The behavior of electrical conductivity for excimer laser irradiated polyimide films in the vicinity of the critical number of laser shots was described by three-dimensional percolative phase transition model. It is: found that electrical conductivity changed more rapidly than that predicted by the percolation model. Thus, the change in microstructure with increasing number of laser shots was analyzed by FT-IR Raman spectrometry and laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry. It is demonstrated that not only the number but also the average size of graphite particles on the irradiated polyimide film surfaces increased with increasing number of laser shots. These results were helpful to better understand the critical change in electrical conductivity on the irradiated polyimide film surfaces. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Aimed at saving the radiation dose required to crosslinking the polyamid-1010, BMI/PA1010 systems containing different amounts of difunctional crosslinking agent N,N'-bis-maleimide-4,4'-biphenyl methane (BMI) were prepared and the structure changes at the crystallographic and supermolecular levels before and after irradiation were studied by using WAXD, SAXS, and DSC techniques. It was found that by incorporation of BMI the microcrystal size L-100 is lowered due to the formation of hydrogen bond between the carbonyl oxygen of BMI and the amide hydrogen of PA1010 in the hydrogen bonded plane, and the overall crystallinity W-c is also decreased. The presence of BMI causes the crystal lamella thickness d(c) to decrease and greatly thickens the transition zone d(tr) between the crystalline and amorphous regions. As for the irradiated specimen, the maximum increments in the L-100 and W-c against dose curves decrease with BMI content, and the interception point D-i, at which the L-100 and W-c curves intercept their respective horizontal line of L-100/L-100(0) and W-c/W-c(0)=1, shift to lower dose with an increase in BMI concentration. In addition. the mechanism of the radiation chemical reactions in the three different phases under the action of BMI are discussed with special focus on the interface region. A conducting layer with the conductivity of 1.2 Omega(-1)cm(-1) stripped in a solvent from KrF-laser-irradiated polyimide thin film is taken as a sample to determine the microstructure of the conducting layer. Fourier-transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies show the formation of the carbon-rich clusters after irradiation. The element analysis gives the atomic ratio of C:H:N:O for the carbon-rich cluster as 60:20:3:1. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction indicates that the conducting layer is mainly amorphous carbon with a small amount of the short-range ordered carbon-rich clusters. This study suggests a structural model with three-layer carbon sheets linked together in a random fashion for the short-range ordered carbon-rich clusters. The interplanar spacing is 3.87 Angstrom and the layer diameter 25 Angstrom. The transport model of variable-range hopping in three dimensions is used to explain the conducting behavior of the conducting layer. In our case, the short-range ordered carbon-rich clusters are assumed to be conducting islands dispersed in the amorphous carbon-rich cluster matrix.

The decaying of free radicals in the course of heating, trapped in irradiated polyamide 1010 with different crystallinities, were investigated using an ESR technique. The decaying temperature, at which all radicals decay completely, depends on the aggregation of polyamide 1010 prior to radiation. The higher the crystallinity, the higher the temperature at which the radicals disappear. Dynamically speaking, radicals in specimens with higher crystallinity take longer to decay. Radiation-induced crystallization of polyamide-1010 (PA1010) or nylon-1010 containing heterogeneous nuclei (neodymium oxide, Nd2O3) is discussed in this paper by Wide Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The results show that at low dosage the crystallinities of the irradiated specimens increase, while crystallite size (L(hkl)) decreases, indicating that some new crystallites are produced in the course of irradiation. The new centers were brought about in the fold surface of the lamellae. Copyright (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd

A comparison of radiation damage to nylon 1010 (denoted nylon-a) and nylon 1010 containing neodymium oxide (Nd2O3) (denoted nylon-b) was made by DSC, WAXD, ESR and the determination of gel fractions. The results show that radiation damage to nylon-b is delayed, and radiation damage to nylon-a is more severe than that to nylon-b, due to the protection of the fold surface of the lamellae. Furthermore, the fact that the damage begins with the fold surface of the lamellae is confirmed. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Limited

The TSL glow of X-irradiated BaLiF3 crystallite vanished within 15 min of sunlight bleaching or after 2 similar to 3 days of room temperature annealing, which indicate that X-irradiation damage is light and can be easily erased. It is also found that BaLiF3:Eu2+ is photostimulatable and seems be a promising X-ray storage phosphor for practical utilization.

Irradiated polyamide-1010 (PA1010) with and without heat treatment after gamma-ray irradiation was compared by wide angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and the determination of gel fractions. The results indicate that post radiation effects due to post radiation crosslinking and scissions affect physical properties. Post radiation effects restrain the formation and perfection of the planes (010), and make the crystals imperfect. Post radiation effects change the crystalline structures of polyamide-1010.

