Rubberwood flour and cellulose have been plasticized by cyanoethylation and then blended with low-density polyethylene (LDPE). A small quantity of epoxy functionalized polyethylene i.e., polyethylene-co-glycidyl methacrylate (PEGMA) has been added to further enhance the mechanical properties. The mechanical properties were measured according to the standard ASTM methods. SEM analysis was performed for both fractured and unfractured blend specimens. The mechanical properties were improved by the addition of PEGMA compatibilizer. LDPE blends with cyanoethylated wood flour (CYWF) showed higher tensile strength and modulus than cyanoethylated cellulose CYC-LDPE blends. However CYC-LDPE blends exhibited higher relative elongation at break values as compared with the former. The TGA analysis showed lowering of thermal stability as the filler content is increased and degradation temperature of LDPE is shifted slightly to lower temperature. DSC analysis showed loss of crystallinity for the LDPE phase as the filler content is increased for both types of blends. Dielectric properties of the blends were similar to LDPE, but were lowered on adding PEGMA. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

High density Mn-Zr ferrites have been extensively used in recording head applications. The properties like permeability, los~, etc., depend on the preparation method. The :roperfies play major role in selecting these materials for various applications. In this present work., we have prepared Mn-Zn ferrites musing metal hydrazine carboxylate precursors (N2Hs)3Mn0.sZn0.sFe2(N2H3COO)3"3H20. The precursor decomposes at very low temperature (~250°C) to form ultrafine Mno.sZn0.sFe204. The partic~,e size permeability spectrum, microstructure and magnetic properties will be discussed in this paper.

The torsional potential functions Vt(phi) and Vt(psi) around single bonds N--C alpha and C alpha--C, which can be used in conformational studies of oligopeptides, polypeptides and proteins, have been derived, using crystal structure data of 22 globular proteins, fitting the observed distribution in the (phi, psi)-plane with the value of Vtot(phi, psi), using the Boltzmann distribution. The averaged torsional potential functions, obtained from various amino acid residues in L-configuration, are Vt(phi) = 1.0 cos (phi + 60 degrees); Vt(psi) = 0.5 cos (psi + 60 degrees) - 1.0 cos (2 psi + 30 degrees) - 0.5 cos (3 psi + 30 degrees). The dipeptide energy maps Vtot(phi, psi) obtained using these functions, instead of the normally accepted torsional functions, were found to explain various observations, such as the absence of the left-handed alpha helix and the C7 conformation, and the relatively high density of points near the line psi = 0 degrees. These functions derived from observational data on protein structures, will, it is hoped, explain various previously unexplained facts in polypeptide conformation.

The activity of NiO in NiO-MgO rock salt solid solution has been measured at 1300 K by employing a solid-state galvanic cell: Pt,Ni+ NiO||(CaO)ZrO2||Ni + (Nix,Mgl-x)O, Pt. A high-density tube of Zr02-15 mol% CaO has been used as the solid electrolyte for the emf measurements. The activities of the component oxides in the rock salt solid solution exhibit negative deviation from ideality at the temperature of investigation. The solid solution obeys regular solution behavior at 1300 K. The value of the regular solution parameter is found to be -12000 ((l000) J mol-1. The composition dependence of ΔGEx obtained in this study agrees reasonably well with the calorimetric data reported in the literature for NiO-MgO solid solution.

