Increasing food production to feed its rapidly growing population is a major policy goal of Pakistan. The production of traditional staples such as rice (Oryza sativa L.) and bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) has been intensified in many regions, but not in remote, drought-ridden areas. In these arid, marginal environments dates and their by-products are an option to complement staples given their high nutritive value and storability. To fill knowledge gaps about the role of date palm in the household (HH) income of rural communities and the structure of date value chains, this project studied date palm production across six districts in four provinces of Pakistan. During 2012–2013 a total of 170 HHs were interviewed with a structured questionnaire using a snowball sampling approach. The results showed that most of the HH were headed by males (99 %) who were married (74 %) and often illiterate (40 %). Agriculture was the main occupation of date palm growers (56 %), while a few coupled agricultural activities with business (17 %) or extra-farm employment opportunities (government 9 %; private sector 8 %). Date sales contributed >50 % to the total income of 39 % of HH and 90–100 % to 24 % of HH. Overall farmers grew a total of 39 date palm cultivars and cultivated an average of 409 ± 559 mature date palms. The majority of the respondents sold dates to commission agents (35 %), contractors (22 %) and wholesalers (21 %), while 28 % of HH cultivated date palms only for self-consumption. Date palm growers had only limited knowledge about high quality date cultivars, optimized farm management and about effective post-harvest conservation. Changes in extension and marketing efforts are needed to allow farmers to better exploit value chains in date thereby reaping higher benefits from improved market access to secure their often marginal income.

Background: The transport of children in ground ambulances is a rarely studied topic worldwide. The ambulance vehicle is a unique and complex environment with particular challenges for the safe, correct and effective transportation of patients. Unlike the well developed and readily available guidelines on the safe transportation of a child in motor vehicles, there is a lack on consistent specifications for transporting children in ambulances. Nurses are called daily to transfer children to hospitals or other care centers, so safe transport practices should be a major concern. Purpose: to know which are the safety precautions and specific measures used in the transport of children in ground ambulances by nurses and firefighters and to identify what knowledge these professionals had about safe modes of children transportation in ground ambulances. Methods: In this context, an exploratory - descriptive study and quantitative analysis was conducted. A questionnaire was completed by 135 nurses and firefighters / ambulance crew based on 4 possible children transport scenarios proposed by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and covered 5 different children´s age groups (new born children, 1 to 12 months; 1 to 3 years old; 4 to 7 years old and 8 to 12 years old). Results: The main results showed a variety of safety measures used by the professionals and a significant difference between their actual mode of transportation and the mode they consider to be the ideal considering security goals. In addition, findings showed that achieved scores related to what ambulance crews do in the considered scenarios reflect mostly satisfactory levels of transportation rather than optimum levels of safety, according to NHTSA recommendations. Variables as gender, educational qualifications, occupational group and local where professionals work seem to influence the transport options. Female professionals and nurses from pediatric units appear to do a safer transportation of children in ground ambulances than other professionals. Conclusion: Several professionals refereed unawareness of the safest transportation options for children in ambulances and did not to know the existence of specific recommendations for this type of transportation. The dispersion of the results suggests the need for investment in professional training and further regulation for this type of transportation.

In organic and biodynamic vineyards, canopy management practices should be carefully and timely modulated, particularly in a context of climate change, for successfully achieving balanced plants, ventilated and exposed berries, elevated grape and wine quality. In 2013 and 2014, characterized by contrasting climatic conditions, the implications of post-veraison (late) or pea-size trimming, post-veraison or pre-harvest late defoliations and shoot-positioning (post-veraison) were assessed against long-shoots non treated controls, under field conditions on organically-cultivated cv. Sangiovese. The key agronomic and enological relevance of late trimming and defoliations clearly emerged in both seasons. Berry skin phenolics (e.g. anthocyanins, flavonols) increased markedly, without changes in technological parameters. In case of early trimming, such positive effects were observed only in 2013. Maintaining long shoots for shading decreased anthocyanins, flavonols and total phenolics concentrations and promoted the production of compact bunches. Experimental data strongly designated late trimming, a practice proved to contain yield and bunch compactness, as a valuable alternative to cluster thinning. Late trimming, defoliations and shoot positioning reduced the severity of Botrytis cluster rot. The highest levels of berry skins phenolic compounds in late trimmed and defoliated plants could have contributed control the severity of this pathogen. The enological benefits induced by late trimming and defoliations and shoot positioning emerged in both young and aged wines. For the first time, cell cultures from cv. Sangiovese berry tissues were obtained and enabled to investigate, in controlled conditions, the relations between mechanisms regulating secondary metabolism in grapevine cells and changes induced by environmental and agronomic factors. The Doctoral Dissertation strongly highlights the need to consider, for a proper interpretation of the multiple modifications induced by canopy management strategies, physiological mechanisms other than the canonic source-sink relationships, in particular their impact on the vine hormonal status.

