Y-Ba-Cu-O samples with additions of Y2O3 and CeO2 were quenched during seeded isothermal melt processing and examined by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Large YBa2Cu3O7-y (Y123) particles in the starting powder were found to form a distinct type of melt during heating, which was unaffected by the Y2O3 or CeO2 additives. This type of melt later formed regions with a low concentration of Y2BaCuO5 (Y211) particles in the Y123 matrix. The maximum growth rate of Y123 that could be sustained in the sample was found to be lower in the melt formed from large Y123 particles, and this may lead to growth accidents and subgrains in some samples.

Eight species of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi in the genera Amanita. Gymnoboletus, Lactarius, and Russula were isolated from subtropical plant communities in eastem Australia. Two species were isolated from each of rainforest, Nothofagus forest, Eucalyptus forest, and Eucalyptus dominated wallum (heath) forest. These communities differ strongly in their soluble soil nitrogen (N) composition. The ability of the fungi to use inorganic (nitrate, ammonium) and organic (amide, peptide, protein) nitrogen sources was determined. As the fungi did not grow in liquid culture, a 'floating culture' technique was devised that allows hyphal growth on a screen floating on liquid medium. With some exceptions, fungal biomass production in floating culture closely reflected fungal growth on solid media assessed by total colony glucosamine content. Most isolates grown in floating culture had similar glucosamine concentrations on all N sources, with isolate specific concentrations ranging from 6 to 12 mug glucosamine g(-1) DW. However, Russula spp. had up to 1.7-fold higher glucosamine concentrations when growing with glutamine or ammonium compared to nitrate, glutathione or protein. Floating cultures supplied with 0.5, 1.5. 4.5, or 10 mm N mostly produced greatest biomass with 4.5 mM N. In vitro nitrate reductase activity (NRA) ranged from very low (0.03 mumol NO2- g(-1) fw h(-1)) in Russula sp. (wallum) to high (2.16 mumol NO2- g(-1) fw h(-1)) in Gymnoboletus sp. (rainforest) and mirrored the fungi's ability to use nitrate as a N source. All Russula spp. (wallum, Nothofagus and Eucalyptus forests), Lactarills sp, (rainforest) and.4manita sp. (wallum) utilized ammonium and glutamine but had little ability to use other N sources. In contrast,Amanita species (Nothofagus and Eucalyptus forests) grew on all N sources but produced most biomass with ammonium and glutamine. Only Gymnoboletus sp. (rainforest) showed similar growth with nitrate and ammonium as N sources. Fungal N source use was not associated with taxonomic groups, but is discussed in the context of soil N sources in the different habitats.

The self-diffusion coefficients for water in a series of copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, HEMA, and tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate, THFMA, swollen with water to their equilibrium states have been studied at 310 K using PFG-NMR. The self-diffusion coefficients calculated from the Stejskal-Tanner equation, D-obs, for all of the hydrated polymers were found to be dependent on the NMR storage time, as a result of spin exchange between the proton reservoirs of the water and the polymers, reaching an equilibrium plateau value at long storage times. The true values of the diffusion coefficients were calculated from the values of D-obs, in the plateau regions by applying a correction for the fraction of water protons present, obtained from the equilibrium water contents of the gels. The true self-diffusion coefficient for water in polyHEMA obtained at 310 K by this method was 5.5 x 10(-10) m(2) s(-1). For the copolymers containing 20% HEMA or more a single value of the self-diffusion coefficient was found, which was somewhat larger than the corresponding values obtained for the macroscopic diffusion coefficient from sorption measurements. For polyTHFMA and copolymers containing less than 20% HEMA, the PFG-NMR stimulated echo attenuation decay curves and the log-attenuation plots were characteristic of the presence of two diffusing water species. The self-diffusion coefficients of water in the equilibrium-hydrated copolymers were found to be dependent on the copolymer composition, decreasing with increasing THFMA content.

