Get Access AbstractSuccess of Mediterranean dry areas restoration with oaks is a challenging goal. Testing eco-techniques that mimic beneficial effects of natural structures and ameliorate stress contributes to positive solutions to overcoming establishment barriers. We ran a factorial experiment in a dry area, testing two levels of solid wall transmission of tube shelters (60 and 80 %) plus a control mesh, and two depths (shallow and 15 cm depth) of placing either planted seedlings or acorns of Quercus ilex. Microclimate of the planting or sowing spots was characterized by measuring photosynthetically active radiation, temperature and relative humidity. Plant response was evaluated in terms of survival, phenology, acorn emergence and photochemical efficiency (measured through chlorophyll fluorescence). We hypothesize that tube shelters and deep planting improve Q. ilex post-planting and sowing performance because of the combined effects of reducing excessive radiation and improving access to moist soil horizons. Results show that temperature and PAR was reduced, and relative humidity increased, in deep spots. Midsummer photochemical efficiency indicates highest level of stress for oaks in 80 % light transmission shelter. Optimum acorn emergence in spring was registered within solid wall tree shelters, and maximum summer survival of germinants and of planted seedlings occurred when acorns or seedlings were placed at 15 cm depth irrespectively of light transmission of shelter. Survival of germinants was similar to that of planted seedlings. The importance of techniques to keep high levels of viability after sowing recalcitrant seeds in the field is emphasized in the study

The global economic structure, with its decentralized production and the consequent increase in freight traffic all over the world, creates considerable problems and challenges for the freight transport sector. This situation has led shipping to become the most suitable and cheapest way to transport goods. Thus, ports are configured as nodes with critical importance in the logistics supply chain as a link between two transport systems, sea and land. Increase in activity at seaports is producing three undesirable effects: increasing road congestion, lack of open space in port installations and a significant environmental impact on seaports. These adverse effects can be mitigated by moving part of the activity inland. Implementation of dry ports is a possible solution and would also provide an opportunity to strengthen intermodal solutions as part of an integrated and more sustainable transport chain, acting as a link between road and railway networks. In this sense, implementation of dry ports allows the separation of the links of the transport chain, thus facilitating the shortest possible routes for the lowest capacity and most polluting means of transport. Thus, the decision of where to locate a dry port demands a thorough analysis of the whole logistics supply chain, with the objective of transferring the largest volume of goods possible from road to more energy efficient means of transport, like rail or short-sea shipping, that are less harmful to the environment. However, the decision of where to locate a dry port must also ensure the sustainability of the site. Thus, the main goal of this article is to research the variables influencing the sustainability of dry port location and how this sustainability can be evaluated. With this objective, in this paper we present a methodology for assessing the sustainability of locations by the use of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and Bayesian Networks (BNs). MCDA is used as a way to establish a scoring, whilst BNs were chosen to eliminate arbitrariness in setting the weightings using a technique that allows us to prioritize each variable according to the relationships established in the set of variables. In order to determine the relationships between all the variables involved in the decision, giving us the importance of each factor and variable, we built a K2 BN algorithm. To obtain the scores of each variable, we used a complete cartography analysed by ArcGIS. Recognising that setting the most appropriate location to place a dry port is a geographical multidisciplinary problem, with significant economic, social and environmental implications, we consider 41 variables (grouped into 17 factors) which respond to this need. As a case of study, the sustainability of all of the 10 existing dry ports in Spain has been evaluated. In this set of logistics platforms, we found that the most important variables for achieving sustainability are those related to environmental protection, so the sustainability of the locations requires a great respect for the natural environment and the urban environment in which they are framed.

