This preliminary study of the drivers involved in major accidents in Iowa and their subsequent examination was undertaken by the State Planning Board. All personal injury and fatal accidents, and those property damage accidents of such serious nature as to indicate the suspension or revocation of the drivers license, occurring in the state from 1935 to April 1036 are included.

Cette étude des relations ville-campagne prolonge la réflexion amorcée à la suite d'un cours d'histoire régionale que donna Peter Southam. Ayant choisi d'analyser le développement économique de Coaticook dans une perspective strictement urbaine, je fis la découverte d'une carte qui se présenta comme une véritable révélation puisqu'elle traduisait toute la problématique sous-jacente à un espace polarisé. En effet, on pouvait découvrir, face à l'unité distincte de Coaticook, deux structures identiques, les municipalités de cantons de Barnston et de Barford, représentant, grâce à la présence des réseaux hydrographiques, routiers et ferroviaires, un terrain d'application idéale pour l'analyse des relations ville-campagne. De là est né notre intérêt d'analyser, dans un contexte ville-campagne, les fonctions de relations des deux entités spatiales en présence, l'une urbaine, l'autre rurale, évoluant en interaction toutes deux dans le cadre des Cantons de l'Est, région qui est elle-même étroitement intégrée à l'économie continentale nord-américaine. Au-delà de cette insertion à un espace économique plus vaste, notre étude se doit d'abord de rendre compte de la spécificité des deux entités spatiales. Le choix spatial de notre thèse est arbitraire et ne repose pas, par exemple, sur la zone d'influence de Coaticook bien que, et c'est là une des hypothèses que nous démontrerons plus tard, il est certain que le rayonnement de Coaticook dans un espace polarisé ne s'est pas limité aux cantons de Barnston et de Barford. Par ailleurs, si nous privilégions comme cadre spatial d'analyse l'échelle du territoire urbain et celle du canton selon leurs limites administratives respectives, nous envisagerons également l'échelle de la communauté villageoise comme l'un des axes principaux du rapport ville-campagne. Les divisions administratives ne s'étendant qu'à deux localités rurales (Dixville et Saint-Herménégilde), nous ne tenterons pas de délimiter l'aire villageoise des autres localités. Puisque nous nous intéressons davantage au phénomène villageois selon un critère fonctionnel, nous considérons alors le village "comme un lieu et une forme d'habitat dotés d'attributs et de fonctions distinctives". En fait, le choix spatial sera d'ordre documentaire puisqu'il est imposé par l'utilisation des recensements fédéraux (manuscrits et imprimés) et par l'utilisation des Mercantile Agency, sources principales sur lesquelles il sera plus facile de présenter une démonstration cohérente dans le temps comme dans l'espace. At the dawn of the twentieth century, Imperial Russia was in the throes of immense social, political and cultural upheaval. The effects of rapid industrialization, rising capitalism and urbanization, as well as the trauma wrought by revolution and war, reverberated through all levels of society and every cultural sphere. In the aftermath of the 1905 revolution, amid a growing sense of panic over the chaos and divisions emerging in modern life, a portion of Russian educated society (obshchestvennost’) looked to the transformative and unifying power of music as a means of salvation from the personal, social and intellectual divisions of the contemporary world. Transcending professional divisions, these “orphans of Nietzsche” comprised a distinct aesthetic group within educated Russian society. While lacking a common political, religious or national outlook, these philosophers, poets, musicians and other educated members of the upper and middle strata were bound together by their shared image of music’s unifying power, itself built upon a synthesis of Russian and European ideas. They yearned for a “musical Orpheus,” a composer capable of restoring wholeness to society through his music. My dissertation is a study in what I call “musical metaphysics,” an examination of the creation, development, crisis and ultimate failure of this Orphic worldview. To begin, I examine the institutional foundations of musical life in late Imperial Russia, as well as the explosion of cultural life in the aftermath of the 1905 Revolution, a vibrant social context which nourished the formation of musical metaphysics. From here, I assess the intellectual basis upon which musical metaphysics rested: central concepts (music, life-transformation, theurgy, unity, genius, nation), as well as the philosophical heritage of Nietzsche and the Christian thinkers Vladimir Solov’ev, Aleksei Khomiakov, Ivan Kireevskii and Lev Tolstoi. Nietzsche’s orphans’ struggle to reconcile an amoral view of reality with a deeply felt sense of religious purpose gave rise to neo-Slavophile interpretations of history, in which the Russian nation (narod) was singled out as the savior of humanity from the materialism of modern life. This nationalizing tendency existed uneasily within the framework of the multi-ethnic empire. From broad social and cultural trends, I turn to detailed analysis of three of Moscow’s most admired contemporary composers, whose individual creative voices intersected with broader social concerns. The music of Aleksandr Scriabin (1871-1915) was associated with images of universal historical progress. Nikolai Medtner (1879-1951) embodied an “Imperial” worldview, in which musical style was imbued with an eternal significance which transcended the divisions of nation. The compositions of Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) were seen as the expression of a Russian “national” voice. Heightened nationalist sentiment and the impact of the Great War spelled the doom of this musical worldview. Music became an increasingly nationalized sphere within which earlier, Imperial definitions of belonging grew ever more problematic. As the Germanic heritage upon which their vision was partially based came under attack, Nietzsche’s orphans found themselves ever more divided and alienated from society as a whole. Music’s inability to physically transform the world ultimately came to symbolize the failure of Russia’s educated strata to effectively deal with the pressures of a modernizing society. In the aftermath of the 1917 revolutions, music was transformed from a symbol of active, unifying power into a space of memory, a means of commemorating, reinterpreting, and idealizing the lost world of Imperial Russia itself.

Background: Helminth intestinal parasitoses are responsible for high levels of child mortality and morbidity. Hence, the capacity to diagnose these parasitoses and consequently ensure due treatment represents a factor of great importance. Objectives: The main objective of this study involves comparing two methods of concentration, parasitrap and Kato-Katz, for the diagnosis of intestinal parasitoses in faecal samples. Methods: Sample processing made recourse to two different concentration Methods: the commercial parasitrap® method and the Kato-Katz method. Results: We correspondingly collected a total of 610 stool samples from pre-school and school age children. The results demonstrate the incidence of helminth parasites in 32.8% or 32.3% of the sample collected depending on whether the concentration method applied was either the parasitrap method or the Kato-Katz method. We detected a relatively high percentage of samples testing positive for two or more species of helminth parasites. We would highlight that in searching for larvae the Kato-Katz method does not prove as appropriate as the parasitrap method. Conclusion: Both techniques prove easily applicable even in field working conditions and returning mutually agreeing results. This study concludes in favour of the need for deworming programs and greater public awareness among the rural populations of Angola.

Estas son algunas de las preguntas capitales que se hace Eduardo Viveiros de Castro en el primero de sus libros traducidos al español, denominado Metafísicas Caníbales, un libro que reelabora y desarrolla artículos anteriormente publicados por el autor. Etnólogo y amazonista brasileño, su influencia teórica se ha acentuado al proponer el concepto de perspectivismo amazónico.
