Generation of bandwidth-limited 2 ps pulses with 100 GHz repetition rate from multisegmented injection laser

A new dynamic regime in a multisegmented AlGaAs/GaAs DH injection laser has been realised. Generation of bandwidth-limited 100 GHz repetition rate pulses has been demonstrated. This value is claimed to be the largest ever reported for an ultrashort pulse repetition frequency obtained directly from a laser.

草鱼尾鳍组织二倍体细胞系GCCF-2的建立及其部分生物学特性分析

本文从草鱼尾鳍组织建立了一个二倍体细胞系GCCF-2。该细胞系用TC-199培养液加15％小牛血清培养。细胞生长旺盛,最高分裂指数达30.04‰。现已在体外培养近92个月。细胞在28℃生长良好。染色体检查表明,GCCF-2为二倍体细胞系。初步估计其细胞周期为21—33小时。GCCF-2对草鱼呼肠弧病毒(GCRV)敏感,并在细胞中发现病毒颗粒。

2.1 GHz MOS mixer linearisation approach for IIP2 enhancement using multiple factor compensation

An integrated downconversion CMOS mixer incorporating a comprehensive compensation scheme is presented which aims to minimise second-order intermodulation distortion (IMD2). Unlike previously reported IMD2 calibration schemes which tune only one nonlinear factor at a time, the presented solution allows simultaneous adjustment of several different factors thus achieving a better compensation. The mixer has been implemented in UMC 0.18 μm CMOS to verify the proposed scheme and for comparison with alternative compensation methods. Measurements show that the solution described can improve the input intercept point (IIP2) by over 20 dB while maintaining good amplification and noise performance. IMD2 calibration results are presented and show useful advantages over other approaches. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this scheme for IMD2 calibration has not been previously reported. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2013.

2 to 3 μm Raman-soliton continuum enabled by a nanotube mode-locked Tm-doped MOPFA

An integrated 2-D model of a lithium ion battery: The effect of material parameters and morphology on storage particle stress

An integrated 2-D model of a lithium ion battery is developed to study the mechanical stress in storage particles as a function of material properties. A previously developed coupled stress-diffusion model for storage particles is implemented in 2-D and integrated into a complete battery system. The effect of morphology on the stress and lithium concentration is studied for the case of extraction of lithium in terms of previously developed non-dimensional parameters. These non-dimensional parameters include the material properties of the storage particles in the system, among other variables. We examine particles functioning in isolation as well as in closely-packed systems. Our results show that the particle distance from the separator, in combination with the material properties of the particle, is critical in predicting the stress generated within the particle. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Corrugated all-composite sandwich structures. Part 2: Failure mechanisms and experimental programme

A novel corrugated composite core, referred to as a hierarchical corrugation, has been developed and tested experimentally. Hierarchical corrugations exhibit a range of different failure modes depending on the geometrical properties and the material properties of the structures. In order to understand the different failure modes the analytical strength model, developed in part 1 of this paper, was used to make collapse mechanism maps for the different corrugation configurations. If designed correctly, the hierarchical structures can have more than 7 times higher weight specific strength compared to its monolithic counter part. The difference in strength arises mainly from the increase in buckling resistance of the sandwich core members compared to the monolithic version. The highest difference in strength is seen for core configurations with low overall density. As the density of the core increases, the monolithic core members get stockier and more resistant to buckling and thus the benefits of the hierarchical structure reduces. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Morphological and ultrastructural changes in tobacco BY-2 cells exposed to microcystin-RR

Tobacco BY-2 cells were exposed to microcystin-RR (MC-RR) at two concentrations, 60 mu g mL(-1) and 120 mu g mL(-1), to study the changes in morphology and ultrastructure of cells as a result of the exposure. Exposure to the lower concentration for 5 d led to typical apoptotic morphological changes including condensation of nuclear chromatin, creation of a characteristic 'half moon' structure, and cytoplasm shrinkage and decreased cell volume, as revealed through light microscopy. fluorescence microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. Exposure to the higher concentration, on the other hand, led to morphological and ultrastructural changes typical of necrosis, such as rupture of the plasma membrane and the nuclear membrane and a marked swelling of cells. The presence of many vacuoles containing unusual deposits points to the involvement of vacuoles in detoxifying MC-RR. Results of the present study indicate that exposure of tobacco BY-2 cells to MC-RR at a lower concentration (60 mu g mL(-1)) results in apoptosis and that to a higher concentration (120 mu g mL(-1)), in necrosis. Waterborne exposure to fluorotelomer alcohol 6:2 FTOH alters plasma sex hormone and gene transcription in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis of zebrafish

Fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) have shown estrogenic activity in vitro and in vivo, but the mechanism of this activity is not known. In this study, 18-week-old zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to 0, 0.03, 0.3 and 3.0 mg/l 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctan-1-ol (6:2 ETCH) for 7 days, and the effects on plasma sex hormone levels were measured followed by use of real-time PCR to examine selected gene expression in hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and liver. Exposure to 6:2 FTOH significantly increased plasma estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) levels in both males and females. Furthermore, the ratio of T/E2 was reduced in females while increased in males. In females, the increase of E2 was accompanied by up-regulated hepatic estrogenic receptor alpha (ER alpha) and vitellogenin (VTG1 and VTG3) expression. In males, the elevation of the T level is consistent with the up-regulation of cytochrome P450 c17 alpha-hydroxylase, 17, 20-lase (CYP17) and the down-regulation of cytochrome P450 aromatase A (CYP19A). The present study demonstrated that waterborne exposure to 6:2 FTOH alter plasma sex hormone levels and the ratio of T/E2, as well as the transcriptional profiles of some genes in the HPG axis and liver. Isolation and characterization of Argonaute 2: A key gene of the RNA interference pathway in the rare minnow, Gobiocypris rarus

Argonaute 2 gene plays a pivotal role in RNAi in many species. Herein is the first report of the cloning and characterization of Argonaute 2 gene in fish. The full-length cDNA of Gobiocypris rarus Argonaute 2 (GrAgo2) consisted of 3073 nucleotides encoding 869 amino acid residues with a calculated molecular weight of 98.499 kDa and an estimated isoelectric point of 9.18. Analysis of the deduced amino acid sequence showed the presence of two signature domains, PAZ and Piwi. RT-PCR analysis indicated that GrAgo2 mRNA expression could be detected in widespread tissues. After infection with grass carp reovirus, GrAgo2 expression was up-regulated from 12 h post-injection (p < 0.05) and returned to control levels at 48 h post-injection (p > 0.05). These data imply that GrAgo2 is involved in antiviral defense in rare minnow. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Transient terahertz spectroscopy of mono- and tri-layer CVD-grown MoS 2

Comparative analysis of static and switching performance of 1.2 kV commercial SiC transistors for high power density applications

This paper presents a critical comparison of static and switching performance of commercially available 1.2 kV SiC BJTs, MOSFETs and JFETs with 1.2 kV Si IGBTs. The experiments conducted are mainly focussed on investigating the temperature dependence of device performance. As an emerging commercial device, special emphasis is placed on SiC BJTs. The experimental data indicate that the SiC BJTs have relatively smaller conduction, off-state and turn-off switching losses, in comparison to the other devices. Furthermore, SiC BJTs have demonstrated much higher static current gain values in comparison to their silicon counterparts, thereby minimising driver losses. Based on the results, the suitability of SiC devices for high power density applications has been discussed. © 2013 IEEE.

Staphylococcus aureus lipoproteins trigger human corneal epithelial innate response through toll-like receptor-2

Bacterial lipoproteins (LP) are a family of cell wall components found in a wide variety of bacteria. In this study, we characterized the response of HUCL, a telomerase-immortalized human corneal epithelial cell (HCEC) line, to LP isolated from Staphylococcus (S) aureus. S. aureus LP (saLP) prepared by Triton X-114 extraction stimulated the activation of NF-kappa B, JNK, and P38 signaling pathways in HUCL cells. The extracts failed to stimulate NF-kappa B activation in HUCL cells after lipoprotein lipase treatment and in cell lines expressing TLR4 or TLR9, but not TLR2, indicating lipoprotein nature of the extracts. saLP induced the up-regulation of a variety of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines (IL-6, IL-8, ICAM-1). antimicrobial molecules (hBD-2, LL-37, and iNOS), and homeostasis genes (Mn-SOD) at both the mRNA level and protein level. Similar inflammatory response to saLP was also observed in primarily cultured HCECs using the production of IL-6 as readout. Moreover, TLR2 neutralizing antibody blocked the saLP-induced secretion of IL-6, IL-8 and hBD2 in HUCL cells. Our findings suggest that saLP activates TLR2 and triggers innate immune response in the cornea to S. aureus infection via production of proinflammatory cytokines and defense molecules.
