Disadvantages of invariable cereal cropping, concern of nutrient leaching and prices of nitrogen (N) fertilizer have all increased during last decades. An undersown crop, which grows together with a main crop and after harvest, could mitigate all those questions. The aim of this study was to develop undersowing in Finnish conditions, so that it suits for spring cereal farming as well as possible and enhances taking care of soil and environment, especially when control of N is concerned. In total, 17 plant species were undersown in spring cereals during the field experiments between 1991-1999 at four sites in South and Central Finland, but after selection, eight of them were studied more thoroughly. Two legumes, one grass species and one mixture of them were included in long-term trials in order to study annually repeated undersowing. Further, simultaneous broadcasting of seeds instead of separate undersowing was studied. Grain yield response and the capacity of the undersown crop to absorb soil N or fix N from atmosphere, and the release of N were of greatest interest. Seeding rates of undersown crops and N fertilization rates during annually repeated undersowing were also studied. Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam., IR) absorbed soil nitrate N (NO3-N) most efficiently in autumn and timothy (Phleum pratense L.) in spring. The capacity of other grass species to absorb N was low, or it was insufficient considering the negative effect on grain yield. Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) suited well in annually repeated undersowing, supplying fixed N for cereals without markedly increased risk of N leaching. Autumn oriented growth rhythm of the studied legumes was optimal for undersowing, whereas the growth rhythm of grasses was less suited but varied between species. A model of adaptive undersowing system was outlined in order to emphasize allocation of measures according needs. After defining the goal of undersowing, many decisions are to be done. When diminishing N leaching is primarily sought, a mixture of IR and timothy is advantageous. Clovers suit for replacing N fertilization, as the positive residual effect is greater than the negative effect caused by competition. A mixture of legume and non legume is a good choice when increased diversity is the main target. Seeding rate is an efficient means for adjusting competition and N effects. Broadcasting with soil covering equipment can be used to establish an undersown crop. In addition, timing and method of cover crop termination have an important role in the outcome. Continuous observing of the system is needed as for instance conditions significantly affect growth of undersown crop and on the other hand N release from crop residues may increase in long run.

The memoirs were written in 2000 in California and contains some of the author's diary entries during the years of the family's emigration and reminiscences of the author's father. His father Max Stern took his graduate exam (Abitur) at the Jacobsohn boarding school in 1904 and was sent to a business school in Brussles, Belgium. Work in the family business M. Stern AG. World War One and rise of the family business with branches throughout Germany and offices in New York, London, Milan and Stockholm. Le Corbusier participated in an urban dialogue with the first group in France to call itself fascist: the journalist Georges Valois’s militant Faisceau des Combattants et Producteurs (1925-1927), the “Blue Shirts,” inspired by the Italian “Fasci” of Mussolini. Le Corbusier’s portrait photograph materialised on the front cover of the January 1927 issue of the Faisceau League’s newspaper Le Nouveau Siècle edited by the former anarcho-syndicalist journalist Georges Valois, its leader, who fashioned himself as the French Mussolini. Le Corbusier was described in the Revue as one of les animateurs (the “organisers”) of the Party1 – meaning a member of the technical elite who would drive the Faisceau’s plans. On 1 May 1927, the Nouveau Siècle printed a full-page feature “Le Plan Voisin” on Le Corbusier’s 1922 redesign of Paris : the architect’s single-point perspective sketch appeared below an extract lifted from the architect’s original polemic Le Centre de Paris on the pages of Le Corbusier’s second book Urbanisme published two years earlier, a treatise on urbanism.2 Three weeks later, Le Corbusier presented a slide show of his urban plans at a fascist rally for the inauguration of the Faisceau’s new headquarters on the rue du faubourg Poissonniere, thereby crystalising the architect’s hallowed status in the league...

