Aggregates provide physical microenvironments for microorganisms, the vital actors of soil systems, and thus play a major role as both, an arena and a product of soil carbon stabilization and dynamics. The surface of an aggregate is what enables exchange of the materials and air and water fluxes between aggregate exterior and interior regions. We made use of 3D images from X-ray CT of aggregates and mathematical morphology to provide an exhaustive quantitative description of soil aggregate morphology that includes both intra-aggregate pore space structure and aggregate surface features. First, the evolution of Minkowski functionals (i.e. volume, boundary surface, curvature and connectivity) for successive dilations of the solid part of aggregates was investigated to quantify its 3D geometrical features. Second, the inner pore space was considered as the object of interest. We devised procedures (a) to define the ends of the accessible pores that are connected to the aggregate surface and (b) to separate accessible and inaccessible porosity. Geometrical Minkowski functionals of the intra-aggregate pore space provide the exhaustive characterization of the inner structure of the aggregates. Aggregates collected from two different soil treatments were analyzed to explore the utility of these morphological tools in capturing the impact on their morphology of two different soil managements, i.e. conventional tillage management, and native succession vegetation treatment. The quantitative tools of mathematical morphology distinguished differences in patterns of aggregate structure associated to the different soil managements.

The variability of the solar spectra in the field may reduce the annual energy yield of multijunction solar cells. It would, therefore, be desirable to implement a cell design procedure based on the maximization of the annual energy yield. In this study, we present a measurement technique to generate maps of the real performance of the solar cell for a range of light spectrum contents using a solar simulator with a computer-controllable spectral content. These performance maps are demonstrated to be a powerful tool for analyzing the characteristics of any given set of annual spectra representative of a site and their influence on the energy yield of any solar cell. The effect of luminescence coupling on buffering against variations of the spectrum and improving the annual energy yield is demonstrated using this method.

We report studies of energy transfer from the 800-nm absorbing pigment (B800) to the 850-nm absorbing pigment (B850) of the LH2 peripheral antenna complex and from LH2 to the core antenna complex (LH1) in Rhodobacter (Rb.) sphaeroides. The B800 to B850 process was studied in membranes from a LH2-reaction center (no LH1) mutant of Rb. sphaeroides and the LH2 to LH1 transfer was studied in both the wild-type species and in LH2 mutants with blue-shifted B850. The measurements were performed by using approximately 100-fs pulses to probe the formation of acceptor excitations in a two-color pump-probe measurement. Our experiments reveal a B800 to B850 transfer time of approximately 0.7 ps at 296 K and energy transfer from LH2 to LH1 is characterized by a time constant of approximately 3 ps at 296 K and approximately 5 ps at 77 K. In the blue-shifted B850 mutants, the transfer time from B850 to LH1 becomes gradually longer with increasing blue-shift of the B850 band as a result of the decreasing spectral overlap between the antennae. The results have been used to produce a model for the association between the ring-like structures that are characteristic of both the LH2 and LH1 antennae.

Colors of special-effect coatings have strong dependence on illumination/viewing geometry and an appealing appearance. An open question is to ask about the minimum number of measurement geometries required to completely characterize their observed color shift. A recently published principal components analysis (PCA)-based procedure to estimate the color of special-effect coatings at any geometry from measurements at a reduced set of geometries was tested in this work by using the measurement geometries of commercial portable multiangle spectrophotometers X-Rite MA98, Datacolor FX10, and BYK-mac as reduced sets. The performance of the proposed PCA procedure for the color-shift estimation for these commercial geometries has been examined for 15 special-effect coatings. Our results suggest that for rendering the color appearance of 3D objects covered with special-effect coatings, the color accuracy obtained with this procedure may be sufficient. This is the case especially if geometries of X-Rite MA98 or Datacolor FX10 are used.

This dataset consists of 2D footprints of the buildings in the metropolitan Boston area, based on tiles in the orthoimage index (orthophoto quad ID: 229890, 229894, 229898, 229902, 233886, 233890, 233894, 233898, 233902, 237890, 237894, 237898, 237902, 241890, 241894, 241898, 241902, 245898, 245902). This data set was collected using 3Di's Digital Airborne Topographic Imaging System II (DATIS II). Roof height and footprint elevation attributes (derived from 1-meter resolution LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) data) are included as part of each building feature. This data can be combined with other datasets to create 3D representations of buildings and the surrounding environment.
