This study aimed to describe the population structure of the Amazon shrimp Macrobrachium amazonicum, as well as their relative growth between the length of the cephalothorax and the total length, and between the length of the cephalothorax and the total mass of shrimps of a fluvial-estuarine plain in the State of Pará. Shrimps were sampled monthly from August 2006 to July 2007, using trawl nets, taking three replicates at each site (Arapiranga and Mosqueiro) per month, totaling 72 replicates. We caught 5,510 specimens, being 90.90% from Arapiranga Island and 9.1% from Mosqueiro Island. The highest densities occurred in July (1.33 individuals/m2), at the beginning of the dry season and in December (1.66 individuals/m2), at the beginning of the rainy season. The morphometric analysis for separate and grouped sexes resulted in negative and positive allometric growth. Ovigerous females were observed in all months, indicating continuous reproduction and the majority (67.81%) was caught during the less rainy season. The abundance and continuous reproduction of M. amazonicum show that this estuary offers conditions for the proper development of this population.

This study aimed to evaluate the sediment quality in the estuarine protected area known as Canan,ia-Iguape-Peruibe (CIP-PA), located on the southeastern coast of Brazil. The study was designed considering possible negative effects induced by the city of Canan,ia on the sediment quality of surrounding areas. This evaluation was performed using chemical and ecotoxicological analyses. Sediments were predominantly sandy, with low CaCO3 contents. Amounts of organic matter varied, but higher contents occurred closer to the city, as well as did Fe and Total Recoverable Oils and Greases (TROGs) concentrations. Contamination by Cd and Cu was revealed in some samples, while concentrations of Zn were considered low. Chronic toxicity was detected in all tested sediments and acute toxicity occurred only in sediments collected near the city. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed an association among Cd, Cu, Fe, TROG, fines, organic matter, CaCO3, and chronic toxicity, whereas acute toxicity was found to be associated with Zn and mud. However, because Zn levels were low, acute toxicity was likely due to a contaminant that was not measured. Results show that there is a broad area within the CIP-PA that is under the influence of mining activities (chronic toxicity, moderate contamination by metals), whereas poorer conditions occur closer to Canan,ia (acute toxicity); thus, the urban area seems to constitute a relevant source of contaminants for the estuarine complex. These results show that contamination is already capable of producing risks for the local aquatic biota, which suggests that the CIP-PA effectiveness in protecting estuarine biota may be threatened.

The city of Ilha Comprida, located on the Environmental Protection Area Cananéia-Iguape-Peruíbe (APA CIP) and Lagoon Estuary Complex of Iguape-Cananéia-Paranaguá, is located at the southern end of the coast of the state of São Paulo. Ilha Comprida is a progradational barrier consists predominantly of sandy sediments of the Quaternary Period. Bibliographic and cartographic surveys demonstrate a large amount of sediments in the last centuries, leading to the expansion of the island in hundreds of meters towards SW / NE. The island has been suffering intense morphological change in the northeast corner - NE, growing 35 meters per year. The objective of this study is to measure and analyze the floristic diversity found in its extreme NE, recent accumulation area of sediment, comparing the results with data obtained in equivalent segment, located on the edge SW, agradation preterit area. Given this reality, we chose to assess how the process of ecological succession respond to these dynamics. That is, if we think of ecological succession, NE end (latest) is assumed to possess plant species in the initial stage of succession as well as the SW portion. However, it is assumed certain differentiation between species in both areas, and less diversity in the first case (NE). Using the method of fixed installments adopted for similar quadrants, we attempted to measure and analyze the floristic diversity of the NE end and compare the data obtained in the field with those listed for the SW end. The results confirmed the hypothesis of the research, and prompted several questions that point to the need for further deepening research on this theme

We investigated the influence of environmental factors in spatial and temporal distribution of the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri in Santos Bay and São Vicente Estuary, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Monthly samples were obtained, from May 2008 through April 2010, from four locations in the estuary and four in the bay. No individual was collected in the estuary and this was attributed to the low salinity means recorded in this environment. We collected 109,153 individuals in the bay and there was no difference in abundance between the two years comprised by the study period. The similarity in spatial distribution can be related to sediment grain size that in all sampling locations showed great amount of very fine sand. The largest amount of reproductive females was obtained in early 2010, when temperature was high, and this could have increased the juvenile recruitment in April 2010. According to our results, the distribution of X. kroyeri in the study area is influenced by temperature, which is related to reproduction, and salinity, limiting the entrance of individuals in the estuarine region.
