Purpose: To evaluate whether the correlation between in vitro bond strength data and estimated clinical retention rates of cervical restorations after two years depends on pooled data obtained from multicenter studies or single-test data. Materials and Methods: Pooled mean data for six dentin adhesive systems (Adper Prompt L-Pop, Clearfil SE, OptiBond FL, Prime & Bond NT, Single Bond, and Scotchbond Multipurpose) and four laboratory methods (macroshear, microshear, macrotensile and microtensile bond strength test) (Scherrer et al, 2010) were correlated to estimated pooled two-year retention rates of Class V restorations using the same adhesive systems. For bond strength data from a single test institute, the literature search in SCOPUS revealed one study that tested all six adhesive systems (microtensile) and two that tested five of the six systems (microtensile, macroshear). The correlation was determined with a database designed to perform a meta-analysis on the clinical performance of cervical restorations (Heintze et al, 2010). The clinical data were pooled and adjusted in a linear mixed model, taking the study effect, dentin preparation, type of isolation and bevelling of enamel into account. A regression analysis was carried out to evaluate the correlation between clinical and laboratory findings. Results: The results of the regression analysis for the pooled data revealed that only the macrotensile (adjusted R2 = 0.86) and microtensile tests (adjusted R2 = 0.64), but not the shear and the microshear tests, correlated well with the clinical findings. As regards the data from a single-test institute, the correlation was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Macrotensile and microtensile bond strength tests showed an adequate correlation with the retention rate of cervical restorations after two years. Bond strength tests should be carried out by different operators and/or research institutes to determine the reliability and technique sensitivity of the material under investigation.

