There is in Catalan a set of verbs, the so-called «velar verbs», whose differential characteristic consists in presenting a velar segment between the root and the inflectional suffixes in certain morphosyntactic contexts. This velar segment has traditionally been considered as being part of the root in the contexts where it occurs, and has been made responsible for the typical allomorphic character of velar verbs. Under the assumption that regular verbs are only one-root verbs, velar verbs have been treated as irregular verbs. Nevertheless, neither the phonic character of the velar segment nor the marginal character of velar verbs is clear. The aim of this paper is to present a different account of velar verbs on the basis of the inflectional morphological character of the velar segment. The work is split into two parts. The first one focuses on standard Catalan, and tries to show that in this variety velar verbs are better treated as regular verbs. The second one focuses on other Catalan varieties, and aims to exhibit the incoherence implied in the traditional treatment of velar verbs in the context of the Catalan language as a whole. The discussion is mainly developed on morphological grounds, halfway between theory and description.

Introduction: Blockade of the renin-angiotensin system is one of the major therapeutic strategies in the management of patients with essential hypertension, congestive heart failure and diabetic as well as non-diabetic renal diseases. As the first angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) on the market, losartan belongs to the most frequently prescribed ARB. Area covered : The present review examines the pharmacokinetics of losartan with a special discussion on the dose of losartan that should be used in clinical practice to obtain the maximal benefits of the drug. Readers are provided with arguments suggesting that the dose of 50 mg losartan is probably too low and that losartan should preferably be prescribed at the dose of 100 mg/day or higher. Expert opinion : Losartan is an effective antagonist of angiotensin II AT(1) receptors which has been shown to provide important clinical benefits in patients with hypertension, congestive heart failure and renal diseases. Losartan should be prescribed at the dose of 100 mg/day and the use of higher doses should be reconsidered in future studies to improve its clinical efficacy.

This paper studies a risk measure inherited from ruin theory and investigates some of its properties. Specifically, we consider a value-at-risk (VaR)-type risk measure defined as the smallest initial capital needed to ensure that the ultimate ruin probability is less than a given level. This VaR-type risk measure turns out to be equivalent to the VaR of the maximal deficit of the ruin process in infinite time. A related Tail-VaR-type risk measure is also discussed.

Objective The goal of this study was to investigate whether increasing the dose of an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) provides as much benefits as combining the ARB with an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) in terms of blood pressure (BP) control and urinary albumin excretion (UAE) in hypertensive patients with a proteinuria. Methods We enrolled 20 hypertensive patients with proteinuric nephropathies and a reduced renal function in a randomized, 12-month, triple-crossover, prospective, open-label study to compare the effects of a regular dose of losartan (Los 100mg q.d., LOS100) vs. a high dose of losartan (Los 100mg b.i.d., LOS200) vs. losartan 100mg q.d. associated with lisinopril 20 mg q.d. (LOS100 + LIS20). Each treatment was given for 8 weeks with a 4-week initial run-in period and 2 weeks of washout between each treatment phases. 24 h UAE and ambulatory BP were measured during the running phase and at the end of each treatment period. Results Compared to pretreatment, 24 h SBP and DBP were reduced by 10/5 +/- 7/4 mmHg with LOS100 (P=0.023 vs. baseline) and, respectively, 13/6 +/- 12/5 mmHg with LOS200 (P=0.011) and 19/9 +/- 15/8 mmHg with LOS100+LIS20 (P < 0.01). UAE decreased significantly with LOS100 and to an even greater degree with LOS200 and LOS100+LIS20 (P < 0.01 vs. baseline for both and P=0.032, LOS100+LIS20 vs. LOS200). The combination had a greater impact in patients with a high baseline proteinuria as suggested by a nonparallel leftward shift of the relationship between the changes in UAE induced by the combination and those induced by LOS200. The high dose of losartan was better tolerated than the combination. Conclusion Increasing the dose of losartan from 100mg once daily to 100mg twice a day enables to obtain a greater decrease in BP and proteinuria and is better tolerated than combining the ARB with lisinopril, though the high dose appears to be slightly less effective than the combination in patients with a marked proteinuria. Rat pancreatic alpha- and beta-cells are critically dependent on hormonal signals generating cyclic AMP (cAMP) as a synergistic messenger for nutrient-induced hormone release. Several peptides of the glucagon-secretin family have been proposed as physiological ligands for cAMP production in beta-cells, but their relative importance for islet function is still unknown. The present study shows expression at the RNA level in beta-cells of receptors for glucagon, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), and glucagon-like peptide I(7-36) amide (GLP-I), while RNA from islet alpha-cells hybridized only with GIP receptor cDNA. Western blots confirmed that GLP-I receptors were expressed in beta-cells and not in alpha-cells. Receptor activity, measured as cellular cAMP production after exposing islet beta-cells for 15 min to a range of peptide concentrations, was already detected using 10 pmol/l GLP-I and 50 pmol/l GIP but required 1 nmol/l glucagon. EC50 values of GLP-I- and GIP-induced cAMP formation were comparable (0.2 nmol/l) and 45-fold lower than the EC50 of glucagon (9 nmol/l). Maximal stimulation of cAMP production was comparable for the three peptides. In purified alpha-cells, 1 nmol/l GLP-I failed to increase cAMP levels, while 10 pmol/l to 10 nmol/l GIP exerted similar stimulatory effects as in beta-cells. In conclusion, these data show that stimulation of glucagon, GLP-I, and GIP receptors in rat beta-cells causes cAMP production required for insulin release, while adenylate cyclase in alpha-cells is positively regulated by GIP.

