A seleção de práticas culturais tem sido objeto de interesse crescente na Análise do Comportamento, principalmente após a formulação do conceito de metacontingências por S. Glenn. Uma temática abordada tem sido as relações entre o comportamento governado por regras e a transmissão de práticas culturais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos de instruções verbais sobre a transmissão de uma prática de escolha em pequenos grupos. Quarenta e três alunos de graduação da UFPA participaram do estudo, distribuídos em 4 grupos. Os participantes deveriam resolver coletivamente (grupos de 3) um problema em uma condição em que havia dois tipos possíveis de ganhos: um mais vantajoso a longo prazo (escolhas de linhas pretas) e um menos vantajoso (escolha de linhas brancas). A cada 12 minutos um participante deixava o grupo e um novo participante passava a integrá-lo, cabendo aos participantes mais antigos instruir os novos na atividade. Em alguns dos grupos, participantes denominados de confederados foram instruídos a ensinar de forma errada a atividade aos participantes, induzindo o grupo a escolher as linhas brancas, levando a um resultado menos vantajoso. Os confederados instruíam os participantes com duas categorias de instruções: falsas descritivas e prescritivas. Com a continuidade do ciclo de mudanças de participantes, os confederados foram dando lugar a participantes ingênuos ou experientes na atividade. Os resultados obtidos indicam que quando os confederados participaram de grupos constituídos por participantes ingênuos, predominaram escolhas menos vantajosas para o grupo, sendo que no Grupo 2 o padrão instruído pelos confederados foi mantido por uma geração adicional e no Grupo 4 foi mantido por duas gerações adicionais. Quando os confederados integraram grupos com participantes previamente expostos à tarefa (Grupos 1 e 3), ambos os grupos voltaram a responder de acordo com padrão estabelecido em uma sessão de linha de base (aproximadamente 80% de escolhas pretas no Grupo 1 e 60% no Grupo 3). Quanto ao tipo de instrução empregada pelos confederados, quando os participantes foram instruídos com a instrução falsa descritiva, o padrão de escolha estabelecido pelos confederados se manteve por menos tempo do que quando os participantes foram instruídos com as instruções prescritivas. Conclui-se que a experiência prévia em uma atividade capacita o grupo a sofrer menos efeitos da manipulação verbal que leva a práticas de escolhas menos vantajosas, e que instruções que não descrevem relações de contingência entre eventos são menos eficientes em produzir um controle de práticas de escolhas por meio de instruções verbais.

No levante paulista de 1932, o jornal O Estado de S. Paulo ocupou papel de destaque ao noticiar, com eloqüência, as informações da guerra que lhe convinha e, principalmente, participar das articulações que redundariam no entrincheiramento. Entretanto, a atuação do periódico na conjuntura não se resume à manipulação da notícia ou deriva meramente do projeto político de seus diretores. Na “Revolução Constitucionalista” O Estado de S. Paulo agiu como o porta-voz da elite paulista. Neste texto, portanto, pretendo problematizar a participação do jornal O Estado de S. Paulo no levante de 1932, enfatizando sua condição de fonte e objeto para a produção do conhecimento histórico.

