In e+e− event shapes studies at LEP, two different measurements were sometimes performed: a “calorimetric” measurement using both charged and neutral particles and a “track-based” measurement using just charged particles. Whereas calorimetric measurements are infrared and collinear safe, and therefore calculable in perturbative QCD, track-based measurements necessarily depend on nonperturbative hadronization effects. On the other hand, track-based measurements typically have smaller experimental uncertainties. In this paper, we present the first calculation of the event shape “track thrust” and compare to measurements performed at ALEPH and DELPHI. This calculation is made possible through the recently developed formalism of track functions, which are nonperturbative objects describing how energetic partons fragment into charged hadrons. By incorporating track functions into soft-collinear effective theory, we calculate the distribution for track thrust with next-to-leading logarithmic resummation. Due to a partial cancellation between nonperturbative parameters, the distributions for calorimeter thrust and track thrust are remarkably similar, a feature also seen in LEP data.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential macronutrient for all living organisms. Phosphorus is often present in nature as the soluble phosphate ion PO43– and has biological, terrestrial, and marine emission sources. Thus PO43– detected in ice cores has the potential to be an important tracer for biological activity in the past. In this study a continuous and highly sensitive absorption method for detection of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in ice cores has been developed using a molybdate reagent and a 2-m liquid waveguide capillary cell (LWCC). DRP is the soluble form of the nutrient phosphorus, which reacts with molybdate. The method was optimized to meet the low concentrations of DRP in Greenland ice, with a depth resolution of approximately 2 cm and an analytical uncertainty of 1.1 nM (0.1 ppb) PO43–. The method has been applied to segments of a shallow firn core from Northeast Greenland, indicating a mean concentration level of 2.74 nM (0.26 ppb) PO43– for the period 1930–2005 with a standard deviation of 1.37 nM (0.13 ppb) PO43– and values reaching as high as 10.52 nM (1 ppb) PO43–. Similar levels were detected for the period 1771–1823. Based on impurity abundances, dust and biogenic particles were found to be the most likely sources of DRP deposited in Northeast Greenland.

When an ice core sample is analysed for its aeolian dust content, it is melted and the particles detected are suspended in water. Consequently, dust measurement techniques employed in the ice core community differ from those used for in-situ studies of airborne dust. Methods commonly used to classify insolubles suspended in a liquid are either based on the particles’ interaction with light or on the detection of resistive pulses by means of Coulter counting. Data sets obtained with Coulter counters are widely accepted as references and other techniques are judged against their ability to reproduce these. Unfortunately, optically acquired ice core dust records were found to differ. By analyzing two sections of the NEEM dust record, two different evaluation procedures are discussed before a third protocol is proposed. It is found that relative changes in the archived dust load can be reproduced, while the simultaneous attainment of absolute concentrations or changes in the grain size frequency histograms in high resolution remains difficult.

We present the first results of searches for axions and axionlike particles with the XENON100 experiment. The axion-electron coupling constant, g Ae , has been probed by exploiting the axioelectric effect in liquid xenon. A profile likelihood analysis of 224.6 live days × 34-kg exposure has shown no evidence for a signal. By rejecting g Ae larger than 7.7×10 −12 (90% C.L.) in the solar axion search, we set the best limit to date on this coupling. In the frame of the DFSZ and KSVZ models, we exclude QCD axions heavier than 0.3 and 80  eV/c 2 , respectively. For axionlike particles, under the assumption that they constitute the whole abundance of dark matter in our galaxy, we constrain g Ae to be lower than 1×10 −12 (90% C.L.) for masses between 5 and 10  keV/c 2 .

