Two informationally equivalent texts were constructed which described a fictitious town, emphasizing its spatial layout. In one version (Survey text), spatial information was in geographic terms, while in the other version (Route text), the equivalent information was provided in the form of directions for driving through the town. Subjects recalled these texts and verified old as well as inference statements. In Experiment I, subjects were able to recall the texts quite well, while showing little ability to use the information they had acquired to make inferences about spatial relations in the town which had not been directly stated in the text. With simpler texts, subjects in Experiment II were able to make infereces, especially when the form of the question corresponded to the version of the text they had read. It was concluded that free recall depended on the construction of a propositional textbase during comprehension, while inferences required a situation model, either in the form of a mental map or a procedural representation of the town. It could be shown that the form of the situation model depended on both the representation invited by the text and subject biases.

BACKGROUND Recurrent urticaria (RU) is a common skin disease of horses, but little is known about its pathogenesis. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to characterize the inflammatory cell infiltrate and cytokine expression pattern in the skin of horses with RU. ANIMALS   Biopsies of lesional and nonlesional skin of horses with RU (n = 8) and of skin from healthy control horses (n = 8) were evaluated. METHODS The inflammatory cell infiltrate was analysed by routine histology. Immunohistochemistry was used to identify T cells (CD3), B  ells (CD79), macrophages (MAC387) and mast cells (tryptase). Expression of T-helper 2 cytokines (interleukins IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13), a T-helper 1 cytokine (interferon-γ), IL-4 receptor α and thymic stromal lymphopoietin was assessed by quantitative RT-PCR. Results -  In subepidermal lesional skin of RU-affected horses, increased numbers of eosinophils (P ≤ 0.01), CD79-positive (P ≤ 0.01), MAC387-positive (P ≤ 0.01) and tryptase-positive cells (P ≤ 0.05) were found compared with healthy horses. Subepidermal lesional skin of RU-affected horses contained more eosinophils (P ≤ 0.05) and tryptase-positive cells (P ≤ 0.05) compared with nonlesional skin. There was no significant difference in infiltrating cells between nonlesional skin and skin of healthy horses. Expression of IL-4 (P ≤ 0.01), IL-13 (P ≤ 0.05), thymic stromal lymphopoietin (P ≤ 0.05) and IL-4 receptor α (P ≤ 0.05) was increased in lesional skin of RU-affected horses compared with control horses. Expression of IL-4 was higher (P ≤ 0.05) in lesional compared with nonlesional RU skin. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Analysis of cytokine expression and inflammatory infiltrate suggests that T-helper 2 cytokines, eosinophils, mast cells and presumptive macrophages play a role in the pathogenesis of equine RU.

This article discusses the manuscript transmission of Chrétien’s Roman de Perceval ou le Conte du Graal and Wolfram’s Parzival in terms of their textual tradition and editorial criticism. It shows that the most recent edition of the Old French Perceval (K. Busby 1993) can be viewed as a landmark of the art of conventional editing that appeared at the peak of the discussion of ‘New Philology’ and took its own position in this context. At the same time, the Perceval was subject of critical studies based on the principle of ‘unrooted trees’ that questioned the genealogical concept of traditional ‘Lachmannian’ stemmatology. Conversely, a new edition of Wolfram’s Parzival, based on all known manuscripts, remained a desideratum for decades in German studies. Specific research on the textual tradition played a rather marginal role for a long time, but has been reinforced in the recent years in the context of a new critical edition presenting the totality of manuscripts as well as different textual versions in electronic form. The concept of ‘unrooted trees’ visualizing relationships of manuscript readings can be integrated in this concept. The article gives an overview of these methods, presents examples of editorial techniques, and develops ideas on how to combine the research on the manuscript tradition of both the German text and its French counterpart.
