El rápido crecimiento del los sistemas multicore y los diversos enfoques que estos han tomado, permiten que procesos complejos que antes solo eran posibles de ejecutar en supercomputadores, hoy puedan ser ejecutados en soluciones de bajo coste también denominadas "hardware de comodidad". Dichas soluciones pueden ser implementadas usando los procesadores de mayor demanda en el mercado de consumo masivo (Intel y AMD). Al escalar dichas soluciones a requerimientos de cálculo científico se hace indispensable contar con métodos para medir el rendimiento que los mismos ofrecen y la manera como los mismos se comportan ante diferentes cargas de trabajo. Debido a la gran cantidad de tipos de cargas existentes en el mercado, e incluso dentro de la computación científica, se hace necesario establecer medidas "típicas" que puedan servir como soporte en los procesos de evaluación y adquisición de soluciones, teniendo un alto grado de certeza de funcionamiento. En la presente investigación se propone un enfoque práctico para dicha evaluación y se presentan los resultados de las pruebas ejecutadas sobre equipos de arquitecturas multicore AMD e Intel.

The microbial synthesis of nanoparticles is a green chemistry approach that combines nanotechnology and microbial biotechnology. The aim of this study was to obtain silver nanoparticles (SNPs) using aqueous extract from the filamentous fungus Fusarium oxysporum as an alternative to chemical procedures and to evaluate its antifungal activity. SNPs production increased in a concentration-dependent way up to 1 mM silver nitrate until 30 days of reaction. Monodispersed and spherical SNPs were predominantly produced. After 60 days, it was possible to observe degenerated SNPs with in additional needle morphology. The SNPs showed a high antifungal activity against Candida and Cryptococcus , with minimum inhibitory concentration values ≤ 1.68 µg/mL for both genera. Morphological alterations of Cryptococcus neoformans treated with SNPs were observed such as disruption of the cell wall and cytoplasmic membrane and lost of the cytoplasm content. This work revealed that SNPs can be easily produced by F. oxysporum aqueous extracts and may be a feasible, low-cost, environmentally friendly method for generating stable and uniformly sized SNPs. Finally, we have demonstrated that these SNPs are active against pathogenic fungi, such as Candida and Cryptococcus .

An increasing amount of research has been conducted on immunoglobulin Y (IgY) because the use of IgY offers several advantages with respect to diagnostic testing, including its easy accessibility, low cost and translatability to large-scale production, in addition to the fact that it can be ethically produced. In a previous work, immunoglobulin was produced and purified from egg yolks (IgY) reactive to hepatitis A virus (HAV) antigens. In the present work, this anti-HAV-specific IgY was used in an indirect immunofluorescence assay to detect viral antigens in liver biopsies that were obtained from experimentally infected cynomolgus monkeys. Fields that were positive for HAV antigen were detected in liver sections using confocal microscopy. In conclusion, egg yolks from immunised hens may be a reliable source for antibody production, which can be employed for immunological studies.

Next Generation Access Networks (NGAN) are the new step forward to deliver broadband services and to facilitate the integration of different technologies. It is plausible to assume that, from a technological standpoint, the Future Internet will be composed of long-range high-speed optical networks; a number of wireless networks at the edge; and, in between, several access technologies, among which, the Passive Optical Networks (xPON) are very likely to succeed, due to their simplicity, low-cost, and increased bandwidth. Among the different PON technologies, the Ethernet-PON (EPON) is the most promising alternative to satisfy operator and user needs, due to its cost, flexibility and interoperability with other technologies. One of the most interesting challenges in such technologies relates to the scheduling and allocation of resources in the upstream (shared) channel. The aim of this research project is to study and evaluate current contributions and propose new efficient solutions to address the resource allocation issues in Next Generation EPON (NG-EPON). Key issues in this context are future end-user needs, integrated quality of service (QoS) support and optimized service provisioning for real time and elastic flows. This project will unveil research opportunities, issue recommendations and propose novel mechanisms associated with the convergence within heterogeneous access networks and will thus serve as a basis for long-term research projects in this direction. The project has served as a platform for the generation of new concepts and solutions that were published in national and international conferences, scientific journals and also in book chapter. We expect some more research publications in addition to the ones mentioned to be generated in a few months.