To ensure food safety and to prevent food-borne illnesses, rapid and accurate detection of pathogenic agents is essential. It has already been demonstrated that shotgun metagenomic sequencing can be used to detect pathogens and their antibiotic resistance genes in food. In the studies presented in this thesis, the application shotgun metagenomic sequencing has been applied to investigate both the microbiome and resistome of foods of animal origin in order to assess advantages and disadvantages of shotgun metagenomic sequencing in comparison to the cultural methods. In the first study, it has been shown that shotgun metagenomics can be applied to detect microorganisms experimentally spiked in cold-smoked salmon. Nevertheless, a direct correlation between cell concentration of each spiked microorganism and number of corresponding reads cannot be established yet. In the second and third studies, the microbiomes and resistomes characterizing caeca and the corresponding carcasses of the birds reared in the conventional and antibiotic free farms were compared. The results highlighted the need to reduce sources of microbial contamination and antimicrobial resistance not only at the farm level but also at the post-harvest one. In the fourth study, it has been demonstrated that testing a single aliquot of a food homogenate is representative of the whole homogenate because biological replicates displayed overlapping taxonomic and functional composition. All in all, the results obtained confirmed that the application of shotgun metagenomic sequencing represents a powerful tool that can be used in the identification of both spoilage and pathogenic microorganism, and their resistome in foods of animal origin. However, a robust relationship between sequence read abundance and concentration of colony-forming unit must be still established.

There are only a few insights concerning the influence that agronomic and management variability may have on superficial scald (SS) in pears. Abate Fétel pears were picked during three seasons (2018, 2019 and 2020) from thirty commercial orchards in the Emilia Romagna region, Italy. Using a multivariate statistical approach, high heterogeneity between farms for SS development after cold storage with regular atmosphere was demonstrated. Indeed, some factors seem to affect SS in all growing seasons: high yields, soil texture, improper irrigation and Nitrogen management, use of plant growth regulators, late harvest, precipitations, Calcium and cow manure, presence of nets, orchard age, training system and rootstock. Afterwards, we explored the spatio/temporal variability of fruit attributes in two pear orchards. Environmental and physiological spatial variables were recorded by a portable RTK GPS. High spatial variability of the SS index was observed. Through a geostatistical approach, some characteristics, including soil electrical conductivity and fruit size, have been shown to be negatively correlated with SS. Moreover, regression tree analyses were applied suggesting the presence of threshold values of antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, and acidity against SS. High pulp firmness and IAD values before storage, denoting a more immature fruit, appeared to be correlated with low SS. Finally, a convolution neural networks (CNN) was tested to detect SS and the starch pattern index (SPI) in pears for portable device applications. Preliminary statistics showed that the model for SS had low accuracy but good precision, and the CNN for SPI denoted good performances compared to the Ctifl and Laimburg scales. The major conclusion is that Abate Fétel pears can potentially be stored in different cold rooms, according to their origin and quality features, ensuring the best fruit quality for the final consumers. These results might lead to a substantial improvement in the Italian pear industry.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has been designed to help promote a view in favor of the interests of individuals instead of large corporations. However, there is the need of more dedicated technologies that can help companies comply with GDPR while enabling people to exercise their rights. We argue that such a dedicated solution must address two main issues: the need for more transparency towards individuals regarding the management of their personal information and their often hindered ability to access and make interoperable personal data in a way that the exercise of one's rights would result in straightforward. We aim to provide a system that helps to push personal data management towards the individual's control, i.e., a personal information management system (PIMS). By using distributed storage and decentralized computing networks to control online services, users' personal information could be shifted towards those directly concerned, i.e., the data subjects. The use of Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs) and Decentralized File Storage (DFS) as an implementation of decentralized systems is of paramount importance in this case. The structure of this dissertation follows an incremental approach to describing a set of decentralized systems and models that revolves around personal data and their subjects. Each chapter of this dissertation builds up the previous one and discusses the technical implementation of a system and its relation with the corresponding regulations. We refer to the EU regulatory framework, including GDPR, eIDAS, and Data Governance Act, to build our final system architecture's functional and non-functional drivers. In our PIMS design, personal data is kept in a Personal Data Space (PDS) consisting of encrypted personal data referring to the subject stored in a DFS. On top of that, a network of authorization servers acts as a data intermediary to provide access to potential data recipients through smart contracts.