The measurement of natural N-15 abundance is a well-established technique for the identification and quantification of biological N-2 fixation in plants. Associative N-2 fixing bacteria have been isolated from sugarcane and reported to contribute potentially significant amounts of N to plant growth and development. It has not been established whether Australian commercial sugarcane receives significant input from biological N-2 fixation, even though high populations of N-2 fixing bacteria have been isolated from Australian commercial sugarcane fields and plants. In this study, delta(15)N measurements were used as a primary measure to identify whether Australian commercial sugarcane was obtaining significant inputs of N via biological N-2 fixation. Quantification of N input, via biological N-2 fixation, was not possible since suitable non-N-2 fixing reference plants were not present in commercial cane fields. The survey of Australian commercially grown sugarcane crops showed the majority had positive leaf delta(15)N values (73% >3.00parts per thousand, 63% of which were

This article proposes a more accurate approach to dopant extraction using combined inverse modeling and forward simulation of scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM) measurements on p-n junctions. The approach takes into account the essential physics of minority carrier response to the SCM probe tip in the presence of lateral electric fields due to a p-n junction. The effects of oxide fixed charge and interface state densities in the grown oxide layer on the p-n junction samples were considered in the proposed method. The extracted metallurgical and electrical junctions were compared to the apparent electrical junction obtained from SCM measurements. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

This article examines the productivity performance of Australia's manufacturing sector by decomposing its output growth into input growth, technological progress and gains in technical efficiency. This three-way decomposition is done with an improved version of the stochastic frontier model using eight, two-digit industry level data from 1968/9 to 1994/5. Empirical evidence shows that input growth fueled output growth from 1968/9 to 1973/4, but since then, total factor productivity (TFP) growth has been the main contributor of output growth. While the trend of TFP growth was found to be promising for most industries with positive and increasing technological progress, the negative gains from technical efficiency over time is however cause for concern.

The paper presents methods for measurement of convective heat transfer distributions in a cold flow, supersonic blowdown wind tunnel. The techniques involve use of the difference between model surface temperature and adiabatic wall temperature as the driving temperature difference for heat transfer and no active heating or cooling of the test gas or model is required. Thermochromic liquid crystals are used for surface temperature indication and results presented from experiments in a Mach 3 flow indicate that measurements of the surface heat transfer distribution under swept shock wave boundary layer interactions can be made. This paper analyzes a dual economy consisting of urban market areas and less developed rural areas with or without local markets. Urban areas have better opportunities for earnings and education than rural areas. Rural families choose whether to move to urban areas at costs that differ from location to location. As per capita output grows relative to the moving cost, urbanization proceeds, leading to lower fertility, more investments in human and physical capital per child relative to output per worker, and faster economic growth. These impacts are stronger if rural areas have no access to markets.