In vivo dosimetry is a way to verify the radiation dose delivered to the patient in measuring the dose generally during the first fraction of the treatment. It is the only dose delivery control based on a measurement performed during the treatment. In today's radiotherapy practice, the dose delivered to the patient is planned using 3D dose calculation algorithms and volumetric images representing the patient. Due to the high accuracy and precision necessary in radiation treatments, national and international organisations like ICRU and AAPM recommend the use of in vivo dosimetry. It is also mandatory in some countries like France. Various in vivo dosimetry methods have been developed during the past years. These methods are point-, line-, plane- or 3D dose controls. A 3D in vivo dosimetry provides the most information about the dose delivered to the patient, with respect to ID and 2D methods. However, to our knowledge, it is generally not routinely applied to patient treatments yet. The aim of this PhD thesis was to determine whether it is possible to reconstruct the 3D delivered dose using transmitted beam measurements in the context of narrow beams. An iterative dose reconstruction method has been described and implemented. The iterative algorithm includes a simple 3D dose calculation algorithm based on the convolution/superposition principle. The methodology was applied to narrow beams produced by a conventional 6 MV linac. The transmitted dose was measured using an array of ion chambers, as to simulate the linear nature of a tomotherapy detector. We showed that the iterative algorithm converges quickly and reconstructs the dose within a good agreement (at least 3% / 3 mm locally), which is inside the 5% recommended by the ICRU. Moreover it was demonstrated on phantom measurements that the proposed method allows us detecting some set-up errors and interfraction geometry modifications. We also have discussed the limitations of the 3D dose reconstruction for dose delivery error detection. Afterwards, stability tests of the tomotherapy MVCT built-in onboard detector was performed in order to evaluate if such a detector is suitable for 3D in-vivo dosimetry. The detector showed stability on short and long terms comparable to other imaging devices as the EPIDs, also used for in vivo dosimetry. Subsequently, a methodology for the dose reconstruction using the tomotherapy MVCT detector is proposed in the context of static irradiations. This manuscript is composed of two articles and a script providing further information related to this work. In the latter, the first chapter introduces the state-of-the-art of in vivo dosimetry and adaptive radiotherapy, and explains why we are interested in performing 3D dose reconstructions. In chapter 2 a dose calculation algorithm implemented for this work is reviewed with a detailed description of the physical parameters needed for calculating 3D absorbed dose distributions. The tomotherapy MVCT detector used for transit measurements and its characteristics are described in chapter 3. Chapter 4 contains a first article entitled '3D dose reconstruction for narrow beams using ion chamber array measurements', which describes the dose reconstruction method and presents tests of the methodology on phantoms irradiated with 6 MV narrow photon beams. Chapter 5 contains a second article 'Stability of the Helical TomoTherapy HiArt II detector for treatment beam irradiations. A dose reconstruction process specific to the use of the tomotherapy MVCT detector is presented in chapter 6. A discussion and perspectives of the PhD thesis are presented in chapter 7, followed by a conclusion in chapter 8. The tomotherapy treatment device is described in appendix 1 and an overview of 3D conformai- and intensity modulated radiotherapy is presented in appendix 2. - La dosimétrie in vivo est une technique utilisée pour vérifier la dose délivrée au patient en faisant une mesure, généralement pendant la première séance du traitement. Il s'agit de la seule technique de contrôle de la dose délivrée basée sur une mesure réalisée durant l'irradiation du patient. La dose au patient est calculée au moyen d'algorithmes 3D utilisant des images volumétriques du patient. En raison de la haute précision nécessaire lors des traitements de radiothérapie, des organismes nationaux et internationaux tels que l'ICRU et l'AAPM recommandent l'utilisation de la dosimétrie in vivo, qui est devenue obligatoire dans certains pays dont la France. Diverses méthodes de dosimétrie in vivo existent. Elles peuvent être classées en dosimétrie ponctuelle, planaire ou tridimensionnelle. La dosimétrie 3D est celle qui fournit le plus d'information sur la dose délivrée. Cependant, à notre connaissance, elle n'est généralement pas appliquée dans la routine clinique. Le but de cette recherche était de déterminer s'il est possible de reconstruire la dose 3D délivrée en se basant sur des mesures de la dose transmise, dans le contexte des faisceaux étroits. Une méthode itérative de reconstruction de la dose a été décrite et implémentée. L'algorithme itératif contient un algorithme simple basé sur le principe de convolution/superposition pour le calcul de la dose. La dose transmise a été mesurée à l'aide d'une série de chambres à ionisations alignées afin de simuler la nature linéaire du détecteur de la tomothérapie. Nous avons montré que l'algorithme itératif converge rapidement et qu'il permet de reconstruire la dose délivrée avec une bonne précision (au moins 3 % localement / 3 mm). De plus, nous avons démontré que cette méthode permet de détecter certaines erreurs de positionnement du patient, ainsi que des modifications géométriques qui peuvent subvenir entre les séances de traitement. Nous avons discuté les limites de cette méthode pour la détection de certaines erreurs d'irradiation. Par la suite, des tests de stabilité du détecteur MVCT intégré à la tomothérapie ont été effectués, dans le but de déterminer si ce dernier peut être utilisé pour la dosimétrie in vivo. Ce détecteur a démontré une stabilité à court et à long terme comparable à d'autres détecteurs tels que les EPIDs également utilisés pour l'imagerie et la dosimétrie in vivo. Pour finir, une adaptation de la méthode de reconstruction de la dose a été proposée afin de pouvoir l'implémenter sur une installation de tomothérapie. Ce manuscrit est composé de deux articles et d'un script contenant des informations supplémentaires sur ce travail. Dans ce dernier, le premier chapitre introduit l'état de l'art de la dosimétrie in vivo et de la radiothérapie adaptative, et explique pourquoi nous nous intéressons à la reconstruction 3D de la dose délivrée. Dans le chapitre 2, l'algorithme 3D de calcul de dose implémenté pour ce travail est décrit, ainsi que les paramètres physiques principaux nécessaires pour le calcul de dose. Les caractéristiques du détecteur MVCT de la tomothérapie utilisé pour les mesures de transit sont décrites dans le chapitre 3. Le chapitre 4 contient un premier article intitulé '3D dose reconstruction for narrow beams using ion chamber array measurements', qui décrit la méthode de reconstruction et présente des tests de la méthodologie sur des fantômes irradiés avec des faisceaux étroits. Le chapitre 5 contient un second article intitulé 'Stability of the Helical TomoTherapy HiArt II detector for treatment beam irradiations'. Un procédé de reconstruction de la dose spécifique pour l'utilisation du détecteur MVCT de la tomothérapie est présenté au chapitre 6. The purpose of this research project is to study current practices in enhancing visibility and protection of highway maintenance vehicles involved in moving operations such as snow removal and shoulder operations, crack sealing, and pothole patching. The results will enable the maintenance staff to adequately assess the applicability and impact of each strategy to their use and budget. The report’s literature review chapter examines the use of maintenance vehicle warning lights, retroreflective tapes, shadow vehicles and truck-mounted attenuators, and advanced vehicle control systems, as well as other practices to improve visibility for both snowplow operators and vehicles. The chapter concludes that the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices does not specify what color or kind of warning lights to use. Thus, a wide variety of lights are being used on maintenance vehicles. The study of the relevant literatures also suggests that there are no clear guidelines for moving work zones at this time. Two types of surveys were conducted to determine current practices to improve visibility and safety in moving work zones across the country and in the state of Iowa. In the first survey of state departments of transportation, most indicated using amber warning lights on their maintenance vehicles. Almost all the responding states indicated using some form of reflective material on their vehicles to make them more visible. Most participating states indicated that the color of their vehicles is orange. Most states indicated using more warning lights on snow removal vehicles than their other maintenance vehicles. All responding state agencies indicated using shadow vehicles and/or truck-mounted attenuators during their moving operations. In the second survey of Iowa counties, most indicated using very similar traffic control and warning devices during their granular road maintenance and snow removal operations. Mounting warning signs and rotating or strobe lights on the rear of maintenance vehicles is common for Iowa counties. The most common warning devices used during the counties’ snow removal operations are reflective tapes, warning flags, strobe lights, and auxiliary headlamps.