Emissions of CO2 are constantly growing since the beginning of industrial era. Interruption of the production of major emitters sectors (energy and agriculture) is not a viable way and reducing all the emission through carbon capture and storage (CCS) is not economically viable and little publicly accepted, therefore, it becomes fundamentals to take actions like retrofitting already developed infrastructure employing cleanest resources, modify the actual processes limiting the emissions, and reduce the emissions already present through direct air capture. The present thesis will deeply discuss the aspects mentioned in regard to syngas and hydrogen production since they have a central role in the market of energy and chemicals. Among the strategies discussed, greater emphasis is given to the application of looping technologies and to direct air capture processes, as they have been the main point of this work. Particularly, chemical looping methane reforming to syngas was studied with Aspen Plus thermodynamic simulations, thermogravimetric analysis characterization (TGA) and testing in a fixed bed reactor. The process was studied cyclically exploiting the redox properties of a Ce-based oxide oxygen carrier synthetized with a simple forming procedure. The two steps of the looping cycles were studied isothermally at 900 °C and 950° C with a mixture of 10 %CH4 in N2 and of 3% O2 in N2, for carrier reduction and oxidation, respectively. During the stay abroad, in collaboration with the EHT of Zurich, a CO2 capture process in presence of amine solid sorbents was investigated, studying the difference in the performance achievable with the use of contactors of different geometry. The process was studied at two concentrations (382 ppm CO2 in N2 and 5.62% CO2 in N2) and at different flow rates, to understand the dynamics of the adsorption process and to define the mass transfer limiting step.

Throughout the years, technology has had an undeniable impact on the AVT field. It has revolutionized the way audiovisual content is consumed by allowing audiences to easily access it at any time and on any device. Especially after the introduction of OTT streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, and HBO Max, which offer a vast catalog of national and international products, the consumption of audiovisual products has been on a constant rise and, consequently, the demand for localized content too. In turn, the AVT industry resorts to new technologies and practices to handle the ever-growing workload and the faster turnaround times. Due to the numerous implications that it has on the industry, technological advancement can be considered an area of research of particular interest for the AVT studies. However, in the case of dubbing, research and discussion regarding the topic is lagging behind because of the more limited impact that technology has had on the very conservative dubbing industry. Therefore, the aim of the dissertation is to offer an overview of some of the latest technological innovations and practices that have already been implemented (i.e. cloud dubbing and DeepDub technology) or that are still under development and research (i.e. automatic speech recognition and respeaking, machine translation and post-editing, audio-based and visual-based dubbing techniques, text-based editing of talking-head videos, and automatic dubbing), and respectively discuss their reception by the industry professionals, and make assumptions about their future implementation in the dubbing field.

The current environmental and socio-economic situation promotes the development of carbon-neutral and sustainable solutions for energy supply. In this framework, the use of hydrogen has been largely indicated as a promising alternative. However, safety aspects are of concern for storage and transportation technologies. Indeed, the current know-how promotes its transportation via pipeline as compressed gas. However, the peculiar properties of hydrogen make the selection of suitable materials challenging. For these reasons, dilution with less reactive species has been considered a short and medium solution. As a way of example, methane-hydrogen mixtures are currently transported via pipelines. In this case, the hydrogen content is limited to 20% in volume, thus keeping the dependence on natural gas sources. On the contrary, hydrogen can be conveniently transported by mixing it with carbon dioxide deriving from carbon capture and storage technologies. In this sense, the interactions between hydrogen and carbon dioxide have been poorly studied. In particular, the effects of composition and operative conditions in the case of accidental release or for direct use in the energy supply chain are unknown. For these reasons, the present work was devoted to the characterization of the chemical phenomena ruling the system. To this aim, laminar flames containing hydrogen and carbon dioxide in the air were investigated experimentally and numerically. Different detailed kinetic mechanisms largely validated were considered at this stage. Significant discrepancies were observed among numerical and experimental data, especially once a fuel consisting of 40%v of hydrogen was studied. This deviation was attributed to the formation of a cellular flame increasing the overall reactivity. Hence, this observation suggests the need for combined models accounting for peculiar physical phenomena and detailed kinetic mechanisms characterizing the hydrogen-containing flames.

In the framework of the energy transition, the acquisition of proper knowledge of fundamental aspects characterizing the use of alternative fuels is paramount as well as the development of optimized know-how and technologies. In this sense, the use of hydrogen has been indicated as a promising route for decarbonization at the end-users stage in the energy supply chain. However, the elevated reactivity and the low-density at atmospheric conditions of hydrogen pose new challenges. Among the others, the dilution of hydrogen with carbon dioxide from carbon capture and storage systems represents a possible route. However, the interactions between these species have been poorly studied so far. For these reasons, this thesis, in collaboration between the University of Bologna and Technische Universität Bergakademie of Freiberg in Saxony (Germany), investigates the laminar flame of hydrogen-based premixed gas with the dilution of carbon dioxide. An experimental system, called a heat flux burner, was adopted ad different operating conditions. The presence of the cellularity phenomenon, forming the so-called cellular flame, was observed and analysed. Theoretical and visual methods have allowed for the characterization of the investigated flames, opening new alternatives for sustainable energy production via hydrogen transformation.
