The thermal energetics of rodents from cool, wet tropical highlands are poorly known. Metabolic rate, body temperature and thermal conductance were measured in the moss-forest rat, Rattus niobe (Rodentia), a small murid endemic to the highlands of New Guinea. These data were evaluated in the context of the variation observed in the genus Rattus and among tropical murids. In 7 adult R. niobe, basal metabolic rate (BMR) averaged 53.6±6.6mLO2h(-1), or 103% of the value predicted for a body mass of 42.3±5.8g. Compared to other species of Rattus, R. niobe combines a low body temperature (35.5±0.6°C) and a moderately low minimal wet thermal conductance cmin (5.88±0.7mLO2h(-1)°C(-1), 95% of predicted) with a small size, all of which lead to reduced energy expenditure in a constantly cool environment. The correlations of mean annual rainfall and temperature, altitude and body mass with BMR, body temperature and cmin were analyzed comparatively among tropical Muridae. Neither BMR, nor cmin or body temperature correlated with ambient temperature or altitude. Some of the factors which promote high BMR in higher latitude habitats, such as seasonal exposure to very low temperature and short reproductive season, are lacking in wet montane tropical forests. BMR increased with rainfall, confirming a pattern observed among other assemblages of mammals. This correlation was due to the low BMR of several desert adapted murids, while R. niobe and other species from wet habitats had a moderate BMR.

Several cases of Brunner's gland hyperplasia causing hemorrhage, obstruction, or intussusception have been published in the adult literature. Similar cases in the pediatric population are very rare and have only been described twice, always associated with chronic renal failure. We report the third and youngest case of gastric outlet obstruction because of Brunner's gland hyperplasia focusing on histopathologic condition and treatment based on a review of the literature.

Objective To evaluate the influence exercised by institutionalization on the autonomy and perception of quality of life among the institutionalized elderly. Method The study is quasi-experimental (interrupted time series) and longitudinal. The sample is composed for 104 elderly people who went into a three nursing home in Santander, Spain. To assess the quality of life and dependence two scales were used: the Barthel Index and Lawton Index. Results There was an important relationship between autonomy and independence and their deterioration due to their institutionalisation, such as the physical and social aspects. Conclusion It´s important to point out that the dependence of the elderly is a complex phenomenon, which admits many types of intervention, including the customary ones referring to more classic welfare actions which tend to supplant the absence of autonomy in everyday life by facilitating services and attention to make up for this need, without having to resort to institutionalization.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the socioeconomic and clinical factors that contribute to the functional independence of the oldest old of a community. METHOD Cross-sectional quantitative study whose sample consisted of 214 elderly people registered in Basic Health Units. Data were collected through structured interviews and application of the Functional Independence Measure. We used descriptive statistics, and for association of the variables we used the Student t-test, ANOVA and Tukey's test for multiple comparisons. RESULTS The significant variables that contributed to the functional independence were remaining economically active, practicing physical and leisure activities, having a social life, eating fruits, vegetables and meat. The orientation to conduct these practices reduces the demand for care and help needed in everyday activities. CONCLUSION Maintaining independence is primordial to delay disability and presents itself as an excellent field of work for nursing.

BACKGROUND: Spirometry reference values are important for the interpretation of spirometry results. Reference values should be updated regularly, derived from a population as similar to the population for which they are to be used and span across all ages. Such spirometry reference equations are currently lacking for central European populations. OBJECTIVE: To develop spirometry reference equations for central European populations between 8 and 90 years of age. MATERIALS: We used data collected between January 1993 and December 2010 from a central European population. The data was modelled using "Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale and Shape" (GAMLSS). RESULTS: The spirometry reference equations were derived from 118'891 individuals consisting of 60'624 (51%) females and 58'267 (49%) males. Altogether, there were 18'211 (15.3%) children under the age of 18 years. CONCLUSION: We developed spirometry reference equations for a central European population between 8 and 90 years of age that can be implemented in a wide range of clinical settings.