We model Callisto's exosphere based on its ice as well as non-ice surface via the use of a Monte-Carlo exosphere model. For the ice component we implement two putative compositions that have been computed from two possible extreme formation scenarios of the satellite. One composition represents the oxidizing state and is based on the assumption that the building blocks of Callisto were formed in the protosolar nebula and the other represents the reducing state of the gas, based on the assumption that the satellite accreted from solids condensed in the jovian sub-nebula. For the non-ice component we implemented the compositions of typical CI as well as L type chondrites. Both chondrite types have been suggested to represent Callisto's non-ice composition best. As release processes we consider surface sublimation, ion sputtering and photon-stimulated desorption. Particles are followed on their individual trajectories until they either escape Callisto's gravitational attraction, return to the surface, are ionized, or are fragmented. Our density profiles show that whereas the sublimated species dominate close to the surface on the sun-lit side, their density profiles (with the exception of H and H-2) decrease much more rapidly than the sputtered particles. The Neutral gas and Ion Mass (NIM) spectrometer, which is part of the Particle Environment Package (PEP), will investigate Callisto's exosphere during the JUICE mission. Our simulations show that NIM will be able to detect sublimated and sputtered particles from both the ice and non-ice surface. NIM's measured chemical composition will allow us to distinguish between different formation scenarios. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Many lines of clinical and experimental evidence indicate a viral role in carcinogenesis (1-6). Our access to patient plasma, serum, and tissue samples from invasive breast cancer (N=19), ductal carcinoma in situ (N=13), malignant ovarian cancer (N=12), and benign ovarian tumors (N=9), via IRB-approved and informed consent protocols through M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, as well as normal donor plasmas purchased from Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center (N=6), has allowed us to survey primary patient blood and tissue samples, healthy donor blood from the general population, as well as commercially available human cell lines for the presence of human endogenous retrovirus K (HERV-K) Env viral RNA (vRNA), protein, and viral particles. We hypothesize that HERV-K proteins are tumor-associated antigens and as such can be profiled and targeted in patients for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. To test this hypothesis, we employed isopycnic ultracentrifugation, a microplate-based reverse transcriptase enzyme activity assay, reverse transcription – polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), cDNA sequencing, SDS-PAGE and western blotting, immunofluorescent staining, confocal microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy to evaluate v HERV-K activation in cancer. Data from large numbers of patients tested by reverse transcriptase activity assay were analyzed statistically by t-test to determine the potential use of this assay as a diagnostic tool for cancer. Significant reverse transcriptase enzyme activity was detected in 75% of ovarian cancer patients, 53.8% of ductal carcinoma in situ patient, and 42.1% of invasive breast cancer patient samples. Only 11.1% of benign ovarian patient and 16.7% of normal donor samples tested positive. HERV-K Env vRNA, or Env SU were detected in the majority of cancer types screened, as demonstrated by the results shown herein, and were largely absent in normal controls. These findings support our hypothesis that the presence of HERV-K in patient blood circulation is an indicator of cancer or pre-malignancy in vivo, that the presence of HERV-K Env on tumor cell surfaces is indicative of malignant phenotype, and that HERV-K Env is a tumor-associated antigen useful not only as a diagnostic screening tool to predict patient disease status, but also as an exploitable therapeutic target for various novel antibody-based immunotherapies.

A number of parameters of biogeochemical interest were monitored along a north-southerly transect (S 43-S 63°) in the Atlantic Sector of the Southern Ocean from the 8th to the 20th of December 1997. Changes in total dissolved inorganic carbon (CT) and total alkalinity (AT) were mostly dependent on temperature and salinity until the ice edge was reached. After this point only a weak correlation was seen between these. Highest mean values of CT and AT were observed in the Winter Ice Edge (WIE) (2195 and 2319 µmol/kg, respectively). Lowest mean AT (2277 µmol/kg) was observed in the Sub-Antarctic Front (SAF), whereas lowest mean CT concentration (2068 µmol/kg) was associated with the Sub-Tropical Front (STF). The pH in situ varied between 8.060 and 8.156 where the highest values were observed in the southern part of the Antarctic Polar Front (APF) and in the Summer Ice Edge (SIE) Region . These peaks were associated with areas of high chlorophyll a (chl a) and tribromomethane values. In the other areas the pH in situ was mainly dependent on hydrography. Bacterial abundance decreased more than one order of magnitude when going from north to south. The decrease appeared to be strongly related to water temperature and there were no elevated abundances at frontal zones. Microphytoplankton dominated in the SAF and APF, whereas the nano- and picoplankton dominated outside these regions. Volatile halogenated compounds were found to vary both with regions, and with daylight. For the iodinated compounds, the highest concentrations were found north of the STF. Brominated hydrocarbons had high concentrations in the STF, but elevated concentrations were also found in the APF and SIE regions. No obvious correlation could be found between the occurrence of individual halocarbons and chl a. On some occasions trichloroethene and tribromomethane related to the presence of nano- and microplankton, respectively.

