Ruthenium, rhodium, and iridium piano stool complexes of the pentafluorophenyl-substituted diphosphine (C6F5)2PCH2P(C6F5)2 (2) have been prepared and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The Cp-P tethered complex [{(C5Me4CH2C6F4(C6F5)CH2P(C6F5)2}RhCl2] (9), in which only one phosphorus is coordinated to the rhodium, was prepared by thermolysis of a slurry of [Cp*RhCl(-Cl)]2 and 2 and was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The tethering occurs by intramolecular dehydrofluorinative coupling of the pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligand and P,P-coordinated 2. The geometric changes that occur on tethering force dissociation of one of the phosphorus atoms. The effects of introducing phosphine ligands to the coordination sphere of piano stool hydrogen transfer catalysts have been studied. The complexes of fluorinated phosphine complexes are found to transfer hydrogen at rates that compare favorably with leading catalysts, particularly when the phosphine and cyclopentadienyl functionalities are tethered. The highly chelating Cp-PP complex [(C5Me4CH2-2-C5F3N-4-PPhCH2CH2PPh2)RhCl]BF4 (1) was found to outperform all other complexes tested. The mechanism of hydrogen transfer catalyzed by piano stool phosphine complexes is discussed with reference to the trends in activity observed.

The preparation of porous films directly deposited onto the surface of catalyst particles is attracting increasing attention. We report here for the first time a method that can be carried out at ambient pressure for the preparation of porous films deposited over 3 mm diameter catalyst particles of silica-supported Pt-Fe. Characterization of the sample prepared at ambient pressure (i.e., open air, OA) and its main structural differences as compared with a Na-A (LTA) coated catalyst made using an autoclave-based method are presented. The OA-coated material predominantly exhibited an amorphous film over the catalyst surface with between 4 and 13% of crystallinity as compared with fully crystallized LTA zeolite crystals. This coated sample was highly selective for CO oxidation in the presence of butane with no butane oxidation observed up to 350 degrees C. This indicates, for the first time, that the presence of a crystalline membrane is not necessary for the difference in light off temperature between CO and butane to be achieved and that amorphous films may also produce this effect. An examination of the space velocity dependence and adsorption of Na+ on the catalysts indicates that the variation in CO and butane oxidation activity is not caused by site blocking predominantly, although the Pt activity was lowered by contact with this alkali.

Lewis acid complexes based on copper(II) and an imidazolium-tagged bis(oxazoline) have been used to catalyse the asymmetric Mukaiyama aldol reaction between methyl pyruvate and 1-methoxy-1-tri-methylsilyloxypropene under homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions. Although the ees obtained in ionic liquid were similar to those found in dichloromethane, there was a significant rate enhancement in the ionic liquid with reactions typically reaching completion within 2 min compared with only 55% conversion after 60 min in dichloromethane. However, this rate enhancement was offset by lower chemoselectivity in ionic liquids due to the formation of 3-hydroxy-1,3-diphenylbutan-1-one as a by-product. Supporting the catalyst on silica or an imidazolium-modified silica using the ionic liquid or in an ionic liquid-diethyl ether system completely suppressed the formation of this by-product without reducing the enantioselectivity. Although the heterogeneous systems were characterised by a drop in catalytic activity the system could be recycled up to five times without any loss in conversion or ee.

The present work emphasizes the importance of including a full quantitative analysis when in situ operando methods are used to investigate reaction mechanisms and reaction intermediates. The fact that some surface species exchange at a similar rate to the reaction product during isotopic transients is a necessary but not sufficient criterion for participation as a key reaction intermediate. This is exemplified here in the case of highly active low-temperature water-gas shift (WGS) catalysts based on gold and platinum. Operando DRIFTS data, isotopic exchanges, and DRIFTS calibration curves relating the concentration of formate species to the corresponding DRIFTS band intensity were combined to obtain a quantitative measure of the specific rate of formate decomposition. Despite displaying a rapid isotopic exchange rate (sometimes as fast as that of the reaction product CO2), the concentration of formates seen by DRIFTS was found to account for at most only 10% of the CO2 produced under the experimental conditions reported herein. These new results obtained on Au/CeZrO4 and Pt/CeO2 preparations (which are among the most active low-temperature WGS catalysts reported to date), led to the same conclusions regarding the minor role of IR-observable formates as those obtained in the case of less active Au/Ce(La)O-2 and Pt/ZrO2 catalysts. CO hydrogenation is used as a model system to understand why multiphase catalysts are chemically important in heterogeneous catalysis. By including both adsorption and subsequent surface reactions, kinetic equations are derived with two fundamental properties, the chemisorption energies of C and O (Delta H-C and Delta H-O, respectively). By plotting the activity against Delta H-C and Delta H-O, a 3-D volcano surface is obtained. Because of the constraint between Delta H-C and Delta H-O on monophase systems, a maximum can be achieved. However, if multiphase systems are used, such a constraint can be released and the global maximum may be achieved.

The comparative study of the voltammetry of H[NTf2], HCl and H[AuCl4] in [C(4)mim][NTf2] has provided an insight into the influence of protons on the reduction of [AuCl4](-) at Au, Pt or glassy carbon (GC) electrodes, and has allowed the identification of an unprecedented proton-induced electroless deposition of Au on relatively inert GC surfaces. For the first time, clear evidence of the quantitative formation of [HCl2](-) has been obtained in HCl/[C(4)mim][NTf2] mixtures, and the electrochemical behavior of these mixtures analyzed. In particular, a significant shift of the dissociation equilibrium toward the formation of chloride and the solvated proton (H-IL(+)), following electrochemical reduction of H-IL(+) has been observed in the time-scale of the experiments.

For the first time, the electrochemistry of gold has been studied in detail in a 'second-generation', non-haloaluminate, ionic liquid. In particular, the electrochemical behaviour of Na[AuCl4] has been investigated in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(tifluoromethyl)sulfonyl} imide, [C(4)mim][NTf2], over gold, platinum and glassy carbon working electrodes. The reduction of [AuCl4](-) initially forms [AuCl2](-) before deposition on the electrode as Au(0). To enable stripping of deposited gold or electrodissolution of bulk gold, the presence of chloride, trichloride or chlorine is required. Specifically trichloride and chlorine have been identified as the active species which preferentially form Au(I) and Au(III), respectively.

Multistep surface processes involving a number of association reactions and desorption processes may be considered as hypothetical one-step desorption processes. Thus, heterogeneous catalytic reactions can be treated kinetically as consisting of two steps: adsorption and desorption. It is also illustrated that the hypothetical one-step desorption process follows the BEP relation. A volcano curve can be obtained from kinetic analysis by including both adsorption and desorption processes.
