Extensive ab initio calculations using a complete active space second-order perturbation theory wavefunction, including scalar and spin-orbit relativistic effects with a quadruple-zeta quality basis set were used to construct an analytical potential energy surface (PES) of the ground state of the [H, O, I] system. A total of 5344 points were fit to a three-dimensional function of the internuclear distances, with a global root-mean-square error of 1.26 kcal mol(-1). The resulting PES describes accurately the main features of this system: the HOI and HIO isomers, the transition state between them, and all dissociation asymptotes. After a small adjustment, using a scaling factor on the internal coordinates of HOI, the frequencies calculated in this work agree with the experimental data available within 10 cm(-1). Unlike humans, who communicate in frequency bands between 250 Hz and 6 kHz, rats can communicate in frequencies above 18 kHz. Their vocalization types depend on the context and are normally associated to subjective or emotional states. It was reported significant vocal changes due to administration of replacement testosterone in a trained tenor singer with hypogonadism. Speech-Language Pathology clinical practices are being sought by singers who sporadically use anabolic steroids associated with physical exercise. They report difficulties in reaching and keeping high notes, ""breakage"" in the passage of musical notes and post singing vocal fatigue. Those abnormalities could be raised by the association of anabolic steroids and physical exercise. Thus, in order to verify if this association could promote vocal changes, maximum, minimum and fundamental frequencies and call duration in rats treated with anabolic steroids and physically trained (10 weeks duration) were evaluated. The vocalizations were obtained by handling the animals. At the end of that period, rats treated and trained showed significant decrease in call duration, but not in other parameters. The decrease in call duration could be associated to functional alterations in the vocal folds of treated and trained animals due to a synergism between anabolic steroids and physical training. This paper presents a novel adaptive control scheme. with improved convergence rate, for the equalization of harmonic disturbances such as engine noise. First, modifications for improving convergence speed of the standard filtered-X LMS control are described. Equalization capabilities are then implemented, allowing the independent tuning of harmonics. Eventually, by providing the desired order vs. engine speed profiles, the pursued sound quality attributes can be achieved. The proposed control scheme is first demonstrated with a simple secondary path model and, then, experimentally validated with the aid of a vehicle mockup which is excited with engine noise. The engine excitation is provided by a real-time sound quality equivalent engine simulator. Stationary and transient engine excitations are used to assess the control performance. The results reveal that the proposed controller is capable of large order-level reductions (up to 30 dB) for stationary excitation, which allows a comfortable margin for equalization. The same holds for slow run-ups ( > 15s) thanks to the improved convergence rate. This margin, however, gets narrower with shorter run-ups (<= 10s). (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We have measured the spatial diffusion of atoms in a three-dimensional sigma(+)-sigma(-) optical molasses over twenty milliseconds timescale, starting from the initial interaction of the atoms with the molasses. We find that the diffusion constants agree well with a linear model for these short time scales and also compare favourably to other studies of diffusion made over longer time scales. These measurements enable us to quantify the detection method known as freezing molasses. We discuss this method, for detecting and measuring the momentum distribution of cold atoms, which relies on the slow diffusion of atoms in optical molasses to produce a freeze-frame of the spatial distribution of the atoms. This method enables a longer interrogation interval, providing a greatly increased signal-to-noise ratio. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Polymer hydrogels based upon methacrylates are used extensively in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly as controlled release drug delivery systems. These materials are generally prepared by chemically initiated polymerization, but this can lead to the presence of unwanted initiator fragments in the polymer matrix. In the present work, initiation of polymerization by gamma-irradiation of hydroxyethyl methacrylate, with and without added crosslinkers, has been investigated, and the diffusion coefficients for water in the resulting polymers have been measured through mass uptake by the polymers. The diffusion of water in poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) at 310 K was found to be Fickian, with a diffusion coefficient of 1.96 +/- 0.1 x 10(11) m(2) s(-1) and an equilibrium water content of 58%, NMR imaging analyses confirmed the adherance to a Fickian model of the diffusion of water into polymer cylinders. The incorporation of small amounts (0.2-0.5 wt%) of added ethyleneglycol-dimethacrylate-based crosslinkers was found to have only a small effect on the diffusion coefficient and the equilibrium water content for the copolymers. The bulk free radical copolymerizations of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) with n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) or cyclohexyl methacrylate (CHMA) were studied over the composition mole fraction interval of 0-1 for HEMA in the monomer feed. The C-13 NMR (125 MHz) spectra of the copolymers were analysed to determine the copolymer composition and the stereochemical configuration of the copolymers. The terminal model reactivity ratios of HEMA and BMA were found to be r(HEMA) = 1.73 and r(BMA) = 0.65 and for HEMA and CHMA, r(HEMA) = 1.26 and r(CHMA) = 0.31. The BMA and CHMA homopolymers were found to be predominantly syndiotactic with isotacticity parameters of theta(BB) = 0.18 and theta(CC) = 0.19, respectively. The copolymers were also found to be predominantly syndiotactic, indicating a strong tendency for racemic additions of the monomers in the formation of the copolymers. The diffusion of water into cylinders of poly(HEMA-co-BMA) and poly(HEMA-co-CHMA) was studied over a range of copolymer compositions and was found to be Fickian. The diffusion coefficients of water at 37 degrees C were determined from swelling measurements and were found to vary from 1.72 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for polyHEMA to 0.97 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for poly(HEMA-co-BMA) having a mole fraction F-HEMA = 0.80 and to 0.91 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for a poly(HEMA-co-CHMA) also having F-HEMA = 0.80. The mass of water absorbed at equilibrium relative to the mass of dry polymer varied from 58.8 for polyHEMA to 27.2% for poly(HEMA-co-BMA) having F-HEMA = 0.85 and to 21.3% for poly(HEMA-co-CHMA) having F-HEMA = 0.80. Some diverse indicators used to measure the innovation process are considered, They include those with art aggregate, and often national, focus, and rely on data from scientific publications, patents and R&D expenditures, etc. Others have a firm-level perspective, relying primarily on surveys or case studies. Also included are indicators derived from specialized databases, or consensual agreements reached through foresight exercises. There is an obvious need for greater integration of the various approaches to capture move effectively the richness of available data and better reflect the reality of innovation. The focus for such integration could be in the area of technology strategy, which integrates the diverse scientific, technological, and innovation activities of firms within their operating environments; improved capacity to measure it has implications for policy-makers, managers and researchers.

