Low-level laser therapy for the prevention of low salivary flow rate after radiotherapy and chemotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer

Abstract Objective: To determine whether low-level laser therapy can prevent salivary hypofunction after radiotherapy and chemotherapy in head and neck cancer patients. Materials and Methods: We evaluated 23 head and neck cancer patients, of whom 13 received laser therapy and 10 received clinical care only. An InGaAlP laser was used intra-orally (at 660 nm and 40 mW) at a mean dose of 10.0 J/cm2 and extra-orally (at 780 nm and 15 mW) at a mean dose of 3.7 J/cm2, three times per week, on alternate days. Stimulated and unstimulated sialometry tests were performed before the first radiotherapy and chemotherapy sessions (N0) and at 30 days after the end of treatment (N30). Results: At N30, the mean salivary flow rates were significantly higher among the laser therapy patients than among the patients who received clinical care only, in the stimulated and unstimulated sialometry tests (p = 0.0131 and p = 0.0143, respectively). Conclusion: Low-level laser therapy, administered concomitantly with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, appears to mitigate treatment-induced salivary hypofunction in patients with head and neck cancer.

Todellisuuksien risteävät tasot : ohjaajan identiteetin ja muotokielen löytämisestä

Opinnäytetyö käsittelee oman ohjaajanidentiteettini muodostumista ja oman ohjauksellisen muotokieleni hahmottumiseen johtaneita seikkoja. Käyn työssä läpi viimeisen kymmenen vuoden ajanjaksoa, jonka olen ollut teatterin aktiivisessa vaikutuspiirissä. Tarkastelen teatterikäsitykseni ja oman teatterisuhteeni muuttumista tuona aikana. Pääasiallisina tarkastelun kohteina käytän kolmea ohjaustyötäni, joiden kautta olen alkanut vahvasti muodostaa itselleni ohjaajaidentiteettiä. Ohjaukset syntyivät erilaisina ajankohtina suhteessa ammatti-identiteettini muotoutumiseen. Ensimmäinen ohjauksistani oli Eeva-Liisa Mannerin Poltettu oranssi ja sen ohjasin vuonna 2002, samana keväänä kun pyrin Stadian Esittävän taiteen koulutusohjelmaan. Toinen ohjaus oli koulutoverini Petri Jäärnin Steiner & Marie. Sen ohjasin keväällä 2005, kolmantena opiskeluvuotenani. Kolmas ohjaukseni oli ensimmäinen oma näytelmäni Natsimusikaali, joka oli myös opinnäyteohjaukseni Stadiaan. Natsimusikaalin ensi-ilta oli tammikuussa 2007. Näiden kolmen ohjauksen kautta pohdin oman muotokieleni kehittymistä ja teatterikäsitykseni muuttumista. Näistä pääasiallisena tarkastelun kohteena on kuitenkin Natsimusikaali. Se on tähänastisista töistäni ehdottomasti laajin ja siinä näkyi jo selvästi oma teatterillinen muotokieleni. Käsittelen muotokieleni muotoutumista todellisuuksien tasojen risteyttämisen kautta. Näiden ohjausten myötä käsittelen myös suhdettani tekstiin, kirjoittamiseen, tilaan, näyttelijöihin ja aiheeseen.

Innovaatioyliopisto” mediassa – Innovatiivisuuden merkitykset TKK:n, HKKK:n ja TaiK:n fuusiota koskevassa lehtikirjoittelussa

Sanomalehdissä käyty keskustelu “innovaatioyliopistosta” eli Helsinkiin sijoittuvasta Teknillisen korkeakoulun, Helsingin kauppakorkeakoulun ja Taideteollisen korkeakoulun fuusiohankkeesta on ollut vilkasta. Työnimestä huolimatta sisällöllinen keskustelu innovatiivisuudesta on ollut vähäistä. Tämän työn tutkimusmetodi on diskurssianalyysi. Sen keinoin pureudutaan innovatiivisuuden merkityksentymiseen yliopistofuusion kontekstissa. Laajasta kuuden sanomalehden artikkeliaineistosta vuosina 2005-2008 on valittu innovaatiodiskurssia edustava pääaineisto, jota on tulkittu sosiaalisesta ja kielellisestä näkökulmasta käsin. Innovatiivisuus yliopistokontekstissa merkityksentyi pääasiassa innovaatiojärjestelmien kautta. Perustutkimuksen tärkeä rooli innovaatioketjussa esittäytyi näkyvästi.

Mitotic regulation by Polo-like kinase 1 and the Chromosomal Passenger Complex

During mitosis, the duplicated genome must be accurately divided between two daughter cells. Polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) and Aurora B kinase, together with its binding partners Incenp, Survivin and Borealin (chromosomal passenger complex, CPC), have key roles in coordinating mitotic events. The accuracy of cell division is safeguarded by a signaling cascade termed the mitotic spindle checkpoint (SC), which ensures that chromosomes are not physically separated before correct bipolar attachments have been formed between kinetochores and spindle microtubules (MT). An inhibitory “wait anaphase” signal, which delays chromosome separation (anaphase onset), is created at individual kinetochores and broadcasted throughout the cell in response to lack of kinetochore-microtubule (kMT) attachment or proper interkinetochore tension. It is believed that the fast turnover of SC molecules at kinetochores contributes to the cell’s ability to produce this signal and enables rapid responses to changing cellular conditions. Kinetochores that lack MT attachment and tension express a certain phosphoepitope called the 3F3/2 phosphoepitope, which has been linked to SC signaling. In the experimental part, we investigated the regulation of the 3F3/2 phosphoepitope, analyzed whether CPC molecules turn over at centromeres, and dissected the mitotic roles of the CPC using a microinjection technique that allowed precise temporal control over its function. We found that the kinetochore 3F3/2 phosphoepitope is created by Plk1, and that CPC proteins exhibit constant exchange at centromeres. Moreover, we found that CPC function is necessary in the regulation of chromatid movements and spindle morphology in anaphase. In summary, we identified new functions of key mitotic regulators Plk1 and CPC, and provided insighs into the coordination of mitotic events.