AIMS An independent, powerful coronary heart disease (CHD) predictor is a low level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Discoidal preβ-HDL particles and large HDL2 particles are the primary cholesterol acceptors in reverse cholesterol transport, a key anti-atherogenic HDL mechanism. The quality of HDL subspecies may provide better markers of HDL functionality than does HDL-C alone. We aimed I) to study whether alterations in the HDL subspecies profile exist in low-HDL-C subjects II) to explore the relationship of any changes in HDL subspecies profile in relation to atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome; III) to elucidate the impact of genetics and acquired obesity on HDL subspecies distribution. SUBJECTS The study consisted of 3 cohorts: A) Finnish families with low HDL-C and premature CHD (Study I: 67 subjects with familial low HDL-C and 64 controls; Study II: 83 subjects with familial low HDL-C, 65 family members with normal HDL-C, and 133 controls); B) a cohort of 113 low- and 133 high-HDL-C subjects from the Health 2000 Health Examination Survey carried out in Finland (Study III); and C) a Finnish cohort of healthy young adult twins (52 monozygotic and 89 dizygotic pairs) (Study IV). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The subjects with familial low HDL-C had a lower preβ-HDL concentration than did controls, and the low-HDL-C subjects displayed a dramatic reduction (50-70%) in the proportion of large HDL2b particles. The subjects with familial low HDL-C had increased carotid atherosclerosis measured as intima-media-thickness (IMT), and HDL2b particles correlated negatively with IMT. The reduction in both key cholesterol acceptors, preβ-HDL and HDL2 particles, supports the concept of impaired reverse cholesterol transport contributing to the higher CHD risk in low-HDL-C subjects. The family members with normal HDL-C and the young adult twins with acquired obesity showed a reduction in large HDL2 particles and an increase in small HDL3 particles, which may be the first changes leading to the lowering of HDL-C. The low-HDL-C subjects had a higher serum apolipoprotein E (apoE) concentration, which correlated positively with the metabolic syndrome components (waist circumference, TG, and glucose), highlighting the need for a better understanding of apoE metabolism in human atherosclerosis. In the twin study, the increase in small HDL3b particles was associated with obesity independent of genetic effects. The heritability estimate, of 73% for HDL-C and 46 to 63% for HDL subspecies, however, demonstrated a strong genetic influence. These results suggest that the relationship between obesity and lipoproteins depends on different elements in each subject. Finally, instead of merely elevating HDL-C, large HDL2 particles and discoidal preβ-HDL particles may provide beneficial targets for HDL-targeted therapy.

A better understanding of vacuum arcs is desirable in many of today's 'big science' projects including linear colliders, fusion devices, and satellite systems. For the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) design, radio-frequency (RF) breakdowns occurring in accelerating cavities influence efficiency optimisation and cost reduction issues. Studying vacuum arcs both theoretically as well as experimentally under well-defined and reproducible direct-current (DC) conditions is the first step towards exploring RF breakdowns. In this thesis, we have studied Cu DC vacuum arcs with a combination of experiments, a particle-in-cell (PIC) model of the arc plasma, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the subsequent surface damaging mechanism. We have also developed the 2D Arc-PIC code and the physics model incorporated in it, especially for the purpose of modelling the plasma initiation in vacuum arcs. Assuming the presence of a field emitter at the cathode initially, we have identified the conditions for plasma formation and have studied the transitions from field emission stage to a fully developed arc. The 'footing' of the plasma is the cathode spot that supplies the arc continuously with particles; the high-density core of the plasma is located above this cathode spot. Our results have shown that once an arc plasma is initiated, and as long as energy is available, the arc is self-maintaining due to the plasma sheath that ensures enhanced field emission and sputtering. The plasma model can already give an estimate on how the time-to-breakdown changes with the neutral evaporation rate, which is yet to be determined by atomistic simulations. Due to the non-linearity of the problem, we have also performed a code-to-code comparison. The reproducibility of plasma behaviour and time-to-breakdown with independent codes increased confidence in the results presented here. Our MD simulations identified high-flux, high-energy ion bombardment as a possible mechanism forming the early-stage surface damage in vacuum arcs. In this mechanism, sputtering occurs mostly in clusters, as a consequence of overlapping heat spikes. Different-sized experimental and simulated craters were found to be self-similar with a crater depth-to-width ratio of about 0.23 (sim) - 0.26 (exp). Experiments, which we carried out to investigate the energy dependence of DC breakdown properties, point at an intrinsic connection between DC and RF scaling laws and suggest the possibility of accumulative effects influencing the field enhancement factor.

