Prehnite-pumpellyite facies metamorphism is described in the oceanic-arc basement rocks of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 126, Site 791 in the Sumisu Rift, western Pacific. Chemical variations of pumpellyite, epidote, chlorite, and prehnite are examined and paragenetic relations discussed. The metamorphism took place during the pre-rifting stage of an intraoceanic arc. During the backarc rifting stage, the geothermal gradient of the area was not as high as that of a spreading mid-oceanic ridge.

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios (d13C and d15N) of organic matter were measured in three sediment cores from deep basins of the Bering Sea to investigate past changes in surface nutrient conditions. For surface water reconstructions, hemipelagic layers in the cores were distinguished from turbidite layers (on the basis of their sedimentary structures and 14C ages) and analyzed for isotopic studies. Although d13C profiles may have been affected by diagenesis, both d15N and d13C values showed common positive anomalies during the last deglaciation. We explain these anomalies as reflecting suppressed vertical mixing and low nutrient concentrations in surface waters caused by injection of meltwater from alpine glaciers around the Bering Sea.

Twenty-two trace elements in 355 sediment samples from Site 997 on the Blake Ridge were examined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, for respective fractions of acid-soluble and insoluble compositions. Downhole profiles of these elements exhibit complicated fluctuations throughout late Miocene to Pleistocene, principally due to the variations in the acid-soluble fraction. Noncarbonate composition is given from the acid-insoluble residues, which permits us to recognize secular feature of selected element variance for four intervals. These intervals (I: 0-183 mbsf; II: 183- 440 mbsf; III: 440-618 mbsf; and IV: 618-750 mbsf) are interpreted to have originated from changes in the suite of sediments of particular sources and chemical composition, sedimentation rate, dilution of biogenic carbonate abundance, and possibly the current system that controlled deposition and reworking of the terrigenous materials.

Since being first discovered in the Blake-Bahama region of the west Atlantic in the 1970s (Hollister, Ewing, et al., 1972, doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.11.1972), submarine gas hydrates have been identified in the continental margin worldwide. Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 was the first drilling designated to study the occurrence and distribution of natural gas hydrates in Blake Ridge where a well developed, distinct BSR (Bottom Simulating Reflector) has been identified (Paull, Matsumoto, Wallace, et al., 1996, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.164.1996). It has been reported there is a prominent discrepancy between the BSR and the base of gas hydrate stability (Paull, Matsumoto, Wallace, et al., 1996, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.164.1996; Ruppel, 1997, doi:10.1130/0091-7613(1997)025<0699:ACTOAT>2.3.CO;2), though theoretically they should be at the same depth. Natural gas hydrate in marine sediments coexists with sediment particles, so detailed delineation of sediment geochemistry will be of benefit to solve this apparent discrepancy. The main objectives of this study are to supply background data of the major chemical compositions of sediments from a hydrated sediment section.

Nineteen trace elements, including seven rare earth elements (REE's), and 10 major and minor elements in 76 sediment samples from Sites 798 (Oki Ridge) and 799 (Yamato Trough) were determined by means of instrumental neutron activation analysis and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Most REE patterns (chondrite-normalized) of the sediments from both sites were nearly identical to the patterns of terrigenous materials. The cerium anomaly (slightly positive) frequently appeared in REE patterns of the sediments (200-750 mbsf) from Site 799. Cerium may be selectively incorporated into the sediments with hydrogenous manganese precipitation. However, the degree of the anomaly was not well correlated with manganese content, suggesting that cerium may behave as a trivalent REE (like the other REE's) during diagenesis while manganese is transported in the sediment column accompanied by reduction to a lower oxidation state. The Th/Sc ratio of the sediments from Sites 798 and 799 tended to decrease with penetration depth. Such a depth profile may indicate a decrease in basic volcanism activities from the Pliocene (Site 798) and Miocene (Site 799). The La/Yb ratio and degree of europium anomaly also varied with depth, which may imply that two or more components with different REE patterns were supplied throughout sedimentation at sites in the Japan Sea.

The chemical composition of glass inclusions in phenocrystic plagioclase and pyroxene from Sites 792 and 793, drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 126 in the Bonin Arc, is examined. Immiscible liquid, which is preserved as glass inclusions with unmixed textures in plagioclase, is observed in a high-magnesian andesite, which suggests an important role of liquid immiscibility in the fractionation of high-magnesian andesite. In other andesitic rocks (SiO2 = 57-60 wt%), such unmixed textures of glass inclusions in calcic plagioclase with a similar percentage of An (around 80%) is not found. The degree of fractionation and mixing of liquid are inferred from the glass composition in pyroxene.
