Three new amphiphilic rare earth complexes with only two organic long chains Ln (MOP)(2)Cl (MOP=monooctadecyl phthalate, Ln=Eu, Tb, Gd) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis. The complexes (Eu, Tb) showed good luminescence property with long fluorescence lifetime, whereas the intensity and lifetime of Tb complex are greater than those of Eu complex, By measuring the triplet energy levels of ligand based on energy transfer mechanism, above phenomena have been well explained. The Langmuir films of the complexes on the air/water interface were also studied and the results show that all of them have good film-forming property.

The structure information of orientation and packing of molecular chains can be obtained from infrared transmission and reflection-absorbance (RA) spectra. In the present paper, on the basis of Umemura et al., their FORTRAN program of minicomputer was developed and can be run on 486 personal computer. By comparison of infrared transmission and RA intensities, surface enhancement factors and molecular orientation angle were calculated using the above program, and the influence of complex refractive index, angle of incidence, and thickness of LB film were discussed. These results are consistent with that of Umemura et al.

The deposition of Langmuir-Blodgett film of neodymium bisphthalocyanine derivatives is reported for the first time. Optical absorption data reveal that these films call be deposited in a reproducible manner; results are also presented showing the extreme sensitivity and selectivity of their electrical conductivity to NH3 in room temperature. The Nd bisphthalocyanine LB film is a sensitive, reproducible. rapid and stable gas sensor. Neodymium bisphthalocyanine derivatives will be candidates for thin film gas-sensitive materials. The multilayer Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of pr,ly 3-(2-(5-chlorobenzotriazole)ethyl) thiophene (PCBET) blended with amphibious arachidic acid (AA) were prepared and characterized. The photoluminescence intensity of the blend film was enhanced as the AA increased by a certain amount. The PCBET excimers were not formed in the blend LB films.

Terbium(III) stearoylanthranilate has been prepared as a high property Z-type Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film on various substrates by a vertical transfer process. The UV-visible absorption spectra and the low angle X-ray diffraction peaks have been collected in order to investigate the molecular arrangement and aggregation in the LB films. The average molecular orientation in multilayer stacking was determined by Attenuated Total Reflection Spectroscopy. The influence of the chemical environment of terbium within the LB films on the luminescence properties has been discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

In situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM) and an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) have been employed to follow the adsorption/desorption processes of phenanthraquinone (PQ sat. in 0.1 mol l(-1) HClO4, solution) accompanied with an electrochemical redox reaction on the Au electrode. The result shows that: (1) the reduced form PQH(2) adsorbed at the Au electrode and the desorption occurred when PQH(2) was oxidized to PQ; (2) the adsorption process initiates at steps or kinks which provide high active sites on the electrode surface for adsorption, and as the potential shifts to negative, a multilayer of PQH(2) may be formed at the Au electrode; (3) the reduced PQH(2) adsorbed preferentially in the area where the tip had been scanned continually; this result suggests that the tip induction may accelerate the adsorption of PQH(2) on the Au(111) electrode. Two kinds of possible reason have been discussed; (4) high resolution STM images show the strong substrate lattice information and the weak monolayer adsorbate lattice information simultaneously. The PQH(2) molecules pack into a not perfectly ordered condensed physisorbed layer at potentials of 0.1 and 0.2 V with an average lattice constant a = 11.5 +/- 0.4 Angstrom, b = 11.5 +/- 0.4 Angstrom, and gamma = 120 +/- 2 degrees; the molecular lattice is rotated with respect to the substrate lattice by about 23 +/- 2 degrees. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of three kinds of soluble polyimides were prepared with the direct deposition method, The monolayer structures were characterized with W-vis absorption spectroscopy, the wide angle X-ray scattering method and electrochemical techniques. The polyimide molecules in the LB monolayers lie orderly on the substrate surfaces with the orientation in which the dianhydride group is normal to the substrate surface and two carbonyl oxygen groups close to the surface. Therefore, the thickness of the three kinds of polyimide LB monolayers are the same because it depends on the distance between the two carbonyl oxygen groups in the same ring. The area of monomeric units are dependent on the length of the diamine group. The model of the molecular packing proposed from the quantomechanical calculation is in good agreement with the experimental results. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Adsorption and activation of small molecules NO, CO and CO+ NO on LaSrCuO4, La2CuO4 and La1.7Th0.3CuO4 which are typical samples in the sence of nonstoichiometric oxygen(lambda) anrong the series of La2-x(SrTh)(x)CuO4 +/-lambda mixed oxide catalysts were studied by means of MS- TPD (TPSR ), XRD, chemical analysis and so on. It was shown that the adsorption amount of NO can be correlated with the content of oxygen vacancy while the types and strength of adsorption of NO could be related to the oxidation state of the metallic ion. It was also found that CO molecule was first converted into CO32- and then desorbed in the form of CO2 at high temperature during the adsorption and desorption of CO on the mixed oxide with oxygen vacancy. The fact that the profiles of TPD(TPSR) of NO in co-adsorption of NO+CO and in single NO adsorption are similar shows that the adsorption of NO molecule not only has some priority to that of CO but also is stronger than that of CO. It seems that the adsorption of NO plays a dominate role in the activation and decomposition of NO.