El concepto tradicional de reglas de ensamblaje refleja la idea de que las especies no co-ocurren al azar sino que están restringidos en su co-ocurrencia por la competencia interespecífica o por un filtrado ambiental. En está tesis abordé la importancia de los procesos que determinan el ensamble de la comunidad en la estructuración de los Bosques Secos en el Sur del Ecuador. Este estudio se realizó en la región biogeográfica Tumbesina, donde se encuentra la mayor concentración de bosques secos tropicales bien conservados del sur de Ecuador, y que constituyen una de las áreas de endemismo más importantes del mundo. El clima se caracteriza por una estación seca que va desde mayo a diciembre y una estación lluviosa de enero a abril, su temperatura anual varía entre 20°C y 26°C y una precipitación promedio anual entre 300 y 700 mm. Mi primer tema fue orientado a evaluar si la distribución de los rasgos funcionales a nivel comunitario es compatible con la existencia de un filtro ambiental (filtrado del hábitat) o con la existencia de un proceso de limitación de la semejanza funcional impuesta por la competencia inter-específica entre 58 especies de plantas leñosas repartidas en 109 parcelas (10x50m). Para ello, se analizó la distribución de los valores de cinco rasgos funcionales (altura máxima, densidad de la madera, área foliar específica, tamaño de la hoja y de masa de la semilla), resumida mediante varios estadísticos (rango, varianza, kurtosis y la desviación estándar de la distribución de distancias funcionales a la especies más próxima) y se comparó con la distribución esperada bajo un modelo nulo con ausencia de competencia. Los resultados obtenidos apoyan que tanto el filtrado ambiental como la limitación a la semejanza afectan el ensamble de las comunidades vegetales de los bosques secos Tumbesinos. Un segundo tema fue identificar si la diversidad funcional está condicionada por los gradientes ambientales, y en concreto si disminuye en los ambientes más estresantes a causa del filtrado ambiental, y si por el contrario aumenta en los ambientes más benignos donde la competencia se vuelve más importante, teniendo en cuenta las posibles modificaciones a este patrón general a causa de las interacciones de facilitación. Para abordar este estudio analizamos tanto las variaciones en la diversidad funcional (respecto a los de los cinco rasgos funcionales empleados en el primer capítulo de la tesis) como las variaciones de diversidad filogenética a lo largo de un gradiente de estrés climático en los bosques tumbesinos, y se contrastaron frente a las diversidades esperadas bajo un modelo de ensamblaje completamente aleatorio de la comunidad. Los análisis mostraron que tan sólo la diversidad de tamaños foliares siguió el patrón de variación esperado, disminuyendo a medida que aumentó el estrés abiótico mientras que ni el resto de rasgos funcionales ni la diversidad funcional multivariada ni la diversidad filogenética mostraron una variación significativa a lo largo del gradiente ambiental. Un tercer tema fue evaluar si los procesos que organizan la estructura funcional de la comunidad operan a diferentes escalas espaciales. Para ello cartografié todos los árboles y arbustos de más de 5 cm de diámetro en una parcela de 9 Ha de bosque seco y caractericé funcionalmente todas las especies. Dicha parcela fue dividida en subparcelas de diferente tamaño, obteniéndose subparcelas a seis escalas espaciales distintas. Los resultados muestran agregación de estrategias funcionales semejantes a escalas pequeñas, lo que sugiere la existencia bien de filtros ambientales actuando a escala fina o bien de procesos competitivos que igualan la estrategia óptima a dichas escalas. Finalmente con la misma información de la parcela permanente de 9 Ha. Nos propusimos evaluar el efecto y comportamiento de las especies respecto a la organización de la diversidad taxonómica, funcional y filogenética. Para ello utilicé tres funciones sumario espaciales: ISAR- para el nivel taxonómico, IFDAR para el nivel funcional y IPSVAR para el nivel filogenética y las contrastamos frente a modelos nulos que describen la distribución espacial de las especies individuales. Los resultados mostraron que en todas las escalas espaciales consideradas para ISAR, IFDAR y IPSVAR, la mayoría de las especies se comportaron como neutras, es decir, que están rodeados por la riqueza de diversidad semejante a la esperada. Sin embargo, algunas especies aparecieron como acumuladoras de diversidad funcional y filogenética, lo que sugiere su implicación en procesos competitivos de limitación de la semejanza. Una pequeña proporción de las especies apareció como repelente de la diversidad funcional y filogenética, lo que sugiere su implicación en un proceso de filtrado de hábitat. En este estudio pone de relieve cómo el análisis de las dimensiones alternativas de la biodiversidad, como la diversidad funcional y filogenética, puede ayudarnos a entender la co-ocurrencia de especies en diversos ensambles de comunidad. Todos los resultados de este estudio aportan nuevas evidencias de los procesos de ensamblaje de la comunidad de los