)] unit through nitrogen atoms of end-on azido ligands and a phenoxo oxygen atom of the tridentate ligand The structures of 2 and 3 are very similar, the only difference is that the central unit is [Cu(NO1)(2)] and the nitrate group forms an additional mu-NO3-I kappa O 2 kappa O' bridge between the terminal and central copper atoms In complex 4, the central unit is a di-mu(L1)-N-3 bridged dicopper entity, [Cu-2(mu(L1)-N-3)(2)(CH3COO)(2)] that connects two terminal [Cu(L-3)(mu(L1)-N-3)] units through end-on azido; phenoxo oxygen and mu-CH3COO-1 kappa O center dot 2 kappa O' triple bridges to result in a tetranuclear unit Analyses of variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data indicates that there is a global weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the copper(II) ions in complexes 1-3, with the exchange parameter J of -9 86, -11 6 and -19 98 cm(-1) for 1-3, respectively In complex 4 theoretical calculations show the presence of an antiferromagnetic coupling in the triple bridging ligands (acetato, phenoxo and azido) while the interaction through the double end-on azido bridging ligand is strongly ferromagnetic.

The primary objective was to compare the fat and fatty acid contents of cooked retail chickens from intensive and free range systems. Total fat comprised approximately 14, 2.5, 8, 9 and 15 g/100 g cooked weight in whole birds, skinless breast, breast with skin, skinless leg and leg meat with skin, respectively, with no effect of intensive compared with free range systems. Free range breast and leg meat contained significantly less polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-6 and n-3) than did those from intensive rearing and had a consistently higher n-6/n-3 ratio (6.0 vs. 7.9). Generally, the concentrations of long chain n-3 fatty acids were considerably lower than those reported in earlier research studies. Overall, there was no evidence that meat from free range chickens had a fatty acid profile that would be classified as healthier than that from intensively reared birds and indeed, in some aspects, the opposite was the case. An unusual hexanuclear Cu-II complex, [{[Cu(NHDEPO)](3)(mu(3)-O)(O3ClO)}(2)(mu-H)]center dot 7ClO(4)center dot 4H(2)O (1) was prepared starting from Cu(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and the oxime-based Schiff base ligand NHDEPO (= 3-[3-(diethylamino)propylimino]butan-2-one oxime). Structural characterization of the complex reveals that it consists of two triangular Cu3O units, the copper ions being at the corners of an equilateral triangle, separated by an O center dot center dot center dot O distance of 2,447(5) angstrom, held together solely by a proton. In each triangle, the copper atoms are in square-pyramid environments. The equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen of the central OH-(O2-) group together with three atoms (N, N, O) of the Schiff base. All Unusual triply coordinated perchlorate ion (mu(3)-kappa O:kappa O':kappa O '') interacts in axial position with the three copper ions, Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show that complex 1 is antiferromagnetically Coupled (J = -148 cm(1-)). The EPR data at low temperature clearly indicates the presence of spin frustration phenomenon in the complex.

Virulence for bean and soybean is determined by effector genes in a plasmid-borne pathogenicity island (PAI) in race 7 strain 1449B of Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola. One of the effector genes, avrPphF, confers either pathogenicity, virulence, or avirulence depending on the plant host and is absent from races 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 of this pathogen. Analysis of cosmid clones and comparison of DNA sequences showed that the absence of avrPphF from strain 1448A is due to deletion of a continuous 9.5-kb fragment. The remainder of the PAI is well conserved in strains 1448A and 1449B. The left junction of the deleted region consists of a chimeric transposable element generated from the fusion of homologs of IS1492 from Pseudomonas putida and IS1090 from Ralstonia eutropha. The borders of the deletion were conserved in 66 P. syringae pv. phaseolicola strains isolated in different countries and representing the five races lacking avrPphF. However, six strains isolated in Spain had a 10.5-kb deletion that extended 1 kb further from the right junction. The perfect conservation of the 28-nucleotide right repeat of the IS1090 homolog in the two deletion types and in the other 47 insertions of the IS1090 homolog in the 1448A genome strongly suggests that the avrPphF deletions were mediated by the activity of the chimeric mobile element. Our data strongly support a clonal origin for the races of P. syringae pv. phaseolicola lacking avrPphF.

Declines of farmland birds have been pronounced in landscapes dominated by lowland livestock production and densities of seed-eating birds are particularly low in such areas. Modern livestock production often entails a simple cropping system dominated by ley grassland and maize grown for animal feed. These crops often lack invertebrate and seed resources for foraging birds and can be hostile nesting environments. Cereal-based wholecrop silages (CBWCS) offer potential benefits for farmland birds because they can be grown with minimal herbicide applications and can be spring-sown with following winter stubbles. We compared the biodiversity benefits and agronomic yields of winter-sown wheat and spring-sown barley as alternatives to grass and maize silage in intensive dairy livestock systems. Seed-eating birds foraged mainly in CBWCS fields during summer, and mainly on barley stubbles during winter and this reflected the higher densities of seed-bearing plants therein. Maize and grass fields lacked seed-bearing vegetation and were strongly avoided by most seed-eating birds. Production costs of CBWCS are similar to those of maize and lower than those of grass silage. Selective (rather than broad-spectrum) herbicide application on spring barley crops increased forb cover, reduced yields (by 11%) but caused only a small (<4%) increase in production costs. CBWCS grown with selective herbicide and with following winter stubbles offer a practical conservation measure for seed-eating farmland birds in landscapes dominated by intensively-managed grassland and maize. However, the relatively early harvesting of CBWCS could destroy a significant proportion of breeding attempts of late-nesting species like corn bunting (Emberiza calandra) or yellow wagtail (Motocilla flava). Where late-breeding species are likely to nest in CBWCS fields, harvesting should be delayed until most nesting attempts have been completed (e.g. until after 1st August in southern Britain).
