A total of 36 tonsil swab samples were collected from healthy swine prior to slaughter at the abattoirs in Can tho and Tien giang provinces of Southern Vietnam, The presence of Pasteurella multocida in these samples was detected by the combination of direct cultivation and isolation, mouse inoculation and the polymerase chain reaction (PM-PCR). P. multocida was detected in 16 samples by PCR, with 17 strains ultimately isolated. All samples were negative for serogroup B by HSB-PCR and conventional serotyping, with isolates identified as A:3, D:1 or D:3. In addition, all samples were determined to be negative for the P. multocida toxin (PMT). Characterisation of isolated P, multocida by REP-PCR and biotyping revealed nine distinct REP profiles and seven biotypes among the 17 isolates. Some correlation was seen with P. multocida isolated from a previous Australian outbreak of acute swine pasteurellosis, and those isolated from fowl cholera outbreaks in Vietnamese poultry. Proteolysis-inducing factor (PIF) is a sulfated glycoprotein produced by cachexia-inducing tumors, which induces atrophy of skeletal muscle. PIF has been shown to bind specifically with high affinity (Kd, in nanomolar) to sarcolemma membranes from skeletal muscle of both the mouse and the pig, as well as murine myoblasts and a human muscle cell line. Ligand binding was abolished after enzymatic deglycosylation, suggesting that binding was mediated through the oligosaccharide chains in PIF. Chondroitin sulfate, but not heparan or dermatan sulfate, showed competitive inhibition (Kd, 1.1 × 10-7 mol/L) of binding of PIF to the receptor, suggesting an interaction with the sulfated oligosaccharide chains. Ligand blotting of [ 35S]PIF to triton solublized membranes from C2C 12 cells provided evidence for a binding protein of apparent M r of ∼40,000. Amino acid sequence analysis showed the PIF receptor to be a DING protein. Antisera reactive to a 19mer from the N-terminal amino acid residues of the binding protein attenuated protein degradation and activation of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway induced by PIF in murine myotubes. In addition, the antisera was highly effective in attenuating the decrease in body weight in mice bearing the MAC16 tumor, with a significant increase in muscle wet weight due to an increase in the rate of protein synthesis, together with a reduction in protein degradation through attenuation of the increased proteasome expression and activity. These results confirm that the PIF binding protein has a functional role in muscle protein atrophy in cachexia and that it represents a potential new therapeutic target. ©2007 American Association for Cancer Research.

We report on a Bragg grating written in an eccentric-cored polymer optical fibre for measurement of strain, bend and temperature. The strain sensitivity achieves 1.13 pm µe -1. The temperature response shows a negative sign with the thermal sensitivity of -50.1 pm ?C-1. For bend sensing, this device exhibits a strong fibre orientational dependence, wide bend curvature range of ±22.7 m-1 and a high bend sensitivity of 63.3 pm/m-1.

An optical fibre sensor system for humidity and temperature, comprising two Bragg gratings recorded in silica and polymer fibre, has been characterised. The response of this system is very well conditioned (2-norm condition number = 8.8) and consequently uncertainties in wavelength measurement do not lead to large errors in the recovered humidity and temperature.

Refractive index and structural characteristics of optical polymers are strongly influenced by the thermal history of the material. Polymer optical fibres (POF) are drawn under tension, resulting in axial orientation of the polymer molecular chains due to their susceptibility to align in the fibre direction. This change in orientation from the drawing process results in residual strain in the fibre and also affects the transparency and birefringence of the material (1-3). PMMA POF has failure strain as high as over 100%. POF has to be drawn under low tension to achieve this value. The drawing tension affects the magnitude of molecular alignment along the fibre axis, thus affecting the failure strain. The higher the tension the lower the failure stain will be. However, the properties of fibre drawn under high tension can approach that of fibre drawn under low tension by means of an annealing process. Annealing the fibre can generally optimise the performance of POF while keeping most advantages intact. Annealing procedures can reduce index difference throughout the bulk and also reduce residual stress that may cause fracture or distortion. POF can be annealed at temperatures approaching the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the polymer to produce FBG with a permanent blue Bragg wave-length shift at room temperature. At this elevated temperature segmental motion in the structure results in a lower viscosity. The material softens and the molecular chains relax from the axial orientation causing shrinking of the fibre. The large attenuation of typically 1dB/cm in the 1550nm spectral region of PMMA POF has limited FBG lengths to less than 10cm. The more expensive fluorinated polymers with lower absorption have had no success as FBG waveguides. Bragg grating have been inscribed onto various POF in the 800nm spectral region using a 30mW continuous wave 325nm helium cadmium laser, with a much reduced attenuation coefficient of 10dB/m (5). Fabricating multiplexed FBGs in the 800nm spectral region in TOPAS and PMMA POF consistently has lead to fabrication of multiplexed FBG in the 700nm spectral region by a method of prolonged annealing. The Bragg wavelength shift of gratings fabricated in PMMA fibre at 833nm and 867nm was monitored whilst the POF was thermally annealed at 80°C. Permanent shifts exceeding 80nm into the 700nm spectral region was attained by both gratings on the fibre. The large permanent shift creates the possibility of multiplexed Bragg sensors operating over a broad range. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. A dual-parameter optical sensor has been realized by UV-writing a long-period and a Bragg grating structure in D-fiber. The hybrid configuration permits the detection of the temperature from the latter and measuring the external refractive index from the former responses, respectively. The employment of the D-fiber allows as effective modification and enhancement of the device sensitivity by cladding etching. The grating sensor has been used to measure the concentrations of aqueous sugar solutions, demonstrating the potential capability to detect concentration changes as small as 0.01%.

In this paper we propose algorithms for combining and ranking answers from distributed heterogeneous data sources in the context of a multi-ontology Question Answering task. Our proposal includes a merging algorithm that aggregates, combines and filters ontology-based search results and three different ranking algorithms that sort the final answers according to different criteria such as popularity, confidence and semantic interpretation of results. An experimental evaluation on a large scale corpus indicates improvements in the quality of the search results with respect to a scenario where the merging and ranking algorithms were not applied. These collective methods for merging and ranking allow to answer questions that are distributed across ontologies, while at the same time, they can filter irrelevant answers, fuse similar answers together, and elicit the most accurate answer(s) to a question.

Wavelength bistability and tunability are demonstrated in a two-sectional quantum-dot mode-locked laser with a nonidentical capping layer structure. The continuous wave output power of 30 mW (25 mW) and mode-locked average power of 27 mW (20 mW) are achieved for 1245 nm (1295 nm) wavelengths, respectively, under the injection current of 300 mA. The largest switching range of more than 50 nm and wavelength tuning range with picosecond pulses and stable lasing wavelengths between 1245 and 1295 nm are demonstrated for gain current of 300 and 330 mA. © 1995-2012 IEEE.

In recent years, there has been an increas-ing interest in learning a distributed rep-resentation of word sense. Traditional context clustering based models usually require careful tuning of model parame-ters, and typically perform worse on infre-quent word senses. This paper presents a novel approach which addresses these lim-itations by first initializing the word sense embeddings through learning sentence-level embeddings from WordNet glosses using a convolutional neural networks. The initialized word sense embeddings are used by a context clustering based model to generate the distributed representations of word senses. Our learned represen-tations outperform the publicly available embeddings on 2 out of 4 metrics in the word similarity task, and 6 out of 13 sub tasks in the analogical reasoning task.
