The vibrationally resolved spectra of selected rotamers of m-aminophenol have been recorded by mass analyzed threshold ionization spectroscopy in connection with two-color resonant two-photon excitation scheme. The adiabatic ionization energies of the cis and trans rotamers are 61460 +/- 5 and 61734 +/- 5 cm(-1), respectively. The frequencies of modes 1 (breathing) and 18a (in-plane CH bending) are measured to be 744 and 1097 cm(-1) for the cis, and 736 and 1104 cm(-1) for the trans rotamer, respectively. This indicates that different orientation of the OH with respect to the NH2 substituent only slightly influences these two modes. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The catalytic properties of the passivated, reduced passivated, and fresh bulk molybdenum nitride for hydrazine decomposition were evaluated in a microreactor. The reaction route of hydrazine decomposition over molybdenum nitride catalysts seems to be the same as that of Ir/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts. Below 673 K, the hydrazine decomposes into N-2 and NH3. Above 673 K, the hydrazine decomposes into N-2 and NH3 first, and then the produced NH3 further dissociates into N-2 and H-2. From the in situ FT-IR spectroscopy, hydrazine is adsorbed and decomposes mainly on the Mo site of the Mo2N/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with electron ionization and positive-ion chemical ionization and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC x GC-TOF-MS) were applied for the characterization of the chemical composition of complex hydrocarbons in the non-polar neutral fraction of cigarette smoke condensates. Automated data processing by TOF-MS software combined with structured chromatograms and manual review of library hits were used to assign the components from GC x GC-TOF-MS analysis. The distributions of aliphatic hydrocarbons and aromatics were also investigated. Over 100 isoprenoid hydrocarbons were detected, including carotene degradation products, phytadiene isomers and carbocyclic diterpenoids. A total of 1800 hydrocarbons were tentatively identified, including aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatics, and isoprenoid hydrocarbons. The identified hydrocarbons by GC x GC-TOF-MS were far more than those by GC-MS. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Cluster assisted photoionization processes of benzene, which was seeded in argon, induced by an intense 25 ns Nd-YAG laser has been studied by means of time-of-flight mass spectrometry. At the laser intensity of 10(11) W/cm(2), multicharged ions Cq+ (q = 2-3) with kinetic energy up to 150 eV were observed in the mass spectra. Strong evidences Support that these ions are formed in the Coulomb explosion of multicharged benzene cluster ions. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Geometry optimization and harmonic vibrational frequency calculations have been performed on the (X) over bar (2)A(1) state of NO2 and (X) over bar (1)A(1) state of NO2-. Franck-Condon analyses and spectral simulations were carried out on the NO2((X) over bar (2)A(1))-NO2-((X) over bar (1)A(1)) photo detachment process. In addition, the equilibrium geometry parameters, r(NO)= 1.248 +/- 0.005 Angstrom and angle(ONO) 116.8 +/- 0.5degrees, of the (X) over bar (1)A(1) state of NO2-, are derived by employing an iterative Franck-Condon analysis procedure in the spectral simulation. Our conclusions regarding the anion geometry suggest a reinterpretation of the results of Woo et al. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

A theoretical method to calculate multidimensional Franck-Condon factors including Duschinsky effects is described and used to simulate the photoelectron spectra of HCF- and CF2- radicals. Geometry optimization and harmonic vibrational frequency calculations have been performed on the (X) over tilde (1)A' state of HCF and (X) over tilde (2)A" state of HCF-, and (X) over tilde (1)A(1) state of CF2 and (X) over tilde B-2(1) state of CF2-. Franck-Condon analyses and spectral simulation were carried out on the first photoelectron band of HCF- and CF2- respectively. The theoretical spectra obtained by employing B3LYP/6-311 + G(2d,p) values are in excellent agreement with the observed ones. In addition, the equilibrium geometry parameters, R(CF) = 0.1475 +/- 0.0005 nm, of the (X) over tilde (2)A" state of HCF-, and r(FC) = 0.1425 +/- 0.0005 nm and angle(FCF) = 100.5 +/- 0.5degrees, of the (X) over tilde B-2(i) state of CF2-, are derived by employing an iterative Franck-Condon analysis procedure in the spectral simulation. To avoid the limitation of the widely used prediction methods of soil organic carbon partition coefficients (K-OC) from hydrophobic parameters, e.g., the n-octanol/water partition coefficients (K-OW) and the reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) retention factors, the soil column liquid chromatographic (SCLC) method was developed for K-OC prediction. The real soils were used as the packing materials of RP-HPLC columns, and the correlations between the retention factors of organic compounds on soil columns (k(soil)) and K-OC measured by batch equilibrium method were studied. Good correlations were achieved between k(soil) and K-OC for three types of soils with different properties. All the square of the correlation coefficients (R-2) of the linear regression between log k(soi) and log K-OC were higher than 0.89 with standard deviations of less than 0.21. In addition, the prediction of K-OC from K-OW and the RP-HPLC retention factors on cyanopropyl (CN) stationary phase (k(CN)) was comparatively evaluated for the three types of soils. The results show that the prediction of K-OC from k(CN) and K-OW is only applicable to some specific types of soils. The results obtained in the present study proved that the SCLC method is appropriate for the K-OC prediction for different types of soils, however the applicability of using hydrophobic parameters to predict K-OC largely depends on the properties of soil concerned. A flow injection system for the determination of organophosphate and carbamate pesticides is described. A sensitive fluorescence probe was synthesized and used as the pH indicator to detect the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (ACNE). The percentage inhibition of enzyme activity is correlated to the pesticide concentration. Several parameters influencing the performance of the system are discussed. The detection limits of 3.5, 50, 12 and 25 mug/l for carbofuran, carbaryl, paraoxon and dichlorvos, in pure water, respectively were achieved with an incubation time of 10 min. A complete cycle of analysis, including incubation time, took 14 min. The detection system has been applied to the determination of carbofuran in spiked vegetable juices (Chinese cabbage and cole), achieving recovery values between 93.2 and 107% for Chinese cabbage juice and 108 and 118% for cole juice at the different concentration levels assayed.