This work was based on a study of the upper layer of recent carbonate bottom sediments of the Atlantic Ocean. Biogenic carbonate of recent sediments is represented by metastable and stable minerals. In the ocean metastable phases can exist indefinitely long, but the structure of polymorphism determines inevitability of transformation of metastable phases into stable ones. This transformation occurs in the solid phase. In the absence of a critical point between the two phases of the transition process is not available for study by microscopic methods. It is estimated indirectly by studying the nature and extent of changes in mineral and chemical compositions. With aging of sediments their mineral composition alters in direction of increasing contents of resistant minerals. Fine grained sediments and fractions are subject to more intensive effects of early diagenesis processes, rather than coarse ones; this is reflected in their mineral composition. Regularities of distribution of carbonate minerals in size fractions consistent with the direction of polymorphic transformations in calcium carbonate. Such transformations can occur in a particular dimension of grains. Concrete grain size depends on environmental conditions. This situation explains presence of metastable biogenic carbonates at different depths of the ocean and suggests presence of diagenetic calcite in sediments occurring below expected for each case depth of the transition.

Because of a close relationship between detrital flux variations and magnetic susceptibility (MS) flux (MS cm**3 of bulk sediment multiplied by the linear sedimentation rate) variations in the southeast Indian basin of the southern ocean, MS flux profiles have been used to examine the spatial and temporal detrital flux changes in this basin during the last climatic cycle. Results indicate a general increase in detrital material input during the coldest periods, suggesting a widespread phenomenon, at least on the basin scale. Mineralogical data, geochemical data, and 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios have been used to determine the origin and transport mechanisms responsible for increased detrital flux during glacial periods. Mineralogical and geochemical data show that these glacial 'highs' are due to increases in both Kerguelen-Crozet volcanic and Antarctic detrital inputs. The 87Sr/86Sr isotopic composition of the >45-µm fraction indicates that the Kerguelen-Crozet province contributes to at least 50% of the coarse particule input to the west. This contribution decreases eastward to reach less than 10%. These tracers clearly indicate that the Crozet-Kerguelen province was a major source region of detrital in the western part of the basin during glacial times. In contrast, material of Antarctic origin is well represented in the whole basin (fine and coarse fractions). Because of the minor amount of coarse particles in the sediments, volcanic particles from Kerguelen and crustal particles from Antarctica have most probably been transported by the Antarctic bottom water current and/or the Circumpolar deepwater current during glacial periods as is the case today. Nevertheless, the presence of coarse particles even in low amount suggests also a transport by ice rafting (sea-ice and icebergs), originated from both Kerguelen and Antarctic sources. However, the relative importance of both hydrographic and ice-rafting modes of transport cannot be identified accurately with our data. During low sea level stands (glacial maximum periods), increasing instability and erosion of the continental platform and shallow plateaus could have resulted in a more efficient transfer of crustal and volcano-detrital material to the Southeast Indian basin. At the same time, extension of the grounded ice shelves over the continental margins and increase in the erosion rate of the Antarctic ice sheet could have induced a greater input of ice rafted detritus (IRD) to southern ocean basins. Enhancement of the circumpolar deepwater current strength might have also carried a more important flux of detrital material from Kerguelen. However, an increase in the bottom water flow is not necessarily required.

Size-fractionated chlorophyll a and photosynthetic carbon incorporation, microbial oxygen production and respiration and particulate vertical flux were measured in January 1996 at three regions, characterized by distinct hydrographic fields and planktonic communities, of the Antarctic Peninsula: (1) a diatom-Phaeocystis sp., dominated community associated with the relatively stratified waters of the Gerlache Strait, (2) a nanoplankton-Cryptomonas sp. dominated assemblage at the Gerlache-Bransfield confluence; and (3) a nano- and picoplankton community in mixed waters of the Bransfield Strait. Despite the marked differences in both community structure and total phytoplankton biomass and primary production, and against predictions from models about trophic control of C export, the lowest respiration rates were measured at Bransfield (pico- and nanoplankton), and no difference was observed between the Gerlache (large diatoms) and Bransfield stations in relative vertical particle flux (6.4 vs. 5.1 % of suspended C; 14.9 vs. 10.4 % of net community production, respectively). Growth and loss rates of the phytoplankton population studied for each community indicate that microbial populations can be explained by in situ growth, but spatial (diatom-Phaeocystis sp., bloom) and temporal (diatom-Phaeocystis sp. bloom and nanoplankton communities) scales of study were shown to be insufficient for addressing the coupling between primary production and biogenic carbon export, especially after the appreciation of the accumulation of dissolved organic carbon in the water column. This would explain the unexpected results and highlights the necessity of including the mechanisms controlling accumulation and consumption of dissolved organic matter into conceptual models about the trophic control of C export.