For recycling of waste polymers, the degradation behavior of PP was studied with a combination of radiolysis and thermolysis methods. The results revealed that thermal degradation temperature of PP was significantly reduced when PP was irradiated in the presence of a zeolite. The irradiation-induced temperature reduction depended on the zeolite structure and composition, as well as on the morphology of the mixture. Identification of pyrolysis products indicated that, in the absence of zeolite, irradiation resulted only in a change of the product distribution but no formation of new compounds. In the presence of zeolite, however, a series of oxidized products were formed. In addition, the pyrolysis could be performed at a much lower temperature. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Limited

The chemiluminescence (CL) emission from three kinds of polyethylene, HDPE, LLDPE and LDPE, which had been exposed to 80 kGy dose from Co-60 in both air and nitrogen, has been examined. CL measurement was done under both nitrogen and oxygen atmosphere. The results show that the CL emission from irradiated samples does not result from irradiation itself, but from the oxidation reactions occurring during and after irradiation. Addition of 1 phr of an antioxidant, Irganox 1010, can effectively inhibit the radiation induced oxidation in LLDPE and LDPE. In the case of HDPE, however, it was found that pure HDPE has the best resistance to radiation-induced oxidation of the polymers examined in this work. However, incorporation of Irganox 1010 was found to have not only a stabilizing effect against radiation induced oxidation, but also to promote the oxidation in some cases.

In the present work we attempt to settle the controversy on the district wherein the radiation induced reaction preferentially occurs through examining the structural changes of the irradiated polyamide-1010 specimens on both the crystallographic and the supermolecular level by using WAXD and SAXS techniques. Experimental results indicated that the chain crosslinking and scission of the irradiated specimens occur mainly in the amorphous region and on the crystal surface (or interphase), and extend into the inner portion of the crystal with increasing radiation dose.

The structural parameters of the aggregated state in the polyamide PA1010 and N,N'-bismaleimide-4,4'-diphenyl methane (BMI) system were computed by means of the desmearing intensity from SAXS and using the concept of the distance distribution function. The results revealed that the parameters Q, I(0), l(c) and L decreased with the increase BMI component, whereas O-s increased. The particle dimension Z for different BMI contents was less than 13.2 nm, and the maximum value of the distance distribution function P(Z) was found to be in the range Z = 6.5-7.0 nm.

The influence of gamma-radiation on polyamide 1010 aggregate structures and crystal damage were examined by using wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. The results revealed that some structural parameters of the aggregated state, the density differences and the degree of crystallinity W-c,W-x, essentially decreased with increasing radiation dose, but the specific surface O-s increased. Crosslinking and scission of irradiated polyamide 1010 samples occurred mainly in amorphous and interphase regions, and crystal damage and amorphization induced by gamma-radiation spread from the interphase and extended into the crystal phase with increasing radiation dose. This result also indicated that the (010) reflection with the hydrogen bond was more susceptible to the action of radiation.

Photosensitive polyimide BTDA-3MPDA was modified by UV irradiation. The structure of UV-irradiated polyimides was investigated by FTIR and gel fraction measurements. The results showed that longer UV exposure time resulted in a higher extent of crosslinking. The gas permeabilities of hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen through UV-irradiated polyimides were characterized in a temperature range from 30 degrees C to 90 degrees C. Photocrosslinking resulted in a sharp decline in gas permeability for hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen through polyimide in the initial stage of photocrosslinking. Then, as the crosslinked benzophenone percentage amounted to 28-38% for hydrogen, 17-31% for oxygen and 3-28% for nitrogen, the gas permeabilities showed another sharp decline. Gas permselectivity increased significantly with the progress of photocrosslinking, and it can be adjusted in a wide range by controlling the extent of crosslinking. Arrhenius plots of gas permeability for hydrogen and oxygen through UV-irradiated polyimides are straight lines; for nitrogen, however, change in the slope of the straight line is observed and activation energies for hydrogen and oxygen permeation show abrupt increases when crosslinked benzophenone percentage amounts to about 30%. UV-irradiated polyimides with simultaneous high gas permeability and permselectivity make them ideal candidate materials for gas separation. (C) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The melting behavior of poly(methyl methacrylate)-grafted nascent polyethylene reactor powder by plasma irradiation was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The grafting yield ranged hom 11 to 190%. Grafting was found to lower both melting point and heat of fusion during the first run of DSC determination. The heat of fusion was used to calculate the apparent grafting yield of the samples. There was little strain induced by plasma-irradiated grafting on the surface of the polyethylene crystals. A method to determine the covalent grafting yield in the graft copolymer systems was developed. (C) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