The aim of this study was to evaluate splenic eosinophil and mast cell accumulation using pagoda red stain in a series of anaphylaxis-related deaths that underwent medico-legal investigations. Our goal was to assess whether fatal reactions to insect stings, intramuscularly administered antibiotics and intravenously injected contrast media are responsible for specific patterns of eosinophil and mast cell accumulation. Two study groups were prospectively formed, an anaphylaxis-related death group and a control group. Autopsy, histology (haematoxylin-eosin stain, pagoda red stain and immunohistochemistry using anti-tryptase antibodies), toxicology and postmortem biochemistry (beta-tryptase, total IgE and specific IgE) were performed in all cases. All tested parameters (spleen weight, beta-tryptase and total IgE levels as well as eosinophil, mast cell and degranulated mast cell numbers in the spleen) were significantly higher in the anaphylaxis-related death group. No statistically significant differences were observed among the various groups (intramuscular antibiotic injection, intravenous contrast medium administration and stinging insects) in any combination, suggesting that mast cell and eosinophil accumulation in the spleen during anaphylaxis does not have any specific pattern related to the triggering allergen. Despite a lower sensitivity than immunohistochemical staining in discriminating eosinophil and mast cells, pagoda red stain allowed these cells to be identified and could therefore be proposed as a low-cost, first-line diagnostic procedure in those situations where immunohistochemistry is not systematically performed or cannot be carried out.

The Mechatronics Research Centre (MRC) owns a small scale robot manipulator called aMini-Mover 5. This robot arm is a microprocessor-controlled, six-jointed mechanical armdesigned to provide an unusual combination of dexterity and low cost.The Mini-Mover-5 is operated by a number of stepper motors and is controlled by a PCparallel port via a discrete logic board. The manipulator also has an impoverished array ofsensors.This project requires that a new control board and suitable software be designed to allow themanipulator to be controlled from a PC. The control board will also provide a mechanism forthe values measured using some sensors to be returned to the PC.On this project I will consider: stepper motor control requirements, sensor technologies,power requirements, USB protocols, USB hardware and software development and controlrequirements (e.g. sample rates).In this report we will have a look at robots history and background, as well as we willconcentrate how stepper motors and parallel port work

Plants naturally synthesize a variety of polymers that have been used by mankind as a source of useful biomaterials. For example, cellulose, the main constituent of plant cell wall and the most abundant polymer on earth, has been used for several thousand years as a source of fibers for various fabrics. Similarly, rubber extracted from the bark of the tree Hevea brasiliensis, has been a major source of elastomers until the development of similar synthetic polymers. In the last century, the usefulness of plant polymers as biomaterials has been expanded through the chemical modification of the natural polymers. For example, a number of plastics have been made by substituting the hydroxyl groups present on the glucose moiety of cellulose with larger groups, such as nitrate or acetate, giving rise to materials such as cellulose acetate, a clear plastic used in consumer products such as toothbrush handles and combs. Similarly, starch has been used in the manufacture of plastics by either using it in blends with synthetic polymers or as the main constituent in biodegradable plastics. The advent of transformation and expres- sion of foreign genes in plants has created the possibility of expanding the usefulness of plants to include the synthesis of a range of biomolecules. In view of the capacity of certain crops to produce a large quantity of organic raw material at low cost, such as oils and starch, it is of interest to explore the possibility of using transgenic plants as efficient vectors for the synthesis of biopolymers. Such plant based biopolymers could replace, in part, the synthetic plastics and elastomers produced from petroleum, offering the advantage of renewability and sustainability. Furthermore, being natural pro- ducts, biopolymers are usually biodegradable and can thus contribute to alleviate problems associated with the management of plastic waste. In this article, the emphasis will be on the use of transgenic plants for the synthesis of two novel classes of industrially useful polymers, namely protein based polymers made from natural or artificial genes, and polyhydroxyalkanoates, a family of bacterial poly- esters having the properties of biodegradable plastics and elastomers.