This dissertation presents an analysis of the representations of food biotechnologies in Italy. The thesis uses the analysis of discourse to illustrate the articulated ways in which representations are instantiated in different contexts. The theoretical thrust of the work resides in its discussion of the basic tenets of both Social Representations Theory and Discursive Psychology. The thesis offers a detailed description of the two frameworks; affinities and difference are highlighted, and a serious effort is made to develop an integrated set of theoretical resources to answer the research questions. The thesis proposes to combine a discursive methodology with Social Representations Theory. After a description of the relevant legislative framework follows an illustration of the categories used for the textual analysis. The study proposes the textual analysis of the following data: the first declaration issued by a small Italian council rejecting biotechnologies; four texts which focus on positions taken by the Catholic Church in the matter of food biotechnologies; several transcripts from a public debate in a small community of the north west of Italy. The latter study, which included an ethnographic dimension, focuses on recordings from interviews, a focus group, a public meeting and newspaper articles. Particular attention is paid to ideological representations and to the relevance of citizenship and governance to debates about food biotechnologies.

We have studied in this paper the propagation of an isothermal shock in the radiative envelopes of the Bosman-Crespin model for a hot star and Boury’s model for a giant star. A spherically symmetric disturbance is supposed to be originated at or outside the surface of the convective core. We have used Whitham’s rule to study the variation in the shock strength and the shock velocity after modifying it for inclusion of pressure, energy and flux of radiation. We find the shock increases in strength as it propagates through the envelopes of decreasing density, pressure and temperature. The velocity of the shock decreases for very weak initial shock strengths, for intermediate initial shock strength it first decreases and then increases, while for large initial shock strength, it always increases. This aspect of the problem throws some light on the stability of the models under consideration.

The propagation of a shock wave of finite strength due to an explosion into inhomogeneous nongravitating and self-gravitating systems has been considered, using similarity principles, supposing that the density varies as an inverse power of distance from the centre of explosion. A large number of systems, characterised by different density exponents and different adiabatic coefficients of the gas have been considered for different shock strengths. The numerical integration from the shock inward has been continued to the surface of singularity where density tends to infinity and which acts like a piston in the self-gravitating case and to the surface where the velocity gradient tends to infinity in the nongravitating case. The effect of variation of shock strength, density exponent and adiabatic coefficient on the location of these singularities and on the distribution of flow parameters behind the shock has been studied. The initial energy of the system and the manner of release of the explosion energy influence strongly the flow behind the shock. The results have been graphically depicted.

The study of steady-state flows in radiation-gas-dynamics, when radiation pressure is negligible in comparison with gas pressure, can be reduced to the study of a single first-order ordinary differential equation in particle velocity and radiation pressure. The class of steady flows, determined by the fact that the velocities in two uniform states are real, i.e. the Rankine-Hugoniot points are real, has been discussed in detail in a previous paper by one of us, when the Mach number M of the flow in one of the uniform states (at x=+∞) is greater than one and the flow direction is in the negative direction of the x-axis. In this paper we have discussed the case when M is less than or equal to one and the flow direction is still in the negative direction of the x-axis. We have drawn the various phase planes and the integral curves in each phase plane give various steady flows. We have also discussed the appearance of discontinuities in these flows.