Sintering of titanium in its high temperature beta phase was studied by isothermal dilatometry. The sintering shrinkage y did not follow the normal time exponent type of behaviour, instead being described by the equation y = Kt(m)/[1-(A+Bt)(2)], where m = 1.93 +/- 0.07, with an activation energy of 62-90 kJ mol(-1). A detailed analysis of these results, based on the 'anomalous' diffusion behaviour reported for beta titanium, is carried out. It is shown that the generation of a high density of dislocations during the alpha --> beta phase transformation, coupled with sluggish recovery at the sintering necks, enables sintering mass transport by pipe diffusion through dislocation cores from sources of matter within the particles to become dominant.

he specific heats of EUNi(5)P(3), an antiferromagnet, and EuNi2P2, a mixed-valence compound, have been measured between 0.4 and 30 K in magnetic fields of, respectively, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2.5, 5, and 7 T, and 0 and 7 T. In zero field the specific heat of EuNi5P3 shows a h-like anomaly with a maximum at 8.3 K. With increasing field in the range 0-2.5 T, the maximum shifts to lower temperatures, as expected for an antiferromagnet. In higher fields the antiferromagnetic ordering is destroyed and the magnetic part of the specific heat approaches a Schottky anomaly that is consistent with expectations for the crystal-field/Zeeman levels. In low fields and for temperatures between 1.5 acid 5 K the magnetic contribution to the specific heat is proportional to the temperature, indicating a high density of excited states with an energy dependence that is very unusual for an antiferromagnet. The entropy associated with the magnetic ordering is similar to R In8, confirming that only the Eu2+-with J=7/2, S=7/2, L=0-orders below 30 R. In zero field approximately 20% of the entropy occurs above the Neel temperature, consistent. with the usual amount of short-range order observed in antiferromagnets. The hyperfine magnetic field at the Eu nuclei in EUNi(5)P(3) is 33.3 T, in good agreement with a value calculated from electron-nuclear double resonance measurements. For EuNi2P2 the specific heat is nearly field independent and shows no evidence of magnetic ordering or hyperfine fields. The coefficient of the electron contribution to the specific heat is similar to 100 mJ/mol K-2.

Thin films of barium strontium titanate (BST) including BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 end members were deposited using the metallo-organic decomposition (MOD) technique. Processing parameters such as nonstoichiometry, annealing temperature and time, film thickness and doping concentration were correlated with the structural and electrical properties of the films. A random polycrystalline structure was observed for all MOD films under the processing conditions in this study. The microstructures of the films showed multi-grains structure through the film thickness. A dielectric constant of 563 was observed for (Ba0.7Sr0.3)TiO3 films rapid thermal annealed at 750 degrees C for 60 s. The dielectric constant increased with annealing temperature and film thickness, while the dielectric constant could reach the bulk values for thicknesses as thin as similar to 0.3 mu m. Nonstoichiometry and doping in the films resulted in a lowering of the dielectric constant. For near-stoichiometric films, a small dielectric dispersion obeying the Curie-von Schweidler type dielectric response was observed. This behavior may be attributed to the presence of the high density of disordered grain boundaries. All MOD processed films showed trap-distributed space-charge limited conduction (SCLC) behavior with slope of similar to 7.5-10 regardless of the chemistry and processing parameter due to the presence of main boundaries through the film thickness. The grain boundaries masked the effect of donor-doping, so that all films showed distributed-trap SCLC behavior without discrete-traps. Donor-doping could significantly improve the time-dependent dielectric breakdown behavior of BST thin films, mostly likely due to the lower oxygen vacancy concentration resulted from donor-doping. From the results of charge storage density, leakage current and time-dependent dielectric breakdown behavior, BST thin films are found to be promising candidates for 64 and 256Mb ULSI DRAM applications. In order to understand the translational and rotational motion in dense molecular liquids, detailed molecular dynamics simulations of Lennard-Jones ellipsoids have been carried out for three different values of the aspect ratio kappa. For ellipsoids with an aspect ratio equal to 2, the product of the translational diffusion coefficient (D-T) and the average orientational correlation time of the l-th rank harmonics (tau(lR)), converges to a nearly constant value at high density. Surprisingly, this density independent value of D-T tau(lR) is within 5% of the hydrodynamic prediction with the slip boundary condition. This is despite the fact that both D-T and tau(lR) themselves change nearly by an order of magnitude in the density range considered, and the rotational correlation function itself is strongly nonexponential. For small aspect ratios (kappa less than or equal to 1.5), the rotational correlation function remains largely Gaussian even at a very large density, while for a large aspect ratio (kappa greater than or equal to 3), the transition to the nematic liquid-crystalline phase precludes the hydrodynamic regime. Thus, the rotational dynamics of ellipsoids show great sensitivity to the aspect ratio. At low density, tau(lR) goes through a minimum value, indicating the role of interactions in enhancing the rate of orientational relaxation. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics. The influence of mechanical activation on the formation of Bi2VO5.5 bismuth vanadate (BiV) phase, was investigated by ball-milling a stoichiometric mixture of bismuth oxide and vanadium pentoxide. The structural evolution of the desired BN phase, via an intermediate BiVO4,phase, was investigated using X-ray powder diffraction; (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Milling for 54h. yielded monophasic gamma-BiV powders with an average crystallite size of 30 nm. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) peaks associated with the V4+ ions are stronger and broader in nanocrystalline (n) BN than in the conventionally prepared microcrystalline (m) BN, suggesting theta significant portion of V5+ has been transformed to V4+ during milling. The optical bandgap of n-BiV was found to be higher than that of m-BiV. High density (97% of the theoretical density), fine-grained (average grain-size of 2 tun) ceramics with uniform grain-size distribution could be fabricated using n-BiV powders. These fine-grained ceramics exhibit improved dielectric, pyre and ferroelectric properties. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Binary and ternary blends of nylon-6/low density polyethylene (nylon-6/LDPE) and Nylon-6/LDPE/poly(ethylene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) were prepared by melt mixing. The blends exhibit two phase morphology with LDPE dispersed in the form of spherical domains in the nylon-6 matrix. The mechanical properties of the blends were measured by standard methods. It is shown that the use of the epoxy copolymer as a compatibilizer improves the impact strength of the blend as compared to nylon-6, which is attributed to better stress transfer across the interface due to the compatibilizer. The data for each mechanical property were also fitted into a best fit model equation and the method of steepest ascent was applied to arrive at the optimum composition of the blend for that property.