Pearl millet landraces from Rajasthan, India, yield significantly less than improved cultivars under optimum growing conditions, but not under stressed conditions. To successfully develop a simulation model for pearl millet, capable of capturing such genotype x environment (G x E) interactions for grain yield, we need to understand the causes of the observed yield interaction. The aim of this paper is to quantify the key parameters that determine the accumulation and partitioning of biomass: the, light extinction coefficient, radiation use efficiency (RUE), pattern of dry matter allocation to the leaf blades, the determination of grain number, and the rate and duration of dry matter accumulation into individual grains. We used data on improved cultivars and landraces, obtained from both published and unpublished sources collected at ICRISAT, Patancheru, India. Where possible, the effects of cultivar and axis (main shoot vs. tillers) on these parameters were analysed, as previous research suggested that G x E interactions for grain yield are associated with differences in tillering habit. Our results indicated there were no cultivar differences in extinction coefficient, RUE, and biomass partitioning before anthesis, and differences between axes in biomass partitioning were negligible. This indicates there was no basis for cultivar differences in the potential grain yield. Landraces, however, produced consistently less grain yield for a given rate of dry matter accumulation at anthesis than did improved cultivars. This was caused by a combination of low grain number and small grain size. The latter was predominantly due to a lower grain growth rate, as genotypic differences in the duration of grain filling were relatively small. Main shoot and tillers also had a similar duration of grain filling. The low grain yield of the landraces was associated with profuse nodal tillering, supporting the hypothesis that grain yield was below the potential yield that could be supported by assimilate availability. We hypothesise this is a survival strategy, which enhances the prospects to escape the effects of stress around anthesis. (C) 2002 E.J. van Oosterom. Published by Elsevier Science B.V. The reasons for the spectacular collapse of so many centrally-planned economies are a source of ongoing debate. In this paper, we use detailed farm-level data to measure total factor productivity (TFP) changes in Mongolian grain and potato farming during the 14-year period immediately preceding the 1990 economic reforms. We measure TFP growth using stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) methods. Our results indicate quite poor overall performance, with an average annual TFP change of - 1.7% in grain and 0.8% in potatoes, over the 14-year period. However, the pattern of TFP growth changed substantially during this period, with TFP growth exceeding 7% per year in the latter half of this period. This suggests that the new policies of improved education, greater management autonomy, and improved incentives, which were introduced in final two planning periods in the 1980s, were beginning to have a significant influence upon the performance of Mongolian crop farming. Recent studies have shown that phox homology (PX) domains act as phosphoinositide-binding motifs. The majority of PX domains studied show binding to phosphatidylinositol 3-monophosphate (Ptdlns(3)P), an association that allows the host protein to localize to membranes of the endocytic pathway. One issue, however, is whether PX domains may have alternative phosphoinositide binding specificities that could target their host protein to distinct subcellular compartments or allow their allosteric regulation by phosphoinositides other than PtdIns(3)P. It has been reported that the PX domain of sorting nexin 1 (SNX1) specifically binds phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate (PtdIns(3,4,5)P-3) (Zhong, Q., Lazar, C. S., Tronchere, H., Sato, T., Meerloo, T., Yeo, M., Songyang, Z., Emr, S. D., and Gill, G. N. (2002) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 99,6767-6772). In the present study, we have shown that whereas SNX1 binds PtdIns(3,4,5)P-3 in protein:lipid overlay assays, in liposomes-based assays, binding is observed to PtdIns(3)P and phosphatidylinositol 3,5-bisphosphate (PtdIns(3,5)P-2) but not to PtdIns(3,4,5)P-3. To address the significance of PtdIns(3,4,5)P-3 binding, we examined the subcellular localization of SNX1 under conditions in which plasma membrane PtdIns(3,4,5)P-3 levels were significantly elevated. Under these conditions, we failed to observe association of SNX1 with this membrane. However, consistent with the binding to PtdIns(3)P and PtdIns(3,5)P-2 being of more physiological significance was the observation that the association of SNX1 with an early endosomal compartment was dependent on a 3-phosphoinositide-binding PX domain and the presence of PtdIns(3)P on this compartment. Finally, we somal association of SNX1 is important for its ability to regulate the targeting of internalized epidermal growth factor receptor for lysosomal degradation.

We use published and new trace element data to identify element ratios which discriminate between arc magmas from the supra-subduction zone mantle wedge and those formed by direct melting of subducted crust (i.e. adakites). The clearest distinction is obtained with those element ratios which are strongly fractionated during refertilisation of the depleted mantle wedge, ultimately reflecting slab dehydration. Hence, adakites have significantly lower Pb/Nd and B/Be but higher Nb/Ta than typical arc magmas and continental crust as a whole. Although Li and Be are also overenriched in continental crust, behaviour of Li/Yb and Be/Nd is more complex and these ratios do not provide unique signatures of slab melting. Archaean tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorites (TTGs) strongly resemble ordinary mantle wedge-derived arc magmas in terms of fluid-mobile trace element content, implying that they-did not form by slab melting but that they originated from mantle which was hydrated and enriched in elements lost from slabs during prograde dehydration. We suggest that Archaean TTGs formed by extensive fractional crystallisation from a mafic precursor. It is widely claimed that the time between the creation and subduction of oceanic lithosphere was significantly shorter in the Archaean (i.e. 20 Ma) than it is today. This difference was seen as an attractive explanation for the presumed preponderance of adakitic magmas during the first half of Earth's history. However, when we consider the effects of a higher potential mantle temperature on the thickness of oceanic crust, it follows that the mean age of oceanic lithosphere has remained virtually constant. Formation of adakites has therefore always depended on local plate geometry and not on potential mantle temperature.

We have developed a software application to enable interactive rehabilitation via the Internet. The reliability of the telemedicine application was examined by comparing it with face-to-face assessment. The physical outcome measures assessed were knee range of motion, quadriceps muscle strength, limb girth and an assessment of gait. One therapist performed both in-person and Internet-based measurements of all outcome measures on 20 normal subjects. There was good agreement between the two techniques (the 95% limits of agreement included zero for all the variables studied). Internet assessments were conducted at two bandwidths: ISDN at 128 kbit/s and the telephone network at 17 kbit/s. Bandwidth had no significant influence on any of the measures. This study suggests that Internet-based physiotherapy interventions delivered to the home are suitable for further development.
