An apolar helical decapeptide with different end groups, Boc- or Ac-, crystallizes in a completely parallel fashion for the Boc-analog and in an antiparallel fashion for the Ac-analog. In both crystals, the packing motif consists of rows of parallel molecules. In the Boc-crystals, adjacent rows assemble with the helix axes pointed in the same direction. In the Ac-crystals, adjacent rows assemble with the helix axes pointed in opposite directions. The conformations of the molecules in both crystals are quite similar, predominantly alpha-helical, except for the tryptophanyl side chain where chi 1 congruent to 60 degrees in the Boc- analog and congruent to 180 degrees in the Ac-analog. As a result, there is one lateral hydrogen bond between helices, N(1 epsilon)...O(7), in the Ac-analog. The structures do not provide a ready rationalization of packing preference in terms of side-chain interactions and do not support a major role for helix dipole interactions in determining helix orientation in crystals. The crystal parameters are as follow. Boc-analog: C60H97N11O13.C3H7OH, space group Pl with a = 10.250(3) A, b = 12.451(4) A, c = 15.077(6) A, alpha = 96.55(3) degrees, beta = 92.31(3) degrees, gamma = 106.37(3) degrees, Z = 1, R = 5.5% for 5581 data ([F] greater than 3.0 sigma(F)), resolution 0.89 A. Ac-analog: C57H91N11O12, space group P2(1) with a = 9.965(1) A, b = 19.707(3) A, c = 16.648(3) A, beta = 94.08(1), Z = 2, R = 7.2% for 2530 data ([F] greater than 3.0 sigma(F)), resolution 1.00 A.

The crystal structures of four peptides incorporating 1-aminocycloheptane-1-carboxylic acid (Ac7c) are described. Boc-Aib-Ac7c-NHMe and Boc-Pro-Ac7c-Ala-OMe adopt beta-turn conformations stabilized by an intramolecular 4----1 hydrogen bond, the former folding into a type-I/III beta-turn and the latter into a type-II beta-turn. In the dipeptide esters, Boc-Aib-Ac7c-OMe and Boc-Pro-Ac7c-OMe, the Ac7c and Aib residues adopt helical conformations, while the Pro residue remains semi-extended in both the molecules of Boc-Pro-Ac7c-OMe found in the asymmetric unit. The cycloheptane ring of Ac7c residues adopts a twist-chair conformation in all the peptides studied. 1H-NMR studies in CDCl3 and (CD3)2SO and IR studies in CDCl3 suggest that Boc-Aib-Ac7c-NHMe and Boc-Pro-Ac7c-Ala-OMe maintain the beta-turn conformations in solution.

La0.5Li0.5TiO3 perovskite was synthesized by various wet chemical methods. By adopting low temperature methods of preparation lithium loss from the material is prevented. La0.5Li0.5TiO3 (LLTO) was formed with cubic symmetry at 1473 K. LLTO was formed at relatively lower temperature by using hydrothermal preparation method. PVA gel-decomposition route yield tetragonal LLTO on annealing the dried gel at 1473 K. By using gel-carbonate route LiTi2O4 minor phase was found to remain even after heat-treatment at 1473 K. The hydroxylation of LLTO was done in deionized water as well as in dilute acetic acid medium. By hydroxylation process incorporation of hydroxyls and leaching out of Li+ was observed from the material. The Li+ concentration of these compositions was examined by AAS. The electrical conductivities of these compositions were measured by dc and ac impedance techniques at elevated temperatures. The activation energies of electrical conduction for these compositions were estimated from the experimental results. The measured activation energy of Li+ conduction is 0.34 eV. Unhydroxylated samples exhibit only Li+ conduction, whereas, the hydroxylated LLTO show proton conductivity at 298-550 K in addition to Li+ conductivity. The effect of Zr or Ce substitution in place of Ti were attempted. La0.5Li0.5ZrO3 Perovskite was not formed; instead pyrochlore phase (La2Zr2O7) along with monoclinic ZrO2 phases was observed above 1173 K; below 1173 K cubic ZrO2 is stable. (La0.5Li0.5)(2)CeO4 solid solution was formed in the case of Ce substitution at Ti sublattice on heat-treatment up to 1673 K. (c) 2005 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc.