Bosques Estacionalmente secos y como las variables ambientales y la competencia juegan un papel importante en la estructuración de la comunidad. ABSTRACT The traditional concept of the rules assembly for species communities reflects the idea that species do not co-occur at random but are restricted in their co-occurrence by interspecific competition or an environmental filter. In this thesis, I addressed the importance of the se processes in the assembly of plant communities in the dry forests of southern Ecuador. This study was conducted in the biogeographic region of Tumbesina has the largest concentration of well-conserved tropical dry forests of southern Ecuador, and is recognized as one of the most important areas of endemism in the world. The climate is characterized by a dry season from May to December and a rainy season from January to April. The annual temperature varies between 20 ° C and 26 ° C and an average annual rainfall between 300 and 700 mm. I first assessed whether the distribution of functional traits at the level of the community is compatible with the existence of an environmental filter (imposed by habitat) or the existence of a limitation on functional similarity imposed by interspecific competition. This analysis was conducted for 58 species of woody plants spread over 109 plots of 10 x 50 m. Specifically, I compared the distribution of values of five functional traits (maximum height, wood density, specific leaf area, leaf size and mass of the seed), via selected statistical properties (range, variance, kurtosis and analyzed the standard deviation of the distribution of the closest functional species) distances and compared with a expected distribution under a null model of no competition. The results support that both environmental filtering and a limitation on trait similarity affect the assembly of plant communities in dry forests Tumbesina. My second chapter evaluated whether variation in functional diversity is conditioned by environmental gradients. In particular, I tested whether it decreases in the most stressful environments because of environmental filters, or if, on the contrary, functional diversity is greater in more benign environments where competition becomes more important (notwithstanding possible changes to this general pattern due to facilitation). To address this theme I analyzed changes in both the functional diversity (maximum height, wood density, specific leaf area, leaf size and mass of the seed) and the phylogenetic diversity, along a gradient of climatic stress in Tumbes forests. The observed patterns of variation were contrasted against the diversity expected under a completely random null model of community assembly. Only the diversity of leaf sizes followed the hypothesis decreasing in as trait variation abiotic stress increased, while the other functional traits multivariate functional diversity and phylogenetic diversity no showed significant variation along the environmental gradient. The third theme assess whether the processes that organize the functional structure of the community operate at different spatial scales. To do this I mapped all the trees and shrubs of more than 5 cm in diameter within a plot of 9 hectares of dry forest and functionally classified each species. The plot was divided into subplots of different sizes, obtaining subplots of six different spatial scales. I found aggregation of similar functional strategies at small scales, which may indicate the existence of environmental filters or competitive processes that correspond to the optimal strategy for these fine scales. Finally, with the same information from the permanent plot of 9 ha, I evaluated the effect and behavior of individual species on the organization of the taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity. The analysis comprised three spatial summary functions: ISAR- for taxonomic level analysis, IFDAR for functional level analysis, and IPSVAR for phylogenetic level analysis, in each case the pattern of diversity was contrasted against null models that randomly reallocate describe the spatial distribution of individual species and their traits. For all spatial scales considering ISAR, IFDAR and IPSVAR, most species behaved as neutral, i.e. they are surrounded by the diversity of other traits similar to that expected under a null model. However, some species appeared as accumulator of functional and phylogenetic diversity, suggesting that they may play a role in competitive processes that limiting similarity. A small proportion of the species appeared as repellent of functional and phylogenetic diversity, suggesting their involvement in a process of habitat filtering. These analysis highlights that the analysis of alternative dimensions of biodiversity, such as functional and phylogenetic diversity, can help us understand the co-occurrence of species in the assembly of biotic communities. All results of this study provide further evidence of the processes of assembly of the community of the seasonally dry forests as environmental variables and competition play an important role in structuring the community.