Although many studies have shown that soil solution chemistry can be a reliable indicator of biogeochemical cycling in forest ecosystems, the effects of litter manipulations on the fluxes of dissolved elements in gravitational soil solutions have rarely been investigated. We estimated the fluxes of NH4-N, NO3-N, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Cl, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) over the first two years after re-planting Eucalyptus trees in the coastal area of Congo. Two treatments were replicated in two blocks after clear-cutting 7-year-old stands: in treatment R, all the litter above the mineral soil was removed before planting, and in a double slash (DS) treatment, the amount of harvest residues was doubled. The soil solutions were sampled down to a depth of 4 m and the water fluxes were estimated using the Hydrus 1D model parameterized from soil moisture measurements in 4 plots. Isotopic and spectroscopic analytical techniques were used to assess the changes in dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties throughout the transfer in the soil. The first year after planting, the fluxes of NH4-N, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Cl and DOC in the topsoil of the DS treatment were 2-5 times higher than in R, which showed that litter was a major source of dissolved nutrients. Nutrient fluxes in gravitational solutions decreased sharply in the second year after planting, irrespective of the soil depth, as a result of intense nutrient uptake by Eucalyptus trees. Losses of dissolved nutrients were noticeably low in these Eucalyptus plantations despite a low cation exchange capacity, a coarse soil texture and large amounts of harvest residues left on-site at the clear cut in the DS treatment. All together, these results clarified the strong effect of litter manipulation observed on eucalypt growth in Congolese sandy soils. DOM fluxes, as well as changes in delta C-13, C:N and aromaticity of DOM throughout the soil profile showed that the organic compounds produced in the litter layer were mainly consumed by microorganisms or retained in the topsoil. Below a depth of 15 cm, most of the DOC and the DON originated from the first 2 cm of the soil and the exchanges between soil solutions and soil organic matter were low. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Developmental Dyslexia negatively affects children's reading and writing ability and, in most cases, performance in sensorimotor tasks. These deficits have been associated with structural and functional alterations in the cerebellum and the posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Both neural structures are active during visually guided force control and in the coordination of load force (LF) and grip force (GF) during manipulation tasks. Surprisingly, both phenomena have not been investigated in dyslexic children. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare dyslexic and non-dyslexic children regarding their visuomotor processing ability and GF-LF coordination during a static manipulation task. Thirteen dyslexic (8-14YO) and 13 age- and sex-matched non-dyslexic (control) children participated in the study. They were asked to grasp a fixed instrumented handle using the tip of all digits and pull the handle upward exerting isometric force to match a ramp-and-hold force profile displayed in a computer monitor. Task performance (i.e., visuomotor coordination) was assessed by RMSE calculated in both ramp and hold phases. GF-LF coordination was assessed by the ratio between GF and LF (GF/LF) calculated at both phases and the maximum value of a cross-correlation function (r(max)) and its respective time lag calculated at ramp phase. The results revealed that the RMSE at both phases was larger in dyslexic than in control children. However, we found that GF/LF, rmax, and time lags were similar between groups. Those findings indicate that dyslexic children have a mild deficit in visuomotor processing but preserved GF-LF coordination. Altogether, these findings suggested that dyslexic children could present mild structural and functional alterations in specific PPC or cerebellum areas that are directly related to visuomotor processing. In this letter, a semiautomatic method for road extraction in object space is proposed that combines a stereoscopic pair of low-resolution aerial images with a digital terrain model (DTM) structured as a triangulated irregular network (TIN). First, we formulate an objective function in the object space to allow the modeling of roads in 3-D. In this model, the TIN-based DTM allows the search for the optimal polyline to be restricted along a narrow band that is overlaid upon it. Finally, the optimal polyline for each road is obtained by optimizing the objective function using the dynamic programming optimization algorithm. A few seed points need to be supplied by an operator. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, a set of experiments was designed using two stereoscopic pairs of low-resolution aerial images and a TIN-based DTM with an average resolution of 1 m. The experimental results showed that the proposed method worked properly, even when faced with anomalies along roads, such as obstructions caused by shadows and trees.

The understanding of fish immune system structure and function is essential for the development of new technologies and products to improve productivity. This is the first review on immune system of fish with Brazilian studies. Aquaculture in Brazil has shown massive growth in recent years due to methods of culture intensification. However, these procedures led to disease outbreaks, as well as the chemotherapy and the misuse of antibiotics. A viable alternative to avoid the use of chemicals and prevent economic losses is the administration of immunostimulants and prebiotcs, which act by increasing the innate immune system. In Brazil there is a lack of studies on fish immune system, except by some groups that have studied the effects of the immunostimulants administration in various species.

Broilers are known as an efficient source of lean meat. Genetic selection resulted in broiler strains with large body size and fast growth, but a concomitant increase in fat deposition also occurred. Other than reducing nutrient intake, there is a lack of alternative methods to control body fat composition of broilers. The present study assessed whether incubation temperature (machine temperatures: 36ºC, 37.5ºC, and 39ºC; eggshell temperatures: 37.4 ± 0.08°C, 37.8 ± 0.15ºC, and 38.8 ± 0.33°C, respectively.) from d 13 affects broiler hatchling fat deposition. We analyzed adipocyte hypertrophy and proliferation in 3 body regions; weight and chemical composition of yolk-free chicks and yolk sacs; and serum lipid profile. Increased incubation temperature reduced abdominal and cervical adipocyte size. Independently of temperature, cervical adipocytes were smaller and showed higher proliferation than adipocytes in the abdominal and thigh regions. Smaller cervical adipocytes were observed in birds from eggs incubated at 36ºC and 39ºC. With regard to weight and composition of chicks, ash content as a percentage of dry matter was the only variable affected by temperature; it was higher in chicks from eggs incubated at 36ºC than at 39ºC and showed no significant difference between chicks incubated at 39ºC and 37.5ºC. Absolute and relative weights of yolk sacs were higher from eggs incubated at 39ºC than at 36ºC, and these two treatments did not differ from the 37.5ºC control. Absolute measures of yolk sac lipids, moisture, dry matter, and crude protein content were lower in chicks from eggs incubated at 36ºC, and no significant differences were found for these variables between chicks from eggs incubated at 37.5ºC and 39ºC. Hatchlings from eggs incubated at 36°C had significantly higher cholesterol levels than chicks incubated at the other 2 temperatures, but no additional effects on blood lipids were detected. Incubation temperature manipulation during fetal development altered cervical and abdominal adipocyte size in broiler hatchlings and could become a tool in hatcheries to manipulate chick quality, although further studies are needed to evaluate its long-term effects.
