Fordyce granules of the oral mucosa are often discovered during routine dental examinations. They are considered anatomic variations and are typically seen on the labial and buccal mucosa in adults. The present case report describes for the first time in the literature an atypical location of an enlarged Fordyce granule with local bone destruction. The diagnostic process, surgical treatment, and follow-up are presented and discussed.

Researchers have claimed that high quality of supervisor–employee relationships (i.e., leader– member exchange; LMX) fosters creativity at work. Moreover, researchers have acknowledged that this relationship is not clear-cut but rather complex. The present study focused on the moderating role of job autonomy in the LMX-creative work involvement relationship. Longitu-dinal field survey data (N = 144) collected in a high-technology firm revealed a positive asso-ciation between LMX and creative work involvement and confirmed our assumptions on the moderating role of job autonomy. The positive relationship between LMX and creative work involvement was stronger when employees experienced greater job autonomy. Our findings point to the importance of considering the interplay of both, the leader–member relationship and job design issues for increasing employees' creative work involvement.

Human capital and members of the creative class are bearers of economic growth, yet little is known about exactly what the relevant factors are for the concentration of the highly skilled in a specific place. Tolerance for example is supposed to make the difference between creative and human capital. But does tolerance really make a difference for anybody? And what about other factors: Are they specifically relevant for creative individuals or simply valid for the whole population? This study contributes to the discussion on the highly skilled by investigating whether tolerance, taxes, or other regional amenities contribute to their concentration and dynamics. The results show that tolerance in particular toward immigrants, but also toward same-sex partnerships, is a rather dynamic concept, differs largely between and within functional urban regions, and makes a difference regarding the highly skilled.

Games that simulate complex realities to be dealt with in teams are an effective tool for fostering interactive learning processes. they link different levels of decision-making in the household, community and societal contexts. Negotiation and harmonisation of different perceptions and interests, be it within or between different households, form the basis of a common strategy for sustainable development.

Cell-cell intercalation is used in several developmental processes to shape the normal body plan. There is no clear evidence that intercalation is involved in pathologies. Here we use the proto-oncogene myc to study a process analogous to early phase of tumour expansion: myc-induced cell competition. Cell competition is a conserved mechanism driving the elimination of slow-proliferating cells (so-called 'losers') by faster-proliferating neighbours (so-called 'winners') through apoptosis and is important in preventing developmental malformations and maintain tissue fitness. Here we show, using long-term live imaging of myc-driven competition in the Drosophila pupal notum and in the wing imaginal disc, that the probability of elimination of loser cells correlates with the surface of contact shared with winners. As such, modifying loser-winner interface morphology can modulate the strength of competition. We further show that elimination of loser clones requires winner-loser cell mixing through cell-cell intercalation. Cell mixing is driven by differential growth and the high tension at winner-winner interfaces relative to winner-loser and loser-loser interfaces, which leads to a preferential stabilization of winner-loser contacts and reduction of clone compactness over time. Differences in tension are generated by a relative difference in F-actin levels between loser and winner junctions, induced by differential levels of the membrane lipid phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate. Our results establish the first link between cell-cell intercalation induced by a proto-oncogene and how it promotes invasiveness and destruction of healthy tissues.

When a tree is chopped to bits, or a sweater unraveled, its matter still exists. Since antiquity, it has sometimes been inferred that nothing really has been destroyed: what has happened is just that this matter has assumed new form. Contemporary versions hold that apparent destruction of a familiar object is just rearrangement of microparticles or of 'physical simples' or 'world stuff'. But if destruction of a familiar object is genuinely to be reduced to mere alteration of something else, we must identify an alternation proper to the career, the course of existence, of this something else; relatedly, the alteration must be characterizable without asserting the existence of the familiar object. All contemporary views fail one of these requirements.

