The TiO2 gel doped with UO22+ and Eu3+ has been prepared by a sol-gel method. The quenching of the UO22+ emission by Eu3+ and the energy transfer from the excited state of UO22+ to the ground state oh Eu3+ have been investigated. The energy transfer has been studied by the measurement of luminescence lifetime tau, calculations of energy transfer efficiency eta(ET) and energy transfer rate W-ET The experimental results indicated that the quenching is combined static and dynamic mechanism, but the static mechanism is dominant.

A novel functionalized inorganic-organic hybrid material with cation exchange property was prepared by sol-gel method. The H2O2 biosensor was fabricated by simply dipping the horseradish peroxidase-containing functionalized membrane modified electrode into Meldola's blue (MDB) solution. MDB was adsorbed and firmly immobilized within the membrane. The electrochemical behavior of MDB incorporated in the membrane was more reversible compared with that of the solution species and suitable as mediator for the horseradish peroxidase. The response time was less than 25 s. Linear range is up to 0.6 mM (COH. coeff. 0.9998) with detection Limit of 9 x 10(-7) M. High sensitivity of 75 nA mu M cm(-2) was obtained due to high MDB-loading. The biosensor exhibited a good stability. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel synthetic route to cyclic PEEK precursors is described. These new cyclic oligomers have been prepared from hydroquinone and N-phenyl(4,4'-difluorodiphenyl) ketimine. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis unambiguously confirmed the cyclic nature.

In-situ synthesis of terbium complex with salicylic acid (Sal) in silica matrix was made by a two-step sol-gel process. The terbium complex with salicylic acid was formed in sol-gel derived silica gel, and confirmed by the luminescence excitation spectra and infrared(IR) spectra. As compared to the pure terbium complex powder, the silica gel containing terbium complex exhibits its characteristic emission and presents a longer fluorescence lifetime than that for the pure complex. The luminescence properties of the complex containing;silica gel were investigated and compared with that of both terbium doped the silica gel and thp pure complex powder. The reasons leading to the above results were also discussed.

In-situ synthesis of europium and terbium complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) in silica matrix by a two-step sol-gel process has been proposed. The formation of europium and terbium complexes with phen in sol-gel derived silica gel were confirmed by the luminescence excitation spectra. The silica gels that contain in-situ synthesized europium and terbium complex exhibit the characteristic emission bands of the rare earth ions. Furthermore. the rare earth ions present longer fluorescence lifetimes than the comparable pure complex powder and the complexes dissolved in ethanol solutions. The luminescence properties of the silica gels codoped with europium (or terbium) and phen were also investigated with respect to the gels doped with europium (or terbium). (Y1-xEux)(3)Al5O12 and (Y1-x-yEuxBiy)(3)Al5O12 were prepared by so-gel method. Their structures of the luminophor are similar to that of YAG, which is recorded on the ASTM card and belongs to a cubic system. The luminescent properties show that the reaction temperature of the current sol-gel method is in the range of 400-500 degrees C, which is lower than that of the conventional solid state reaction. The luminophors have the strongest emission intensity when the values of x and y are 0.06 and 0.013, respectively.

