In the present investigation, Al2O3 thin films were deposited onto Si < 100 > substrates by DC reactive magnetron sputtering. The films were annealed in vacuum for one hour at 623, 823 and 1023 K. The composition of the films was quantitatively estimated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the O/Al ratio was found be in the range 1.19 to 1.43. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) results revealed that the annealed films are amorphous in nature. Cross sectional transmission electron microscopy (X-TEM) analysis was carried out to study the microstructure and nature of the Al2O3-Si interface as a function of post-deposition annealing. TEM results revealed the presence of nanocrystalline gamma-Al2O3 in the annealed films and an amorphous interface layer was observed at the Al2O3 Si interface. The thickness of the amorphous interface layer was determined from the TEM analysis and the results are discussed.

We have investigated the effect of post- deposition annealing on the composition and electrical properties of alumina (Al2O3) thin films. Al2O3 were deposited on n-type Si < 100 >. substrates by dc reactive magnetron sputtering. The films were subjected to post- deposition annealing at 623, 823 and 1023 K in vacuum. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed that the composition improved with post- deposition annealing, and the film annealed at 1023 K became stoichiometric with an O/Al atomic ratio of 1.49. Al/Al2O3/Si metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structures were then fabricated, and a correlation between the dielectric constant epsilon(r) and interface charge density Q(i) with annealing conditions were studied. The dielectric constant of the Al2O3 thin films increased to 9.8 with post- deposition annealing matching the bulk value, whereas the oxide charge density decreased to 3.11 x 10(11) cm(-2.) Studies on current-voltage IV characteristics indicated ohmic and Schottky type of conduction at lower electric fields (<0.16 MV cm(-1)) and space charge limited conduction at higher electric fields.

In this paper we present a framework for realizing arbitrary instruction set extensions (IE) that are identified post-silicon. The proposed framework has two components viz., an IE synthesis methodology and the architecture of a reconfigurable data-path for realization of the such IEs. The IE synthesis methodology ensures maximal utilization of resources on the reconfigurable data-path. In this context we present the techniques used to realize IEs for applications that demand high throughput or those that must process data streams. The reconfigurable hardware called HyperCell comprises a reconfigurable execution fabric. The fabric is a collection of interconnected compute units. A typical use case of HyperCell is where it acts as a co-processor with a host and accelerates execution of IEs that are defined post-silicon. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by evaluating the performance of some well-known integer kernels that are realized as IEs on HyperCell. Our methodology for realizing IEs through HyperCells permits overlapping of potentially all memory transactions with computations. We show significant improvement in performance for streaming applications over general purpose processor based solutions, by fully pipelining the data-path. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Active trailing edge flaps (TEFs) are one of the most promising devices for helicopter vibration reduction. Smart actuators such as the piezoelectric stack actuators (PEAs) are used for TEF actuation. PEAs possess high energy density and have large force in dynamic condition but are limited to small displacements. In this investigation, we study a linear to rotary motion amplification mechanism (AM-2) based on a pinned-pinned post-buckled beam to actuate trailing edge flaps. A linear motion amplification mechanism is developed and coupled with AM-2 to amplify angular flap deflections. Experiments are conducted on bench top-test setup, and maximum flap angle deflections of the order of 12A degrees are achieved in the static case. An aeroelastic analysis is performed and 91 % reduction in helicopter vibration is obtained with multiharmonic control inputs.

Histones regulate a variety of chromatin templated events by their post-translational modifications (PTMs). Although there are extensive reports on the PTMs of canonical histones, the information on the histone variants remains very scanty. Here, we report the identification of different PTMs, such as acetylation, methylation, and phosphorylation of a major mammalian histone variant TH2B. Our mass spectrometric analysis has led to the identification of both conserved and unique modifications across tetraploid spermatocytes and haploid spermatids. We have also computationally derived the 3-dimensional model of a TH2B containing nucleosome in order to study the spatial orientation of the PTMs identified and their effect on nucleosome stability and DNA binding potential. From our nucleosome model, it is evident that substititution of specific amino acid residues in TH2B results in both differential histone-DNA and histone-histone contacts. Furthermore, we have also observed that acetylation on the N-terminal tail of TH2B weakens the interactions with the DNA. These results provide direct evidence that, similar to somatic H2B, the testis specific histone TH2B also undergoes multiple PTMs, suggesting the possibility of chromatin regulation by such covalent modifications in mammalian male germ cells.

