In September-October 1998, during Cruise 14 of R/V Akademik Fedorov to the Barents Sea, in the region of 82° N between the Spitsbergen and Novaya Zemlya archipelagos samples of snow and ice were collected within four polygons. By means of atomic absorption with an electothermal atomizer (onboard the ship) in filtered (dissolved form) and unfiltered (sum of dissolved and particulate forms) samples of snow melt and ice melt concentrations of Fe, Mn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Co, Pb, and Cd were determined in order to estimate level of potential contamination of snow and ice with these metals. Excluding data on Ni, Cd (and probably Cu) in ice that were regarded to be unsatisfactory because of probable contamination of the ice samples during drilling concentrations of all the elements in snow and ice of the northern part of the Barents Sea appeared to be close to their background values or below. An attempt to identify the main sources of metal supply to snow from the atmosphere by comparison of ratios of metal particulate form to total content in snow of the Barents Sea and the same ratios in snow samples from clean regions of Finland and from contaminated areas of the Kola Peninsula showed that aerosols in the area of the expedition were supplied into the Barents Sea atmosphere from different sources, both natural and anthropogenic.

This paper analyzes the hydrological processes and the impact of soil properties and land use on these processes in tropical headwater catchment in the sub-humid part of Benin (West-Africa), the Aguima catchment. The presented study is integrated in the GLOWA IMPETUS project, which investigates the effects of global change on the water cycle and water availability on a regional scale in Morocco and Benin. The lack of field investigations concerning soil and surface hydrology in the Benin research area necessitates detailed field measurements including measurements of discharge, soil water dynamics, soil physical properties etc. on the local scale in order to understand the dominant runoff generation processes and its influencing factors. This is a pre-requisite to be able to forecast the effects which global change has on hydrological processes and water availability in the region. The paper gives an overview over the hydrologic measuring concept of the IMPETUS-Benin project focusing on measurements concerning the soil saturated conductivity ksat and discharge behaviour of two different sub-catchment of the Aguima catchment. The results of ksat measurements revealed that interflow is the dominant runoff process on the hillslopes of the investigated catchment. Concerning the impact of land use on the hydrological processes infiltration experiments showed that infiltration rates were reduced on cultivated land compared to natural land cover. This results in significant differences in runoff behaviour and runoff ratios while comparing natural and agricultural used catchments.

We quantified postdepositional losses of methane sulfonate (MSA-), nitrate, and chloride at the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) drilling site in Dronning Maud Land (DML) (75°S, 0°E). Analyses of four intermediate deep firn cores and 13 snow pits were considered. We found that about 26 ± 13% of the once deposited nitrate and typically 51 ± 20% of MSA- were lost, while for chloride, no significant depletion could be observed in firn older than one year. Assuming a first order exponential decay rate, the characteristic e-folding time for MSA- is 6.4 ± 3 years and 19 ± 6 years for nitrate. It turns out that for nitrate and MSA- the typical mean concentrations representative for the last 100 years were reached after 5.4 and 6.5 years, respectively, indicating that beneath a depth of around 1.2-1.4 m postdepositional losses can be neglected. In the area of investigation, only MSA- concentrations and postdepositional losses showed a distinct dependence on snow accumulation rate. Consequently, MSA- concentrations archived at this site should be significantly dependent on the variability of annual snow accumulation, and we recommend a corresponding correction. With a simple approach, we estimated the partial pressure of the free acids MSA, HNO3, and HCl on the basis of Henry's law assuming that ionic impurities of the bulk ice matrix are localized in a quasi-brine layer (QBL). In contrast to measurements, this approach predicts a nearly complete loss of MSA-, NO3 - , and Cl-.

The SHELF 1997 dataset contains zooplankton data collected in April, May and June 1997 5 transect in front of the Romanian littoral . Zooplankton sampling was undertaken using a Juday closing net in the 0-10, 10-25, and 25-50m layer (depending also on the water masses). The dataset includes samples analysed for mesozooplankton species composition and abundance. Sampling volume was estimated by multiplying the mouth area with the wire length. Taxon-specific mesozooplankton abundance was count under microscope. Total abundance is the sum of the counted individuals. Total biomass Fodder, Rotifera , Ctenophora and Noctiluca was estimated using a tabel with wet weight for each species an stage.

