For night remote surveillance, we present a method, the range-gated laser stroboscopic imaging(RGLSI), which uses a new kind of time delay integration mode to integrate target signals so that night remote surveillance can be realized by a low-energy illuminated laser. The time delay integration in this method has no influence on the video frame rate. Compared with the traditional range-gated laser imaging, RGLSI can reduce scintillation and target speckle effects and significantly improve the image signal-to-noise ratio analyzed. Even under low light level and low visibility conditions, the RGLSI system can effectively work. In a preliminary experiment, we have detected and recognized a railway bridge one kilometer away under a visibility of six kilometers, when the effective illuminated energy is 29.5 mu J.

Experimental demonstrations of the use of a self-imaging resonator in the phase locking of two fibre lasers are presented. The output power of the phase-locked fibre laser array exceeded 2 W Successful attempts of phase locking show that the fibre laser array is not only capable of producing high Output Power but also large on-axis intensity by this method.

The mechanism of beam splitting and principle of wide-field-of-view compensation of modified Savart polariscope in the wide-field-of-view polarization interference imaging spectrometer (WPIIS) are analyzed and discussed. Formulas for the lateral displacement and optical path difference (OPD) produced by the modified Savart polariscope are derived by ray-tracing method. The theoretical and practical guidance is thereby provided for the study, design, modulation, experiment and engineering of the polarization interference imaging spectrometers and other birefringent Fourier-transform spectrometers based on Savart polariscopes. The influence of the orientations of both polarizer and analyzer on modulation depth of spatially distributed interferograms for static polarization interference imaging spectrometer (SPIIS) is analyzed. A generally, theoretical relationship to determine the modulation depth of a SPIIS is derived. The special cases of maximum modulation depth (V = 1) and the minimum modulation depth (V = 0) are examined. Our results will provide a theoretical and practical guide for studying, developing and engineering polarization interference imaging spectrometers. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Based on the data processing technologies of interferential spectrometer, a sort of real-time data processing system on chip of interferential imaging spectrometer was studied based on large capacitance and high speed field programmable gate array( FPGA) device. The system integrates both interferograrn sampling and spectrum rebuilding on a single chip of FPGA and makes them being accomplished in real-time with advantages such as small cubage, fast speed and high reliability. It establishes a good technical foundation in the applications of imaging spectrometer on target detection and recognition in real-time.

We present a detail investigation on the development of a series of gradient index (GRIN) optical glass microlens and polymer microlens and microlens arrays in our laboratory in recent years. The special glass material GRIN lenses have been fabricated mainly by using ion-exchange technology, which are applied to construct micro-optic devices and other applications. On one hand, we demonstrated the light propagation and imaging properties of GRIN lenses and the results analyzed. On the other hand, we have explored a drop-on-demand ink-jet printing method to produce microlens array using nano-scale polymer droplets involved with a uniform ultraviolet light and heat solidifying process. The experimental setup for manufacturing polymer microlens array and the performance of refractive microlens elements are also given in this paper. (C) 2006 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