The aim of the present work was to study how the information on product labels influences consumer expectations and their acceptance and purchase intention of dark chocolate. Six samples of dark choco- late, varying in brand (premium and store brand) and in type of product (regular dark chocolate, single cocoa origin dark chocolate and high percentage of cocoa dark chocolate), were evaluated by 109 con- sumers who scored their liking and purchase intention under three conditions: blind (only tasting the products), expected (observing product label information) and informed (tasting the products together with provision of the label information). In the expected condition, consumer liking was mainly affected by the brand. In the blind condition, differences in liking were due to the type of product; the samples with a high percentage of cocoa were those less preferred by consumers. Under the informed condition, liking of dark chocolates varied depending on both brand and type of product. Premium brand chocolates generated high consumer expectations of chocolate acceptability, which were fulfilled by the sensory characteristics of the products. Store brand chocolates created lower expectations, but when they were tasted they were as acceptable as premium chocolates. Claims of a high percentage of cocoa and single cocoa origin on labels did not generate higher expectations than regular dark chocolates.
On the existence of bi-pyramidal central configurations of the n + 2-body problem with an n-gon base
Resumo:
Abstract. In this paper we prove the existence of central con gurations of the n + 2{body problem where n equal masses are located at the vertices of a regular n{gon and the remaining 2 masses, which are not necessarily equal, are located on the straight line orthogonal to the plane containing the n{gon passing through its center. Here this kind of central con gurations is called bi{pyramidal central con gurations. In particular, we prove that if the masses mn+1 and mn+2 and their positions satisfy convenient relations, then the con guration is central. We give explicitly those relations.

We report the case study of a French-Spanish bilingual dyslexic girl, MP, who exhibited a severe visual attention (VA) span deficit but preserved phonological skills. Behavioural investigation showed a severe reduction of reading speed for both single items (words and pseudo-words) and texts in the two languages. However, performance was more affected in French than in Spanish. MP was administered an intensive VA span intervention programme. Pre-post intervention comparison revealed a positive effect of intervention on her VA span abilities. The intervention further transferred to reading. It primarily resulted in faster identification of the regular and irregular words in French. The effect of intervention was rather modest in Spanish that only showed a tendency for faster word reading. Text reading improved in the two languages with a stronger effect in French but pseudo-word reading did not improve in either French or Spanish. The overall results suggest that VA span intervention may primarily enhance the fast global reading procedure, with stronger effects in French than in Spanish. MP underwent two fMRI sessions to explore her brain activations before and after VA span training. Prior to the intervention, fMRI assessment showed that the striate and extrastriate visual cortices alone were activated but none of the regions typically involved in VA span. Post-training fMRI revealed increased activation of the superior and inferior parietal cortices. Comparison of pre- and post-training activations revealed significant activation increase of the superior parietal lobes (BA 7) bilaterally. Thus, we show that a specific VA span intervention not only modulates reading performance but further results in increased brain activity within the superior parietal lobes known to housing VA span abilities. Furthermore, positive effects of VA span intervention on reading suggest that the ability to process multiple visual elements simultaneously is one cause of successful reading acquisition.