The structure of the peptide Boc-Ala-Leu-Ac(7)c-Ala-Leu-Ac(7)c-OMe (Ac(7)c,1-aminocycloheptane-1-carboxylic acid) is described in crystals. The presence of two Ac(7)c residues was expected to stabilize a 3(10)-helical fold. Contrary to expectation the structural analysis revealed an unfolded amino terminus, with Ala(1) adopting an extended beta-conformation (phi = -93degrees,psi = 112degrees). Residues 2-5 form a 3(10)-helix, stabilized by three successive intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Notably, two NH groups Ala(1) and Ac(7)c(3) do not form any hydrogen bonds in the crystal. Peptide assembly appears to be dominated by packing of the cycloheptane rings that stack against one another within the molecule and also throughout the crystal in columns.

The transmission electron microscopy images of in situ prepared multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)and polyaniline (PANI) composites show that nanotubes are well dispersed in aqueous medium, and the nanofibers of PANI facilitate intertube transport. Although low temperature transport indicates variable range hopping (VRH) mechanism, the dc and ac conductivity become temperature independent as the MWNT content increases. The onset frequency for the increase in conductivity is observed to be strongly dependent on the MWNT weight percent, and the ac conductivity can be scaled onto a master curve. The negative magnetoresistance is attributed to the forward interference scattering mechanism in VRH transport. (C) 2010 American.

Design of high-frequency inductors for purposes like Active Front End (AFE) converter filters involves analytical calculations based on methods like area product approach and accurate graphical methods. Once a core with an area product is selected the subsequent calculations of inductance and peak operating flux requires the estimation of reluctance of the magnetic circuit. This in turn demands an estimate of the fringing that will happen in the air gap of the inductor. In this paper we have looked at analytical methods for evaluating fringing flux and compared it with results from finite element method. Different levels of details of modelling the inductor is first considered for this purpose. The end results are compared with experimental measurements of inductance. It is shown that simple fringing flux model can provide accurate models for the inductor design.

Summary form only given. The authors have developed a controllable HTSC (high-temperature superconductor) weak-link fabrication process for producing weak links from the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO), using PrBa2Cu3O7-x (PBCO) as a lattice-matched semiconducting barrier layer. The devices obtained show current-voltage characteristics similar to those observed for low-temperature superconductor/normal-metal/superconductor (SNS) devices. The authors found good scaling of the critical currents Ic with area, A, and scaling of the resistances Rj with 1/A; the typical values of the IcRj product of 3.5 mV are consistent with traditional SNS behavior. The authors observed Shapiro steps in response to 100-GHz millimeter-wave radiation and oscillation of the DC supercurrent in a transverse magnetic field, thus demonstrating that both the AC and DC Josephson effects occur in these devices.

A simple firing delay circuit for 3-φ fully controlled bridge using a phase locked loop is described. The circuit uses very few components and is an improved scheme over the existing methods. The use of this circuit in three-phase thyristor converters and 'circulating current free' mode dual converters is described.

Antiferroelectric lead zirconate thin films were deposited using KrF (248 nm) excimer laser ablation technique. Utilization of antiferroelectric materials is proposed in high charge storage capacitors and microelectromechanical (MEMs) devices. The antiferroelectric nature of lead zirconate thin films was confirmed by the presence of double hysteresis behavior in polarization versus applied field response. By controlling the processing parameters, two types of microstructures evolved, namely columnar (or in-situ) and multi-grained (or ex-situ) in PZ thin films. The dielectric and electrical properties of the lead zirconate thin films were studied with respect to the processing parameters. Analysis on charge transport mechanism, using space charge limited conduction phenomenon, showed the presence of both shallow and deep trap sites in the PZ thin films. The estimated shallow trap energies were 0.448 and 0.491 eV for in-situ and ex-situ films, with respective concentrations of approximate to 7.9 x 10(18)/cc and approximate to 2.97 x 10(18)/cc. The deep trap energies with concentrations were 1.83 eV with 1.4 x 10(16)/cc for ex-situ and 1.76 eV with 3.8 x 10(16)/cc for in-situ PZ thin films, respectively. These activation energies were found to be consistent with the analysis from Arrhenius plots of de current densities. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

