During the past 10 years, this project tested 23 barley and 51 wheat varieties with 19 and 34 registered herbicides, respectively. It concentrated on new varieties and herbicides. The research highlighted that Northern Region (NR) wheat and barley varieties differed considerably in their sensitivity to these herbicides. Overall, 9 per cent of wheat variety x herbicide combinations and 6 per cent of barley variety x herbicide combinations had significant yield losses (3 to 38%) from herbicides at recommended rates and crop stages. In addition, 21 to 23 per cent had significant yield losses from herbicides at double rates, indicating a narrow margin of crop safety.

The calorimetric values of composite solid propellant based on polystyrene, polyphenolformaldehyde, poly(vinyl chloride) and carboxy-terminated polybutadiene were determined using combustion calorimetry in order to assess the uncertainities in their measurements. The dependence of the calorimetric values on various propellant composition was obtained. The stoichiometry of oxidizer and fuel in the propellant for complete combustion obtained experimentally were compared with the theoretical stoichiometry calculated based on the oxidizer decomposition.

Detailed ESR investigations of Mn2+ substituting for Ca2+ in Ca2Sr(C2H5COO)6, (DSP) and Ca2Pb(C2H5COO)6, (DLP) and Ca2Ba(C2H5COO)6, (DBP), in single crystals and powders, over the temperature range from 300°C to -180°C have been carried out to study the successive phase transitions in these compounds. Spectra have been analyzed in terms of axial spin Hamiltonians and the temperature dependences of the parameters studied. Across the I-II transition, new physically and chemically inequivalent sites appear indicating the disappearance of the diad axes on which the propionate groups are located, bringing out the connection between the motional states of the propionate groups and the occurrence of ferroelectricity. The II-III transition also causes chemically inequivalent sites to develop, indicating that the transitions may not be isomorphous as believed previously. Similarities and dissimilarities of the ESR spectra of DLP, DSP and DBP are discussed in relation to the phase transitions.

Free vibration analysis is carried out to study the vibration characteristics of composite laminates using the modified shear deformation, layered, composite plate theory and employing the Rayleigh-Ritz energy approach. The analysis is presented in a unified form so as to incorporate all different combinations of laminate boundary conditions and with full coverage with regard to the various design parameters of a laminated plate. A parametric study is made using a beam characteristic function as the admissible function for the numerical calculations. The numerical results presented here are for an example case of fully clamped boundary conditions and are compared with previously published results. The effect of parameters, such as the aspect ratio of plates, ply-angle, number of layers and also the thickness ratios of plies in laminates on the frequencies of the laminate, is systematically studied. It is found that for anti-symmetric angle-ply or cross-ply laminates unique numerical values of the thickness ratios exist which improve the vibration characteristics of such laminates. Numerical values of the non-dimensional frequencies and nodal patterns, using the thickness ratio distribution of the plies, are then obtained for clamped laminates, fabricated out of various commonly used composite materials, and are presented in the form of the design curves.

A study of the phase transitions in (NH4)2SO4 and (NH4)2SO4---K2SO4 mixed crystals by EPR of the CrO3- ion is reported. The results indicate a bilinear coupling of the order parameter with spontaneous polarization and a crossover from a discontinuous to a continuous nature of the phase transition in mixed crystals.

This thesis examines the feasibility of a forest inventory method based on two-phase sampling in estimating forest attributes at the stand or substand levels for forest management purposes. The method is based on multi-source forest inventory combining auxiliary data consisting of remote sensing imagery or other geographic information and field measurements. Auxiliary data are utilized as first-phase data for covering all inventory units. Various methods were examined for improving the accuracy of the forest estimates. Pre-processing of auxiliary data in the form of correcting the spectral properties of aerial imagery was examined (I), as was the selection of aerial image features for estimating forest attributes (II). Various spatial units were compared for extracting image features in a remote sensing aided forest inventory utilizing very high resolution imagery (III). A number of data sources were combined and different weighting procedures were tested in estimating forest attributes (IV, V). Correction of the spectral properties of aerial images proved to be a straightforward and advantageous method for improving the correlation between the image features and the measured forest attributes. Testing different image features that can be extracted from aerial photographs (and other very high resolution images) showed that the images contain a wealth of relevant information that can be extracted only by utilizing the spatial organization of the image pixel values. Furthermore, careful selection of image features for the inventory task generally gives better results than inputting all extractable features to the estimation procedure. When the spatial units for extracting very high resolution image features were examined, an approach based on image segmentation generally showed advantages compared with a traditional sample plot-based approach. Combining several data sources resulted in more accurate estimates than any of the individual data sources alone. The best combined estimate can be derived by weighting the estimates produced by the individual data sources by the inverse values of their mean square errors. Despite the fact that the plot-level estimation accuracy in two-phase sampling inventory can be improved in many ways, the accuracy of forest estimates based mainly on single-view satellite and aerial imagery is a relatively poor basis for making stand-level management decisions.