N,N-dimethyl-pyrrolidinium iodide has been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, second moment calculations, and impedance spectroscopy. This pyrrolidinium salt exhibits two solid-solid phase transitions, one at 373 K having an entropy change, Delta S, of 38 J mol(-1) K-1 and one at 478 K having Delta S of 5.7 J mol(-1) K-1. The second moment calculations relate the lower temperature transition to a homogenization of the sample in terms of the mobility of the cations, while the high temperature phase transition is within the temperature region of isotropic tumbling of the cations. At higher temperatures a further decrease in the H-1 NMR linewidth is observed which is suggested to be due to diffusion of the cations. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

1. Drug delivery through the skin has been used to target the epidermis, dermis and deeper tissues and for systemic delivery, The major barrier for the transport of drugs through the skin is the stratum corneum, with most transport occurring through the intercellular region, The polarity of the intercellular region appears to be similar to butanol, with the diffusion of solutes being hindered by saturable hydrogen bonding to the polar head groups of the ceramides, fatty acids and other intercellular lipids, Accordingly, the permeability of the more lipophilic solutes is greatest from aqueous solutions, whereas polar solute permeability is favoured by hydrocarbon-based vehicles. 2. The skin is capable of metabolizing many substances and, through its microvasculature, limits the transport of most substances into regions below the dermis. 3. Although the flux of solutes through the skin should be identical for different vehicles when the solute exists as a saturated solution, the fluxes vary in accordance with the skin penetration enhancement properties of the vehicle. It is therefore desirable that the regulatory standards required for the bioequivalence of topical products include skin studies. 4. Deep tissue penetration can be related to solute protein binding, solute molecular size and dermal blood flow. 5. Iontophoresis is a promising area of skin drug delivery, especially for ionized solutes and when a rapid effect is required. 6. In general, psoriasis and other skin diseases facilitate drug delivery through the skin. 7. It is concluded that the variability in skin permeability remains an obstacle in optimizing drug delivery by this route.

Pfaffia paniculata (Brazilian ginseng) roots and/or its extracts have shown anti-neoplastic, chemopreventive, and anti-angiogenic properties. The aim of this work was to investigate the chemopreventive mechanisms of this root in Mice Submitted to the infant model of hepatocarcinogenesis, evaluating the effects oil cellular proliferation, apoptosis. and intercellular communication. Fifteen-day-old BALB/c male mice were given, i.p., 10 mu g/g of the carcinogen N-nitrosodiethylamine (DEN). Animals were separated into three groups at weaning and were given different concentrations of powdered P. paniculata root (0%, 2%, or 10%) added to commercial food for 27 weeks. Control group (CT) was not exposed to the carcinogen and was given ration without the root. After euthanasia, the animals` liver and body weight were measured. Liver fragments were sampled to Study intercellular communication, molecular biology, and histopathological analysis. Cellular proliferation was evaluated by immunohistochemistry for PCNA, apoptosis was evaluated by apoptotic bodies count and alkaline cornet technique, and inter-cellular communication by diffusion of lucifer yellow dye, immunofluorescence, western blot and real-time PCR for connexins 26 and 32. Chronic treatment with powdered P. paniculata root reduced cellular proliferation and increased apoptosis in the 2%, group. Animals in the 10% group had an increase in apoptosis with chronic inflammatory process. Intercellular communication showed no alterations in any of the groups analyzed. These results Indicate that chemopreventive effects of P. paniculata are related to the control of cellular proliferation and apoptosis, but not to cell communication and/or connexin expression, and are directly Influenced by the root concentration. The diffusion of water into a series of hydroxyethyl methacrylate, HEMA, copolymers with tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate, THFMA, has been studied over a range of copolymer compositions using NMR imaging analyses. For polyHEMA the diffusion was found to be consistent with a Fickian model. The mass diffusion coefficient of water in polyHEMA at 37 degreesC was determined from the profiles of the diffusion front to be 1.5 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1), which is less than the value based upon mass uptake, 2.0 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1). The profiles of the water diffusion front obtained from the NMR images showed that stress was induced at the interface between the rubbery and glassy regions which led to formation of small cracks in this region of the glassy matrix of polyHEMA and its copolymers with mole fractions of HEMA greater than 0.6. Water was shown to be able to enter these cracks forming water pools. For copolymers of HEMA and THFMA with mole fractions of HEMA less than 0.6 the absence of cracks was attributed to the ability of the THFMA sequences to undergo stress relaxation by creep.

