Asymmetric catalysis is of paramount importance in organic synthesis and, in current practice, is achieved by means of homogeneous catalysts. The ability to catalyze such reactions heterogeneously would have a major impact both in the research laboratory and in the production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals, yet heterogeneous asymmetric hydrogenation of C═C bonds remains hardly explored. Very recently, we demonstrated how chiral ligands that anchor robustly to the surface of Pd nanoparticles promote asymmetric catalytic hydrogenation: ligand rigidity and stereochemistry emerged as key factors. Here, we address a complementary question: how does the enone reactant adsorb on the metal surface, and what implications does this have for the enantiodifferentiating interaction with the surface-tethered chiral modifiers? A reaction model is proposed, which correctly predicts the identity of the enantiomer experimentally observed in excess.

Aircraft OH and HO2 measurements made over West Africa during the AMMA field campaign in summer 2006 have been investigated using a box model constrained to observations of long-lived species and physical parameters. "Good" agreement was found for HO2 (modelled to observed gradient of 1.23 ± 0.11). However, the model significantly overpredicts OH concentrations. The reasons for this are not clear, but may reflect instrumental instabilities affecting the OH measurements. Within the model, HOx concentrations in West Africa are controlled by relatively simple photochemistry, with production dominated by ozone photolysis and reaction of O(1D) with water vapour, and loss processes dominated by HO2 + HO2 and HO2 + RO2. Isoprene chemistry was found to influence forested regions. In contrast to several recent field studies in very low NOx and high isoprene environments, we do not observe any dependence of model success for HO2 on isoprene and attribute this to efficient recycling of HOx through RO2 + NO reactions under the moderate NOx concentrations (5–300 ppt NO in the boundary layer, median 76 ppt) encountered during AMMA. This suggests that some of the problems with understanding the impact of isoprene on atmospheric composition may be limited to the extreme low range of NOx concentrations.

WO3-based materials as sensors for the monitor of environmental gases such as NO2 (NO + NO2) have been rapidly developed for various potential applications (stationary and mobile uses). It has been reported that these materials are highly sensitive to NOx with the sensitivity further enhanced by adding precious group metals (PGM such as Pt, Pd, Au, etc.). However, there has been limited work in revealing the sensing mechanism for these gases over the WO3-based sensors. In particular, the role of promoter is not yet clear though speculations on their catalytic, electronic and structural effects have been made in the past. In parallel to these PGM promoters here we report, for the first time, that Ag promotion can also enhance WO3 sensitivity significantly. In addition, this promotion decreases the optimum sensor temperature of 300 degreesC for Most WO3-based sensors, to below 200 degreesC. Characterizations (XRD, TEM, and impedance measurement) reveal that there is no significant bulk structure change nor particle size alteration in the WO3 phases during the NO exposure. However, it is found that the Ag doping creates a high concentration of oxygen vacancies in form of coordinated crystallographic shear (CS) planes onto the underneath WO3. It is thus proposed that the Ag particle facilitates the oxidative conversion of NO to NO2 followed by a subsequent NO2 adsorption on the defective WO, sites created at the Ag-WO3 interface; hence, accounting for the high molecular sensitivity. The coadsorption of water and preadsorbed oxygen on Ru{0001) was studied by synchrotron-based high-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A dramatic change was observed in the interaction of water with oxygen between low and high oxygen precoverages. Low oxygen coverages below 0.18 ML induce partial dissociation, which leads to an adsorbed layer of H2O and OH. Around half the oxygen atoms take part in this reaction. All OH recombines upon heating to 200 K and desorbs together with H2O. Oxygen coverages between 0.20 and 0.50 ML inhibit dissociation, instead a highly stable intact water species is observed, which desorbs at 220 K. This species is significantly more stable than intact water on the clean surface. The stabilization is most likely due to the formation of hydrogen bonds with neighboring oxygen atoms. For intermediate oxygen coverages around 0.18 ML, the dissociation behavior depends on the preparation conditions, which points toward possible mechanisms and pathways for partial dissociation of water on Ru{0001}.