This paper derives a model of markets with system goods and two technological standards. An established standard incurs lower unit production costs but causes a negative externality. The paper derives the conditions for policy intervention and compares the effect of direct and indirect cost-reducing subsidies in two markets with system goods in the presence of externalities. If consumers are committed to the technology by purchasing one of the components, direct subsidies are preferable. For a medium-low cost difference between technological standards and a low externality cost it is optimal to provide a direct subsidy only to the first technology adopter. As the higher the externality cost raises, the more technology adopters should be provided with direct subsidies. This effect is robust in all extensions. In the absence of consumers commitment to a technological standard indirect and direct subsidies are both desirable. In this case, the subsidy to the first adopter is lower then the subsidy to the second adopter. Moreover, for the low cost difference between technological standards and low externality cost the fi rst fi rm chooses a superior standard without policy intervention. Finally, a perfect compatibility between components based on different technological standards enhances an advantage of indirect subsidies for medium-high externality cost and cost difference between technological standards. Nanomotors are nanoscale devices capable of converting energy into movement and forces. Among them, self-propelled nanomotors offer considerable promise for developing new and novel bioanalytical and biosensing strategies based on the direct isolation of target biomolecules or changes in their movement in the presence of target analytes. The mainachievements of this project consists on the development of receptor-functionalized nanomotors that offer direct and rapid target detection, isolation and transport from raw biological samples without preparatory and washing steps. For example, microtube engines functionalized with aptamer, antibody, lectin and enzymes receptors were used for the direct isolation of analytes of biomedical interest, including proteins and whole cells, among others. A target protein was also isolated from a complex sample by using an antigen-functionalized microengine navigating into the reservoirs of a lab-on-a-chip device. The new nanomotorbased target biomarkers detection strategy not only offers highly sensitive, rapid, simple and low cost alternative for the isolation and transport of target molecules, but also represents a new dimension of analytical information based on motion. The recognition events can be easily visualized by optical microscope (without any sophisticated analytical instrument) to reveal the target presence and concentration. The use of artificial nanomachines has shown not only to be useful for (bio)recognition and (bio)transport but also for detection of environmental contamination and remediation. In this context, micromotors modified with superhydrophobic layer demonstrated that effectively interacted, captured, transported and removed oil droplets from oil contaminated samples. Finally, a unique micromotor-based strategy for water-quality testing, that mimics live-fish water-quality testing, based on changes in the propulsion behavior of artificial biocatalytic microswimmers in the presence of aquatic pollutants was also developed. The attractive features of the new micromachine-based target isolation and signal transduction protocols developed in this project offer numerous potential applications in biomedical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and forensic analysis.

Un dels reptes tecnològics més importants del segle XXI és el desenvolupament i organització de materials funcionals a escala nanomètrica ja que permet modificar-ne les propietats fonamentals i generar-ne de noves. En el cas dels òxids complexos aquesta tecnologia ha generat grans perspectives en diferents àrees d’estudi perquè presenten propietats molt interessants com la magnetoresistència colossal, superconductivitat o multiferroicitat. En particular, en l’òxid complex superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) s’ha demostrat que la formació de capes superconductores sobre plantilles nanoestructurades o bé la formació de nanocompostos en una matriu superconductora permet millorar de manera espectacular les seves propietats (corrent crític). Aquests resultats introduiran canvis paradigmàtics en la tecnologia de l’energia elèctrica (cables, motors, generadors) i en totes aquelles aplicacions que requereixin camps magnètics intensos. Ara bé, cal aconseguir-ho mitjançant tècniques de baix cost i que permetin un fàcil escalat. Durant els 4 mesos que s’ha disfrutat de l’ajut BP s’han preparat amb èxit noves capes primes superconductores nanoestructurades mitjançant la introducció d’una fase secundària nanomètrica complexa, Ba2YTaO6 (BYTO), dins la matriu d’YBCO pel mètode de baix cost de deposició de solucions químiques. Aquesta nova composició ha donat lloc a un augment significatiu de les propietats superconductores comparat amb la fase tradicional d’YBCO i per tant tenen gran potencial per fabricar futures cintes superconductores.

Great effort is put into developing reliable, predictive, high-throughput, and low-cost screening approaches for the toxicity evaluation of ambient and manufactured nanoparticles (NP). These tests often consider oxidative reactivity, as oxidative stress is a well-documented pathway in particle toxicology. Based on a panel of six carbonaceous and five metal/metal oxide (Me/MeOx) nanoparticles, we: (i) compared the specifications (linearity, detection limits, repeatability) of three acellular reactivity tests using either dithiothreitol (DTT assay), dichlorofluorescein (DCFH assay), or ascorbic acid (AA-assay) as the reducing agent; and (ii) evaluated which physicochemical properties were important for explaining the observed reactivity. The selected AA assay was found to be neither sensitive nor robust enough to be retained. For the other tests, the surface properties of carbonaceous NP were of utmost importance for explaining their reactivity. In particular, the presence of "strongly reducing" surface functions explained most of its DCFH reactivity and a large part of its DTT reactivity. For the selected Me/MeOx, a different picture emerged. Whereas all particles were able to oxidize DCFH, dissolution and complexation processes could additionally influence the measured reactivity, as observed using the DTT assay. This study suggests that a combination of the DTT and DCFH assays provides complementary information relative to the quantification of the oxidative capacity of NP.