The Antarctic nemertean worm, Parborlasia corrugatus, exhibits gigantism, reaching at least 100 g, yet lacks any specialised respiratory organs. The diffusion of oxygen into this worm occurs cutaneously. We examined the metabolic rate of P. corrugatus at -1degreesC in response to decreasing ambient PO2. As the PO2 of the water decreased. so did the metabolic rate of P. corrugatus, indicating that this nemertean worm is an extreme example of an oxyconformer. When the water PO2 decreased below about 120 mmHg, the normally short, round worms became elongated and extremely flattened. This behavioural mechanism would allow for an increase in surface area of the skin, thereby facilitating the diffusion of oxygen.

This comparative history examines the importance of notions of credit and honour in new definitions of masculinity that gained ground in New South Wales and the Cape Colony in the 1830s. The argument draws on an analysis of two defamation actions brought by auctioneers in this period and discusses the role of masculine occupation in colonial bourgeois identity. The diffusion of a culture of respectability through the British Empire was a global phenomenon, and a necessary precursor to the establishment of representative political institutions in the colonies by the middle of the nineteenth century.

The fate of N-15-nitrogen-enriched formulated feed fed to shrimp was traced through the food web in shallow, outdoor tank systems (1000 1) stocked with shrimp. Triplicate tanks containing shrimp water with and without sediment were used to identify the role of the natural biota in the water column and sediment in processing dietary nitrogen (N). A preliminary experiment demonstrated that N-15-nitrogen-enriched feed products could be detected in the food web. Based on this, a 15-day experiment was conducted. The ammonium (NH4+) pool in the water column became rapidly enriched (within one day) with N-15-nitrogen after shrimp were fed N-15-enriched feed. By day 15, 6% of the added N-15-nitrogen was in this fraction in the 'sediment' tanks compared with 0.4% in the 'no sediment' tanks. The particulate fraction in the water column, principally autotrophic nanoflagellates, accounted for 4-5% of the N-15-nitrogen fed to shrimp after one day. This increased to 16% in the 'no sediment' treatment, and decreased to 2% in the 'sediment' treatment by day 15. It appears that dietary N was more accessible to the phytoplankton community in the absence of sediment. The difference is possibly because a proportion of the dietary N was buried in the sediment in the 'sediment' treatment, making it unavailable to the phytoplankton. Alternatively, the dietary N was retained in the NH4+ pool in the water column since phytoplankton growth, and hence, N utilization was lower in the 'sediment' treatment. The lower growth of phytoplankton in the 'sediment' treatment appeared to be related to higher turbidity, and hence, lower light availability for growth. The percentage N-15-nitrogen detected in the sediment was only 6% despite the high capacity for sedimentation of the large biomass of plankton detritus and shrimp waste. This suggests rapid remineralization of organic waste by the microbial community in the sediment resulting in diffusion of inorganic N sources into the water column. It is likely that most of the dietary N will ultimately be removed from the tank system by water discharges. Our study showed that N-15-nitrogen derived from aquaculture feed can be processed by the microbial community in outdoor aquaculture systems and provides a method for determining the effect of dietary N on ecosystems. However, a significant amount of the dietary N was not retained by the natural biota and is likely to be present in the soluble organic fraction. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Most considerations of knowledge management focus on corporations and, until recently, considered knowledge to be objective, stable, and asocial. In this paper we wish to move the focus away from corporations, and examine knowledge and national innovation systems. We argue that the knowledge systems in which innovation takes place are phenomenologically turbulent, a state not made explicit in the change, innovation and socio-economic studies of knowledge literature, and that this omission poses a serious limitation to the successful analysis of innovation and knowledge systems. To address this lack we suggest that three evolutionary processes must be considered: self-referencing, self-transformation and self-organisation. These processes, acting simultaneously, enable system cohesion, radical innovation and adaptation. More specifically, we argue that in knowledge-based economies the high levels of phenomenological turbulence drives these processes. Finally, we spell out important policy principles that derive from these processes.