Introduction: Biological. therapy has dramatically changed management of Crohn's disease (CD). New data have confirmed the benefit and relative long-term safety of anti-TNF alpha inhibition as part of a regular scheduled administration programme. The EPACT appropriateness criteria for maintenance treatment after medically-induced remission (MIR) or surgically-induced remission (SIR) of CD thus required updating. Methods: A multidisciplinary international expert panel (EPACT II, Geneva, Switzerland) discussed and anonymously rated detailed, explicit clinical indications based on evidence in the literature and personal expertise. Median ratings (on a 9-point scale) were stratified into three assessment categories: appropriate (7-9), uncertain (4-6 and/or disagreement) and inappropriate (1-3). Experts ranked appropriate medication according to their own clinical practice, without any consideration of cost. Results: Three hundred and ninety-two specific indications for maintenance treatment of CD were rated (200 for MIR and 192 for SIR). Azathioprine, methotrexate and/or anti-TNF alpha antibodies were considered appropriate in 42 indications, corresponding to 68% of all appropriate interventions (97% of MIR and 39% of SIR). The remaining appropriate interventions consisted of mesalazine and a "wait-and-see" strategy. Factors that influenced the panel's voting were patient characteristics and outcome of previous treatment. Results favour use of anti-TNF alpha agents after failure of any immunosuppressive therapy, while earlier primary use remains controversial. Conclusion: Detailed explicit appropriateness criteria (EPACT) have been updated for maintenance treatment of CD. New expert recommendations for use of the classic immunosuppressors as well as anti-TNF alpha agents are now freely available online (www.epact.ch). The validity of these criteria should now be tested by prospective evaluation. (C) 2009 European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

1. The effect of a haematophageous ectoparasite, the hen flea, on quality an number of offspring was experimentally investigated in the great tit. The experiment consisted of a controlled infestation of a random sample of nests with the parasitic flea and of a regular treatment of control nests with Microwaves in order to eliminate the naturally occurring fleas. 2. To assess the effects of fleas on variables related to offspring number, we considered the number of hatchlings and fledglings, the mortality between hatching and fledging, and the hatching and fledging success. For assessment of offspring quality, we measured body mass, tarsus and wing length, and calculated the nutritional condition of, nestlings as the ratio of body mass to tarsus length. A physiological variable, the haematocrit level, was also measured. 3. Hatching success and hatchling numbers did not differ between the two experimental groups. Offspring mortality between hatching and fledging was significantly higher in the infested broods (xBAR = 0.22 chicks dead per day) than in the parasite-free broods (xBAR = 0.07 dead per day). Fledging success was 83% in the parasite-free broods, but only 53% in the infested ones. The number of fledglings in infested broods (xBAR = 3.7 fledglings +/-2.1 SD) was significantly lower than in the parasite-free (xBAR = 4.9 +/- 1.1 SD) broods. 4. Body mass of chicks in the infested broods was significantly smaller than in the parasite-free broods both 14 days and 17 days after hatching. The chicks in the infested broods reached a significantly smaller tarsus length than the ones in the parasite-free broods. Close to fledging, the nutritional condition of chicks was significantly lower in infested broods. Haematocrit levels were significantly lower in the infested broods. 5. Brood size correlated differently with body mass and condition of chicks in infested and parasite-free nests. In parasite-free broods both body mass and condition of chicks at age 17 days, i.e. close to fledging, were significantly higher in small broods than in large ones. However, in the infested broods chicks were of the same body mass and condition in large as in small broods. Therefore, in parasite-free broods fitness can potentially be gained through offspring quality or number or both, whereas in infested broods it can be gained through offspring quantity only. In other words, a trade-off between quality and number of offspring is feasible only in the absence of the parasitic hen flea. 6. These results emphasize the need to study the effects of ectoparasites on ecological, behavioural and evolutionary traits of their bird hosts. A knowledge of these effects is essential for the understanding of population dynamics, behaviour and life-history traits of the hosts.