Sperm chromatin fragmentation is associated with subfertility, but its relationship with age progression in young bulls is poorly understood. The objective was to assess sperm chromatin fragmentation during the early post-pubertal development of 20 tropical composite bulls, using a sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA) and sperm-bos-halomax (SBH). Bulls were subjected to bull breeding soundness evaluation (BBSE) at mean ages of 13, 18, and 24 mo. Traits measured included liveweight (WT), body condition score (BCS) and scrotal circumference (SC). Semen samples were collected by electroejaculation and assessed for mass activity (MA), motility (Mot), concentration (conc), sperm morphology and chromatin fragmentation. Concentration (r = 0.34, P = 0.0076), Mot (r = 0.36, P = 0.0041) and percentage of morphologic normal sperm (percent normal sperm (PNS); r = 0.31, P = 0.0132) were positively correlated with age. The percentage of sperm with proximal droplets (PD) was negatively correlated with age (r = -0.28, P = 0.0348), whereas neither SCSA nor SBH results were significantly correlated with age. The percentage of sperm with chromatin fragmentation using SCSA was correlated with PNS (r = -0.53, P < 0.0001), the percentage of sperm with head abnormalities (r = 0.68, P < 0.0001) and the percentage of intact sperm (Int) with SBH (r = -0.26, P = 0.0456). In summary, for assessment of sperm chromatin fragmentation, samples could be equally collected at 13, 18 or 24 mo of age, as results did not vary with age. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. Detailed ESR investigations of Mn2+ substituting for Ca2+ in Ca2Sr(C2H5COO)6 (DSP), Ca2Pb(C2H5COO)6 (DLP) and Ca2Ba(C2H5COO)6 (DBP), in single crystals and powders, over the temperature range from 200°C to -180°C have been carried out to study the successive phase transitions in these compounds. (DSP: [Tetragonal] ← 8.5°C → [tetragonal, ferroelectric] [tetragonal] ← -169°C → [monoclinic, ferroelectric]; DLP : [tetragonal] ← 60°C → [tetragonal, ferroelectric] ← -71.5°C → [monoclinic, ferroelectric]; [Cubic] ← -6°C → [orthorhombic] ← -75°C → [?]). Spectra have been analysed in terms of axial spin Hamiltonians and the temperature dependences of the parameters studied. In DSP and DLP across the I ↔ II transition, new physically and chemically inequivalent sites appear indicating the disappearance of the diad axes on which the propionate groups are located, bringing out the connection between the motional states of the propionate groups and the occurence of ferroelectricity. The II ↔ III transition also causes chemically inequivalent sites to develop, indicating that the transitions may not be isomorphous as believed previously. In DBP, the -6°C transition leads to (i) a doubling of both physically and chemically inequivalent sites (ii) a small (150 G at -6°C to 170 G at -8°C), but abrupt change in the magnitude of the zero-field splitting tensor D, and (iii) displacements of the orientations of the D tensors. Results are interpreted in terms of alternate rotations of the oxygen octahedra, showing participation of the carboxyl oxygens in the transition. No drastic changes in the parameters occur across the -75°C transition consistent with its second order nature. Similarities and dissimilarities of the ESR spectra of the three compounds in relation to the phase transitions, are discussed.

In this paper an attempt is made to obtain deflections of hybrid, laminated, rectangular and skew composite plates. Analysis is performed by employing the Galerkin technique. Numerical results have been obtained for two types of layups employing Kevlar/epoxy and Boron/epoxy laminae. It is observed that for a given aspect ratio the rigidity of the skew plate increases with an increase in the skew angle. Further, for a specified deflection, the hybrid laminates turn out to be lighter.

This paper is a sequel to the work published by the first and third authors[l] on stiffened laminated shells of revolution made of unimodular materials (materials having identical properties in tension and compression). A finite element analysis of laminated bimodulus composite thin shells of revolution, reinforced by laminated bimodulus composite stiffeners is reported herein. A 48 dot doubly curved quadrilateral laminated anisotropic shell of revolution finite element and it's two compatible 16 dof stiffener finite elements namely: (i) a laminated anisotropic parallel circle stiffener element (PCSE) and (ii) a laminated anisotropic meridional stiffener element (MSE) have been used iteratively. The constitutive relationship of each layer is assumed to depend on whether the fiberdirection strain is tensile or compressive. The true state of strain or stress is realized when the locations of the neutral surfaces in the shell and the stiffeners remain unaltered (to a specified accuracy) between two successive iterations. The solutions for static loading of a stiffened plate, a stiffened cylindrical shell. and a stiffened spherical shell, all made of bimodulus composite materials, have been presented.

The electrical resistivity of layerd crystalline GeSe has been investigated up to a pressure of 100 kbar and down to liquid-nitrogen temperature by use of a Bridgman anvil device. A pressure-induced first-order phase transition has been observed in single-crystal GeSe near 6 GPa. The high-pressure phase is found to be quenchable and an x-ray diffraction study of the quenched material reveals that it has the face-centered-cubic structure. Resistivity measurements as a function of pressure and temperature suggest that the high-pressure phase is metallic.