This is an exploratory research, with a quantitative approach, developed with the objective of analyzing the work and of life situations that can offer risks to the workers' health involved in the manual and automated cut of the sugar cane. The sample was composed by 39 sugar cane cutters and 16 operators of harvesters. The data collection occurred during the months of July and August of 2006, by the technique of direct observation of work situations and workers' homes and through interviews semi-structured. The interviews were recorded and later transcribed. Data were analyzed according to Social Ecological Theory. It was observed that the workers deal with multiple health risk situations, predominantly to the risks of occurrence of respiratory, musculoskeletal and psychological problems and work-related accidents due to the work activities. The interaction of individual, social and environmental factors can determine the workers' tendency to falling ill.

In the past, sensors networks in cities have been limited to fixed sensors, embedded in particular locations, under centralised control. Today, new applications can leverage wireless devices and use them as sensors to create aggregated information. In this paper, we show that the emerging patterns unveiled through the analysis of large sets of aggregated digital footprints can provide novel insights into how people experience the city and into some of the drivers behind these emerging patterns. We particularly explore the capacity to quantify the evolution of the attractiveness of urban space with a case study of in the area of the New York City Waterfalls, a public art project of four man-made waterfalls rising from the New York Harbor. Methods to study the impact of an event of this nature are traditionally based on the collection of static information such as surveys and ticket-based people counts, which allow to generate estimates about visitors’ presence in specific areas over time. In contrast, our contribution makes use of the dynamic data that visitors generate, such as the density and distribution of aggregate phone calls and photos taken in different areas of interest and over time. Our analysis provides novel ways to quantify the impact of a public event on the distribution of visitors and on the evolution of the attractiveness of the points of interest in proximity. This information has potential uses for local authorities, researchers, as well as service providers such as mobile network operators.