1:1 complexes of beta-cyclodextrin (CD) with three amino acids (Gly, Phe and Trp) have been detected as ions in the gas phase using infusion positive and negative ion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In contrast with the positive ion ESI mass spectra of simple aqueous solutions, the aggregates and adducts usually formed in the ESI process did not appear in the positive ion ESI spectra of solutions buffered with ammonium acetate (NH4Ac), even at higher analyte concentrations, These studies suggest that addition of buffer and/or use of a low analyte concentration should be used to overcome formation of aggregates and metal ion adducts in such mass spectrometry studies. Also, the deprotonated complexes are dissociated by collision induced dissociation (CID) to form an abundant product ion, the deprotonated CD, requiring transfer of a proton to the amino acid carboxyl group, To understand formation of complexes in the gas phase, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to separate free amino acids (AAs) from complexes in an incubated solution. The ESI mass spectra of the GPC fractions show the presence of 1:1 complexes of both CD-aromatic amino acids and CD-aliphatic amino acids. Compared with CD-aliphatic amino acid complexes, CD-aromatic amino acid complexes appear to be destabilized in the gas phase, possibly because the hydrophobic interaction which binds the aromatic group of amino acids in the CD cavity in solution may become repulsive when solvent evaporates from the droplets during the electrospray process, whereas those complex ions formed as proton bound dimers are stabilized by electrostatic forces, the major binding force for such complexes in the gas phase. In addition, the GPC technique coupled with off-line ESI-MS can rapidly separate CD complexes by size, and provides some information on the character of the complexes in solution. Ternary complexes of europium and terbium with paraaminobenzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline (Eu(p-ABA)(3). phen . 2H(2)O and Tb(p-ABA)(3). phen . 2H(2)O, where p-HABA = paraaminobenzoic acid and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were introduced into a silica matrix by sol-gel method. The luminescence behavior of the complexes in silica gels was studied in comparison with the. corresponding solid-state complexes by means of emission, excitation spectra, and Lifetimes. Within the range of effective dopant concentrations, the luminescence intensities of rare-earth complexes in silica gel increase with the increasing of their dopant concentration. The lifetimes of rare-earth ions (Eu3+ and-Tb3+) in silica gel doped with europium and terbium complexes become longer than those in pure complexes. Very small amounts of rare-earth complexes doped in silica gel matrix can exhibit excellent luminescence properties, (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Cyclic voltammetry and in-situ microscopic FTIR spectroelectrochemistry were used for the electrochemical and vibrational characterizations of the reduction process of K3Fe (CN)(6) in polyethylene glycol(PEG) with LiClO4 as supporting electrolyte at a Pt microelectrode. The rate of electron transfer is a function of the concentration of the supporting electrolyte. The redox potentials and cyclic voltammetric currents vary with Li/O molar ratio. The bl-situ spectroelectrochemistry shows that the infrared spectra are influenced by the concentration of LiClO4. The bridging cyanide groups with a structure Fe-I-C drop N ... Fe-I-C drop N are formed during the reduction process of K3Fe (CN)(6). There may be an activated complex between the Lif cation and the complex anion.

In situ microscopic FTIR spectroelectrochemistry behavior of L-ascorbic acid (H(2)A) in polymer electrolyte is reported for the first time. H(2)A undergoes a two-step oxidation, The oxidation waves shift towards more anodic potential values when the scan rate increases. The peak currents of the oxidation waves are proportional to the square roots of scan rate up to 100 mV/s, The in situ infrared spectra suggest that the product of the oxidation be dehydroascorbic acid, which may exist as a dimer.

A new type of sol-gel organic-inorganic hybrid material was developed and used for the production of biosensors. This material is composed of silica sol and a grafting copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) with 4-vinylpyridine. It prevents the cracking of conventional sol-gel-derived glasses and eliminates the swelling of the hydrogel. The optimum composition of the hybrid material was first examined, and then glucose oxidase was immobilized in this matrix to demonstrate its application. The characteristics of the biosensor were studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The biosensor exhibited a series of good properties: high sensitivity (600 nA mmol(-1)L(-1)), short response time (11 s) and remarkable long-term stability in storage (at least 5 months). In addition, the characteristics of the second-generation biosensor with the use of tetrathiafulvalene as a mediator mere discussed.

A comb-like polymer host(CBPE) as polymer electrolyte was synthesized by reacting poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGME) with ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer(EMAC) and endcapping the residual carboxylic acid with methanol. The synthetic process was followed by IR and the amorphous product characterized by IR and elemental analysis. There were two peaks in the plot of the ionic conductivity against Li salt concentration. The plot of log sigma vs. 1/(T - T-0) may exhibit dual VTF behavior when using the glass transition temperature of PEO of side chain as T-0. The comb-like polymer is a white rubbery solid which dissolves in acetone. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The diffusion coefficients (D) of quinhydrone were estimated in polymer electrolytes by using non-steady-state chronoamperometry and steady-state current voltammetry. The D values have been estimated in polyethylene glycol (PEG) containing different concentrations, and cations of supporting electrolytes, and in different solvents over a range of temperatures. The dependencies of electroactive probe diffusion coefficients on temperature, supporting electrolyte concentration and polymer chain length are discussed. The results show that D increases with increasing temperature and decreasing concentration of supporting electrolyte. The diffusion coefficient depends strongly on the length of polymer chain and decreases sharply with increasing polymer chain length. The contribution of electron self-exchange has been explored and it seems to be negligible here. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