The effect of the addition of a commercial enriched glutathione inactive dry yeast oenological preparation in the volatile and sensory properties of industrially manufactured rosé Grenache wines was evaluated during their shelf-life. In addition, triangle tests were performed at different times during wine aging (among 1 and 9 months) to determine the sensory differences between wines with and without glutathione inactive dry yeast preparations. Descriptive sensory analysis with a trained panel was carried out when sensory differences in the triangle test were noticed. In addition, consumer tests were performed in order to investigate consumers’ acceptability of wines. Results revealed significant sensory differences between control and glutathione inactive dry yeast wines after 9 months of aging. At that time, glutathione inactive dry yeast wines were more intense in fruity aromas (strawberry, banana) and less intense in yeast notes than control wine. The impact of the glutathione inactive dry yeast in the aroma might be the consequence of different effects that these preparations could induce in wine composition: modification of yeast byproducts during fermentation, release of volatile compounds from inactive dry yeast, interaction of wine volatile compounds with yeast macromolecules from inactive dry yeast and a possible antioxidant effect of the glutathione released by the inactive dry yeast preparation on some specific volatile compounds.

The study of functional morphological traits enables us to know fundamental aspects of the dynamics of plant communities in local and global habitats. Regenerative morphological traits play an important role in defining plant history and ecological behavior. Seed and fruit characteristics determine to a large extent the patterns for dispersal, germination, establishment and seedling recruitment a given species exhibits on its natural habitat. Despite their prominent role, seed and fruit traits have been poorly studied at the community level of woody plant species in neo-tropical dry forests. In the present study we aimed at i) evaluate the functional role of morphological traits of seeds, fruits and embryo in woody plant species; ii) determine which are the morphological patterns present in seeds collected from the community of woody species that occur in neo-tropical dry forests; and iii) compare woody plant species seed mass values comparatively between neo-tropical dry and tropical forests. To do so, mature seeds were collected from 79 plant species that occur in the Tumbesian forest of Southwest Ecuador. The studied species included the 42 and 37 most representative tree and shrubbery species of the Tumbesian forest respectively. A total of 18 morphological traits (seven quantitative and 11 qualitative) were measured and evaluated in the seeds, fruits and embryos of the selected species, and we compared the seeds mass with other forest types. Our results showed a huge heterogeneity among traits values in the studied species. Seed mass, volume and number were the traits that vary the most at the community level, i.e. seed length ranged from 1.3 to 39 mm, and seed width from 0.6 to 25 mm. Only six embryo types were found among the 79 plant species. In 40 % of the cases, fully developed inverted embryos with large and thick cotyledons to store considerable amount of nutrients were recorded. We concluded that highly variable and functionally complementary morphological traits occur among the studied woody plants of the dry Tumbesian forest. The latter favors a plethora of behavioral mechanisms to coexist among woody species of the dry forest in response to the environmental stress that is typical of arid areas.

Fungi that cause brown rot of wood are essential biomass recyclers and also the principal agents of decay in wooden structures, but the extracellular mechanisms by which they degrade lignocellulose remain unknown. To test the hypothesis that brown-rot fungi use extracellular free radical oxidants as biodegradative tools, Gloeophyllum trabeum was examined for its ability to depolymerize an environmentally recalcitrant polyether, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), that cannot penetrate cell membranes. Analyses of degraded PEOs by gel permeation chromatography showed that the fungus cleaved PEO rapidly by an endo route. 13C NMR analyses of unlabeled and perdeuterated PEOs recovered from G. trabeum cultures showed that a major route for depolymerization was oxidative C—C bond cleavage, a reaction diagnostic for hydrogen abstraction from a PEO methylene group by a radical oxidant. Fenton reagent (Fe(II)/H2O2) oxidized PEO by the same route in vitro and therefore might account for PEO biodegradation if it is produced by the fungus, but the data do not rule out involvement of less reactive radicals. The reactivity and extrahyphal location of this PEO-degrading system suggest that its natural function is to participate in the brown rot of wood and that it may enable brown-rot fungi to degrade recalcitrant organopollutants.

Hyaluronan (HA) plays an important role in lung pathophysiology. For this reason it has attracted great attention both as active ingredient and as excipient in treating lung diseases by direct pulmonary HA administration. The aim was the production of highly respirable and flowable HA powders either as a potential carrier for drug delivery or for being delivered directly by inhalation. Engineered sodium hyaluronate powders were produced by spray-drying technique. All the spray-dried powders were characterised in terms of particle size distribution, drug content, morphology and in vitro respirability. HA was successfully formulated with salbutamol sulphate in combination with leucine and highlighted remarkable aerodynamic performance (emitted dose equal to 83 % and FPF % equal to 97.1%). Moreover, HA colloidal solutions were designed and they were spray-dried. In order to improve particle aerodynamic characteristics, different types of excipients were investigated. In particular, stearylamine (5% w/w) allowed to obtain the best performance throughout the experimental set. Finally, in vitro biocompatibility was carried out by MTT assay and High Content Analysis for selected dry powder formulations and starting materials. The assays demonstrated the same outcome by confirming the HA biocompatibility and by producing the same rank of toxicity for the surfactants. The general conclusion of the project is that formulation containing HA and stearyl alcohol represents the best performing formulation.