Objective: A 26-year-old man with a history of Crohn's disease, treated with azathioprine since 2 years, presented an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) primo-infection and exacerbation of digestive symptoms. Method: An ileo-colectomy was performed, which showed a fatal EBV lymphoproliferation disorder along with a haemophagocytic syndrome. EBV DNA load in the peripheral blood persisted to be high loaded during hospitalisation (479,000 copies per milliliter) despite triple antiviral treatment. Results: Autopsy revealed a systemic lymphoproliferation involving lymph nodes, gastrointestinal mucosa and solid viscera (heart, kidney, lungs, prostate, brain). This was compounded of a population of large polymorphic B cell, hypertrophic macrophages and T lymphocytes, associated to haemophagocytosis. These massive infiltrations mimicked macroscopically as ulcers in the intestinal mucosa and ranged from polymorphic with plasmocytic differentiation to monomorphic large cells. Autopsy results confirmed the absence of Crohn's disease reactivation. The EBV infection was observed in all organs within the large images of the B cell lymphoproliferations. Further postmortem investigations revealed a deficit of the azathioprine's metabolisation enzyme thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT). Conclusion: We report and discuss herein the observations of a complete autopsy case along with the postmortem identification of the EBV infection type and TPMT mutation in a patient treated by azathioprine for Crohn's disease. Autopsy findings and further investigations helped explain the complicate clinical evolution and the fatal issue of the patient.

Drosophila boraceia sp. nov. is described from a single male specimen collected at the Estação Biológica de Boracéia, Salesópolis, state of São Paulo, Brazil. At first inspection it looks like a species of Drosophila belonging to the fasciola subgroup of the repleta group, mainly because of the fasciola-like pattern of fused spots on the thorax. However, mostly due to the quite distinct structures of the male terminalia, it seems to be more similar to one ungrouped and also spot-thoraxed South American species, Drosophila atalaia Vilela & Sene, 1982. Illustrations of the terminalia are also provided.

This paper provides evidence that the combination of land-use restrictions and anincreasing demand for housing can create incentives to induce forest fires as a means tocircumvent regulation and increase the supply of land available for residential construction.I estimate the effect of the price of housing on the incidence of forest fires using Spanishdata by region for 1991-2005. The results suggest that higher house prices led to asignificant increase in the incidence of forest fires in a region. I also find that the increasedincidence of forest fires led to a subsequent reduction in forest area and an increase in urbanland area. This evidence supports the claims often found in the media that propertyspeculators trying to build in forest land may be behind the recent increases in the incidenceof forest fires in Mediterranean countries.

Fire represents an important disturbance to ant communities in areas of fire regime. Otherwise, little is known about the effects of fire on ant communities in areas of non-fire regimes, such as in the Amazonian region. We evaluated the long-term effect of fire on ant species richness in a rain forest (Bacaba Plateau) burned 15-years ago and compare our data with the data of primary unburned forest. A total of 85 ant species distributed in 21 genera and 14 tribes were collected; among them, 72 and 44 species were found on the litter and vegetation, respectively. The fire damaged forest studied supports an intermediate richness of ants when compared to a primary unburned rain forest in the same region. A comparative analysis of ant species richness showed that the Bacaba Plateau presented a different ant fauna when compared with the primary unburned forests, suggesting that fire can alter ant species composition. Although, our results cannot be conclusive on the effects of fire on ant community, they represent a pioneer data on human induced fire in tropical rain forests.

In the last 50 years, concern about the loss of lichen diversity associated with forest management and forest fragmentation has led to many studies designed to assess patterns and monitor trends of lichen biodiversity in forests worldwide. However there are surprisingly few studies focusing on the effect of natural disturbance for epiphytic lichens in forest ecosystems and, especially, on how these changes affect the relationships between epiphytic lichens and other organisms. The major goal of this thesis was to characterize and valuate the epiphytic lichens in the Baixo Tamega region (northern Portugal) and to assess its vulnerability to several drivers of change, particularly fire. The study area is located in Aboboreira and Castelo, a mountain area with 105 km2 and a top altitude of approximately 1000 m.a.s.l. In this region, fire is one of the worst natural catastrophes not only because of its high frequency and wide extension but also because of their enormous destructive effects. This thesis has included three case studies that proved the need to develop management and conservation actions for the area. In the first study we assessed the epiphytic lichen diversity in the oak woods of the Aboboreira and Castelo mountains. Results have revealed high diversity value and presence of a lichen community that has suffered general decline throughout Europe. The second study has addressed the impact of fire over epiphytic lichens and community recovering patterns. Results observed along the fire gradient showed that the most common and abundant lichen species establish themselves early in post-fire gradient while “old-growth” associated lichens tend to recover slowly along the same gradient. The third study intended to evaluate the potential use of selected lichen species or groups as biodiversity surrogates, in a scenario of fire-controlled ecological changes. Results showed that the use of epiphytic lichens as surrogates of bryophyte and vascular plant diversity should consider not only species richeness and composition, but also occurrence of disturbing factors, such fire. among the studied groups, lichen genera is the only group that can be used as surrogate of total epiphytic lichen diversity, independently of fire induced changes
