The WASP project and infrastructure supporting the SuperWASP Facility are described. As the instrument, reduction pipeline and archive system are now fully operative we expect the system to have a major impact in the discovery of bright exo-planet candidates as well in more general variable star projects.

This paper provides an overview of the current field in wireless networks for monitoring and control. Alternative wireless technologies are introduced, together with current typical industrial applications. The focus then shifts to wireless Ethernet and the specialised requirements for wireless networked control systems (WNCS) are discussed. This is followed by a brief look at some current WNCS research, including reduced communication control.

Clustering analysis of data from DNA microarray hybridization studies is an essential task for identifying biologically relevant groups of genes. Attribute cluster algorithm (ACA) has provided an attractive way to group and select meaningful genes. However, ACA needs much prior knowledge about the genes to set the number of clusters. In practical applications, if the number of clusters is misspecified, the performance of the ACA will deteriorate rapidly. In fact, it is a very demanding to do that because of our little knowledge. We propose the Cooperative Competition Cluster Algorithm (CCCA) in this paper. In the algorithm, we assume that both cooperation and competition exist simultaneously between clusters in the process of clustering. By using this principle of Cooperative Competition, the number of clusters can be found in the process of clustering. Experimental results on a synthetic and gene expression data are demonstrated. The results show that CCCA can choose the number of clusters automatically and get excellent performance with respect to other competing methods.

Subterranean mammals (those that live and forage underground) inhabit a challenging microenvironment, with high levels of carbon dioxide and low levels of oxygen. Consequently, they have evolved specialised morphological and physiological adaptations. For small mammals that inhabit high altitudes, the effects of cold are compounded by low oxygen partial pressures. Hence, subterranean mammals living at high altitudes are faced with a uniquely demanding physiological environment, which presumably necessitates additional physiological adjustments. We examined the thermoregulatory capabilities of two populations of Lesotho mole-rat Cryptomys hottentotus mahali that inhabit a 'low' (1600 in) and a 'high' (3200 m) altitude. Mole-rats from the high altitude had a lower temperature of the lower critical point, a broader thermoneutral zone, a lower thermal conductance and greater regulatory non-shivering thermogenesis than animals from the lower altitude. However, minimum resting metabolic rate values were not significantly different between the populations and were low compared with allometric predictions. We suggest that thermoregulatory costs may in part be met by animals maintaining a low resting metabolic rate. High-altitude animals may adjust to their cooler, more oxygen-deficient environment by having an increased non-shivering thermogenesis whilst maintaining low thermal conductance. Morphological investigations identified 11 Ceramium Roth species, of the 18 previously reported from Brazil. Phylogenetic analyses of sequences of the chloroplast-encoded rbcL gene confirmed the presence of seven of these species. Three other species are reported from Brazil for the first time. Ceramium affine Setchell & Gardner and C. filicula Harvey ex Womersley were previously known only from the Pacific Ocean (Mexico and Australia, respectively). A new species, C. fujianum Barros-Barreto et Maggs sp. nov., is described here. Its general habit is similar to that of C. strictum sensu Harvey from Europe but it has one less periaxial cell than C. strictum; its cortical filament arrangement is closest to C. deslongchampsii Chauvin ex Duby, also from Europe, but whorled tetrasporangia partially covered by cortical cells differ strikingly from the naked protruding tetrasporangia of C. deslongchampsii. Ceramium species in which each periaxial cell cuts off transversely only a single basipetal cell formed a robust clade. The genus Ceramium as represented in Brazil is not monophyletic with respect to Centroceras Kutzing and Corallophila Weber-van Bosse; Ceramium nitens, which has axial cells completely covered by rounded cortical cells formed by acropetal and basipetal filaments, did not group with any Ceramium clade but was weakly allied to a species of Corallophila. All three Brazilian Centroceras sequences were attributed to a single species, C. clavulatum.

For the first time, the electrochemistry of gold has been studied in detail in a 'second-generation', non-haloaluminate, ionic liquid. In particular, the electrochemical behaviour of Na[AuCl4] has been investigated in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(tifluoromethyl)sulfonyl} imide, [C(4)mim][NTf2], over gold, platinum and glassy carbon working electrodes. The reduction of [AuCl4](-) initially forms [AuCl2](-) before deposition on the electrode as Au(0). To enable stripping of deposited gold or electrodissolution of bulk gold, the presence of chloride, trichloride or chlorine is required. Specifically trichloride and chlorine have been identified as the active species which preferentially form Au(I) and Au(III), respectively.

Voltammetric studies of PCl3 and POCl3 have not been reported in the literature to date, probably due to the instability of these molecules in conventional aprotic solvents giving unstable and irreproducible results. From a previous study [Amigues et al. Chem. Commun. 2005, 1-4], it was found that ionic liquids have the ability to offer a uniquely stable solution phase environment for the study of these phosphorus compounds. Consequently, the electrochemistry of PCl3 and POCl3 has been studied by cyclic voltammetry on a gold microelectrode in the ionic liquid [C(4)mpyrr][N(Tf)(2)] (1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide). For both compounds, reduction and oxidation waves were observed and a tentative assignment of the waves is given. For PCl3, the reduction was thought to proceed via the following mechanism: PCl3 + e(-) h reversible arrow PCl3-, PCl3- reversible arrow Cl- + (PCl2)-Cl-center dot, (and) Cl- + PCl3 h PCl4-. For POCl3, the suggested reduction mechanism was analogous to that of PCl3: POCl3 + e(-) reversible arrow POCl3-, POCl3- reversible arrow Cl- + (POCl2)-O-center dot, and Cl- + POCl3 h POCl4-. In both cases (PCl2)-Cl-center dot and (POCl2)-O-center dot are likely to engage in further reactions. Potential step microdisk chronoamperometry was carried out on the reductive waves of PCl3 and POCl3 to measure diffusion coefficients and number of electrons transferred. It was found that the diffusion of PCl3 was unusually slow (3.1 x 10(-12) m(2) s(-1)): approximately 1 order of magnitude less than that for POCl3 (2.2 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1)). For both PCl3 and POCl3, a