A long-standing controversy is whether autophagy is a bona fide cause of mammalian cell death. We used a cell-penetrating autophagy-inducing peptide, Tat-Beclin 1, derived from the autophagy protein Beclin 1, to investigate whether high levels of autophagy result in cell death by autophagy. Here we show that Tat-Beclin 1 induces dose-dependent death that is blocked by pharmacological or genetic inhibition of autophagy, but not of apoptosis or necroptosis. This death, termed "autosis," has unique morphological features, including increased autophagosomes/autolysosomes and nuclear convolution at early stages, and focal swelling of the perinuclear space at late stages. We also observed autotic death in cells during stress conditions, including in a subpopulation of nutrient-starved cells in vitro and in hippocampal neurons of neonatal rats subjected to cerebral hypoxia-ischemia in vivo. A chemical screen of ~5,000 known bioactive compounds revealed that cardiac glycosides, antagonists of Na(+),K(+)-ATPase, inhibit autotic cell death in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, genetic knockdown of the Na(+),K(+)-ATPase α1 subunit blocks peptide and starvation-induced autosis in vitro. Thus, we have identified a unique form of autophagy-dependent cell death, a Food and Drug Administration-approved class of compounds that inhibit such death, and a crucial role for Na(+),K(+)-ATPase in its regulation. These findings have implications for understanding how cells die during certain stress conditions and how such cell death might be prevented.

This final project was made for the Broadband/Implementation department of TeliaSonera Finland. The question to be examined is if the operator should replace multiple ADSL connections implemented over a leased line with Multi-Dwelling access based on an Ethernet/Optical Fibre access network. The project starts with describing the technology related to these access network solu-tions and presents the technology that is used in TeliaSonera Finland's access network. It continues from the technology to describe the problem with some of the ADSL implemen-tations of TeliaSonera. The problem is the implementations done over a leased line that can cost TeliaSonera over years as much as a possible investment to extend network when there is several lines leased to the same building. The project proposes a Multi-Dwelling access as a solution to this problem and defines the circumstances when to use it. After a satisfactory solution has found the project takes a view how implementation of the solution might alter the network and a new problem is found. When used commonly to replace need of ADSL implementation Multi-Dwelling access would significantly increase optical cable congestion near operators POP. As a final deed this project also proposes a technical change to existing way to implement multi-dwelling access with EPON technology.

Coherent regulation of landscape as a resource is a major challenge. How can the development interests of some actors (eg cable car operators and property developers) be reconciled with those of others (agriculture, forestry) and with conservation of biodiversity and scenic value? To help understand how the newly introduced Regional Nature Parks (RNPs) can improve the coherence of the regulation regime in Switzerland, we highlight current direct mechanisms for regulation of landscape as a resource (bans, inventories, subsidies) as well as indirect mechanisms (taking place through the regulation of the physical basis of landscapes, eg forest, land, and water planning policies). We show that RNPs are fundamentally innovative because they make it possible to manage and coordinate indirect strategies for appropriate regulation of resources at a landscape scale. In other words, RNPs enable organization of governance of landscape as a resource in a perimeter that is not necessarily restricted to administrative boundaries.

Each winter, the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) maintenance operators are primarily responsible for plowing snow off federal and state roads. Drivers typically work long shifts under treacherous conditions. In addition to properly navigating the vehicle, drivers are required to operate several plowing mechanisms simultaneously, such as plow controls and salt sprayers. However, operators have few opportunities during the year to practice and refine their skills. An ideal training program would provide operators with the opportunity to practice these skills under realistic yet safe conditions, as well as provide basic training to novice or less-experienced operators. Recent technological advancements have made driving simulators a desirable training and research tool. This literature review discusses much of the recent research establishing simulator fidelity and espousing its applicability. Additionally, this report provides a summary of behavioral and eye tracking research involving driving simulators. Other research topics include comparisons between novice and expert drivers’ behavioral patterns, methods for avoiding cybersickness in virtual environments, and a synopsis of current personality measures with respect to job performance and driving performance. This literature review coincides with a study designed to examine the effectiveness of virtual reality snowplow simulator training for current maintenance operators, using the TranSim VS III truck and snowplow simulator recently purchased by the Iowa DOT.