“Un reciente estudio de la consultora Nielsen estima en 49.650 millones de € las pérdidas anuales procedentes de la inversión en publicidad no efectiva en el mundo”.Esta noticia refleja un hecho que causa alarmismo en la sociedad. Semejante gasto desbaratado en llevar a cabo un proyecto que no causa ningún beneficio es motivo de preocupación entre economistas y profesionales del Marketing. Ciertamente, entenderíamos que multitud de personas se llevasen las manos a la cabeza ante la evidencia de semejante despilfarro. Llegados a este punto, hay que comunicar dos hechos. En primer lugar, hemos de aclarar que este es un titular ficticio y los datos que se aportan son irreales.Lamentablemente, en segundo lugar se ha de exponer que las cifras estimadas reales duplican –siendo optimistas‐ las anteriormente citadas (1 “Advertising expenditure forecast 2008” ZenithOptimedia – Nielsen Facts 2008).Actualmente los expertos en Marketing están en medio de un proceso de búsqueda de nuevas fórmulas que aumenten la eficacia y reduzcan el gasto de sus campañas publicitarias, y ése es el terreno en donde se mueve el Marketing viral, fenómeno en plena expansión gracias a la creciente importancia de Internet en nuestras vidas.Este hecho fue lo que nos ha empujado a investigar sobre la disciplina y sus métodos.Descubrir qué se ocultaba detrás de la categoría “viral” y darnos cuenta de su imparable desarrollo, descubriendo cómo habíamos sido a la vez verdugos y mártires en la propagación de mensajes publicitarios.En nuestro trabajo queremos darle un nuevo sentido al concepto de ahorro en el Marketing viral, intentado descubrir si es posible llevar a cabo una transformación low‐cost del concepto de Marketing viral y aplicarla con éxito a un sector de lapoblación en el que podamos controlar los efectos de una campaña de dichas características, por lo cual escogimos a los estudiantes del campus de Ciutadella de la Universidad Pompeu Fabra como target de nuestra campaña.Además, nos planteamos analizar el ahorro de nuestra campaña mediante el análisis y comparación coste‐resultado de otras vías de Marketing tradicionales con un concepto novedoso y a la vez preciso como es el de “eficacia real publicitaria”, en el cual nos servimos de estudios sociopsicológicos de consumidores para establecer unosbaremos más cercanos a la realidad que los métodos más comunes de medición de resultados publicitarios.Para ello, es necesario crear una identidad completamente nueva. Es aquí donde surge la marca, franquicia, empresa, organización y filosofía –ficticias‐ Kimbi. Y el reto exige un esfuerzo notable: dar a conocer una identidad –comercial y empresarial‐ ficticia que no ofrece ningún servicio ni producto a un sector poblacional y crear expectativas en elobjetivo, llamar su atención, grabar en sus mentes nuestros identificativos y esperar que el virus del “movimiento Kimbi” se propague entre ellos con éxito. Es decir, competir en el saturado panorama publicitario contra multitud de multinacionales que ya tienen unos usuarios fieles y una reputación labrada, que ofrecen productos y servicios de manera gratuita en bastantes ocasiones y que disponen de ingentes cantidades de recursos y capital para publicitar su identidad comercial en multitud de medios mainstream con el objetivo de atraerles y causarles un impacto publicitario. El objetivo de nuestro trabajo es ver como la situación económica actual ha afectado al sector textil, cuáles han sido las consecuencias que ha sufrido y como los consumidores se han adaptado. Para introducirnos en el tema hemos investigado cuáles han sido las consecuencias de este sector. Todo nuestro trabajo se va a basar en el estudio diferenciado en lastiendas convencionales y las empresas low cost, ya que nuestra hipótesis principal es cómo las empresas outlet han ganado terreno a las tiendas convencionales. Nos centraremos en el centro comercial outlet ‘La Roca Village’. Para poder hacerlo nos desplazaremos hasta allí para conocer su historia y su funcionamiento. Se trata de un estudio pedagógico que realizaremos mediante una pequeña muestra y noticias recopiladas de diferentes periódicos económicos.En primer lugar, con un cuestionario podremos comprobar si los consumidores tienen conocimiento de la existencia de outlets y si a partir de la crisis acuden a ellos, haciendo distinción en un ranking de cinco tipos de tienda para conocer el perfil del consumidor.A continuación, a través de un cuestionario y una serie de experimentos vamos a analizar nuestras hipótesis.Por otro lado, realizaremos tres tipos de experimentos para confirmar o refutar nuestras hipótesis principales:El primero consiste en comparar la afluencia de gente entre tienda outlet y tienda convencional en veinte minutos, distinguiendo también un día entre semana y fin de semana.El segundo experimento se trata de comparar el número de compras realizadas entre semana y en fin de semana para tienda outlet y para tienda convencional.El tercer experimento se trata de escoger seis conjuntos de ropa aleatoriamente de la misma marca en tienda outlet, realizar lo mismo en la tienda convencional, calcular su precio medio y plantear la hipótesis de que resulta más costoso vestirse en la tienda convencional que en la tienda outlet. La marca escogida es ZARA y Lefties, ambas pertenecientes a la misma cadena, Inditex.En segundo lugar realizaremos distintas entrevistas a los responsables de tiendas convencionales y tiendas outlet de distintas marcas, de las cuáles realizaremos un resumen sintetizado.Una vez realizado esto, vamos a poder afirmar o refutar las hipótesis y proceder a nuestras conclusiones.