The adsorption of alanine on Cu {110} was studied by a combination of near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT). Large chemical shifts in the C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s XP spectra were found between the alanine multilayer and the chemisorbed and pseudo-(3 x 2) alaninate layers. From C, N, and O K-shell NEXAFS spectra the tilt angles of the carboxylate group (approximate to 26 degrees in plane with respect to [1 (1) over bar0] and approximate to 45 degrees out of plane) and the C-N bond angle with respect to [1 (1) over bar0] could be determined for the pseudo-(3 x 2) overlayer. Using this information three adsorption geometries could be eliminated from five p(3 x 2) structures which lead to almost identical heats of adsorption in the DFT calculations between 1.40 and 1.47 eV/molecule. Due to the small energy difference between the remaining two structures it is not unlikely that these coexist on the surface at room temperature. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A quantitative low energy electron diffraction (LEED) analysis has been performed for the p(2 x 2)-S and c(2 x 2)-S surface structures formed by exposing the (1 x 1) phase of Ir{100} to H2S at 750 K. S is found to adsorb on the fourfold hollow sites in both structures leading to Pendry R-factor values of 0.17 for the p(2 x 2)-S and 0.16 for the c(2 x 2)-S structures. The distances between S and the nearest and next-nearest Ir atoms were found to be similar in both structures: 2.36 +/- 0.01 angstrom and 3.33 +/- 0.01 angstrom, respectively. The buckling in the second substrate layer is consistent with other structural studies for S adsorption on fcc{100} transition metal surfaces: 0.09 angstrom for p(2 x 2)-S and 0.02 angstrom for c(2 x 2)-S structures. The (1 x 5) reconstruction, which is the most stable phase for clean Ir{100}, is completely lifted and a c(2 x 2)-S overlayer is formed after exposure to H,S at 300 K followed by annealing to 520 K. CO temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) experiments indicate that the major factor in the poisoning of Ir by S is site blocking. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report ellipsometrically obtained adsorption isotherms for a carefully chosen test liquid on block copolymer films of Kraton G1650, compared with adsorption isotherms on homogeneous films of the constituent polymers. Standard atomic force microscopy images imply the outer surface of Kraton G1650 is chemically patterned on the nanoscale, but this could instead be a reflection of structure buried beneath a 10 nm layer of the lower energy component. Our test liquid was chosen on the basis that it did not dissolve in either component and in addition that it was nonwetting on the lower energy polymer while forming thick adsorbed films on pure substrates of the higher energy component. Our ellipsometry data for Kraton G1650 rule out the presence of segregation by the lower energy constituent to the outer surface, implying a mixed surface consistent with Cassie's law. We discuss implications of our findings and related work for the outer surface structures of block copolymer films.

Currently microporous oxidic materials including zeolites are attracting interest as potential hydrogen storage materials. Understanding how molecular hydrogen interacts with these materials is important in the rational development of hydrogen storage materials and is also challenging theoretically. In this paper, we present an incoherent inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study of the adsorption of molecular hydrogen and hydrogen deuteride (HD) in a copper substituted ZSM5 zeolite varying the hydrogen dosage and temperature. We have demonstrated how inelastic neutron scattering can help us understand the interaction of H-2 molecules with a binding site in a particular microporous material, Cu ZSM5, and by implication of other similar materials. The H-2 molecule is bound as a single species lying parallel with the surface. As H-2 dosing increases, lateral interactions between the adsorbed H-2 molecules become apparent. With rising temperature of measurement up to 70 K (the limit of our experiments), H-2 molecules remain bound to the surface equivalent to a liquid or solid H-2 phase. The implication is that hydrogen is bound rather strongly in Cu ZSM5. Using the simple model for the anisotropic interaction to calculate the energy levels splitting, we found that the measured rotational constant of the hydrogen molecule is reduced as a consequence of adsorption by the Cu ZSM5. From the decrease in total signal intensity with increasing temperature, we were able to observe the conversion of para-hydrogen into ortho-hydrogen at paramagnetic centres and so determine the fraction of paramagnetic sites occupied by hydrogen molecules, ca. 60%. The adsorption of L-CySteine and L-methionine amino acids on a chiral Cu{5 3 1} surface was investigated with high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and carbon K-edge near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) Spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. XPS shows that at 300 K L-cysteine adsorbs through two oxygen, a nitrogen and a sulfur atom, in a four point 'quadrangular footprint', whereas L-methionine adsorbs through only two oxygen and a nitrogen atom in a 'triangular footprint'. NEWS was used to clarify the adsorption geometry of both molecules, which suggests a binding orientation to the top layer and second layer atoms in two different orientations associated with adsorption sites on {1 1 0} and {3 1 1} microfacets; of the Cu{5 3 1} surface. The surfactant properties of aqueous protein mixtures ( ranaspumins) from the foam nests of the tropical frog Physalaemus pustulosus have been investigated by surface tension, two-photon excitation. uorescence microscopy, specular neutron reflection, and related biophysical techniques. Ranaspumins lower the surface tension of water more rapidly and more effectively than standard globular proteins under similar conditions. Two- photon excitation. uorescence microscopy of nest foams treated with fluorescent marker ( anilinonaphthalene sulfonic acid) shows partitioning of hydrophobic proteins into the air-water interface and allows imaging of the foam structure. The surface excess of the adsorbed protein layers, determined from measurements of neutron reflection from the surface of water utilizing H2O/D2O mixtures, shows a persistent increase of surface excess and layer thickness with bulk concentration. At the highest concentration studied ( 0.5 mg ml(-1)), the adsorbed layer is characterized by three distinct regions: a protruding top layer of similar to20 Angstrom, a middle layer of similar to30 Angstrom, and a more diffuse submerged layer projecting some 25 Angstrom into bulk solution. This suggests a model involving self-assembly of protein aggregates at the air-water interface in which initial foam formation is facilitated by specific surfactant proteins in the mixture, further stabilized by subsequent aggregation and cross-linking into a multilayer surface complex.