Heteropoly acids (HPAs), such as dodecatungstosilicic acid (SiW12), adsorb strongly on to activated carbons. The surface chemical properties of the activated carbons have a pronounced effect on the adsorption of HPAs. To obtain activated carbons with the desired surface chemical properties, modification with mineral acids has been applied. The adsorption isotherms of SiW12 from aqueous solution and various acidic media on to the various carbons have been studied. On the basis of the results obtained, an adsorption model for HPAs from acidic media is presented.

Monolayers of porphyrin and phthalocyanine at the air-water interface were studied by means of film balance and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). Results showed that the final point of compression isotherm and that of recompression isotherm were coincident or not coincident depending on the target pressures. Results were discussed in terms of the morphology of monolayers observed by BAM.

Long-range ordered stripes domain structures were observed in Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) Langmuir-Blodgett monolayer film which was spread on the subphase of lanthanide ion (Eu3+) solution and transferred to a freshly cleaved mica substrate by vertical deposition. This novel phenomenon was discussed in terms of the competitive interaction of dipole-dipole and electrostatic interactions of the DPPC molecules combined with lanthanide ions with those DPPC molecules free of lanthanide ions.

The mixed oxides LaNiO3, La0.1Sr0.9NiO3, La2NiO4 and LaSrNiO4 with perovskite (ABO(3)) and related(A(2)BO(4)) structures were prepared and the adsorption property for NO and the catalytic activity for NO decomposition over these oxidse were also tested. The catalysts were characterized by means of BET surface measurement, chemical analysis, NO-TPD etc.. It was shown that the adsorption amount of NO is correlated with the concentration of oxygen vacancy formed and the adsorption type and strength of NO are related to the valence of metallic ion. Generally there are three kinds of adsorption species, NO-, NO+ and NO on the mixed oxides, among them the negative adsorpion species (NO-) are active for NO decomposition. The weaker the adsorption of oxygen on the catalyst is, the faster the mobility of oxygen is and the easier the redox process takes place in reproducing the active sites in which the oxygen species (O-, O2-) would participate.

Monolayers of liquid-crystalline polyacrylate containing para-nitro azobenzene (HP6) on the water subphase were characterized by the surface pressure (pi)-area per monomer unit (A) isotherm and were successfully transferred onto glass substrates by the vertical lifting method. The monolayer Langmuis-Blodgett (LB) films transferred at different surface pressures were studied by electron diffraction. The thickness of the monolayer LB film was measured by the transmission electron microscopy folding method. The results of the electron diffraction of the monolayer LB films of HP6 showed that a two-dimensional arrangement exists in the transferred films. According to the results of the pi-A isotherm, electron diffraction and the measured thickness of the monolayer LB film, a molecular arrangement model of HP6 on the water subphase was proposed. The ordered monolayer formation of HP6 showed it to be promising as a second-order non-linear optical material.