In the urinary bladder of the toad Bufo marinus aldosterone (between 0.8 and 100 nM) stimulates Na+ transport [half-maximal induction concentration (K1/2) = 6.5 nM]. At low hormone concentrations (0.8-8 nM), the increase of Na+ transport between 0.75 and 2.5 h is accompanied by a fall in transepithelial resistance (R). Higher hormone concentrations (30-800 nM) induce an additional resistance-independent fraction of Na+ transport within 2.5-8 h. From 6 h on, aldosterone (between 0.2 and 20 nM) stimulates in the same tissue the biosynthesis rate of the alpha- and beta-subunits of Na+-K+-ATPase (K1/2 = 3 and 1.5 nM, respectively). New pump synthesis is thus not a prerequisite for the early mineralocorticoid response but might be linked to the late transport event. The mineralocorticoid response is usually ascribed to interaction with the higher affinity type 1 receptor. In the present study we show, however, that at least 55% of the overall Na+ transport response is linked to nuclear occupation of the lower affinity type 2 receptors [dissociation constant (Kd) = 50 nM, maximum number of binding sites (Nmax) = 315 fmol/mg protein]. Distinct aldosterone effects, such as the fall in R and the increase in Na+-K+-ATPase synthesis, are more closely related to occupation of type 1 receptors (Kd = 0.3 nM, Nmax = 23 fmol/mg protein). At maximal induction of these latter parameters, only about 20% of type 2 receptors are occupied. These results suggest that both types of aldosterone receptors are involved in the mediation of the full mineralocorticoid response: type 1 in the early and late and type 2 particularly in the late tissue response.

Various pulmonary artery preparations in vitro demonstrate sustained endothelium-dependent contractions upon hypoxia. To determine whether endothelin-1 could mediate this phenomenon, we examined the effect of bosentan, a new antagonist of both the ETA and ETB subtypes of the endothelin receptor. Small (300 pm) pulmonary arteries from rats were mounted on a myograph, precontracted with prostaglandin F2 alpha and exposed to hypoxia (PO2, 10 to 15 mm Hg, measured on-line) for 45 min. Endothelium-intact control rings exhibited a biphasic response, with a transient initial vasoconstriction (phase 1) followed by a second slowly developing sustained contraction (phase 2). Expressed in percent of the maximal response to 80 mmol/L KCl, the amplitudes of phase 1 (peak tension) and 2 (tension after 45 min of hypoxia) averaged 37 +/- 12% and 17 +/- 14%, respectively (n = 11). In endothelium-denuded rings, phase 1 persisted while the amplitude of phase 2 was reduced to 2 +/- 12% (p < 0.05, n = 8), showing the endothelium dependence of this contraction. Neither phase was significantly decreased in rings treated with 10(-5) mmol/L bosentan (38 +/- 15% and 17 +/- 12%, respectively, n = 6). The PO2 threshold for onset of hypoxic contraction was not significantly different among these three groups and averaged 32 +/- 24 mm Hg. In a separate experiment, we assessed the inhibitory effect of 10(-5) mol/L bosentan on the response to 10(-8) mol/L endothelin-I. Rings treated for 45 min with 10(-8) mol/L endothelin-1 alone exhibited a maximal contraction of 75 +/- 27% (n = 6). This was reduced to 4 +/- 17% (p < 0.01, n = 6) in rings treated with both 10(-8) mol/L endothelin-1 and 10(-5) mol/L bosentan. We conclude that complete blockade of all endothelin receptor subtypes has no effect on either endothelium-dependent or -independent hypoxic contractions in this preparation. This suggests that endothelial factors other than endothelin-I mediate the acute hypoxic contractions of small pulmonary arteries in the rat.
