Tensile and compressive deformation of a short-glass-fiber-reinforced liquid-crystalline polymer

Results of tensile and compression tests on a short-glass-fiber-reinforced thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer are presented. The effect of strain rate on the compression stress-strain characteristics has been investigated over a wide range of strain rates epsilon between 10(-4) and 350 s-1. The low-strain-rate tests were conducted using a screw-driven universal tensile tester, while the high-strain-rate tests were carried out using the split Hopkinson pressure bar technique. The compression modulus was shown to vary with log10 (epsilon) in a bilinear manner. The compression modulus is insensitive to strain rate in the low-strain-rate regime (epsilon = 10(-4) - 10(-2) s-1), but it increases more rapidly with epsilon at higher epsilon. The compression strength changes linearly with log10 (epsilon) over the entire strain-rate range. The fracture surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy.

Natureza jurídica das entidades gestoras do regime de previdência complementar para os servidores públicos federais

A Constituição Federal autoriza a União, os Estados, o Distrito Federal e os Municípios a limitarem o valor dos proventos de aposentadoria pagos a seus servidores, bem como das pensões pagas aos dependentes desses, ao limite máximo estabelecido para os benefícios pagos pelo regime geral de previdência social (RGPS). Condiciona essa providência, contudo, à instituição de regime de previdência complementar específico, instituído por intermédio de entidade fechada de previdência complementar, de natureza pública. Com fulcro na regra constitucional acima mencionada, a União instituiu regime de previdência complementar para os seus servidores por meio da Lei nº 12.618, de 30 de abril de 2012. Essa lei autoriza a criação de três entidades fechadas de previdência complementar (EFPC), estruturadas como fundações. O trabalho analisa a natureza jurídica das fundações recém-mencionadas, concluindo por sua incompatibilidade com a natureza pública exigida em foro constitucional.

The Impact of Regulation on Pricing Behavior in the Spanish Electricity Market

In this paper we measure the impact of regulatory measures which affected the Spanish electricity wholesale market in the period 2002-2005. Our approach is based on the fact that regulation changes firms' incentives and therefore their market behavior. In the absence of any regulation firms would choose profit- maximizing prices on their residual demands so that the observed gap between optimal and actual prices provides a measure of the effect of regulation. Our results indicate that regulation has decreased wholesale prices considerably, but became less effective at the end of the sample period which explains the change of regulatory regime introduced in 2006.

Markov Switching Risk Premium and the term structure of interest rates. Empirical evidence from US post-war interest rates

This paper considers the basic present value model of interest rates under rational expectations with two additional features. First, following McCallum (1994), the model assumes a policy reaction function where changes in the short-term interest rate are determined by the long-short spread. Second, the short-term interest rate and the risk premium processes are characterized by a Markov regime-switching model. Using US post-war interest rate data, this paper finds evidence that a two-regime switching model fits the data better than the basic model. The estimation results also show the presence of two alternative states displaying quite different features.