The dielectric response of pulsed laser ablated barium strontium titanate thin films were studied as a function of frequency and ambient temperature (from room temperature to 320 degrees C) by employing impedance spectroscopy. Combined modulus and impedance spectroscopic plots were used to study the response of the film, which in general may contain the grain, grain boundary, and the electrode/film interface as capacitive elements. The spectroscopic plots revealed that the major response was due to the grains, while contributions from the grain boundary or the electrode/film interface was negligible. Further observation from the complex impedance plot showed data points lying on a single semicircle, implying the response originated from a single capacitive element corresponding to the bulk grains. Conductivity plots against frequency at different temperatures suggested a response obeying the 'universal power law'. The value of the activation energies computed from the Arrhenius plots of both ac and dc conductivities with 1000/T were 0.97 and 1.04 eV, respectively. This was found to be in excellent agreement with published literature, and was attributed to the motion of oxygen vacancies within the bulk. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. With the rapid development of photovoltaic system installations and increased number of grid connected power systems, it has become imperative to develop an efficient grid interfacing instrumentation suitable for photovoltaic systems ensuring maximum power transfer. The losses in the power converter play an important role in the overall efficiency of a PV system. Chain cell converter is considered to be efficient as compared to PWM converters due to lower switching losses, modularized circuit layout, reduced voltage rating of the converter switches, reduced EMI. The structure of separate dc sources in chain cell converter is well suited for photovoltaic systems as there will b several separate PV modules in the PV array which can act as an individual dc source. In this work, a single phase multilevel chain cell converter is used to interface the photovoltaic array to a single phase grid at a frequency of 50Hz. Control algorithms are developed for efficient interfacing of the PV system with grid and isolating the PV system from grid under faulty conditions. Digital signal processor TMS320F 2812 is used to implement the control algorithms developed and for the generation of other control signals.

The microstructural dependence of electrical properties of (Ba, Sr)TiO3(BST) thin films were studied from the viewpoint of dc and ac electrical properties. The films were grown using a pulsed laser deposition technique in a temperature range of 300 to 600 degrees C, inducing changes in grain size, structure, and morphology. Consequently, two different types of films were realized, of which type I, was polycrystalline, multigrained, while type II was [100] oriented possessing a densely packed fibrous microstructure. Leakage current measurements were done at elevated temperatures to provide evidence of the conduction mechanism present in these films. The results revealed a contribution from both electronic and ionic conduction. In the case of type I films, two trapping levels were identified with energies around 0.5 and 2.73 eV, which possibly originate from oxygen vacancies V-O and Ti3+ centers, respectively. These levels act as shallow and deep traps and are reflected in the current-voltage characteristics of the BST thin films. The activation energy associated with oxygen vacancy motion in this case was obtained as 1.28 eV. On the contrary, type II films showed no evidence of deep trap energy levels, while the identified activation energy associated with shallow traps was obtained as 0.38 eV. The activation energy obtained for oxygen vacancy motion in type II films was around 1.02 eV. The dc measurement results were further elucidated through ac impedance analysis, which revealed a grain boundary dominated response in type I in comparison to type II films where grain response is highlighted. A comparison of the mean relaxation time of the two films revealed three orders of magnitude higher relaxation time in the case of type I films. Due to smaller grain size in type I films the grains were considered to be completely depleted giving rise to only grain boundary response for the bulk of the film. The activation energy obtained from conductivity plots agree very well with that of dc measurements giving values 1.3 and 1.07 eV for type I and type II films, respectively. Since oxygen vacancy transport have been identified as the origin of resistance degradation in BST thin films, type I films with their higher value of activation energy for oxygen ion mobility explains the improvement in breakdown characteristics under constant high dc field stress. The role of microstructure in controlling the rate of degradation is found useful in this instance to enhance the film properties under high electric field stresses. A procedure has been given for minimizing the total output noise of a Generalized Impedance Converter (GIC), subject to constraints dictated by signal handling capability of the Operational Amplifiers and ease of microcircuit fabrication. The noise reduction is achieved only by the adjustment of RC elements of the GIC, and the total output noise after optimization in the example cited is close to the theoretical lower limit. The output noise of a higher-order filter can be reduced by RC-optimizing the individual GIC's of the active realization. Experimental results on a 20–24 kHz channel bank band-pass filter demonstrate the effectiveness of the above procedure.