A cross-platform field campaign, OP3, was conducted in the state of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo between April and July of 2008. Among the suite of observations recorded, the campaign included measurements of NOx and O3 – crucial outputs of any model chemistry mechanism. We describe the measurements of these species made from both the ground site and aircraft. We then use the output from two resolutions of the chemistry transport model p-TOMCAT to illustrate the ability of a global model chemical mechanism to capture the chemistry at the rainforest site. The basic model performance is good for NOx and poor for ozone. A box model containing the same chemical mechanism is used to explore the results of the global model in more depth and make comparisons between the two. Without some parameterization of the nighttime boundary layer – free troposphere mixing (i.e. the use of a dilution parameter), the box model does not reproduce the observations, pointing to the importance of adequately representing physical processes for comparisons with surface measurements. We conclude with a discussion of box model budget calculations of chemical reaction fluxes, deposition and mixing, and compare these results to output from p-TOMCAT. These show the same chemical mechanism behaves similarly in both models, but that emissions and advection play particularly strong roles in influencing the comparison to surface measurements.

We have studied enantiospecific differences in the adsorption of (S)- and (R)-alanine on Cu{531}R using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. At saturation coverage, alanine adsorbs as alaninate forming a p(1 4) superstructure. LEED shows a significantly higher degree of long-range order for the S than for the R enantiomer. Also carbon K-edge NEXAFS spectra show differences between (S)- and (R)-alanine in the variations of the ð resonance when the linear polarization vector is rotated within the surface plane. This indicates differences in the local adsorption geometries of the molecules, most likely caused by the interaction between the methyl group and the metal surface and/or intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Comparison with model calculations and additional information from LEED and photoelectron spectroscopy suggest that both enantiomers of alaninate adsorb in two different orientations associated with triangular adsorption sites on {110} and {311} microfacets of the Cu{531} surface. The experimental data are ambiguous as to the exact difference between the local geometries of the two enantiomers. In one of two models that fit the data equally well, significantly more (R)-alaninate molecules are adsorbed on {110} sites than on {311} sites whereas for (S)-alaninate the numbers are equal. The enantiospecific differences found in these experiments are much more pronounced than those reported from other ultrahigh vacuum techniques applied to similar systems.

When water is coadsorbed with oxygen at coverages above 0.25ML an intact water species is observed in high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy up to 220 K, which is significantly more stable than intact water on the clean surface. The presence of this species causes a shift in the O 1s binding energy of the pre-adsorbed oxygen, which indicates the formation of hydrogen bonds between the two adsorbates. Low coverages of oxygen induce partial dissociation and recombinative desorption in the same temperature range, which illustrates that desorption temperatures alone cannot be used to determine whether water is molecularly intact or not.

Two different ways of performing low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) structure determinations for the p(2 x 2) structure of oxygen on Ni {111} are compared: a conventional LEED-IV structure analysis using integer and fractional-order IV-curves collected at normal incidence and an analysis using only integer-order IV-curves collected at three different angles of incidence. A clear discrimination between different adsorption sites can be achieved by the latter approach as well as the first and the best fit structures of both analyses are within each other's error bars (all less than 0.1 angstrom). The conventional analysis is more sensitive to the adsorbate coordinates and lateral parameters of the substrate atoms whereas the integer-order-based analysis is more sensitive to the vertical coordinates of substrate atoms. Adsorbate-related contributions to the intensities of integer-order diffraction spots are independent of the state of long-range order in the adsorbate layer. These results show, therefore, that for lattice-gas disordered adsorbate layers, for which only integer-order spots are observed, similar accuracy and reliability can be achieved as for ordered adsorbate layers, provided the data set is large enough.

The adsorption of oxygen on the chiral Pt{531} surface was studied by high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HRXPS) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). After the surface is annealed in oxygen (3 x 10(-7) mbar), three O 1s peaks are observed in XPS. One peak, at 529.5 eV, is assigned to chemisorbed oxygen; it disappears after annealing in vacuo to temperatures above 900 K. The other two peaks at 530.8 and 532.3 eV are stable up to at least 1250 K. They are associated with oxide clusters on the surface. These clusters readily react with coadsorbed carbon monoxide at temperatures between 315 and 620 K.