Os fungos do gênero Metarhizium são entomopatogênicos e ainda apresentam relações endofíticas e podem viver saprofiticamente no solo. A associação desses microrganismos com insetos é bem conhecida, mas as interações diretas com as plantas ainda são incipientes. Objetivou-se com este estudo, determinar a capacidade de colonização endofítica em raízes de cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum spp.) de M. robertsii, M. anisopliae e três linhagens brasileiras recém-descobertas, bem como revelar o potencial destes fungos como antagonistas a dois fungos fitopatogênicos responsáveis pela podridão-vermelha (Fusarium moniliforme e Colletotrichum falcatum) e no controle de duas importantes pragas, a broca da cana-de-açúcar, Diatraea saccharalis e o nematóide-das-galhas, Meloidogyne javanica. Foram utilizados 24 isolados de Metarhizium spp. nos experimentos de promoção de crescimento de plantas após a inoculação em gemas de cana-de-açúcar em condições de casa-de-vegetação e campo. O efeito da inoculação do fungo em mudas de cana-de-açúcar foi investigado quanto a mortalidade e redução no desenvolvimento de D. saccharalis e redução nas populações de M. javanica. Experimentos de inibição in vitro em cultivo pareado foram conduzidos com os fungos F. moniliforme e C. falcatum e Trichoderma harzianum. Além disto, foram realizados testes qualitativos \"in vitro\" para avaliar a capacidade desses fungos em produzir β-1,3-Glucanase e Sideróforos. A inoculação de Metarhizium de todas as espécies testadas promoveu o crescimento de parte aérea, peso úmido e seco de raízes em relação ao controle (água). Enquanto o tratamento de gemas rotineiramente usado na usina onde se realizou a produção de mudas pré-brotadas com aplicação do fungicida Comet® + o fertilizante Biozyme TF resultou em pegamento de 32% e 59,6%, apenas com o uso de isolados de Metarhizium spp. estes valores foram de até 50% e 86,4%, nos dois experimentos em campo, respectivamente. As mortalidades observadas em lagartas de D. saccharalis que se alimentaram das plantas inoculadas com isolados de Metarhizium spp. atingiram valores de até 80%, sendo a mortalidade confirmada pela esporulação do fungo de até 55%. As lagartas sobreviventes apresentaram menor peso do que aquelas do controle não tratado. A inoculação de Metarhizium spp. em mudas de cana-de-açúcar conferiu proteção a M. javanica, resultando em uma densidade de massa de ovos por grama de raiz nas mudas inoculadas com o fungo até 59,8% menor no primeiro experimento e 64,1% menor no segundo em relação as mudas sem inoculação. Os ensaios de antagonismo mostraram que, todos os isolados de Metarhizium spp. apresentaram alguma forma de inibição tanto para F. moniliforme como para C. falcatum. Dos 24 isolados testados, 20,8% produziram a enzima hidrolítica, β-1,3-glucanase, o que pode estar associado a capacidade de inibição dos fungos fitopatogênicos. Constatou-se que 8 (33,3%) dos isolados produziram sideróforos e sugere que esses fungos apresentam mecanismos de disponibilização do ferro. O conhecimento gerado com este estudo poderá subsidiar novas estratégias de utilização de Metarhizium spp. em campo na produção de MPB de cana-de-açúcar.

