Three seasons pass before asparagus can be harvested. In its first season of growth a crown forms with six inches of root. In the second season the crown grows a fern. The most popular use of pumpkins may be for jack-o-lanterns and fall decorations but they have many more uses. When selecting a pumpkin for cooking, the best selection is a “pie pumpkin” or “sweet pumpkin.” These are smaller than the large jack-o-lantern pumpkins and the flesh is sweeter and less watery. You can substitute the jack-o-lantern variety with fairly good results. Pumpkin seeds can be used in tossed salads, casseroles, soups, and other baked goods, either ground or whole. Although roasted pumpkin seeds tend to be better-tasting, you'll receive higher nutritional value from the raw seeds. So decorate your place with a pumpkin and make something. Strawberries are one of the healthiest fruits you can eat. They are a great source of Vitamin C. One serving of just eight strawberries will provide 140 % of the US Recommended Daily Allowance of Vitamin C. In a recent study, strawberries ranked second among the top ten fruits in antioxidant capacity (TAC), which is one reason why they may help prevent cancer and heart disease. It is widely assumed that living in rural Iowa means you live near a field of corn or soybeans. It is common to see large equipment during spring and fall and most people are aware that care should be given when using certain pesticides near these fields. In general, most everyone knows what to expect. Now there’s something new dotting the Iowa landscape . . . Vineyards! Like row crops, vineyards also use farm equipment and pesticides. We would like to take you on a written tour of what you might expect in a vineyard throughout our growing season. For a “real” tour, contact a local grape grower!

Survey Methodology: The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) Bureau of Horticulture provided USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Iowa Field office with a complete list of apple and grape growers expected to be in operation. These operations were mailed a questionnaire and a telephone follow-up of non-respondents was conducted. The survey data was edited for reasonableness, and then summarized using statistical software. There were 236 operators who reported they did own, lease or operate a grape vineyard in 2006. The same operators reported 538 acres of grapes.