Fragility is viewed as a measure of the loss of rigidity of a glass structure above its glass transition temperature. It is attributed to the weakness of directional bonding and to the presence of a high density of low-energy configurational states. An a priori fragility function of electronegativities and bond distances is proposed which quite remarkably reproduces the entire range of reported fragilities and demonstrates that the fragility of a melt is indeed encrypted in the chemistry of the parent material. It has also been shown that the use of fragility-modified activation barriers in the Arrhenius function account for the whole gamut of viscosity behavior of liquids. It is shown that fragility can be a universal scaling parameter to collapse all viscosity curves on to a master plot.

Recently there is an increasing demand and extensive research on high density memories, in particular to the ferroelectric random access memory composed of 1T/1C (1 transistor/1 capacitor) or 2T/2C. FRAM's exhibit fast random acess in read/write mode, non - volatility and low power for good performance. An integration of the ferroelectric on Si is the key importance and in this regard, there had been various models proposed like MFS, MFIS, MFMIS structure etc., Choosing the proper insulator is very essential for the better performance of the device and to exhibit excellent electrical characteristics. ZrTiO4 is a potential candidate because of its excellent thermal stability and lattice match on the Si substrate. SrBi2Ta2O9 and ZrTiO4 thin films were prepared on p - type Si substrate by pulsed excimer laser ablation technique. Optimization of both ZT and SBT thin films in MFS and MFIS structure had been done based on the annealing, oxygen partial pressures and substrate temperatures to have proper texture of the thin films. The dc leakage current, P - E hysteresis, capacitance - voltage and conductance - voltage measurement were carried out. The effect of the frequency dependence on MFIS structure was observed in the C – V curve. It displays a transition of C - V curve from high frequency to low frequency curve on subjection to varied frequencies. Density of interface states has been calculated using Terman and high - low frequency C - V curve. The effect of memory window in the C - V hysteresis were analysed in terms of film thickness and annealing temperatures. DC conduction mechanism were analysed in terms of poole - frenkel, Schottky and space charge limited conduction separately on MFS, MIS structure.