This dissertation uses a political ecology approach to examine the relationship between tourism development and groundwater in southwest Nicaragua. Tourism in Nicaragua is a booming industry bolstered by ‘unspoiled’ natural beauty, low crime rates, and government incentives. This growth has led to increased infrastructure, revenue, and employment opportunities for many local communities along the Pacific coast. Not surprisingly, it has also brought concomitant issues of deeper poverty, widening gaps between rich and poor, and competition over natural resources. Adequate provisions of freshwater are necessary to sustain the production and reproduction of tourism; however, it remains uncertain if groundwater supplies can keep pace with demand. The objective of this research is to assess water supply availability amidst tourism development in the Playa Gigante area. It addresses the questions: 1) are local groundwater supplies sufficient to sustain the demand for freshwater imposed by increased tourism development? and 2) is there a power relationship between tourism development and control over local freshwater that would prove inequitable to local populations? Integrating the findings of groundwater monitoring, geological mapping, and ethnographic and survey research from a representative stretch of Pacific coastline, this dissertation shows that diminishing recharge and increased groundwater consumption is creating conflict between stakeholders with various levels of knowledge, power, and access. Although national laws are structured to protect the environment and ensure equitable access to groundwater, the current scramble to secure water has powerful implications on social relations and power structures associated with tourism development. This dissertation concludes that marginalization due to environmental degradation is attributable to the nexus of a political promotion of tourism, poorly enforced state water policies, insufficient water research, and climate change. Greater technical attention to hydrological dynamics and collaboration amongst stakeholders are necessary for equitable access to groundwater, environmental sustainability, and profitability of tourism.

The effect of surface chemistry (nature and amount of oxygen groups) in the removal of ammonia was studied using a modified resin-based activated carbon. NH3 breakthrough column experiments show that the modification of the original activated carbon with nitric acid, that is, the incorporation of oxygen surface groups, highly improves the adsorption behavior at room temperature. Apparently, there is a linear relationship between the total adsorption capacity and the amount of the more acidic and less stable oxygen surface groups. Similar experiments using moist air clearly show that the effect of humidity highly depends on the surface chemistry of the carbon used. Moisture highly improves the adsorption behavior for samples with a low concentration of oxygen functionalities, probably due to the preferential adsorption of ammonia via dissolution into water. On the contrary, moisture exhibits a small effect on samples with a rich surface chemistry due to the preferential adsorption pathway via Brønsted and Lewis acid centers from the carbon surface. FTIR analyses of the exhausted oxidized samples confirm both the formation of NH4+ species interacting with the Brønsted acid sites, together with the presence of NH3 species coordinated, through the lone pair electron, to Lewis acid sites on the graphene layers.

The influence of metal loading and support surface functional groups (SFG) on methane dry reforming (MDR) over Ni catalysts supported on pine-sawdust derived activated carbon were studied. Using pine sawdust as the catalyst support precursor, the smallest variety and lowest concentration of SFG led to best Ni dispersion and highest catalytic activity, which increased with Ni loading up to 3 Ni atoms nm-2. At higher Ni loading, the formation of large metal aggregates was observed, consistent with a lower "apparen" surface area and a decrease in catalytic activity. The H2/CO ratio rose with increasing reaction temperature, indicating that increasingly important side reactions were taking place in addition to MDR.

Purpose: To evaluate and characterize the clinical profile of young asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic patients without diagnosis of dry eye but showing signs compatible with dry eye syndrome (DES). Methods: Prospective study including a total of 50 consecutive subjects with ages ranging from 18 to 40 years that were identified as asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic by means of the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) (score of <22). In all patients, a complete battery of tests for the diagnosis of DES was performed including the evaluation of the tear film break-up time (TFBUT), the level of corneal and conjunctival staining, and the eyelid and Meibomian morphology. Results: The OSDI score was significantly higher in women than in men (median: 12.5 vs. 5.3, P=0.01). Low grades of ocular surface staining, dysfunction of Meibomian gland expression, and alteration of quality of Meibomian secretions were observed in 56%, 58%, and 84% of eyes, respectively. More eyes with some dysfunction of Meibomian gland expressibility had a TFBUT less than 5 sec (P=0.033). A statistically significant difference in the OSDI score was found between patients with and without systemic allergies (P=0.036) and between male and female (P=0.01). Likewise, the OSDI score was significantly higher in those women wearing contact lenses compared with those not wearing them (P=0.012). Conclusions: Asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic young subjects may present low grades of clinical signs compatible with DES, with a trend to more symptomatology in women and allergic patients. These outcomes should be confirmed in future studies with larger samples.