A diatom-based sea-ice concentration (SIC) transfer function is developed using 72 surface samples from west of Greenland and around Iceland, and through comparison with the associated modern SIC. Canonical correspondence analysis on surface sediment diatoms and monthly average of SIC reveals that April SIC is the most important environmental factor controlling the distribution of diatoms in the area, and permits the development of a diatom-based SIC transfer function. The consistency between reconstructed SIC based on diatoms from West Greenland and the instrumental and documentary data during the last ~75 years demonstrates that the diatom-based SIC reconstruction is reliable for studying the palaeoceanography off West Greenland. Relatively warm conditions with strong influence of the Irminger Current (IC) are indicated for the early part of the record (~5000-3860 cal. yr BP), corresponding in time to the latest part of the Holocene Thermal Maximum. The April SIC oscillated around the mean value between 3860 and 1510 cal. yr BP and was above mean afterwards, particularly during the time interval 1510-1120 cal. yr BP and after 650 cal. yr BP, indicating more extensive sea-ice cover in Disko Bugt. A high degree of consistency between the reconstructed April SIC and changes in the diatom species suggests that the sea-ice condition in Disko Bugt is strongly influenced by variations in the relative strength of two components of the West Greenland Current, i.e. the cold East Greenland Current and the relatively warm IC.

Distribution of Cd and Pb in sea ice and in under-ice water of the Amur Bay at the end of February 1998 is considered. The metals were determined by technique of inversion voltammetry. Contribution of Cd and Pb from atmospheric precipitation and from under-ice water to sea ice examined is discussed. On the basis of analysis of vertical distribution in ice, atmospheric fluxes supplying metals to the aquatic area of the bay are estimated at 100 and 2000 µg/m**2/year for Cd and Pb, respectively. Concentrations of Cd and Pb found in middle and lower parts of ice cores allow to suggest that their accumulation relative to main ions of seawater occurs in the ice. Estimated enrichment factors of Cd and Pb in sea ice relative to seawate are ~9 and ~5. A possible mechanism of relative metal accumulation in sea ice is considered.

We have measured the 3He/3He and 3He/20 Ne ratios of thirty-nine pore water and gas samples in deep-sea sediments collected at twelve sites on the Pacific Ocean bottom during the cruises of Deep Sea Drilling Project Legs 87, 89, 90 and 92. The 3He/4He and 4He/20Ne ratios vary from 0.000000215 to 0.00000165 and from 0.29 to 20, respectively. He in the sample is composed of four components: (1) atmospheric He dissolved in seawater; (2) atmospheric He with mantle-derived He in Pacific bottom water; (3) in situ radiogenic He in the sediment; and (4) crustal He in the basement rock. Assuming that the 20Ne contents are constant with the value of seawater, the depth variations in the 4He/20Ne ratios at five Sites, 583D, 594, 597A, 598A and 504B, may provide useful information on 4He flux at the ocean bottom. The estimated 4He fluxes vary from 2000 to 40000 atoms cm**-2 s**-1 and are one to three orders of magnitude less than those calculated from the excess He in deep ocean water. An overall similarity between the geographical distribution of the 3He/4He ratios and heat flow data is found in the study area, between the East Pacific Rise across the Pacific Ocean and the Japanese Islands. The tendency is well explained by a conventional sea-floor spreading model.

Transition of Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb into solution is studied for experimental suspensions of coastal marine sediments with different degrees of pollution from the Amur Bay (Sea of Japan) over 30-70 days. Concentrations of dissolved metals were measured by a voltammetry method. Transition of Zn and Cd into solution was shown to be linearly dependent on initial pollution of sediments with these metals. Cadmium mobilization is due to gradual degradation of organic matter from sediments. Under degradation processes Zn quickly goes into solution during sedimentation and from silts, while in case of polluted sediments it is slowly mobilized during oxidation of sulfides. Behavior of Cu is complex because of binding of mobilized metal by dissolved organic compounds. Transition of lead into solution is negligible. Calculation of potential transition of metals from sediments into water on the basis of experimental data and its comparison with downward sedimentary flux showed that in the studied area secondary pollution of water by aerobic degradation of sediments is possible only for Cd.

Phytoplankton community was studied in the Bering Strait and over the shelf, continental slope, and deep-water zones of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas in the middle of the vegetative season (July-August 2003). Its structure was analyzed in relation to ice conditions and seasonal patterns of water warming, stratification, and nutrient concentrations. Overall variations in phytoplankton abundance from 200 to 6000000 cells/l and biomass from 0.1 to 444.1 µg C/l.were estimated. The bulk of phytoplankton cells concentrated in the seasonal picnocline at depths 10-25 m. The highest values of cell abundance and biomass were recorded in regions influenced by inflow of Bering Sea waters or characterized by intense hydrodynamics, such as the Bering Strait, Barrow Canyon, and the outer shelf and slope of the Chukchi Sea. In the middle of the vegetative season, phytoplankton in the study region of the Western Arctic proved to comprise three successional (seasonal) assemblages: early spring, late spring, and summer assemblages. Their spatial distribution was dependent mainly on local features of hydrological and nutrient regimes rather than on general latitudinal trends of seasonal succession characteristic of arctic ecosystems.