Objective To identify the difficulties of families with children and/or adolescents with mental disorder. Method This is an integrative review. In December 2013, an electronic search was performed on Latin American Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences databases (LILACS) and on Electronic Medicus Index of the National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE) indexed in the Health Virtual Library (BVS) using a combination of descriptors and boolean operators as follows: mental disorders and child or adolescent and caregivers and/not health staff. Results 557 studies were identified, of which 15 were selected for this study. The findings indicated difficulties related to the care for or to interaction with children/adolescents with mental disorder. Conclusion The studies revealed difficulties related to everyday practices of care and feelings expressed during care practices, as well as in relationships with children or adolescents with mental disorder.

Drivers typically work long shifts under treacherous conditions. In addition to properly navigating the vehicle, drivers are required to operate several plowing mechanisms simultaneously, such as plow controls and salt spreaders. There is little opportunity for practicing these skills in real-world situations. A virtual reality training program would provide operators with the opportunity to practice these skills under realistic yet safe conditions, as well as provide basic training to novice or less-experienced operators. In order to provide such training to snowplow operators in Iowa, the Iowa DOT purchased a snowplow simulator. The Iowa DOT commissioned a study through Iowa State University designed to (1) assess the use of this simulator as a training tool and (2) examine personality and other characteristics associated with being an experienced snowplow operator. The results of this study suggest that Iowa DOT operators of all ages and levels of experience enjoyed and seemed to benefit from virtual reality snowplow simulator training. Simulator sickness ratings were relatively low, implying that the simulator is appropriate for training a wide range of Iowa DOT operators. Many reported that simulator training was the most useful aspect of training for them.

PURPOSE: Most existing methods for accelerated parallel imaging in MRI require additional data, which are used to derive information about the sensitivity profile of each radiofrequency (RF) channel. In this work, a method is presented to avoid the acquisition of separate coil calibration data for accelerated Cartesian trajectories. METHODS: Quadratic phase is imparted to the image to spread the signals in k-space (aka phase scrambling). By rewriting the Fourier transform as a convolution operation, a window can be introduced to the convolved chirp function, allowing a low-resolution image to be reconstructed from phase-scrambled data without prominent aliasing. This image (for each RF channel) can be used to derive coil sensitivities to drive existing parallel imaging techniques. As a proof of concept, the quadratic phase was applied by introducing an offset to the x(2) - y(2) shim and the data were reconstructed using adapted versions of the image space-based sensitivity encoding and GeneRalized Autocalibrating Partially Parallel Acquisitions algorithms. RESULTS: The method is demonstrated in a phantom (1 × 2, 1 × 3, and 2 × 2 acceleration) and in vivo (2 × 2 acceleration) using a 3D gradient echo acquisition. CONCLUSION: Phase scrambling can be used to perform parallel imaging acceleration without acquisition of separate coil calibration data, demonstrated here for a 3D-Cartesian trajectory. We introduce simple nonparametric density estimators that generalize theclassical histogram and frequency polygon. The new estimators are expressed as linear combination of density functions that are piecewisepolynomials, where the coefficients are optimally chosen in order to minimize the integrated square error of the estimator. We establish the asymptotic behaviour of the proposed estimators, and study theirperformance in a simulation study.

We explain why European trucking carriers are much smaller and rely more heavily on owner-operators(as opposed to employee drivers) than their US counterparts. Our analysis begins by ruling outdifferences in technology as the source of those disparities and confirms that standard hypothesesin organizational economics, which have been shown to explain the choice of organizational form inUS industry, also apply in Europe. We then argue that the preference for subcontracting oververtical integration in Europe is the result of European institutions particularly, labor regulationand tax laws that increase the costs of vertical integration.

This work studies the organization of less-than-truckload trucking from a contractual point of view. We show that the huge number of owner-operators working in the industry hides a much less fragmented reality. Most of those owner-operators are quasi-integrated in higher organizational structures. This hybrid form is generally more efficient than vertical integration because, in the Spanish institutional environment, it lessens serious moral hazard problems, related mainly to the use of the vehicles, and makes it possible to reach economies of scale and density. Empirical evidence suggests that what leads organizations to vertically integrate is not the presence of such economies but hold-up problems, related to the existence of specific assets. Finally, an international comparison hints that institutional constraints are able to explain differences in the evolution of vertical integration across countries.