Glacially deformed pieces of wood, organic lake sediments and clasts of reworked peat have been collected in front of Alpine glaciers since AD 1990. The palaeoglaciological interpretation of these organic materials is related to earlier phases of glacier recession surpassing that of today's shrunken glaciers and to tree growth and peat accumulation in the valleys now occupied by the glaciers. Glacial transport of the material is indicated by wood anatomy, incorporated silt, sand and gravel particles, missing bark and deformed treerings. A total of 65 samples have been radiocarbon dated so far, and clusters of dates provide evidence of eight phases of glacier recession: 9910-9550, 9010-7980, 7250-6500, 6170-5950, 5290-3870, 3640-3360, 2740-2620 and 1530-1170 calibrated years BP. Allowing for the timelag between climatic fluctuations, glacier response and vegetation colonization, these recession phases may lag behind climatic changes by 100-200 years.

Examination of the geotechnical characteristics of Weddell Sea, Maud Rise, and South Orkney microcontinental margin sediments recovered during ODP Leg 113 reveals that the reduction in porosity (consolidation) of the siliciclastic, calcareous, and diatomaceous sediments is primarily a process governed by vertical stresses created by overburden. The initial porosity of the sediments in these areas is governed by the amount of diatoms present. The more diatoms, the higher the porosity. Surficial diatom-rich sediments are everywhere overconsolidated. This is attributed to the strong microfabric created by the diatoms, calcareous and clay particles. The deeper diatom-free sediments of Maud Rise range from slightly underconsolidated to normally consolidated. The silty clays and clays of the Weddell Sea and South Orkney margin are underconsolidated. The degree of underconsolidation of these sediments is similar to that determined in a number of different locations throughout the world's oceans. The very low permeability of the Weddell Sea and South Orkney margin sediments appears to account for this underconsolidation.

This paper outlines the problems found in the parallelization of SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) algorithms using Graphics Processing Units. Different results of some parallel GPU implementations in terms of the speed-up and the scalability compared to the CPU sequential codes are shown. The most problematic stage in the GPU-SPH algorithms is the one responsible for locating neighboring particles and building the vectors where this information is stored, since these specific algorithms raise many dificulties for a data-level parallelization. Because of the fact that the neighbor location using linked lists does not show enough data-level parallelism, two new approaches have been pro- posed to minimize bank conflicts in the writing and subsequent reading of the neighbor lists. The first strategy proposes an efficient coordination between CPU-GPU, using GPU algorithms for those stages that allow a straight forward parallelization, and sequential CPU algorithms for those instructions that involve some kind of vector reduction. This coordination provides a relatively orderly reading of the neighbor lists in the interactions stage, achieving a speed-up factor of x47 in this stage. However, since the construction of the neighbor lists is quite expensive, it is achieved an overall speed-up of x41. The second strategy seeks to maximize the use of the GPU in the neighbor's location process by executing a specific vector sorting algorithm that allows some data-level parallelism. Al- though this strategy has succeeded in improving the speed-up on the stage of neighboring location, the global speed-up on the interactions stage falls, due to inefficient reading of the neighbor vectors. Some changes to these strategies are proposed, aimed at maximizing the computational load of the GPU and using the GPU texture-units, in order to reach the maximum speed-up for such codes. Different practical applications have been added to the mentioned GPU codes. First, the classical dam-break problem is studied. Second, the wave impact of the sloshing fluid contained in LNG vessel tanks is also simulated as a practical example of particle methods

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to determine the distribution of size and number of nanometric particles that come from diesel engines by means of on-board equipment in extra-urban traffic. In order to do this, cutting-edge measuring equipment was used under average driving conditions in extra-urban traffic for more than 800 km along the Madrid-Badajoz-Madrid route using a typical vehicle from Spain's automotive population and innovative, groundbreaking registering methods for this type of emissions were used. All this paves the way for lines of research and development which should help understand, measure and characterize the behavior of such particles, as well as their impact in the quality of life of the general population. The study makes two important contributions to the field. First, it makes it possible to register emissions under transient conditions, which are characteristic to real traffic. Secondly, it provides a means to keep the measuring conditions under control and prevents the random formation of particles of volatile origin through the built-in adjustment system of the exhaust gas sample. As a result, an abundant and reliable sample was gathered, which enabled the building of mathematical models to estimate the emission of nanometric, ultrafine, fine and total particles on volumetric, spatial and temporal bases as a function of the orographic outline of the road within a ±5.0% range. These emission estimating models lower both the experimentation costs and the required equipment's complexity, and they provided the basis for the development of a first software application version that estimates the particles emitted from diesel engines under extra-urban traffic conditions (Partículas Emitidas por Motores Diésel, PEMDI).