The efficient removal of a N- or C-terminal purification tag from a fusion protein is necessary to obtain a protein in a pure and active form, ready for use in human or animal medicine. Current techniques based on enzymatic cleavage are expensive and result in the presence of additional amino acids at either end of the proteins, as well as contaminating proteases in the preparation. Here we evaluate an alternative method to the one-step affinity/protease purification process for large-scale purification. It is based upon the cyanogen bromide (CNBr) cleavage at a single methionine placed in between a histidine tag and a Plasmodium falciparum antigen. The C-terminal segment of the circumsporozoite polypeptide was expressed as a fusion protein with a histidine tag in Escherichia coli purified by Ni-NAT agarose column chromatography and subsequently cleaved by CNBr to obtain a polypeptide without any extraneous amino acids derived from the cleavage site or from the affinity purification tag. Thus, a recombinant protein is produced without the need for further purification, demonstrating that CNBr cleavage is a precise, efficient, and low-cost alternative to enzymatic digestion, and can be applied to large-scale preparations of recombinant proteins.

¿Es usted un apasionado de los viajes? ¿Se ha vuelto un asiduo de los aviones? Si la respuesta es afirmativa, se habrá dado cuenta que en estos últimos años el precio de los billetes está bajando considerablemente. Seguramente, alguna vez se habrá preguntado a qué se debe que ciertas compañías aéreas puedan ofrecer ofertas tan atractivas para sus vuelos.La respuesta más evidente sería decir que la causa de ello consiste en una reducción de sus costes mediante la eliminación de servicios tradicionales como catering a bordo o prensa, pero la realidad va más allá.El fenómeno low cost surgido en el mercado de las aerolíneas sigue una serie de estrategias que le permite diferenciarse de sus competidoras convencionales y, de este modo, alcanzar precios que resultan mucho más apetecibles para los consumidores. Su éxito no sólo se ve reflejado en su cuota de mercado, que es cada vez más amplia, sino también en que este fenómeno se está extendiendo a otros sectores como la hotelería, el automovilismo o la red ferroviaria.Por otro lado, la ruta aérea Barcelona-Madrid es la más frecuentada del mundo. ¿Qué pasaría si otro medio de transporte competitivo hiciera este mismo trayecto? Dentro de pocos años sabremos la respuesta debido a la llegada del AVE a la Ciudad Condal, pero hemos querido adelantarnos al futuro y hacer una serie de previsiones a partir de ciertos supuestos.Nuestra investigación nos ha llevado a concluir que el sector aéreo, especialmente las aerolíneas tradicionales, padecerá importantes descensos de sus beneficios a corto plazo. Además, a largo plazo, tenemos evidencias suficientes, según lo que ha sucedido en otras ciudades europeas, que posiblemente sólo quedará una compañía aérea tradicional en el trayectoBarcelona-Madrid.Así pues, en las siguientes páginas se analizan más a fondo todos estos contenidos, con datos oficiales de las compañías e informaciones de distintas fuentes y conclusiones propias en cada uno de los apartados.