Osteosarcoma, a malignant bone tumor, rapidly destroys the cortical bone. We demonstrated that mouse K7M2 osteosarcoma cells were deficient in osterix (osx), a zinc finger-containing transcription factor required for osteoblasts differentiation and bone formation. These cells formed lytic tumors when injected into the tibia. The destruction of bone is mediated by osteoclasts in osteosarcoma. The less expression of osterix with osteolytic phenotype was also observed in more tumor cell lines. Replacement of osterix in K7M2 cells suppressed lytic bone destruction, inhibited tumor growth in vitro and in vivo, and suppressed lung metastasis in vivo and the migration of K7M2 to lung conditioned medium in vitro. By contrast, inhibiting osterix by vector-based small interfering RNA (siRNA) in two cell lines (Dunn and DLM8) that expressed high levels of osterix converted osteoblastic phenotype to lytic. Recognizing and binding of Receptor Activator of NF-κB (RANK) on osteoclast precursors by its ligand RANKL is the key osteoclastogenic event. Increased RANKL results in more osteoclast activity. We investigated whether K7M2-mediated bone destruction was secondary to an effect on RANKL. The conditioned medium from K7M2 could upregulate RANKL in normal osteoblast MC3T3, which might lead to more osteoclast formation. By contrast, the conditioned medium from K7M2 cells transfected with osx-expressing plasmid did not upregulate RANKL. Furthermore, Interleukin-1alpha (IL-1α) was significantly suppressed following osx transfection. IL-1α increased RANKL expression in MC3T3 cells, suggesting that osx may control RANKL via a mechanism involving IL-1α. Using a luciferase reporter assay, we demonstrated that osx downregulated IL-1α through a transcription-mediated mechanism. Following suppression of osterix in Dunn and DLM8 cells led to enhanced IL-1α promoter activity and protein production. Site-directed mutagenesis and Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) indicated that osterix downregulated IL-1α through a Sp1-binding site on the IL-1α promoter. These data suggest that osterix is involved in the lytic phenotype of osteosarcoma and that this is mediated via transcriptional repression of IL-1α. ^

InGen of Creative Production in the Health Sciences is a compendium of innovative thinking exercises for individuals and groups, derived from an eclectic array of practical guides for professionals in a variety of fields. Segmented into five subcategories across twenty two chapters, the effort seeks to make techniques for increasing innovative problem solving more accessible to a diverse audience of problem solvers. The chapters of Roberta Ness. Innovation Generation (2012, Oxford University Press) provide the themes for each of the chapters in the workbook. It is intended that those who read Ness. Innovation Generation will benefit from practicing the constructs of innovative thinking exemplified in each exercise.^ The methods used to gather data, in this case mostly innovative thinking exercises, included literature reviews of existing innovative thinking tools, classroom materials, and theory-driven exploration of exercises to fill in gaps in extant materials. Specifically, Google.com and Amazon.com searches were conducted using the terms “innovation,” “innovative,” “innovator,” “creative,” “novelty,” “thinking,” together with some variance of “book,” “workbook,” and “exercise.” The results were sorted thematically to show correspondence with the themes in Ness (2012) and compared to suggested best practices of 50 years of scientific research on innovative thinking. Where themes were suggested by Ness (2012) and peer-reviewed research on innovation but unavailable in published innovation thinking workbooks, new exercises were developed. The five type subcategories into which these results were organized are: individual direct, individual indirect, group direct, group indirect and probing question. It is anticipated that the five type subcategories and spectrum of themes will equip problem solvers in a variety of capacities.^

Cenozoic planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy at DSDP-IPOD Leg 80 sites documents the existence of regionwide stratigraphic gaps in the Paleocene and middle Miocene. Episodes of carbonate dissolution also occurred during the Paleocene at several sites, particularly at Site 549, where destruction of foraminiferal tests may obscure evidence of an unconformity. The middle Miocene hiatus is apparent at each site where Neogene sediments were continuously cored. Upper Miocene sediments at Site 550 (the only abyssal site) are characterized by moderate to extensive dissolution of planktonic foraminifers, but they contain abundant specimens of Bolboforma that mark this stratigraphic interval (von Daniels and Spiegler, 1974, doi:10.1007/BF02986990; Roegl, 1976, doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.35.133.1976; Murray, 1979, doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.48.116.1979; Müller et al., 1985, doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.80.117.1985). Although foraminiferal evidence is not conclusive, nannofossils indicate a widespread Oligocene unconformity (Müller, 1985). Several oceanographic factors, not just simple sea-level change, probably interacted to produce these regional unconformities. There are also dramatic differences in the Cenozoic sedimentary record among Leg 80 sites, indicating that each has had a distinct geologic history. The thickness of the Cenozoic section varies from 100 m at Site 551 to 471 m at Site 548. The thickness of individual chronostratigraphic units also varies, as do the number and stratigraphic position of unconformities other than those mentioned. Differences in the stratigraphic record from site to site across the continental slope result from (1) location in separate half-graben structures, (2) varying location across the developing margin, and (3) difference in position relative to the seaward edge of the enclosing half-graben. Except for turbidites, deposition at Site 550 (abyssal) was largely independent of developments on the continental slope; but it was affected by oceanographic events widespread in the North Atlantic.

Vertical distribution of organic phosphorus and phosphatase activity was studied in the Southeast Pacific Ocean. The average rate of mineralization of organic phosphorus in the 0-200 m layer was shown to differ by a factor of 5-10 in oligotrophic and eutrophic areas, while residence time of phosphorus in production-destruction cycles differed by a factor of only 2-5, apparently because of both concentration of organic phosphorus and phosphorolysis rate increased simultaneously in the areas.
