Supported Cu(II) polymer catalysts were used for the catalytic oxidation of phenol at 30 degrees C and atmospheric pressure using air and H(2)O(2) as oxidants. Heterogenisation of homogeneous Cu(II) catalysts was achieved by adsorption of Cu(II) salts onto polymeric matrices (poly(4-vinylpyridine), Chitosan). The catalytic active sites were represented by Cu(II) ions and showed to conserve their oxidative activity in heterogeneous catalysis as well as in homogeneous systems. The catalytic deactivation was evaluated by quantifying released Cu(II) ions in solution during oxidation, from where Cu-PVP(25) showed the best leaching levels no more than 5 mg L(-1). Results also indicated that Cu-PVP(25) had a catalytic activity (56% of phenol conversion when initial Cu(II) catalytic content was 200 mg L(Reaction)(-1)) comparable to that of commercial catalysts (59% of phenol conversion). Finally, the balance between activity and copper leaching was better represented by Cu-PVP(25) due to the heterogeneous catalytic activity had 86% performance in the heterogeneous phase, and the rest on the homogeneous phase, while Cu-PVP(2) had 59% and CuO/gamma-Al(2)O(3) 68%.

The conformational properties of the microtubule-stabilizing agent epothilone A ( 1a) and its 3-deoxy and 3-deoxy-2,3-didehydro derivatives 2 and 3 have been investigated in aqueous solution by a combination of NMR spectroscopic methods, Monte Carlo conformational searches, and NAMFIS calculations. The tubulin-bound conformation of epothilone A ( 1a), as previously proposed on the basis of solution NMR data, was found to represent a significant fraction of the ensemble of conformations present for the free ligands in aqueous solution.

Careful examination of the literature available shows that the electrodeposition of manganese from various aqueous solutions has not been attempted to any great extent. The best method for the electrodeposition of pure manganese consists in the electrolysis of a solution containing manganous and ammonium sulphates.

Manganese has been successfully electrodeposited from aqueous solutions in past years by several workers in electrochemical and electrometallurgical fields. The present work was concerned, primarily, with investigation of electrodeposition from solutions which are commercially obtainable from the hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical treatment of the low grade manganese deposits of this country.

The aqueous phase processing of glyoxylic acid, pyruvic acid, oxalic acid and methylglyoxal was studied simulating dark and radical free atmospheric aqueous aerosol. A novel observation of the cleavage of a carbon-carbon bond in pyruvic acid and glyoxylic acid leading to their decarboxylation was made in the presence of ammonium salts but no decarboxylation was observed from oxalic acid. The empirical rate constants for decarboxylation were determined. The structure of the acid, ionic environment of solution and concentration of species found to affect the decarboxylation process. A tentative set of reaction mechanisms was proposed involving nucleophilic attack by ammonia on the carbonyl carbon leading to fragmentation of the carbon-carbon bond between the carbonyl and carboxyl carbons. Whereas, the formation of high molecular weight organic species was observed in the case of methylglyoxal. The elemental compositions of the species were determined. It was concluded that, additional pathways that are not currently known likely contribute to aqueous phase processing leading to high molecular weight organic species. Under similar conditions in atmospheric aerosol, the aqueous phase processing will markedly impact the physicochemical properties of aerosol.

The contents of this paper represent attempts to deposit the metal, manganese from sodium manganate solutions. The source of manganese was limited to the nodulized product from roasting rhodochrosite and was therefore chiefly manganese oxide.

A gold thiosulfate leaching process uses carbon to remove gold from the leach liquor. The activated carbon is pretreated with copper cyanide. A copper (on the carbon) to gold (in solution) ration of at least 1.5 optimizes gold recovery from solution. To recover the gold from the carbon, conventional elution technology works but is dependent on the copper to gold ratio on the carbon.

A mild and convenient synthesis of substituted α-methylene--valerolactones was achieved by SN2 nucleophilic substitution of the acetates of the Baylis-Hillman adducts with acetyl acetone followed by one-pot saponification of the ester, reduction of the keto group and subsequent intramolecular ring closure in aqueous medium.

We carried out a comprehensive study of Au(1 1 1) oxidation–reduction in the presence of (hydrogen-) sulfate ions on ideally smooth and stepped Au(S)[n(1 1 1)-(1 1 1)] single crystal electrodes using cyclic voltammetry, in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and vibration spectroscopy, such as surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) and shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS). Surface structure changes and the role of surface defects in the potential regions of double layer charging and gold oxidation/reduction are discussed based on cyclic voltammetry and in situ STM data. SEIRAS and SHINERS provide complementary information on the chemical nature of adsorbates. In particular, the potential-dependent formation and stability ranges of adsorbed sulfate, hydroxide-species and of gold surface oxide could be resolved in detail. Based on our experimental observations, we proposed new and extended mechanisms of gold surface oxidation and reduction in 1.0 M H2SO4 and 1.0 M Na2SO4.