Tämän pro gradu-tutkielman tavoitteena oli kartoittaa voittoa tavoittelemattoman Slow Food-organisaation brandiin liitettyjä mielikuvia ja niitä tekijöitä, joilla brandin tavoitekuvaa tulisi jatkossa rakentaa. Koska nykyisin brandi ei ole enää pelkkien liikeyritysten yksityisomaisuutta, tutkimuksen teoreettinen asemointi perustui yhtäältä organisaation tunnettuuden kasvattamiseen brandin rakentamisen avulla ja toisaalta voittoa tavoittelemattoman toimintaympäristön erityispiirteiden näkökulmaan. Case-osion avulla haluttiin tarkastella globalisaation ja elintarviketalouden keskittymiselle vaihtoehtoisen, paikallisuuteen perustuvan ruokajärjestelmän vaikutuksia, mahdollisuuksia ja haasteita. Tutkimuksen empiirinen osuus muodostui laadullisesta tapaustutkimuksesta, jonka kohteena oli Slow Food-organisaatio. Tutkimus suoritettiin haastattelemalla kahtatoista Slow Food-organisaation sidosryhmien edustajaa Italian Piemontessa henkilökohtaisin haastatteluin, joiden pohjana oli brandi identiteetin elementeistä luodut kaksi teemaa: mielleyhtymiin ja arvoväittämään liittyvät tekijät. Aineiston analysoinnissa käytettiin teemoittelua ja sisällönanalyysia. Tutkimuksen lähestymistapa oli abduktiivinen. Tulosten mukaan Slow Food-brandi identifioituu sidosryhmilleen ensisijaisesti luotettavan ruoan kautta, johon katsottiin kuuluvan aidot, puhtaat raaka-aineet ja paikallisesti tuotetun ja jalostamattoman ruoan hyvä jäljitettävyys. Myös tiettyyn paikkaan ja arvoihin sidottujen kokemusten ja odostusten täyttymisen kautta saatu sosiaalinen ja kulttuurinen jatkuvuus nimettiin brandin vahvuudeksi. Lisäksi vastuullisen tuottamisen ja kuluttamisen sekä aitojen makujen ja laadukkaan ruokavalion edistäminen korostuivat jonkin verran vastauksissa. Näillä perusvahvuuksilla toivottiin brandin identiteettiä rakennettavan myös tulevaisuudessa. Haastateltavien mielestä Slow Food-organisaatio erilaistaa itsensä muista ensisijaisesti lupaamalla yksilölle korkealuokkaisia, aitoja tuotteita ja palveluja, joilla on henkilökohtaisten hyötyjen lisäksi positiivisia seuraamuksia myös oman alueen työllisyyden ja talouden kehitykseen. Organisaation tulisi myös jatkossa luoda uskottavuutta toimintaansa eritoten sen kautta, että brandi lunastaa lupauksensa laadusta ja aitoudesta. Toisaalta erottautuakseen muista lähi- ja luomuruokabrandeista Slow Food-brandin arvoväittämässä tulisi tulevaisuudessa selkeämmin korostua myös toiminnan voittoa tavoittelemattomuus ja brandiin liittyvä elämyksellisyys. Sidosryhmien kiinnostusta ja brandin lupauksen tehoa alentaviksi tekijöiksi nimettiin yleinen ruoan arvostuksen väheneminen sekä Slow Food-tuotteiden ja -palvelujen korkea hinta, huono saatavuus ja näkyvyys. Keskeisimpinä ratkaisuina pidettiin kuluttajien informatiivisen tiedon lisäämisen ohella pientuottajien verkostoitumista ja uusia yhteistyön muotoja kuten tuottajien yhteisiä jakeluketjuja ja paikallismyymälöitä. Näiden lisäksi brandin tunnistettavuuden parantaminen ja aktiivisempi tarjonta kyltityksin, tuotteiden pysyvän läsnäolon ja vähittäiskaupan mukaantulon kautta sekä eräät muut markkinoinnin osa-alueet kuten sosiaalinen media, Internet ja kansainväliset ruoka-alan tapahtumat nimettiin brandin lupausta kirkastaviksi elementeiksi. Pientuotannon lisääminen verotuksen kohdentumisen muutoksilla nähtiin keinoksi pudottaa paikallisen ruoan hintaa.Toisaalta korkeaa hintaa perusteltiin laadukkaaseen imagoon liittyvien argumenttien lisäksi luonnollisen kysynnän kasvulla, jota arveltiin saatavan tulevaisuudessa suurista ikäluokista, yhä kasvavasta koulutus- ja tulotasosta sekä valveutuneemmista kuluttajista.