Tufted and plain unidirectional carbon fabric-reinforced epoxy composite laminates were fabricated by vacuum-enhanced resin infusion technology and subjected to in-plane tensile tests with a view to study the changes in mechanical properties and failure responses. Owing to the presence of tufts in the laminates, both the tensile strength and modulus decrease by similar to 38 and similar to 20%, respectively, vis-A -vis the values recorded for plain composites. The fracture features point to the fact that though both the composites fail in brittle manner, they, however, exhibit differing fiber pull out lengths. Further, it was noticed that for the tufted ones, crack originates in the vicinity of tuft thread, spreads through the composite in a brittle manner, and results in a display of shorter fiber pull out lengths. These observations and other results are discussed in this paper.

We compute the instantaneous contributions to the spherical harmonic modes of gravitational waveforms from compact binary systems in general orbits up to the third post-Newtonian (PN) order. We further extend these results for compact binaries in quasielliptical orbits using the 3PN quasi-Keplerian representation of the conserved dynamics of compact binaries in eccentric orbits. Using the multipolar post-Minkowskian formalism, starting from the different mass and current-type multipole moments, we compute the spin-weighted spherical harmonic decomposition of the instantaneous part of the gravitational waveform. These are terms which are functions of the retarded time and do not depend on the history of the binary evolution. Together with the hereditary part, which depends on the binary's dynamical history, these waveforms form the basis for construction of accurate templates for the detection of gravitational wave signals from binaries moving in quasielliptical orbits.

Oversmoothing of speech parameter trajectories is one of the causes for quality degradation of HMM-based speech synthesis. Various methods have been proposed to overcome this effect, the most recent ones being global variance (GV) and modulation-spectrum-based post-filter (MSPF). However, there is still a significant quality gap between natural and synthesized speech. In this paper, we propose a two-fold post-filtering technique to alleviate to a certain extent the oversmoothing of spectral and excitation parameter trajectories of HMM-based speech synthesis. For the spectral parameters, we propose a sparse coding-based post-filter to match the trajectories of synthetic speech to that of natural speech, and for the excitation trajectory, we introduce a perceptually motivated post-filter. Experimental evaluations show quality improvement compared with existing methods.

In order to study the earthquake recurrence and the characteristics of earthquake series, rupture tests of rock samples and plexiglass samples were made. On rock samples, a number of acoustic emission (AE) and strain measuring points were deployed; the load was one side direct shear. The variation characteristics of AE and strain at different detecting points around the extra large fracture were observed and studied. On plexiglass samples, a series of inclined cracks were prefabricated by a small-scale compressive testing machine. The samples were then loaded on a shockproof platen, when the samples were loaded, the stress intensity factor (SIF) was determined by the laser interferometric technique and shadow optical method of caustics. The fracture conditions such as material toughness around the extra large fracture were also studied. From those experimental results and the theory of fracture mechanics, the earthquake recurrence period and the trend of post-seismic development were studied.

In situ densification is a popular technique to protect shallow foundations from the effects of earthquake-induced liquefaction, current design being based on semiempirical rules. Poor understanding of the mechanisms governing the performance of soil-structure systems during and after earthquakes inhibits the use of narrow densified zones, which could contribute to optimise the use of densification if the increase in post-earthquake settlement is restrained. Therefore this paper investigates the long-term behaviour of a footing built on densified ground and surrounded by liquefiable ground, centrifuge experiments being used to identify the mechanisms occurring in the ground during and after a seismic simulation. The differential excess pore pressure generated in the ground during the shaking and the processes of vertical stress concentration and subsequent redistribution observed under the footing dominate the system behaviour. The results enlighten the complex mechanisms determining the post-earthquake settlement when densification is carried out to mitigate liquefaction effects. The improvement in performance resulting from widening the zone of densification is rationally explained which encourages the development of new design concepts that may enhance the future use of densification as a liquefaction resistance measure. © 2007 Thomas Telford Ltd.
